  • "Some things are just harder to let go of."

    >Intro<
I stood behind the counter of the small dinner all dressed up as the waitress. My caramel hair was up in a neat bun, my red shirt and black slacks were accented with a crisp white apron tied around my slim waist, and my name tag was pinned just to the left of the buttons on my shirt. My short heels clicked on the tile floor as I walked, though not very loudly.

This was the place I had been working at for four years. I have worked hard to keep my place here since I desperately needed the money. However, this place also brought back bitter-sweet memories for me. Though now, I hardly find time to cry on them anymore. I look over and see the small, four year old girl that was sitting in the booth nearby. All those memories were now wrapped in a small, shy bundle that was the joy of my life. Yet, she was still a secret from the one man that I needed here the most.

    >Backstory<
Brooklyn Hayes is a young woman of twenty-two. When she was eighteen, she had met the man she thought she would always be with. They spent almost all their time together, meeting at the small cafe where she now works the most. She would always say how much she loved him, however everything changed on one night.

Brook had just received news that rocked her world, and she had rushed to her boyfriend's house to let him know. However, upon arriving, he gave her the news that he planned to enlist in the military. She began to panic. She tried to talk him out of going since she didn't want him to leave, but it all just ended up in a huge fight. He wanted to go, but she was very much against it.

She left his house with tears streaming, rushing home once again. She hadn't had time to tell him her news. She figured she'd let him cool off before telling him, planning on letting him know in the morning. However, once morning came, she found out he had already left, bags and all. He had left behind his town, family, and her, all without knowing Brook was pregnant with his child.

    >Plot<
Your character is the man in this story. As stated, he did leave for the military and has no knowledge of his child. However, he has returned after four years of being gone, trying to settle into his life in town again. You can decide why he is sent home, and what experiences he may or may not have had. There has been no communication with Brook in the past few years, so he has no idea where or how she might be.

Upon meeting, Brook is very surprised, and hesitant on drawing close to him again. She has never lost any feelings towards him in all this time, yet she doesn't know if he feels the same towards her. Either way, she afraid of what his reaction may be towards their child, and whether or not he might leave her again. There is also someone behind the scenes who is trying to steal Brook's heart.

History;; Mason and his twin sister, Hailee, were born to teen parents who didn't know the first thing to raising twins. The teenagers left the two screaming children out by the road of a frozen winter day in New York. The twins were put in foster care almost immediately and they were kept together at all times. Mason and his sister were bounced around the world, from New York to Pairs and London. They had lived almost everywhere, but never stayed in the same place for long. While living in London one year, Mason took up learning different languages, feeling that it would be much needed since he was bounced around. When Mason and Hailee were around the age of fourteen and in eighth grade, they were adopted by a small family of two, Luna and Samantha, lesbians who had always wanted children.
Hailee took a quick liking to the two females, but Mason often strayed away from them. He didn't want to get emotionally attached to anyone, afraid he would be ripped from them. In highschool, Mason met Brooklyn and the walls he had built up throughout the years tumbled down around him. He became quick friends with her, always hanging out and going to parties. Soon after, they started dating.
It was four years ago that Mason told Brooklyn he was leaving to join the military. It shattered his heart to leave her, but he had always felt the deep connection and love for the military. Mason had left before Brooklyn had even told him she was pregnant. Now Mason is back in two due to his foster mother, Samantha being sick.

The night seemed to stretch on for ages, no sound could be heard for miles. The moon shone down on the small street in Brooklyn, New York, causing long shadows to engulf half the street. The stars twinkled above and the only real light came from the street lights that flickered on and off.

Shadows could easily be seen from the small across the street of a small apartment building. The shadows slipped in and out of the alleys, running along the darkness, keeping out of the way of the streetlights. Sixteen-year-old Isabelle Martin knew all about these shadows. In fact, they weren't shadows at all. They were people... teenagers who caused havoc.

They were known as the Silent Knights.

No one knew who these teenagers were, not even Isabelle, but she knew that they were thieves, delinquents. Every night, Isabelle looked out her window to see the Silent Knights slipping in and out of the shadows, their dark figures unseen by anyone but her. Ever since she had fist seen them when she was fourteen, Isabelle had always wanted to run with them, to be free of her mother's constant nagging and the strict rules of the government. The Silent Knights followed no rules, and that was how Isabelle had always wanted to live.

  • Sweet! I'll start us off.

Brooklyn stood behind the counter, wiping it down as another day went by. Her apron pocket held her tips, and a few people sat in the booth. It was a slow time of day so she wasn't expecting very many people to show up. Her caramel hair was up in a ponytail and her brown eyes glanced here and there to make sure her customers were satisfied.

Glancing over, she saw little Leah sitting quietly in a booth, her little legs swinging as she colored. Brook smiled, knowing her girl would be content with her pictures for quite a little while. She hated she had to bring Leah to work every day, but she didn't have enough money to pay a babysitter. I just have to keep working harder then. This thought was often what she had to tell herself just to keep going.

  • [Quick question, where do they live, like what state, city, country ect.? Also, Brooklyn works in a Cafe right? If not, I'll change that :3]

    White.

That was the only color in the hospital bedroom. White bedspread, white walls, white curtains. The only splash of color in the entire room was the small, dark-blue quilt that Mason had stopped by the hospital to drop off to his foster mother, Samantha, as requested by Luna, Samantha's girlfriend and Mason's other foster mother.

Mason had been away from home, fighting and training in the military. He had begged to come home when he had heard the Samantha had fell terribly ill, putting her in the hospital. The dark haired, twenty-three, year old stood at the foot of Sam's bed, watching her as she slept. It had been four years since Mason had last seen her.

Back then, Samantha had been smiling and laughing. Now, her face was pale as the moonlight, no color showed on her cheeks. When she had been awake, when Mason had first arrived at the hospital, her bright colored eyes had been dark and glazed over with pain.

Behind him, Mason heard someone clear their throat. Turning around, he came face to face with his twin sister, Hailee, who stood in the doorway, leaning against the door frame. "Hey Mas," she said, giving a small smile. Mason said nothing, just kicked softly at her foot, something they had done since they were kids. "Let's go get something to drink. You could use it, clear your head," Hailee said, reaching up to ruffle his curly brown hair. Chuckling, Mason allowed himself to be dragged out of the hospital room.

    ---

Mason did his best to keep up with Hailee, who ran back and forth from small shops and cafes, pointing out everything that had changed since Mason had left. Hailee, as Mason had noted, was still as hyper as she was four years ago. "Come on, Mas. We don't have all day, ya know," Hailee laughed, tugging on the sleeve of his sweater and pulled him towards a different cafe (? Not sure where exactly brook works) and opened the door. Mason let Hailee go in first before he followed him.

  • (I'm thinking a small town in Tennessee, just of the outskirts if Nashville, in America. Yes she works at a small cafe.)

Brooklyn heard the bell above the door jingle as a customer entered. She prepared around her, folding the towel she was using and wiping her hands on her apron. She looked up and offered a warm smile at the two as she saw them. Her heart seemed to stop though as she gazed upon them.

She recognized Hailee instantly, having seen her now and then since Mason left. But it was the man beside her that caught her eyes. It's been four year and, without seeing someone, it can change someone's features, even in the slightest ways. This man before her was just that.

He looked very familiar. His build, his features, and those eyes. Then it dawned on her. W-Was...Is that...Mason? She wasn't sure, and though her heart was pounding, she kept smiling at the two, trying not to stare.

  • [Sounds good to me]

Stuffing his hands into his pockets, Mason listened as Hailee talked a mile a minute. Almost as soon as they walked into the cafe, Hailee stopped talking and waved to someone. Mason's pale gaze followed the direction that Hailee was waving in, his gaze resting on a girl behind the counter.

The girl looked oddly familiar to Mason, with her brown-blonde hair and soft brown eyes, Mason felt a slight tug in his heart, but he had no idea why. Hailee grabbed Mason's sleeve again and pulled him towards the counter without hesitation. "Hey Brook. Look who's back in town," Hailee said with a bright smile. As soon as Hailee had mentioned the girl's name, Mason knew who exactly she was.

Brook ad been Mason's girlfriend before he left to join the military. He had always thought about her while he was away, hoping she was okay and secure. Mason looked down at his shoes as Hailee dragged him closer to the counter.

  • That was it. Hearing Hailee refer to him set it clear. It is Mason... Brook gave a nod and offered a smile. "It's nice to see you've come home alright," she said, though her mind was racing with thoughts and questions she longed to say.

She brought out a note pad and pen, looking between him and his sister. "Can I get you anything while you're here?" She asked, though her gaze would drifted over to Mason as they stood there. All she could think about was making sure he was fine, and not hurt. She knew he was here because of Samatha thanks to Hailee filling her in on what had happened.

She glanced over quickly to check on Leah as she sat in the booth. She was still in her own little world as she colored and swung her legs. Then a thought came to her. He still doesn't know...oh please Hailee don't say anything! (not sure if she knows Leah's his kid)

  • [Yeah, Hailee knows since it's her niece and all. Let's just say Brook told Hailee after Mason left.]

"Yeah, I just arrived this morning," Mason mumbled, looking up at Brook. "I'll just take a coffee, with just a little sugar." Mason had always hated sugary items, always doing his best to disregard them. Hailee on the other hand, had always loved sugar, that much Mason knew was the same about her. "I'll take a chocolate raspberry torte and a vanilla caramel espresso," Hailee said. Turning away from Brook, Hailee grabbed Mason's arm and pulled him towards one of the booths by the window. Mason noticed - slightly - that Hailee looked behind her once as they passed a child coloring on her own. Mason slid into the booth absent-mindedly while Hailee slid into the seat across from him.

"Isn't it great to be home?" Hailee asked, snapping Mason out of his thoughts. Hesitantly, Mason nodded, "Yeah, I guess. I mean, not a lot has changed in the past four years." Mason heard Hailee give a soft snort as she crossed her arms. "Trust me, dear brother, some things have changed," she muttered. Mason shot her a quizzical look, but his sister said no more, just stared out the wind.

  • Brook quickly jotted down what they wanted and turned around as they were leaving to get their orders. She couldn't help but smile slightly at Mason's order. He really hasn't change much then. She had always made sure not to make him too many sugary things while they were dating, one fact she had hardly forgotten.

She moved about behind the counter, getting the food and drinks ready. She practically knew the steps like the back of her hand now. She also grabbed a cookie along with their orders, propping it all on a tray. She was careful as she walked coming to their booth.

"Alright, here is one coffee with just a hint of sugar," she said as she sat it down in front of Mason, "one chocolate raspberry torte, and one vanilla caramel espresso." She carefully set the drink and sweet in front of Hailee, though kept the cookie with her. "Hope you enjoy."

  • [Slightly rushed. I have to go to the store real quick :3]
Hearing Brook approach with their order, Mason looked up at her and smiled softly before turning his gaze away. "Thanks," he said, grabbing the stirring straw. Mason chuckled softly as Hailee sat straight up almost immediately, flashing Brook a smile. "Hey Brook, why don't you sit down with us and we can all catch up," Hailee suggested and Mason shot his sister a glare, which she ignored. "I mean, it has been four years and all."

  • Brook looked between them and thought for a moment, sadness flashing quickly in her eyes at the mention of four years. However, it was quickly gone and replaced with a soft smile. "Just give me a few moments," she said and stepped to the side and sat the cookie in front of Leah.

She leaned down and spoke softly to Leah, not wanting Mason to catch anything. She checked if she was alright, making sure there was nothing else she wanted, then returned to Hailee and Mason. "Alright. Since its slow I do have a little bit of free time," she said smiling.

  • Hailee watched Brook walk towards Leah and set a cookie in front of her. Mason was staring absently down at the table, sadness shinning in his own dark gaze. Mason silently cursed his sister, tapping his fingers lightly on the table. Hailee scooted over and patted the seat next to her signaling for Brook to sit next to her. Mason sighed and looked up at the two women who sat across from him, both familiar to him. Hailee caught his gaze and held it for a moment before she spoke. "So Masy, how was training?" she asked.

Mason hesitated. He hated being put on the spot like that, and Hailee knew that. "It was okay, I guess. I was promoted to Lieutenant General right before I came home," he said. "Anyways, how have things been here since I've been gone?" Mason asked, hastily changing the subject. He hated talking about himself and would often refrain from it as much as he could.

  • Brook took the seat next to Hailee, noticing how Mason was a bit uncomfortable. She couldn't really blame him. "You must have worked hard for the promotion," she said softly. "Things here have been..." She paused and looked over at Hailee for a moment. "Things have been different to say the least."

She looked back at Mason, though her gaze couldn't hold his too long. Her hands worked at the end of her apron, wrinkling it slightly. "I mean, I've got this job here and I'm working to get my own place since I'm still kind of living with my mom."

  • "Well, it's good to know that everything is going good," Mason said, taking a sip from his coffee. He noticed Brook look at Hailee, which Hailee returned, the twinkle in her eyes vanishing as she turned back to face her brother. "We need to hang out more often. I miss the old days. Nothing has ever been the same since you left, Mason," Hailee said, taking a drink from her espresso. "Umm... yeah..." Mason said, her eyes glancing out the window for a quick moment before returning to the girls. Mason felt like something was off, but he didn't speak up, just sat back, the booth's seat pressing into his back slightly.

  • Brook nodded. "I agree," she said then smiled. "Why don't you both come over to dinner? I'm sure mom will live to see you again, Mason." She looked at him then back at Hailee. "And its been a little while since we hung out together."

That's when I'll have to tell him. There'll be no hiding it once he sees Leah running around the house. She wondered what he might think of little Leah. She knew it would definitely be a shock to him.

  • [Slight low muse right now.]
Mason hesitated at first, but after a moment, he nodded. "Yeah, it'll be nice to see her again," Mason said. Hailee clapped her hands together with a squeak of excitement. "This is gonna be so much fun. I can not wait," she said, the twinkle returning to her dark eyes. Mason nodded and smiled softly.
