When a futuristic era came and went with the changing of the Earth, the tales of faraway lands promising riches beyond compare had not been forgotten. With as much technology that was held in the hands of civilization, all manner of groups were sent to scour the two least explored areas of the planet - the poles and the ocean. The groups searching the poles fled home empty-handed with dreams of luxury beyond reach. Many parties within the ocean turned up the same way, but a few stayed behind. When contact was lost with the remaining, more groups were sent into the ocean to retrieve them. They were never found and they were soon all deemed to be deceased. The years wore on without them, and civilizations rose and fell as the surface of Earth gradually changed. The planet appeared alien, and the majority of the human population died off. Those that survived had evolved into creatures who no longer appeared human.
The humans who had delved into the depths of the ocean had found the lost city of Atlantis. There was a strange aura about the city that kept them trapped, subduing their minds into believing they must stay. By some impossible means, an underwater city was built to inhabit them. The aura of Atlantis changed them in subtle ways unknown to them. Their numbers began to dwindle with the coming of more generations, to the point where only a mere few could be born before incest would become a great risk. With high hopes, the newest generation boarded a ship and left the city to travel to the surface, their only guide being a map of the old world and a primitive knowledge of what used to be.
In simplicity, man had come forth with incredible technology over the years. It was then that it was strongly believed that, if anything, they would find the lost cities now that they had accomplished some great feats. Groups of explorers were first sent to the poles and the ocean to search for lost cities that would promise them riches if found. However, all groups sent to the poles came up short, as well as others from the ocean. A stubborn few stayed behind to continue their search. When contact was lost with the remaining, search parties were sent out to find them. When they weren't found it was thought that they had died by some means and their ships had sunk to the bottom of the ocean. Civilizations rose and fell as tectonic plates moved and changed the Earth's appearance. It wasn't long until humans became a critically endangered species and society had fallen. Any remaining humans evolved and adapted in order to survive, leaving them as unrecognizable beasts. As for the humans who had disappeared, they had found Atlantis whose magical aura lured them in and changed them over the generations. Now, so few of these altered humans remain that only a few more generations can be produced before risk of incest and deformity. Thus, some 'humans' volunteer to travel to the surface to find more humans, without knowing that it had changed. The story begins with their arrival at the surface of the ocean.
