Aspen stared down on Barley's roof. She had just ran from a cargo ship her owners had sold her to. Finding this house, her best chance was here. Aspen's white and sand fur blew in the wind as a food bowl shook. She heaved a sigh as the cat below devoured the mush. Her amber eyes glistened as the moon rose. She curled up beside the chimney and thought to herself; "Is there any way for me to live unwanted?"

"what are you doing up here?" growled a cat. "friend or foe? "
-
A silver she-cat sat in a tree. The mute she-cat watched but did not interfere. That had been her life since her clan cat left her. She had learned to stay away from other cats and watch the world go by without so much as a whisper.
-
She looked up, her tail covering her front paws. "I mean no harm." Aspen perked her head up a bit. "Who are you? You seem like a cat who would have an owner."
-
Nameless watched and listened.
-
"good!" she purred. "as long as you mean no harm, but no, I don't have an owner. None of us do," she said pointing at the other cats.
-
Nameless jumped down from her tree and began to walk.
-
Her eyes seemed confused. "What? I never thought there were so many strays." She said turning to the new cat. "What are your names? Surely someone gave you one." Aspen stretched and walked toward the edge.
-
"my name is splash," mewed splash,"our mothers or fathers named us."
-
"I see." Her head nodded as she turned to the silver she-cat. "And who are you?" Her white tipped-tail curled down to the ground of the roof.
-
"do you know how to look after yourself?" splash mewed. "we have to work together if anyone is going to survive."
-
Her eyes gleamed turning up. "I can sure try and help, no matter the cost. Is anyone else with you?" Aspen stroked her paws with her tongue shaking off the feeling of being sold for chasing mice all her life.
-
"oh, cats come and go." she said "it's hard to remember them all."
-
"I see." She said looking down again. "Were you born here?" Aspen twirled her tail onto the edge.
-
"i have no idea," she mewed, then added, "i was abandoned as a kit."
-
Aspen closed her eyes. "I know exactly what it's like." She was silent for a moment. "I only remember my sister, and she died along with my other litter mates. My parents named her what I believe was Ivory. But that was ages ago. I'm not even sure if she died. Last I saw, she was running with a gash down her ribs. We were only learning to hunt at the time." She sighed and hopped onto the chimney.

Splash looked down, remembering
-
"I'm sorry. Forget it." Aspen nearly covered her tail in soot as it dropped into the rectangle. "What is this? I've seen this but never felt it." She said as she rubbed her tail on the roof.
-
Whisper padded softly up, her silver fur shimmering in the sunlight.
"Hi!" She mewed brightly to Aspen.
"Are you new around here?" She questioned, pale green eyes curious. -
"Sometimes smoke comes out of that," she mewed "twolegs are crazy! Having fires in their dens!"
