Let's start from there. They're really easy so it shouldn't be too difficult.

    In order for a litter to be completely correct, you need to add dilution. Without dilution in a litter where a parent is diluted, a litter will always be incorrect. The genotype for non-dilution is D. The genotype for dilution is represented by d. Like using recessive and dominant, dilution needs two 'd' genotypes (dd) to be seen.


    DD = homozygous non-dilute, can not be diluted. Ignore this outcome.
    Dd = heterozygous non-diluted, can't be diluted but can pass both diluted and non-diluted color
    dd = homozygous dilute, can be diluted and will pass only diluted colors.


    DILUTION RULES
    - If both parents are diluted (dd), the kittens will be only diluted.
    - Always assume a feline is Dd if it is not diluted. This means, every single litter should have dilute and non-dilute kittens unless the first rules applies.


    DILUTION COLORS
    - Black + dilution = Blue
    - Chocolate + dilution = Lilac
    - Cinnamon + dilution = Fawn
    - Red + dilution = Cream


    When figuring out dilution, you can use the dilution genotypes in a punnet square just like you would determining the colors. Use a different punnet square though. For example:

    d Dd dd

    Let's move onto tabbies and then i'll give you practice with everything you have learned so far before moving on, okay?

    Tabbies are one - if not - the easiest type of gene you'll find in feline genetics. Basically, whenever you see a tabby as a parent, you add a tabby to the list. For example!


    black x fawn tabby
    black, blue, cinnamon, fawn, brown tabby, blue tabby, cinnamon tabby, fawn tabby


    ^ basically, all the solids can appear - and their tabbies variants.


    Aa is the genotype for when a feline is a tabby.
    aa is the genotype for when a feline is a non-tabby or solid.


    There are three common tabby patterns.




    There are more tabbies patterns but they appear when wildcat genes are present. This I will teach you later as well.



    As I said, tabbies are extremely easy. You don't need to make squares or anything. Simply do the littler as you would black factor and dilution, then add the colors again but as tabbies.


    RULES
    - You can assume a tabby has the mackerel tabby pattern. However, this will be up to you. (STATE you are assuming a tabby is mackerel if you do want to give a tabby pattern). Do not assume a red or cream tabby has a tabby pattern though. << I'll teach you more about red/cream later on.
    - When a tabby pattern is stated, make sure you note the kittens may get the same pattern.
    - If there are two tabby patterns that have two different tabby patterns, note the kittens may have both tabby pattern.


    NEW NAME **
    Black tabbies are actually called BROWN tabbies now.


    Final Example:
    brown mackerel tabby x lilac ticked tabby
    black, blue, chocolate, lilac, brown tabby, blue tabby, chocolate tabby, lilac tabby


    - tabbies may have either the mackerel or ticked tabby pattern.

    Let's move onto red factor! This is just regarding red/cream tabby. I'll teach you torties/torbies after this and before you do some practice litters.

    Red is not actually a color gene like black, chocolate, and cinnamon. The red gene is actually a mutation that blocks the normal production of the black factor colors. This mutation causes black, chocolate, and cinnamon to appear red. And it causes blue, lilac, and fawn to appear cream. Basically, it is a cat that has lost the ability to produce black pigment.


    Red/cream is also sex-linked meaning, certain genders can not have certain colors.
    ^ This is important. You'll have to state which colors can appear in males and not females and visa verse or it will be wrong.


    I'll refer to the red and cream tabby gene as red factor.


    To determine which genders get which colors, you'll have to use punnet squares. Here's a sheet to help you along. Ignore the tortie parts, i'll teach you that in a little bit.

    Tortie female = Oo
    Black male = oY
    Black female = oo


    When a red or cream tabby (depends on gender), it will be represented by OY or OO.
    When a black factor is present as the parent (again depends on gender), it will be represented by oY or oo.


    Note: black on the "sheet" can refer to black, chocolate, cinnamon, and all their dilutions. < all those colors are considered in the black factor category.


    Here's an example:


    RED FACTOR RULES
    - Red and cream tabbies are considered SOLIDS. Therefore, unless you are given a specific tabby pattern or the other parent is a black factor tabby, there should be no tabby pattern written and/or no tabbies.
