    OLIVIA WESTWOOD

Olivia's lips pulled into a frown. Ryan was right. She needed to hurry, or else she really would be late for class.

"Alright, yeah. Sorry." She ran a hand through tousled, coppery curls and exhaled.

The nervousness must really have been getting to her, though she would never admit it. She squared her shoulders and continued towards the school.

"I think I can find the office myself," she assured. She would feel guilty if he ended up late to class because he was trying to drag his stupefied older sister along. "This school is half the size of my old school. It won't take me long. You should probably just get to class."

[color=black] "Then I guess this is where we part ways. See ya, sis!" Ryan went on by himself. He didn't sound TOO happy, but not disappointed, that he was able to get to class by himself. He disappeared among a crowd of boys and girls his age range.

    OLIVIA WESTWOOD

Olivia's eyes, jungles in their own right, followed in the wake of her brother until he was completely immersed by the writhing crowd of students. It was only after he was completely effaced from her peripheral vision that she started on her way, hoping only that she could fly under the radar until at least first period.

Her prediction turned out to be spot on. She discovered the office without much hassle, and earned herself a schedule from the quiet lady behind the desk. If the office worker recognized her name at all, it went overlooked.

She left the office feeling a bit better. She had no gym at all this semester, a revelation that made her spirits fly as she strode along the sidelines of the hallway, scanning over where her first period would be in correlation to where she actually was.

As it turns out, she was just about to walk past her first period class when she looked up to find, with great astonishment at the simplicity of her endeavors, her designated room number. A relieved sigh whooshed past her lips as she ducked into the classroom.

Already, there were several students scattered throughout the room. Some sat, silently reading, while other chatted quietly among themselves. The teacher, a youngish looking lady with long, blonde hair, smiled at her from behind her cluttered desk.

"Don't tell me. You're Olivia Westwood?"

A few students glanced up. Olivia cringed internally, but forced herself to smile back. "Yes, uh, ma'am. That would be me." Southern mannerisms were one thing she had picked up from Florida that she had learned weren't used nearly as often in Maine. Whereas in Florida, teachers expected, and even enforced, that they were referred to as "ma'am" and "sir", she had thus far received only weird looks from those she had used it on in Leights.

If the teacher noticed, it didn't show. She pointed a long, neatly manicured finger towards a seat in the center of the room. "That seat right there is empty. I'm Ms. Hanks, and if you have any problem in here, you can come to me for help."

Olivia offered her a nod and a lopsided smile, but said nothing more as she retreated to her seat. Eccentric, though she may have been, Ms. Hanks seemed like a sweet enough lady.

    OLIVIA WESTWOOD

Of all the thirty-or-so desks in the room, Olivia had the good fortune of being directed to the one directly adjacent to a boy she recognized from her earlier group of angel-faced admirers. While the desks were spaced out at even intervals of around two feet throughout the entirety of the classroom, she felt quite certain as she took her seat that they couldn't have been any closer together. She became hyper-aware of her every breath and movement as she slid her bag under the desk and liberated her arms from the much-too-large trench coat.

When she was safely removed from the jacket, she hung it over the back of the chair and leaned back. The room had gotten more crowded since her arrival, and her presence hadn't gone overlooked a single time. Of course, she was the new kid, and the room was painfully small in comparison to the vast space of the hallways. It was only natural that she be noticed here, in a space as confined as the classroom.

Still, she couldn't help the way her skin heated up each time it was met by a new pair of curious eyes. And she couldn't help the way she tried, and failed, to keep herself from glancing occasionally at the chestnut-haired boy in the adjacent seat.

Again, she couldn't stop herself from wondering how somebody so attractive was stuck in a place like this. And why she was so stupidly curious about him in the first place. He wasn't that interesting. There was just... something there. Something she couldn't quite place her finger on, but that drew her curiosity like water from a well.

Surely she wasn't the only one who felt that way?

With each passing second, she wished more and more for the day to be over with. And the bell signifying the initiation of first period had yet to even sound.

This, she realized with a sudden pang of horror, would be the longest day of her life.

Zac placed his jacket and backpack to hang over the back of his seat, like a hook. He debated talking to his new neighbor and getting to know her. Human contact was something Zac approached with caution after The Incident. He thought of it this way: She and others of the living would be better off without him.

But it was alright to slip up once in a while.

Zac held out his hand for her to shake. A Texan way of greeting. "Howdy. Name's Zac Morgan. I think you heard of me." You could heard a faint drawl; Ancient, but still lingering.

    OLIVIA WESTWOOD

Olivia didn't know what she'd expected, but an actual greeting from her neighbor was certainly not it. There was the faintest trace of an accent in his voice- definitely southern, but somehow thicker than any Floridan's accent. She didn't delve too deep into it.

She offered Zac a half-hearted smile. Of the many people who had stolen glances at her, perhaps wondering if she would be the first to open up and spill her life story, he was the first of the morning to actually gather the guts to speak to her. With looks like his, a strong first impression was only expected.

Even so, something about how he knew she had already heard of him strung her nerves in a way that made her reply come out sounding short. So he really had been watching her with Ryan earlier that morning!

"Olivia," she mumbled. In spite of her irritation, she utilized the opportunity to get a better look at his face. He was just as attractive up close, if not more so. His milky white complexion exploited each and every strand of his coarse, chestnut brown hair. Her eyes narrowed involuntarily. "I guess you've heard of me, too?"

    OLIVIA WESTWOOD

Zac's statement wasn't that far-fetched. As far as Olivia knew, she hadn't done anything particularly newsworthy her entire life let alone since she had moved back to Leights. The only exploitable tidbit about her was that her mother was the mayor. Apparently, that was all it took for her to be considered interesting.

She felt the tension in her muscles begin to ease with the mention of her brother. Expressing a mirthless chuckle, she sunk back into her seat.

"That would be true." It was tempting to spill how the two of them had been separated for the past five years of their lives, and that she had only ever known Ryan as an elementary school-going kid. That it was a weird and uncomfortable experience to slip back into the role of a 'big sister.'

Then again, why give her life story away to this pompous Zac character? She didn't know a thing about him!

"We've not seen each other in a few years, so it's nice getting to see my little brother again, you know? He's an... alright kid." Each word was slowly spoken, as if the result of an immense amount of thought. In reality, she was simply being careful so as not to have them overflow into excessive information.

Before Zac had the chance to question her further, Olivia cast him a sidelong glance. "Don't you have a few siblings yourself? Those people standing with you outside the school this morning, I mean?"

None of them looked a thing alike. The female of the group had fiery ginger curls, while each of the three boys varied in appearance. She recalled one as having disheveled, charcoal black hair and the other as a mousier, though not at all unattractive, blonde boy. Then there was Zac. Brown-haired, blue eyed Zac.

She blinked as the images of each filtered like sand from her thoughts, and the shapes and colors of the present reanimated around her. "None of you look a thing alike..." Appearing dazed, she shook her head. They must have been adopted, or from different parentage, all four of them.

Zac gave her question a thought, "It's simple: We're adopted." Like Olivia, Zac wasn't going to give her the full details. He came from the Confederate South, Bryce had come from WWI; Each sibling came from a different point in time. Most were often shocked when he said the word 'adopted' like it was no big deal. That was his way: Truthfully lying.

"What brings you to Nowhere?" Zac fired another question, "You couldn't have had a choice."

    OLIVIA WESTWOOD

It was as Olivia had guessed. Adopted, all four of them. The chief of police and his wife must have either been loaded rich, or the most generous people in the Northern Hemisphere.

Part of her hoped that the questions would end there, and that they could leave the conversation at that. She didn't enjoy talking, and most certainly not about personal matters.

Only when he shot another question at her did she realize that there was another half of her that didn't mind. She was as curious about Zac as he seemed to be about her, and the way she felt like the centerpiece of his attention was sort of... Well, flattering.

It was infuriating, even more so when she felt obligated to answer him.

"Actually, I did," she admitted. Her gaze fell to the rounded ends of her bitten fingernails. So that she wouldn't feel tempted to risk another long look at his face, she pretended to study them as she explained. "My dad got this opportunity to teach at a private school over in England. London, actually. I couldn't ask him to stay here, and I don't really see myself living in Europe, so..."

How the rest plays out, most of the town already knew.

Finally, she dared a single, fleeting glance in Zac's direction. She just had to see his expression, had to know what he was thinking.

Then, without further ado, the bell clattered off its most ear-piercing cacophony.

The ringing bell got Zac's attention quick. He turned in his seat. It was as if he hadn't been even looking at Olivia in the first place. So far, she had him interested. Though she, in all likeliness, didn't trust or even like him. Understandable. He opened his textbook quickly.

    OLIVIA WESTWOOD

History, as it turns out, went by at a fairly quick pace. She was grateful when she didn't have to give any introductory speech at the front of the class, and even more so when it turned out that the entire period would be spent copying vocabulary from the glossary of the textbook.

She scribbled down word after word, but her thoughts were on anything but her schoolwork.

Why had she given so much about herself away? To a boy who she had never met, no less! Sure, Leights had been lonely for the week she had thus far been there, but she had gone longer without a person to talk to. And it wasn't like she hadn't had Ryan around most of that time.

She spent most of the class deliberately avoiding any and all eye contact with her neighbor. Eye contact meant conversation, and conversation meant looking like an idiot in front of this somehow fascinating boy.

When the bell rang and Olivia could finally drop her pen, she realized that her hand was throbbing from her nonstop writing. She had filled two entire pages from front to back, both with information on Gothicism throughout history. From the Romanesque architecture of the 12th century, all the way to the works of Edgar Allen Poe and Horace Walpole.

She clenched and unclenched her fingers until the throbbing subsided and she could shove her binder down into her bag. She fished around until she felt a paper, her discarded schedule, stuffed between two composition notebooks.

She unfolded the paper onto her desk and scanned it over until discovering that her second period class... was trigonometry.

[color=black] A redheaded girl, with hair done in a braid, sat in the classroom front row. This was Abigail Evans; A big figure in student circles. She was currently pulling out her notes for the class when she heard the door opening. The attention on it made her feel...Uncomfortable.

    OLIVIA WESTWOOD

Olivia introduced herself to her teacher while avoiding the prying eyes of students with practiced ease. She was directed to a seat in the second row, where she took a cautious seat behind a girl with red hair. If she saw another Morgan kid in there, she would avoid them at all costs. Even more so if any of them attempted to talk her up like Zac had.

Why she had developed this sudden and irrational dislike for the kids of the Morgan family, she couldn't quite say. It wasn't envy over their striking appearances. In Florida, everybody was either attractive or elderly, so she was accustomed to pretty faces. Maybe it was just Zac, and the pompous undertone of his overall personality. She pulled a binder out of her bag and set it on the desktop in front of her.

Yes, that must have been it. Something about Zac had simply irked her without reason or warning.
