loren makes it clear from the moment you meet him that he's trying to be a better man. it is equally evident that such things are not easy for him. he spent the first fifteen months of his life drinking and whoring, and it was only when the remaining members of his family passed away did he realize that this way of life would leave him to die alone, just as they had.
naturally charming and suave, loren has his moments of flirtation, though they're less about getting her into bed and more out of genuine interest, or to compliment her. he tries to be good and noble, though there are times when he can seemingly slip into his former ways.
to those he has no romantic interest in, loren can be the kindest thing you've ever met. he is constantly trying to help and please those around him, with an occasional witty remark. he tries to keep those around him in high spirits, afraid that if they hit a low, he will as well.
when it's necessary, loren will display the intelligence he so often keeps pent up in his mind, full of thoughts and ideas, and serious opinions rather than jokes to elicit smiles. he often plays devil's advocate and does his best to see every side of a situation, even if he may not personally agree.

plots
i. loren develops feelings for a girl who he adamantly pursues, and eventually, wins over.
ii. loren is afraid of how strongly he feels for her and takes up drinking once again in private. a friend learns of this and convinces him that it's entirely stupid. he quits once more and starts an inter-group alcoholics anonymous.
iii. loren becomes a father and, during the pregnancy, finds himself taking on traditional nesting behaviors and playing father to members of the clan, regardless of their age or authority.
iv. loren tries to become the clan dad.
v. loren attempts to reconnect with his many former children and bring them around. this may or may not turn into a big happy family, or a total disaster.
