SUMMER!!!
The best time of year; the most amazing, wonderful season. The endless skies were bluer than a blue jay's wing in the afternoon, then faded into stunning pinks, purples, and yellows in the evening, while the sunrises announced another beautiful day. There was hardly a cloud in the sky at all, and those that did pop up came along in thin whisps and looked like horse tails waving in the wind before they slowly began dissipating. The grass was so green, and here and there gorgeous flowers painted the feilds and hills like huge rainbows. Birds were singing their happy songs while the sun shined its brightest to give light to the wonderful world and the amazing clan.
It was one of those days where a child, like the sweet innocent Kalani, could venture outside and explore the wonders. She could play pirate by the lake and search for incredible treasures, all while being guided by the mystical purple butterfly. She could pretend to be a skilled hunter and search for monsterous grasshoppers or terrifying bullfrogs, or chase the scampering squirrels back to their lairs in the trees. She could imagine herself as a warrior, taking on the dangerous clans invading and threatening the territory and fending off terrible dragons and monsters. So many opportunities, so little hours in one day to finish her quests of fun and fantasy.
Today, however, she was not playing. Her parts of hero, hunter, and pirate had changed to the young damsel in distress. Her fluffy silver coat had not shed enough to keep the pup at a reasonable temperature. It was too heavy and the sweltering heat only made her more and more hot. Before long, Kalani was panting from the heat, even in the shade, suddenly vomited, and then simply collapsed. Overcome with heat exhaustion, the puppy fainted under a large tree quite far from the camp, not knowing that, without help, she could be in serious danger.

Kalani's Symptoms in
heavy panting, vomiting, losing consciousness, dehydrated, already slowly progressing to heat stroke which will lead to brain damage
So this is a sort of close issue with me and I wanted to bring this to light for first time pet owners and people too.
Summer is obviously one of the hottest times of the year, especially where I'm from where temperatures have reached the hundreds before. Last summer my dog, a mostly black German Pinscher mix, actually forced me and my family to stop in the middle of our walk in another person's yard because he was getting too hot. We gave him some water we (thankfully) had on us and carried him for about a half block before he walked the rest of the way home.
My dog's coat is not as thick as Kalani's, but the dark coat absorbed the heat causing him to over heat. This happens, not only to humans, but to dogs of all kinds. Furry, hairless, black, white; it does not matter. Heat exhaustion happens to any pet and to anyone too. And over heating can lead to serious problems. My mom knew someone who was taken to the hospital from heat stroke, which can happen tooif the person or dog suffering from heat exhaustion isnt treated properly. I've overheated before a couple of times and I try and stay out of the sun as much as possible now.
If you know that it's going to get hotter throughout the day then please watch your pets carefully for signs of exhaustion. Like my dog, it could be as simple as just wanting to plop down in some strangers yard for a few minutes. Hydration and shelter are all a dog needs to keep cool, most of the time. The same goes for humans too. Hydrate, air conditioning, shade helps.

Stay safe this summer my two-legged & four-legged friends!
