  • 1. Dominant means that the trait will show up even if they only have one allele for that trait. Recessive means that the trait will only show up if both of the alleles for that trait are present.

  • Your punnet squares look fantastic but you didn't write out the possibly phenotypes for the kittens. When writing out the final results you can leave out whether or not the mother and father is homozygous or heteryzygous (that is just for your own solving purposes). When you report the kitten predictions to other people, they don't know what that means.


    After each punnet square write out the results like this:


    Example:


    Parents: Black x Chocolate


    Kittens: Black or Chocolate



    Does that make sense? If so, go back and add this to the end of each pairing. :)

  • Okay, for future reference it is really important to write "Chocolate" instead of brown. Otherwise other colors will be confusing :).

  • Good job! The rule of thumb is that a dominant gene will always carry the recessive one if there is a cat with a dominant trait and the other cat has the recessive one.


    This means that two black cats will be "BB" but a Chocolate x Black will be "bb" x "Bb". This also applies to dilute colors. Lilac x Chocolate = "bb" x "bb". But since Lilac is dilute and Chocolate is dense it means "dd" x "Dd" because dense is dominant over dilute, so the dense color carries the dilute gene.


    Double check your last two pairings. :)

  • Fantastic!!! Everything is perfect except a very minor mistake. There is no such thing as cream or red. They can never be solid colors. Because of the mutation they are always tabbies. :)


    So it is Red Tabby and Cream Tabby. :) :)


    A red Tabby Female = BB DD OO aa
    Red Tabby male = BB DD OY aa


    Cream Tabby female = BB dd OO aa
    cream Tabby male = BB dd OY aa


    So go back through because you shouldn't have any Tabby answers except red or cream Tabby. Since they are genetically solid colored cats. Does that make sense? :)

  • Change all (except the first) of your punnet squares to "aa" for each parent. None of these parents have a "A" because none of them are genetically tabby. :) Then adjust your answers. :) Remember to keep the red tabby and the cream tabby as such. Always assume that a red tabby is genetically a solid black cat. And a cream tabby is genetically a solid blue cat. Unless otherwise stated. :D
