I hardly had slept the night before my heart hammering away in my chest as I thought of my betrothal, a betrothal that had been arranged since birth. The anxiety caused my mind to go into overdrive as doubts filled my head and it hardly helped either that my mother had been pressuring me to be a dutiful queen. It seemed surreal that I should even be here yet it in truth I suppose according to my parent's wishes I was destined for it. Yet the anxiety still plundered my mind, I was no stranger to France it was true. Francois and I had been beaming little playmates long ago before we had even known that the prospect of marriage was on the table. Oh how young and innocent we were. I wondered if he also remembered those blissful days of scraped knees and tree climbing yet now everything was changed. I was grown woman now and he a grown man. I hardly had an idea of what he looked like, as there had never been an official portrait of him sent. Yet I had no doubt that years had changed him as they had me. I couldn't help but wonder if he was the same adventurous boy I once knew or if he had grown up to be a cold young man hardened by the brutality and betrayals that came to play at French court. Only time would tell. The dress I had chosen for the occasion was one of my finest. Its bodice was made of delicate blue and white lace with a fresh rose placed in my hair to complete the palette of french colors. It had been made in France because my mother had refused to allow me to be presented in any of my scottish dresses. She had ordered a variety of french styles in order to truly make me appear as France's new queen. Yet I had smuggled one of my scottish dresses in the mix just to remind that Scottish blood still ran in my veins. I hoped dearly that Francois would remember me and that our relationship didn't have to start on a chilled formal meeting as if we were strangers. The carriage came to an abrupt stop nearly catapulting me from the plush velvet seat. As soon as the trumpets sounded I knew it was time. The carriage door opened as I stepped out into the dazzling sunlight bracing myself to meet the entirety of the French Court and my betrothed. I gave a sharp intake of breath as I descended up the stone staircase to where my future lay waiting. [/fancypost] |
