• Elysium. A name that invokes wondrous beauty. Or with such a name -it should. However, the reality is just the opposite. This world is tainted, corrupted, and dirty. All adjectives you would not associate with a place called 'Elysium'. Still, that's just the way this world is. The world, consisting of a massive city. Long ago, technology boomed, and with it -expansion, and now every inch of everywhere is covered with concrete, asphalt, steel, fiberglass, or anything such like that, with towers reaching the darkened smog-like clouds high above. However, with such an expansive place, came maintenance. Or, rather, it didn't come. Quickly, Elysium began to stink, and rot, and decay. Leaving tight alleys riddled with garbage and rats, and even worse -its occupants, dickwads that would so much as rob you as look at you.

Yup, for a place called 'Elysium', it sorta sucks. Still, it's not all bad. Even though times are hard, and complicated, most get by somehow. Though, not easily. With the changes in technology, came a revolutionary discovery: Ether. This substance, or whatever it was - quickly became the primary source of power and sustainability, quickly surpassing what electricity used to be. Ether, being this powerful source of.. well, power, permeated humans, like radiation. People started to develop powers from Ether, and with the power of Ether, were able to do quite extraordinary things. However, with Ether, and technology, came a side-effect. Humans, though they became stronger with powers brought on by Ether, grew weaker in their own bodies. Vital organs would collapse, and sickness was far easier to get, and far deadlier. But technology had answers for that. Now humans are more machine than man, with all sorts of tech-based implants replacing even entire organs and systems within human bodies. These 'cyborgs' are the norm, with basically everyone having some sort of implant-based tech within their body, powered by Ether.

In fact, a new craze rose, something called 'Channeling'. Where 'Channelers' get in a ring all gladiator-style and duke it out, for spectacle, audience ratings, and for sweet hard-earned cash. Oh, Channelers is the name for people who fight using their Ether-powered powers. Channelers often get tech-implants to supplement and increase their powers, but that tech isn't cheap.

One more thing, with all the over-use of Ether, naturally pollution would arise, like in any scenario. This pollution came in the form of a toxic substance, naturally exuded from Ether. Ether that has become tainted, and vile. This pollution is called Seithr. Unfortunately, the world of Elysium is heavily polluted with Seithr. And though it comes from Ether, Ether is so ingrained into every-single-thing in every day life, that Seithr has become a necessary evil, though Seithr is generally poisonous to the common population. Even with most upgrades, Seithr eventually claims most lives.

    ....

A blond-haired girl entered the Channeling Ring, her trusty rifle hanging off her shoulder. She narrowed her eyes at her opponent. If she won this fight, she'd make a killing, tonight's ballot was especially high. Like usual, the crowd in the various rooms, seats, stands, and cubbies around roared. They stood wherever they could to get a glimpse of the action. Channeling was a beloved sport, even if it was quite dangerous and not exactly super-legal.

"Heh, missy, I'mma crush you, how's tha sound, darlin'?" The big Channeler in front of her gloated, stomping towards her, outstretching his hands. He was bulky and his feet were heavy. Clearly he had a lot of parts and upgrades within him. His strength, if she were to guess was insane. If he got a hold of her... he could probably snap her like a twig, or at least crush some of her more vital components.

Glaring at him, she responded, "Not today!" and flipped over him, with ease, her long blonde hair twinkling in the various lights that were set up to illuminate the otherwise dark ring. She spun around quickly, as he had to re-orientate to catch up with her. She held up her gun, aiming through the sights at him. "Flame Bullet!" she called, and pulled the trigger. From the barrel shot bullets that ignited on the man as they hit him. He immediately cried out in pain as fire engulfed him. He swatted at it, with his big hulking hands.

He grunted and growled in frustration, as red flames danced on him. His hands turned to fists and he narrowed his sight on her, even with the flames still licking at his skin. He raised his hands up, and shouted, "Seismic Pound!" Just before slamming his fists down on the ground, sending out a shockwave, that shook the arena, and tossed even some audience members around like rag dolls.

The girl let out a yeep, and stumbled. She was shocked by his sudden speed, as he barreled his shoulder right into her. The hulking man normally would be enough to crush the smaller person with just his weight alone, but her body was built sturdier than that, so instead she was just knocked aside, and flung to the ground hard.

Hitting it, she felt the wind knocked from her. With a scream, the man lifted her by her hair. In pain, hands going to her head, as she was lifted off the ground, rifle dangling from her shoulder. She looked him square in the eye.

"Heh, seems pretty lady isn't quite so good at fighting after all," He taunted, before lifting his other hand and hitting her in her stomach.

As she was punched, the girl let out a shocked cough. She couldn't lose this! Suddenly, a heat built up within her, and her eyes opened, glowing a bright red, with symbols etching into them. Her hands began to glow, and an attack name came to her. Whipping up her rifle, she called it out. "Kaleido-Ray!" And with that a powerful multi-coloured beam of hot power fired from her gun, it bore into the man, sending him flying backwards from the blast.

A man looked down at his monitor. "Hey, what the?" He called someone over, alerting the ref to the issue.

Soon enough the ref rushed into the fight, stopping it. "Hey, girl, what's the big deal? Your tech is illegal! You can't bring that into this Channeling Ring!" He yelled at her angrily.

"Illegal?" she retorted in disbelief. "As if this entire thing was legal itself!"

"Oh we're sanctioned enough! We don't recognize your tech, which means its either banned, or not yet available, which makes it illegal for use! You're disqualified!" A moment later, a few men, along with the ref of this particular Channeling Ring threw the girl out into the alley out back, slamming the door behind her.

She pounded her fist onto the ground, glaring at the black asphalt, shadows cast all around her, as it was late, only small lights lit up the area. No pay. Again. What 'illegal tech' were they talking about? She didn't know what their scanners picked up, but she had nothing illegal. Or at least to her knowledge.

A second later the door opened up, and the ref was standing there. He was frowning. "You were disqualified, so you didn't win anything, and your pot was kept. But, here, for the effort you put in or something. Get yourself fed tonight. I don't want some pathetic loser dying on me from starvation." He threw some change her way, that clanged on the ground, and he closed the door once more.

She stared at the loose change rolling around her, and settling around her. The blonde girl let out a sigh.

  • [glow=white,2,300]L Y A H[/glow]

Lyah approached the Channelers ring, planning to just observe for today. Her weapon of choice was still in the workshops receiving upgrades. She never fought without the best of the best and all of her secondary weapons weren't up to scratch to execute her plan. The raven-haired girl had only fought in a few fights with fellow channeler's, all of them with hefty prizes. A few fights was all she needed to get by if she picked people with good money to win and a chance over 70% of winning.

She got there just in time to hear a girl sigh, with a few coins spread around her. The girl looked tough, but it seemed like she had been beaten. Which was surprising to Lyah, as she gave the girls weapon a brief scan with her eyes.

''Who were you fighting?'' Lyah asked crouching down to talk to the girl at eye level. Whoever beat that weapon would be someone she needed to keep her eye on.

  • "Sir! On the scanners! -Aether!" A voice shouted across the room, from someone sitting at a massive computer console, he turned his chair and looked back at the leader.

The man he was speaking specifically to, stood in the center of the room. He had spiky black hair, with three horns sticking out like a mo-hawk, his eyes had an eerie translucent pink-red glow, with two horizontal slits for pupils. His clothing choice was mostly black and red, with a sinister looking cloak. He had a few medal-pins on his uniform, indicating rank. He responded snidely, "Yes, I know. I felt it." He glanced down, and breathed in, shuddering. "Aeetherrr..." he breathed out. Closing his eyes and composing himself, he stated, "Call in the 'Sins'."

"The... what? 'Sins'?" Asked someone, in a confused state. "I know who the '7 Deadly Sins', are, but not the 'Sins'."

"Yes! The 7 Deadly Sins! That's who I meant!" Responded the man in charge, clenching his fist and his teeth. "That's what I meant by shortening the name to just 'Sins'!"

"Oh! Right! Well. I mean, they're called the 7 Deadly Sins, so... I duno, if you had just simply called them by their actual name I woulda known what you meant..." said his compatriot. Who had bright orange hair, as spiky as his commanding officer. He too, had a redish set of eyes, with three vertical slits for pupils. He had some medals as well, but his uniform looked far less special. "I mean, I didn't know anyone that was specifically named 'Sins'... so that's why I got confused."

"Grr! Just bring them in!" The commander shouted angrily.

"Oh! Yessir!" The orange-haired man responded.

A few of the other officers around the room just pretended to ignore what had happened, feeling flustered.

The commander officer with the unusual eyes, and horns groaned, and rubbed his temples.

Elypsis was in the process of picking up the loose change around her, that the ref had been so gracious to bestow her, even though she had technically been 'disqualified', when she heard a voice. Truthfully, she had no idea what their scanners were picking up, and what the ref had stated. She had 'illegal tech'. Something banned, or not available on the market. Only Teri ever did anything to her as her personal Dochanic. Which was just a combined term for 'doctor' and 'mechanic'. A new profession that mashed the two together, considering so many people nowadays are made of part machines.

The blonde girl herself had about 70% of her body converted to tech, but some people went as far as 90%, or more. Channelers tended to have more mechanical-based bodies as it made fighting each other much easier. You didn't want to have no Skin-Mesh armor, under your skin, because if someone with any sort of tech that caused damage to a person were to hit you... Well you could have your entire skin fried off, or worse, and would need even more medical attention. Others that tended to have a lot of mechanical stuff inside of them, were older-folks, whose bodies were breaking down from excessive Seithr intake, and whose bodies no longer could fight it off on their own. Channelers suffered from this problem, like everyone else, but not as extreme usually, for most of their bodies were tech already, and with recent developments in Cybernetics and anti-Seithr technology, the problem seemed to be steadily decreasing, though it was still there.

Still, this type of technology, or rather, any type required extensive testing. You couldn't just shove new things into a human body and expect it to gel. Or, well, you could, but the issues could be catastrophic. Elypsis tended to love being a Channeler, and even though optimal tech and maintenance was expensive, she still strove to have the most up-to-date parts. Which required a lot of dodgy means about required cash. Teri often gave her upgrades as sort of a guinea pig, but he had never just outright stuffed banned or experimental tech inside of her. Though, she could put nothing passed him. She would definitely have to have a word with him soon. She couldn't be running around with illegal tech. Any scanner could suddenly pick it up and she could be arrested.

For as crazy as the world had gotten, with Cyborgs, Channelers, and weird powers from Ether, human-tech was severely and harshly regulated. Things with which weren't approved were illegal, and would definitely land one in jail, and even worse. They would usually forcibly remove it from you. Without insurance... or back ups... well, that could severely harm a person. For some reason, the system didn't care, if you didn't have any backups to help, they'd mercilessly remove anything illegal regardless of the ramifications it could have on your body. This always seemed odd to Elypsis, but it was just how it was.

Even so, there was a black market -cause of course there was- for illegal parts. Experimental stuff that always offered all sorts of things. From power to miracle cures for Seithr-plague. You could find all sorts of strange stuff in the depths of the city of Elysium. People who took those parts were crazy in Elypsis's eyes, but hey, whatever really. Still, Teri didn't usually dabble in that sort of thing. Now she was worried, and needed to speak with him soon.

It was time to answer the girl that had showed up in front of her. Gathering up her meager earnings, which would barely feed her with the worst of the worst out there that evening, she looked at the person before her. "Oh, uh, I didn't really catch his name. Some big dude, whose tech bulged out of him, and who had some unique seismic powers..." She looked off to the side, and added 'whom I actually beat', in her head, but from this girl's perspective. It definitely looked like she lost. Which was better than explaining she had some illegal tech.

  • "Alright, I'm done, does that feel better little missy?"

The short white-haired girl curled and uncurled her black, robotic fingers. "Mm, it's a lot smoother now, thank you."

"Anything for one of my favourites Miss Petrichor. I fixed up the elbow and shoulder joints while I was at it, so you shouldn't have to adjust them for another couple of weeks yet." The old silver-haired man grinned at her, wiping grease from his hands onto his already dirtied apron.

"Thanks Mr Hardwood! I've already transferred the money to your account, so I'll see you next month!" She jumped down from the chair, giving him a genuine smile before giving him a small wave and exiting his workshop. Mr Hardwood shouted a quick goodbye before he set himself to putting his tools away.

Ren Synkinisi Petrichor, well-known 15-year-old Channeler. Short white hair that stops above her shoulders, and steel-coloured eyes that most people don't realise are robotic until closer inspection. Her arms are not made of flesh and bone, but rather black steel and gears. A tight white sleeveless dress hugs her figure and ends before mid-thigh, and black combat boots that reach mid-thigh, but in no way constrict her movement.

Despite the fact that she was walking down the street alone without any visible weapons, she was in no way unarmed, and so not worried the tiniest bit about anybody who would want to attack her. So Ren wasn't the least bit scared when she stopped by an alleyway to see two girls, one of which seemed to have been kicked out of the Channeling Ring.

Ren strolled over to the two and tilted her head to the side cutely, "You look like you just got kicked out."

  •

Elypsis blinked as someone else came up. Another girl, younger than the two already there, by the looks of her. Wow, this alley was popular or something. She opted to glance around. It was dark, grimy, and filled with trash strewn around. It smelled about as good as it looked. She wondered why anyone would wander down this way to happen upon her, but eh, it seemed it happened coincidentally.

With a pink tinge upon her cheek, she spoke up, shoving the coins into some pockets. "Oh, uh, I just lost is all. No big deal," she said, with a shrug. Though, if the scanners hadn't picked up anything anomalous, she would technically have won. Then if they didn't know what she meant, she elaborated. Even though they looked like they knew what she meant. She nudged towards the building next to her, with the single shady door in the wall, where she was thrown from. "I mean from there, the Channeling Ring."

  • Ren nodded, "I guessed as much." But then the white-haired girl raised her index finger to her chin, "But you don't really seem the type to lose. 70% tech, as well as a high caliber weapon by your side, did you really lose?"

The steel-eyed girl moved her tech arms to behind her back, her metallic hands holding each other as she leaned towards the blonde in question, the sound of robotic joints moving smoothly sounding from her arms with every movement.

  •

Elypsis was caught by surprise. "Oh, you scanned me," she murmured, noticing the robotic eyes of the girl. Her own eyes were still normal (a light yellow color actually, for as normal as that color would be considered), it was common for Channelers to have eye implants to help scan opponent's. But it wasn't that common.

She wondered how much of this girl was human anymore, if even her eyes were robotical: 20%? 10%? 5%? It was hard to tell accurately, but easier to tell by intuition. Elypsis's intuition was telling her 'not a whole lot'. Frowning, and wiping herself down, preparing to leave, she responded. "Not really sure why it matters, but yes, I lost." Her voice conveyed her frustration. Could this person even tell emotion anymore?

  • Ren nodded, but she was still a bit skeptical. The white-haired girl offered her robotic hand to the blonde, a small smile on her lips, "Sorry for prying, and for scanning you, it's just become second nature to me and I can't really help it. The name's Ren."

  •

Elypsis with a raised eyebrow, warily reached out, and shook the girl's hand. A second later, the blonde reached down and clasped her rifle, before flinging the strap over her shoulder, to hold it comfortably. The girl's scanners didn't seem to pick up anything anomalous, though they may just not be as up-to-date as the ones in the Channeling Ring. "I'm Elypsis, nice to meet you, I guess."

  • Ren giggled, "You guess?" She took back her black steel arm, placing it behind her back along with her other arm. Being the curious young girl that she was, Ren fully activated her scanners. The white-haired girl nodded in realisation as her all-seeing eyes landed on her sniper, So this is why she was kicked out.

"Since I just got my arms fixed I was thinking of going in the ring tonight, I'm a bit low on cash at the moment," Ren smiled slyly as she looked at the change the blonde had picked up, "And it looks like you are too. So how about it? While I'm sure you would have won, I know that they won't accuse me of illegal weapons like they did you, so winning should be no problem, and we'll both be able to eat something decent tonight."

Elypsis was always ready to accept a kindness, as she just did a moment ago with the ref, but she was also not the most trusting of people. Most people in Elysium did not operate on total kindness. Half the time they wanted something in return. Teri was about the nicest person she knew, but she also knew he was only nice because he got paid. Well, he also seemed to particularly like Elypsis, though she swore he batted for his own team.

Despite not having much money, she did have enough to get something. Even if it would've been junk to eat, but still enough. Frowning, she thought about it. Something 'decent'? That sounded great, whetting her appetite. "Hmm, I'm not sure. Their scanners seem to be pretty unforgiving and top-notch. But, something 'decent' sounds good!" She smiled. Then frowned. "Duno if they'll let me in again, though..."

  • "Don't worry, I'll deal with that. Besides, if you're only watching they can't kick you out," Ren waved it off, walking through the door that Elypsis had previously been kicked out through. Once she had made her way through the crowds, Ren stopped once she reached the announcer. The dark-haired man grinned at her and nodded, letting her know that she was free to get in the ring once the next battle was over.

Elypsis wasn't entirely convinced, but decided to go along with it. She was just that hungry. The girl lived on her own, in this rundown apartment, and could barely afford most meals, leaving her to eat some of those worst slop society had to offer. So she followed this 'Ren' chick, and walked towards the crowd, right by the ref.

"Woah, hey. What are you doing back in here?" The ref asked, frowning, and stepping in front of her. He was a slightly taller than an average height for a guy. His hair was nice, black, and cut in a cool style. He had glowing redish eyes, that she assumed could scan, but he hadn't scanned her himself in the match, so perhaps not. His teeth gleamed silver, and he had orange stripes tatted on him in various places. His ref costume was slightly unique, in the fact that it glowed green and red in a few spots.

    "Just spectating, I swear!"
    Elypsis answered.

He narrowed his eyes, and glanced at Ren. "Hmm. I guess that's fine..." he grumbled, clearly unhappy about letting her back in. "YOU better do nothing though, got it? We'll be shut down if you use any of that illegal tech in here."

"Yeah, yeah, I got it, okay? Sheesh," Elypsis responded, holding up her hands, taking a spot in the crowd.

  • "Ladies and gentlemen, we have a very pleasant surprise this evening! Because tonight, in the ring, she's small but feisty; Dark-Armed Syn!"

Ren sent a mock salute Elypsis' way, before she entered the ring, moving to her side of the battleground. On the other side was the big guy that Elypsis had been fighting before she had been kicked out.

"Ya not as strong as they make you out to be darlin'."

The short girl grinned at him, "How about you wait until the fight actually starts to skip to conclusions on your opponent."

As soon as the bell rang, the big guy charged, but changed course to another corner of the ring mid-way. Ren held out her palm, the black steel sliding back to reveal a small ball the side of a marble, consisting of black steel and tiny gears.

The 'Dark-Armed Syn rolled the ball to the big Channeler's destination, and just as he pummelled his fist into the ground, he made contact with the small ball. But instead of crushing the ball, along with the ground, he was sent flying backwards, electricity sparking around his body.

The muscled Channeler groaned in pain as he rose back to his feet. His eyes widened as he looked at Ren, "But, I saw ya over there!"

Ren smirked, moving her palm to face the small ball that was still unharmed on the ground. Like a magnet, it was pulled towards her hand, and sucked back into her palm. As Ren walked towards him, he made no move to attack again, he only glared at where she had been before, as if she was still there.

The white-haired girl placed her steel hand an inch away from his chest, electricity sparking in her palm. The sparks grew until they lurched towards the big Channeler, knocking him out of the ring.

"And victory once more goes to Dark-Armed Syn! Come and get your reward sweetheart!"

Ren placed her hand on the railing of the ring before throwing her legs over the side. Walking up to the announcer, she sent him a big grin as he tapped a card she held in her hand with his own. Jogging back to Elypsis' side she held up the card and giggled, "Let's go and get a bite to eat!"

  •

Elypsis had noticed quickly the girl was using some illusions to trick her opponent out. It was a novel tactic to be sure, but it seemed that big dude had had no idea. The blonde wondered how good the illusions would be if someone understood how they worked. Still, it was impressive, and Elypsis herself couldn't help but be affected by it. She'd have to keep an eye out for illusions.

"Sure, let's get something to eat," she replied, with a grin. As long as this person was paying, there was nothing wrong with that in her eyes. She saw the ref narrow his gaze at her as they were leaving, and she frowned, while shrugging.

  • Ren left the building, her metallic hands tied behind her back as they strolled down the street. "Where do you want to eat? The choice is yours!" The short girl grinned up at her, steely eyes bright with excitement. In truth, the young Channeler wasn't really used to company, so going to eat with someone like 'friends' was a foreign yet welcome concept to her.

  •

Elypsis walked down the darkened, dreary street, that the other girl named Ren didn't seem to notice was such. It was a little unusual, to find someone so chipper and cheery. Her eyes trailed up and around, the sky-high buildings enclosing on all sides. Most rundown, and looking more like giant pillars of stone than anything, but offering none of the regality of such structures. Then her eyes trailed around. Few shuffled about, most wearing hooded clothing, looking closed-off, not really wanting to deal and mess with each other. Even though the place looked awful, lights from Ether-powered sources reminded one of the advanced state of technology.

Elypsis's eyes stared straight into a camera, that she swore was staring straight back, specifically at her.

Turning away from it, feeling uneasy, she spoke, "Um, I never really eat anything fancy, but let's try there," she motioned, pointing at a place, with a bright sign: 'Neon Tress'. "I've always wanted to try their 'Spark dishes', but never could really afford." She glanced down at her arm, seeing the time. Furrowing her eyebrows, she calculated how long it would take to eat. "We gotta eat fast, I need to go see Teri about something..."

  • "Sure!" Ren threw her one more grin before running towards the restaurant that was significantly brighter than the rest of the street. The white-haired girl jogged up to one of the waitresses and asked for two of their best 'Spark Dishes', as well as two drinks that would best go with it, tapping her card to the business card the waitress held out from the chain at her neck.

The short girl waved Elypsis over to a booth close to the windows. Sliding into the only side that could be seen by the cameras inside or out, Ren tapped the table with her steel fingers.

  •

Elypsis was still not used to the hyperness of this person. Most people were like zombies or leeches. Or a mix of both. Teri could be rambunctious, but she knew, always knew, that underneath that exterior there was a near-soulless man, waiting in the darkness, just waiting. And that was what the major issue with the world seemed to be. Darkness. Everyone seemed to have a certain darkness within them. Though, it hardly seemed to manifest in Elypsis herself. She was optimistic, but learned to be cautious. She wondered who Ren truly was.

The girl sat down, and waited for the meal to show up. Ren either knew this place, or just ordered haphazardly for the two of them. Elypsis wasn't sure if that was fine, but didn't say anything. Positioning herself in the booth, with her rifle next to her, she glanced down at the thudding on the table. "Oh? Steel hands? You don't have Synth-skin? Steel isn't common."

  • "If I lost my arms, I don't see any reason to make it look like I haven't," Ren rested her head on her aforementioned tech hands, kicking her legs back and forth beneath the table. "Besides, if I'm barely human anymore, I don't see the point in pretending I am."

The short girl's eyes were wide with an energy that not a lot of people understood. In this world, the brightest people get is when they're in the ring, or watching others who are.
