    Brooklyn Hayes: Age Eighteen
The door slams shut and all I can hear is the sobs that escape from my throat as I lean my back against the door. All I can think is that he's leaving me. He's leaving me behind and I may never seen him again. The thought tears my heart apart further and I move to the side of my bed.

I fall against the covers, allowing the soft material to hug my shaking body like a mother would hold her terrified child. My day had started with pure shock and fear, and now I feel rejection. What more could go wrong? This night was suppose to answer questions flowing in my mind, but now I still have them.

I took a deep breath and tried to regain control, pulling out my cell phone from my pocket. I slide my finger across the screen and look at the picture of me and my boyfriend. He is the one leaving, going off to the military. I know I have to tell him my news, I know he has a right to know, but right now I can't stop crying enough to do so.

I turn the phone off and set it down on my nightstand. I'll just try again in the morning.

    Brooklyn Hayes: Age Twenty-two
    Present day

I stand behind the counter of the only small corner cafe in town. My salmon red shirt is buttoned from the bottom up, leaving the top collar button unbuttoned. A white apron is tied around my slim waist, and black slacks complete my little outfit. The everyday wear of a waitress here.

I run a rag over the white counter tops, cleaning up anything dropped by the customers. Currently it's a slow time in the day and not many people come in, giving me some breathing time. It's the little moments of relaxation that I now hope to steal away.

I glance over at the small table nearby, spying a little boy there. He has short and straight, blonde hair and fair skin. Freckles decorate his delicate little nose and his green eyes are focused on the picture he colors. He's the perfect little man at the age of three and a half.

A sigh escapes my throat. He is my pride and joy, and I work the way I do to make sure I can provide for him, but there is one thing missing from his life that I fear may stay a missing piece: his father. I look towards the door of the cafe and let my thoughts take over, just this once.

Where is he now? Is he even still alive? Does he even think of me for a second anymore?

I shake my head to rid these thoughts from my head and return to my work. I have more important things to think about than the man who I couldnt convince to stay. I just hate that my little boy may have to settle on having someone else in the father role.

    Plot
Brooklyn Hayes is the young girl who caught your character's heart the moment he laid eyes on her. She is beautiful and charming, yet fun and outgoing. There is never a boring time with her, and they soon became close friends. As time passed with them growing closer, he decided to make her his girlfriend.

No other couple was better paired than these two. Mostly everyone liked to see them together, and what they saw was a perfectly happy couple. This is how things were as their high school years flew by; high school sweethearts that pictured a whole future with each other.

But things have a way of changing.

You character finds his calling to go into military, wanting to help his country and maybe become something big. However, Brooklyn doesnt want to hear anything about it. At first, she thought that it was just a thought that he had, just an idea, but the final night that she went over was when she found him packing and getting ready.

As they both tried to prove their point on whether he should or shouldn't go, everything ended up in a yelling match and tears. Brooklyn gave in and left his home, leaving him to his bags and packing. However, she never got to tell him the news that she had found out that morning; the whole reason she had gone over that night: she was pregnant, and it was his child.

The next morning he was gone.

Now, four years later, your character returns home for the first time since he left. There has been no connection between him and Brooklyn since that night, so neither knows where the other is. However, one day they meet up, and Brooklyn has to decide whether he should know about their son or not.

How will he react to the news? Will he accept the small boy or leave him to Brooklyn like he has been all these years? How will he feel when he finds out that some one else behind the scenes may be trying to step into Brooklyn's life in his place?

Michael was born to a younger couple, his life was pretty good. He had his younger brother, Oscar, to play with and the two got everything they wanted. One day there was a knock on the door, and he opened the door to find two men dressed in their Dress Blues asking for his mother.

They were because his father was Kill in Action. After the Funeral his mother packed them up and moved them to Elmswood, Tennessee where her family was. He was brooding but met his best friend, Brooklyn, there. Over time he asked her to be his girlfriend, and eventually she was his HighSchool sweetheart. He loved her with everything he was.

He talked with his mother, for years about joining the Military, and finally she said it was okay. So he brought it up around Brooklyn.... he thought she would have been okay with it. But she wasn't. She freaked out. She at first brushed it off like it was nothing, but then when she realized he was serious she freaked.

He went with it anyway, the last time he had seen her she had pretty much called it off... and so did he. She had left and he had broke down crying.... He was to leave in the morning, and he left her with the worst things he could have possibly done. He didn't want to leave her on such a sour note, but he had broke down crying that night the second he heard his front door slam shut. He wanted to back out... but it was too late.

He left. He fought over seas, for four years..... four long years. He thought about Brook for most them. He was in one of his little fantasy things when a grenade went off, the shrapnel of the shattered building took out his entire right side and chest, he lost feeling for the longest time on his right side, and even part of his chest.... but finally slowly, got feeling back with countless surgeries to get the metal out of him. The surgeons did their best but there was still a lot of shrapnel in his chest, some too close to his heart for surgery. He was disbanded, but soon found out that not only that but his brother had died three days prior due to a car crash.

[OOC: I like him! I really like him! Thank you so much! I'll start us off.

[IC: Standing behind the counter of the small corner diner, a young girl ran a rag gently over the marble top. Her light blonde hair was pulled back into a ponytail, showing off her brown eyes as they remained cast down at the rag. She was dressed in a white, button up shirt, slim black slacks, and a red apron that tied around her slim waist. This was the everyday uniform for the everyday diner waitresses.

She had finished serving her last customer, knowing she had a bit of free time now. It was a slow time in the day and she knew that she wouldn't have many people come in. Glancing over to the side, she caught sight of little Jaxon. Quietly he sat in the booth nearby, positioned by the window. His legs swung gently as he colored a picture, and with his light monde hair and his green eyes, he was a perfect little man at the age of three.

She sighed slightly, knowing he would soon grow bored. She wished she could leave him at home where he could play, but her mother was working as well, and she didn't have enough money coming in to pay for a babysitter. Besides, she needed to save for their own place so she could move out of her mother's house. However, seeing Jaxon, she often thought of Michael. Part of her wondered if he was alright, and part of her wondered if he was mad at her for that night all those years ago.

Shaking her head, she pushed those thoughts away, knowing she didn't have time to dwell on them for long. She had work to do.

[justify]The ex Soldier stood at Six foot One Inch, and a sturdy cane in his right hand. The young man was still learning to walk once more after the countless surgeries to get his nerves back into working order. He couldn't go back to the Military, that much he knew... so he was stuck, living with his mother and trying anywhere and everywhere that was hiring. He moved quietly through the streets, holding himself in perfect posture, as he moved fairly slow. He wore fitted jeans, an old red tshirt, and combat boots.

Michael really didn't know where to go. He tried the grocery store, but they never called back. He had been home for one week, and all of his friends said they hadn't seen Brooks at all. A loud car horn was heard and the male turned quickly to see why, but seemed to relax seeing no potential danger.

Michael Cain found a diner and moved in. He looked around as he wasn't sure if he was to seat himself or not. All the male knew was that to be polite he should wait. He leaned heavily onto his cane, allowing him to relieve some of the weight off his right leg. His arm could easily be seen with all the scarring, but the man really didn't care. His dog tags hung under his shirt, but the chain could still be seen.

His gray-blue eyes found the waitress and he called out to her turned form, "Are you still serving? Or are you closing?" He tried to not sound gruff, and tried to sound gentle as he asked. He really didn't want to spook her if she hadn't heard him come in.

    [OOC:

[IC: Brooklyn heard the door of the diner open and then a masculine voice. She glanced up to see a tall young man standing near the door. She noticed his cane then nodded quickly. "Yes we are still open. If you take a seat, I will be sure to serve you quickly."

Brook's eyes traced over the man, finding something similar about him. However, she couldn't lay a finger as to what was so familiar. She saw his scars, her mind racing as she trued to figure out what they may have been caused from. Jaxon seemed to have noticed too as he curiously looked at the man.

Brook turned behind her and quickly folded the rag, setting it off to the site. She picked up a pad of paper and took a pen from her apron pocket, ready to take his order. Turning back towards him, she waited to see where he would be seated, smiling warmly as she had come accustomed to do towards customers.

[justify] The Ex-Marine nodded and moved himself to a corner booth, and settied himself so he could watch the door and the outside. His gray-blue eyes watched the young woman. She seemed familiar, like he knew her, and was supposed to know her. His mind tried to figure her out. His eyes went to the small boy in another booth, but he didn't think much of it. His gaze moved to the menu as he tried to figure out what he wanted..... a burger most likely. It was between the Lunch and Dinner rushes and a burger did sound good.

He decided a Coke, a burger well-done with cheese and lettuce and tomatoes... that sounded good. He looked up too see her, but his eyes drifted outside, as he ended up just becoming lost in his own world. He didn't mean it, but his mind took him off to a different place. He thought about his recovery and how he was trying his best to get his motors skills up.

He had a tired look about him as he moved slightly to adjust the cane that was against his leg. His fingers went to the sugar packets, an old habit when he was out somewhere. He quietly pulled them over and dumped them out on the table before slowly starting to sort through them and put them neatly into the small container.

His mind was content on the simplicity of what he was doing.... his right hand moved a little slower than his left did, and it showed on his face his frustration at the difference in speed between his arms. Once he got the sugar packets neatly into the container he noticed the waitress was there. "Sorry, uh... could I have a Coca Cola, cheese burger well done, with extra cheese and lettuce and tomato?" He said watching her.

    [OOC:

[IC: Brook noticed that the young man seemed to be lost in his thoughts for a moment after he was seated. How he was seated was also a bit different. It seemed like from his view, he'd be able to see the whole diner, and his body seemed ready for anything. She couldn't quite understand it.

Stepping up to his booth, she noticed the way he was sorting through the packets. Something seemed familiar about it. Her mind flew to Michael as she thought of a few of the dates they had been on. Was it him who did it before? She pushed the thoughts away quickly when she heard the man speak.

"Yeah, sure," she said in a sweet tone, quickly writing down his order. She used shorthand's to make it faster, then looked at him once more. "Will that be all for you?" Her head tilted slightly to the left as she asked, and she also thought that Jaxon might be getting hungry. She figured shed get him a bowl of fruit or something.

[justify]"Uh, no, but thank you." Michael responded with a soft smile before going back into his own little world. He blankly watched her head off before his eyes drifted out the window once more, watching people pass by. His fingers pulled the tags from under his shirt and he pulled them off his head, setting them on the table as he just looked at them blankly. His gray-blue eyes watched the unmoving tags like they were poison for a second before he reached slightly with his right and pulled them in once more. He turned the one over as if studying it but his mind had taken him to another place once more.....

"What are you doing?" The words cut into him as he sat perched in the building. He was waiting for a clear shot, but he didn't answer over the walkie. "Cain, what building?" He heard one of the others ask over the walkie again, but again he didn't say anything. He got the clear shot and fired. There was a loud bang to his right and searing pain. He felt people moving around him and heard the gunshots....

Michael had moved from touching the dog tags to holding his head, only to be brought out of it by a car horn outside. He was unaware he had even made a noise during his flashback. He glanced around before quickly putting the tags over his head once more and tucking them under the shirt. He blankly ended up staring out the window but didn't say much else.

He tried to piece together why the waitress seemed so familiar to him. He hadn't looked at her name tag, so Michael hadn't figured it out. If she had said her name, he probably hadn't heard her, so that didn't help. He furrowed his brow as he tried to think why she seemed so familiar.

    [OOC:

[IC: Brooklyn turned around as he finished speaking, tearing off the paper to had to her coworker. His eyes scanned over the paper then he nodded, taking it to make the young man's order. Meanwhile, Brook went around the counter, grabbing a small bowl and filling it with some grapes. She would pay for everything at the end of her shift.

She walked over to the booth and set a hand gently on Jaxon's head, setting down the bowl next to his picture. "Are you hungry, buddy?" she asked, to which the boy looked up at her briefly, nodded, then resumed coloring. Brook looked at the picture and felt a prick in her heart. It was a coloring page of a soldier with a very scratchy spelling of daddy at the top.

Brook quickly blinked and stepped away from the booth, going back to the counter. As she worked on the young man's Coke, her mind traveled over all yh stones she had told her son. As far as his little mind knew, his daddy was a soldier who was fighting the bad guys over seas. He didn't know about any fights, that she didn't know where his dad was, or even if his dad was okay. However, Jaxon looked up to this, and held the fact that his dad was soldier very proudly.

She looked over at the young man's booth when she heard a strange noise, her eyes landing on him as he held his head. Concern made her eyebrows furrow, but he seemed to recover before she made herself ask if he was okay. Grabbing the drink, she made her way back to his table, setting it down gently.

"One Coke," she said as the glass set down on the table. She reached into her apron pocket and brought out a straw, setting it next to his glass. "Your food will be out shortly."

[justify]Michael had returned his gaze to the small boy in the other booth. He looked at the waitress as she set his coke down. Mother and Son... he concluded, as the boy probably wasn't the chef's and there was no others nearby at the moment which made him think the boy was hers. He watched her for a moment before moving stiffly and pulling from his pocket an old pocket watch, it was battered and no longer held time but he held it out to her. "Perhaps he would like to play with this?" He offered in a voice all too gruff for such a young age. He held it out in his right hand towards her motioning to the boy he had concluded as her son.

"He's cute... should be a Heartbreaker in highschool." He said with a half smile as he watched her. He set the old pocket watch he had always carried with him. It had been one of the few things that his father had actually handed him, and he had tried to give it to Brook countless times before he left but she had refused to take it. So it had remained home while he was away and Brooke was gone.

"I'don't have to take it back when I leave... but I'm sure he would find it cool to play with until then." He added. He always had a soft spot for kids.... and animals. He had always tried to be friendlying to animals and kids, and often was caught picking up strays that were in danger while he was in combat. He watched the young waitress, and this time he saw her name... the same as his ex.... but it couldn't be her. Had she found someone else if it was? He didn't say anything to her or even ask her if she was his Brooklyn.

He set the watch down on the table before turning his gaze back out the window. Once again reverting back into his head of issues as he let her either take the watch or leave it behind. His mind took him to when he first got the watch, it had been brand new and shiny silver. The back was engraved with his Intials, MC. The front had once had a beautiful engraving of a fox, his favorite animal, it since had been very worn down and not as prominent but the fox was still visible. The inside he couldn't remember if the top still held a simple picture of him and Brook or if in his anger he had taken it out, he doubted he had taken it out. But the face of the watch itself was simple with Roman numerals. The watch time was forever stopped at 10:45:15. He knew all this from memory, and he could picture it in great detail.

    [OOC:

[IC: Looking at the watch in the young man's hand, she glanced back at Jaxon. She smiled and nodded slightly, looking back at the man. "Thank you. He often gets bored when he has to sit in here for a while." She looked at the watch he had set down on the table, gently reaching for it.

It was when it was in her hands that she took a good look at it. It was battered and worn, and she wondered why someone would carry around something this old. Perhaps it has some kind of memory attached to it. If that was the case, then there was no way she could accept this watch. To take something that holds a memory was an awful thing to her, causing her to think back to the little things she had to hold all hr precious memories.

As she look at it, she flipped it over, just letting her gaze travel over it as she walked to the counter to get his order. Upon arriving at the counter, she stopped in her tracks, staring at the engraving there. Her heart seems to skip a beat. MC. No, there was no way. It had to a coinsidence that this man had the same initailas as her ex. Turning the watch over, she looked closer at the front.

There it was. The fox. Michael's favorite animal... She heard the bell ring and she jumped slightly, nearly dropping the watch. She hurried and grabbed the plate of food, looking back at the young man. Its not possible, is it? Could it be that they just have similar likes? Even so, her eyes betrayed her shock and confusion, just as they have always betrayed her feelings.

[justify]Michael had since zoned out once more, watching the outside world. He tried to not think of the watch he had just given away. But then again, it wasn't like he used it anymore anyway. He mainly just carried it around with him as a memory of what he had before.

The Marine ended up looking over as the bell rang for food to be done. He watched as she almost dropped the watch. He watched as she grabbed the food and ended up turning his gaze to the outside world once more. He watched people mosey along, and seem to not care about much in the world.

Michael winced and moved his stiffening right leg slightly and once again had to move the cane. Stupid cane.... if I could just move without it I would be much better off. He thought sourly to himself. He the stretched out his right arm. One of the side effects of the countless surgeries was soreness and stiffness. And his whole right side was stiff.

He was starting to think his mother was right about him not being ready to go out on his own. But he really was tired of being cooped up. Between the flight home, hospitals, and the house, he was starting to go stir crazy with being inside.

He turned his gaze back to the Waitress. Could it be her? Could it be my Brook? Did she find someone else? he thought as he watched her move towards him.

[IC: Brook drew Ina breath as she made her way over to the young man. She held onto the watch, her thoughts now plagued with the possibility that this man could be Michael. But how could that be? He was away fighting and she hasn't heard anything about him coming home! But then again, she also hadn't been able to keep any contact between them anyways.

Coming to his table, she gently, carefully, set his plate down in front of him. "Here you go, sir," she said once she was able to get it set down. As she looked at him, she bit her lip slightly as she debated with herself whether or not to ask the question that danced in her mind.

Biting her lip had always been a habit she had whenever she was deep in thought, or nervous. It was something she had picked up when she was younger and it often ratted her out about her emotions. She looked down at the watch, her thumb running over the initial carving. "Um...I'm sorry," she said as she brought her gaze up to his once more. "But...but what's your name?"

He was wondering if perhaps... just maybe she was Brooklyn Hayes. The girl he had fallen in love with. The one he had planned to marry one day.... yeah he had gone off to the Military and he probably should have spoken to her more about it, but that was his regret between them.

He heard her ask his name and he motioned for her to sit as he responded, "If your asking my name, ma'am, then we have a lot to catch up on." It was true. It meant that she was probably Brooklyn, his Brooklyn, and she had either felt something familiar about him or the watch had given him away. One of the two. Either way, the male motioned for her to take a seat. "Open the watch." He said watching her carefully for a reaction. She had bitten her lip before, a nervous habit of his ex, and he figured she would probably take the seat now that she knew his first name. He silently hoped he hadn't pulled the picture from the watch, and that it was indeed still him and her on the top part once she opened it.

So many things went through the Soldier's head. So many things about what she had been up, if she had found someone else, and who the little boy was. He was curious about her, but his eyes fell to the watch she held in his hand. He waited to see her reaction, to see if a flash of recognition would cross her features.... anything. He wanted, no needed, a chance to see that smile that he loved so much. Or maybe she would freak out at him. Maybe she would yell and scream at him for leaving, just like she had all that time ago.

He didn't want a fight. He didn't want anger to cross her features. He was looking for a flash of what he had seen before. If it was his ex she would know exactly who he was by the picture inside that watch. If it wasn't he would tell her anyway. Tell her he had thought she was someone else, and he would apologize and tell her his name.

    [OOC:

[IC: Her eyes took him in as he told her to sit, her heart racing with the fact that this might be him. The father of her child, the young man she had fallen for at a young age. She took a seat as he requested, flattening her apron as she did. Her mind races, her heart ached, and her fingers trembled as she held the watch.

Open it. Brook's brown gaze fell to the watch, and only then did she remember the inside. Michael had w picture of us inside the watch... She had no idea how she could've possibly forgotten that fact, but she had. Now it was quite possibly the one key she had to knowing the truth about this man before her.

Taking a slight breath, she gently opened up the watch, her eyes almost appearing expectant. And there it was. The old picture of the two of them together lay gently where it has no doubt been for years. Her hand flew to cover her mouth and her eyes moved away from the watch and back to him...To Michael.

Though he had changed greatly over the years, she could now see parts of the younger him. Now that her eyes were on his, she could see just who he was. She shook her head slightly in disbelief, shock registering on her features as the fact that he was here sunk in. He was here. He was back home. He had found her once again.

[justify]"Hi Brooklyn." Was all Michael said as he watched her disbelief cross her features. "I'm home." He added more quietly his grey blue eyes never left her as tried to figure out what she was thinking. He wanted to know just what she wasaid doing in this small diner. What if she took off before he could explain? He didn't know. He just watched her, not touching his food.

"I .... I shouldn't have said some of those things I had that night. I had a long time think everything over...." Michael started but stopped, unsure of how or even where to start. The Marine watched before saying, "Keep this time?" He was referring to the watch, as he watched her.

He wanted tone move to hug her, anything, but held himself in check. He did shift yet again in the stiff booth, but he didn't say another word as he waited for her to speak. He wanted something. Anything. At this point he didn't care if it ended in a fight... he just wanted some kind of reaction.

    [OOC:

[IC: Brook kept looking at him as he spoke. Her hand stayed over her mouth as she took in the sight of him. His hair, his skin, his build, his eyes. All of him. She shook her head slightly as he spoke of that night, but she could hardly get any words out. Her fingers clasped the watch tighter, bringing it closer to her.

"You're...You're here...You're actually here." When she was finally able to speak, her words were slightly muffled by her hand. She felt relief that he was safe, a burning in her eyes from tears, and worry about the scars she could see. She brought her hand away from her lips and quickly wiped her eyes.

She couldn't cry here because she was still on duty. That would only arouse worry among other customers, not to mention Jaxon. She looked at him, giving a disbelieving smile. "I can't believe you're here." Its been so long and, with little communication, she had no idea if he had been safe over the years.

[justify]"Yeah... I just got home a few days ago." It wasn't a lie. He had only just gotten to his mother's house a few days ago, granted he had been off duty and in several different hospitals for last few months, but he did only just get home. "I ... uh.. tried writing you.... but nothing ever came back. I guess you moved." He said honestly, hurt was in his voice but his expression remained somewhat emotionless.

"keep the watch this time." He repeated as he watched her pull it in closer to herself. He hadn't had it over seas with him, and he honestly didn't want it anymore. It was a reminder of what he had before.... and if it was anything relating to her he didn't want it.

Now, don't go thinking he doesn't still love her, because oh he does, and his eyes betrayed him as he looked at her. They showed the love they once held for her, but also the sorrow of it all crashing down around them. Because of the fight.... he didn't want the watch. Because he had tried to get her to take it, and she refused, he didn't want it. It was just a stupid watch now.

He watched as he could tell she was on the verge of tears. He moved his right hand and simply held it out, palm up, as his damaged arm laid on the table. It was simple but he was just trying to be friendly and comforting. he didn't say a word just had his palm out to her. He had seen her look at the scars along his arm and his simple gesture was permission for her to touch the scarred arm.

    [OOC:

[IC: Brook nodded as he told her to keep it, her hand holding it close to her. There were many times while they were dating that she would wear the watch. Whenever she was separate from him and she had the watch, he felt closer than he really was. Only now, in her eyes, it also showed that he had come back.

The letters, however, were surprising. It was true that they had moved once Jaxon was born, needing a new place with enough room. However all this time, she thought he was simply made at her. All this time, her fear of that night had bolted any communication from her part because she was afraid he wouldn't want to hear from her again. Now she could see she was wrong.

She looked down at his arm as his hand lay out, her eyes tracing over the scars that now graced his skin. Her small smile disappeared as her features replaced it with curiosity and worry. "You're hurt," she said softly, her voice cracking slightly.

Gently, driven by curiosity, her fingers touched his arm along the scars. Her touch remained feather light, almost afraid that the slightest motion may hurt him. "Is that why you're home?" she asked as she brought her eyes back to his. "Did they send you here because you're hurt?"

[justify]"Yeah." He nodded lightly watching as she lightly traced over the scars along his arm. The muscle was still sore, but he tried his best not to let that on to her. He watched her fingers before he added, "It's not as bad as it looks." He lied. Referring to the arm itself it wasn't that bad. But the rest of his right side and even his chest... it was a flat out lie.

Thinking of what happened to him, almost sent him off into his own little world, but he barely managed to hang onto reality as he looked at her. He was using her as his anchor in the real world. That he had made it home. He was safe. She was safe, and his mother was safe.

"Between this and what happened with Oscar... they sent me home." Michael said quietly, not meeting her gaze. He just ended up looking at his arm, for anot her few moments before he looked up and asked, "What have you been up to, Brook?" He looked at how she held the pocket watch close to her. He wished he could have convinced her to take her that night... but at the same time he was grateful he hadn't. It was the fact that he hadn't convinced her and he had it on him now that she was sitting and talking to him.

His mind buzzed with dozens of questions of what she was doing here, who the boy was, and where she was living now. He wanted to ask her a lot of things all at once, but instead he kept his arm still as she traced along the scars and he waited for the answer.
