Today was finally the day I would get to see my girlfriend. You would expect for us to have already seen each other in person and not over Skype- especially after two or so years of being together. It was never that easy if you were in a long-distance relationship. My girlfriend lived in the USA while I lived in Europe- pretty much half way across the globe. We had met over Tumblr (surprisingly) and our relationship had sprouted from there. I loved my girlfriend dearly, but it did upset me that I couldn't actually be there to cuddle her or kiss her like normal couples would be able to. All I was able to do was kiss the screen and tell her I'd be there soon. Most of the time they were empty promises.

But this year I was able to get lucky. I had saved up all the money I earned from work for a plane ticket to the US. It was days before her birthday and I figured this would be a nice surprise for her. Just thinking about it made me smile and all the butterflies in my stomach began to flutter. I would finally be able to hold her in my arms and shower her with all the endless love I had.

It was earlier in the afternoon. I hadn't changed out of the clothes I slept in and was still lounging in my room with the lights off. My laptop illuminated my face, making it the only light in my room. Still a bit out of it from not being completely alert, I scrolled down my dashboard absentmindedly not really processing the images or words that passed over my eyes. Thankfully it was the beginning of the weekend meaning no classes and no needing to get out and sit through lectures. I had an issue with going to sleep at a reasonable time making it difficult to keep my eyes open from time to time. I glanced up to the right corner of my screen to check the time. Since it was early afternoon here, it would be the evening in Europe. I bit the inside of my cheek and pulled the USB chord plugged into my laptop to fish my phone out of my sea of blankets.
With the device in hands, I clicked the side button to bring the screen to life. I frowned at both the lacking battery life and the lack of notifications on the home page. It had been a while since I'd heard from Logan. Yeah, she does have things to do but it still shook me when I went more than a few hours without at least getting a check up text. I had recently sent a string of messages varying from puns to "are you okay?" I wasn't suspecting her of anything, but I just worried that something had happened. I dropped my phone back onto my lap and stared at the computer screen with my eyes out of focus as I scrolled down my dash once again, with my lips tilted down into a set frown.

  • [fancypost bgcolor=;border:0px;width:330px;text-align:justify;line-height:13px;font-size:7pt]I was busy packing my clothes and my other belongings when I heard that familiar ding! coming from my phone that was resting in my back pocket. It was probably Carter. I was so caught up with my thought out birthday plans I forgot to message her back telling her I'm okay. It really has been awhile since I talked to her so I wasn't surprised if she sent me a message asking if I was alright or something along those lines. Taking a break from all my cramming of things into my suitcases, I walked over to my bed and flopped down onto the covers. I pulled the phone from out of my pocket and pressed the 'on' button, the device's screen soon lighting up.

I then began to read through the messages she had sent me. Most of them were puns, which was typical of her to do, but the most recent one was a little more serious than the rest. 'are you okay?' she had sent me. My fingers began to manoeuvre swiftly over each key as I typed back my response. 'don't worry, i'm fine (: . and no i didn't forget about you. how could i when your birthday is in a few days?'

I blinked lazily at the bright screen and eventually had to force myself to get up before I eventually fell back into a doze. Swinging my legs off the bed, I sleepily made my way to the light switch and flicked it on, closing my eyes before I did so. I opened them seconds later and blinked a few times to adjust them to the now much brighter room. I leaned my neck to the left and heard a satisfying pop and I made my way back to the bed. I need to put on clothes. I thought with a sigh, knowing that the light won't prevent me from sleeping. I slipped on a random black and gray based t-shirt and pulled some pants on, pacing around the small room as I did so. Previously, I had been living in a dorm (as I had the past year) but had decided that I couldn't stand the constant loud sounds and my roommate being a complete ditz. After months of begging, my parents gave in and let me start renting a small apartment near my university. It was small as hell, but the rent was cheap. I ran my hands over my face and literally slipped on the hardwood as my phone gave a familiar ding. Blinking away my initial surprise, I slid my socked feet to my bed and pulled the phone off it's chord. Turning on the screen, I sighed relief as I slid my finger across the glowing screen.
I smiled at the reassuring text and waited a moment before I replied. 'oh, good. sorry for being paranoid ^^''
    Send.
'oh hey, i almost forgot about it!' Read the second message. I wasn't even lying. It seems that the older I get, the harder it gets to look forward to these things. But who knows, maybe this one won't suck for once. Laying my phone back on my bed, I opened up my blinds and looked at my great view, of the parking lot. With my eyes now blinded with light, i continued to circle my room, getting my face presentable and my hair done in an acceptable manner getting ready for the day that might never start. But hey, if we end up skyping I can't look like a slob, I kept telling myself as I redid my eyeliner for the fifth time as words of encouragement.

  • [fancypost bgcolor=;border:0px;width:330px;text-align:justify;line-height:13px;font-size:7pt]I chuckled softly as my brown eyes scanned over the newly received message. Had she already forgotten her birthday was just around the corner? Once Carter saw what her gift was this year, she wouldn't be able to forget it. 'sorry i gotta cut things short, but right now i'm caught up in a few things so i'll have to chat with you later ):' I typed. I knew she'd be upset because I had to end our conversation way earlier than I normally would. I had to, though. I couldn't waste any time I had to get my stuff packed. plus my flight was in a few hours and I sure as hell didn't want to miss it. Finally, I ended the text with an 'i love you <3' before closing my phone. I got up from the bed and shuffled over to my bathroom to freshen up. I opened the door to the shower and turned the switch on to the mid-hot setting. I left the water to heat up a moment, soon beginning to strip out of my clothes. I stepped into the shower, letting the hot water run over my body.

I closed my eyes, my body relaxing under the heat of the water. I grabbed the soap from off the rack, lathering myself with the white suds. It was a good 15-20 minutes before I decided it was time to come out. I wrapped a towel around my water-covered torse and made my way back into my room to get dressed. I just decided to throw on something simple but comfortable. After all, I was going to be on a plane ride for 15+ hours. It wouldn't make sense for me to dress up all fancy. Just a marble grey t-shirt and shorts would suffice, of course followed by my signature snapback.

As soon I was finished prepping everything else, I made sure all my essentials were packed and ready to go. I had only had a few hours left until my flight was leaving. Here in Madrid, it was somewhat around 4:00, most likely later than that. In the US, I assumed it was late in the morning. I'd arrive at the American airport some time at night.

I was once again trying to redo the wings of my eyeliner as I got a ding. I was hesitant to get it, as I had a streak of black being made by my hand, but my the second notification I sat down the liner and picked my phone up from the bed. I initially frowned at what she had to say, curling a piece of hair around my finger. Then I looked at the rest and perked up slightly. Why should I be upset? It's later there, she probably has important things to do. Unlike me. I thought with a slight laugh at myself.
'alright. talk to you later, I love you more <3.' And with that, I locked my phone and laid it down. After actually finishing my eyeliner, I gathered my laptop and phone into my arms and carried it into the living room. I could hear the brief sound of cars passing down the bust streets. Laying the electronics onto the coffee table, I got the rubber band from my wrist and pulled my unruly hair into a ponytail before falling back onto the rather small couch.
It was the weekend, but that didn't mean I still didn't have to deal with classes. I groaned as I remembered the research project that was due soon. Balancing my elbow on my knee, I held my face with the palm of my hand and grabbed the computer with the other hoping I didn't drop it. I hated college and I hated work. But hey, how else would I get a job? Using both hands to open the laptop, I opened up the browser and got into Google Docs. "Great." I muttered under my breath. College was such a bore, as were most things. Everything I did, I wanted to do with Logan. Even sitting here just researching things, it would be better with her beside me.

  • [fancypost bgcolor=;border:0px;width:330px;text-align:justify;line-height:13px;font-size:7pt]Check! Check! Check! Everything was set and ready to be taken to the terminal. I grabbed the overloaded backpack that was resting at the foot of my bed and threw the straps around my shoulder. I took the rest of the luggage and brought it down stairs, loading everything into the trunk of my car. I then made sure I didn't leave anything behind such as my phone, laptop, charger, or anything of that such before turning off all the lights and locking every door. I exited the apartment building, returning to the parking lot where my car was waiting. I opened the door to the vehicle and got inside, taking my keys and plugging them into the ignition. As the car growled to life, I closed the door and proceeded to drive to the airport.
At the airport, I retrieved all my stuff from the car and brought it inside of the concourse. Of course, before I was allowed to board my plane I had to go through security check and all that mess. At least now I was sitting quite comfortably in a seat, waiting for the plane to depart from the port. I'd probably be asleep within the first few minutes of taking off. It was the easiest way to pass the time. I was also pretty tired. Resting my head against the ovaled window, I stared outside. I began to wonder what Carter was doing and how she was feeling. For as long as I known her, I knew she wasn't big on birthdays; especially her own. At least this year she had something to look forward to- she just didn't know it yet. Just the thought of finally being with her made me smile sheepishly. I probably looked like a dumbass to the other passengers, but I didn't mind.

Being a psychology major, this paper was different. It was based on one of the issues that my teacher wanted me to "tackle." Parity in mental health care, and it was grueling. I had spent hours the previous night just scrolling down websites before the boredom eventually blacked me out, and boy was I close to it again. All the words on my google docs page were just blurring into a black blob on a white background and I had to resist the urge to rub my eyes due to the layers of black coating them. I had to slam the computer shut as my eyes began to close on their own. Sighing, I shook my head and placed the electronic device on the empty spot on the couch next to me. I grazed my eyes over my phone half heatedly wanting to see it blinking with a reply, but I knew Logan was busy today. It was just an urge to continue to text her. It was strange, but I missed a person I've never even met.
I grazed my bottom teeth over the inside of my lip and pulled myself to a standing position to go make coffee, in the afternoon. I had late classes on weekdays, so I was used to being up at this time, but I was running on just a few hours of sleep at this point and it was difficult to just stand. As the coffee was making I paced around the kitchen, sliding in circles to pass the time.

  • [fancypost bgcolor=;border:0px;width:330px;text-align:justify;line-height:13px;font-size:7pt]It seemed like only a few minutes passed since I dozed off to sleep. The thing that woke me was the sound of the flight attendant's voice over the intercom stating that the plane has landed and it was time for everyone to get off. It did take me a few seconds to gather myself before standing up and following the rest of the passengers off of the plane. My brown orbs observed the foreign airport in awe. So this was America, huh? My parents would've loved to take a trip here. They always talked about it, even when I was a kid. Maybe one day I could bring them here. My attention then turned to the signs posted around the building, directing us where to go. I tracked the signs until I reached the conveyor belt where I then received my luggage. Now that I had everything, getting around town was my first objective. That was gonna be a bit of challenge due to my shitty English skills. I had only taught myself the main English vocabulary and such. So smart of me, right? Well, fortunately, the second most spoken language in this country is Spanish so I should be okay. I still wouldn't get my hopes up thinking every person I talked to would know how to speak it, though.

I soon left the airport, bags in hand. I decided to take a seat on a bench located outside of the port try to get into contact with Carter. It was night time so I didn't know whether she was still awake or not but hoped she was. Pulling out my phone, I texted Carter's number. 'hey, you still awake?' send.
