a gif is a type of image! you can find a lot of them on sites like tumblr, but if by "gif" profile you mean one with moving images, you just have to search for gifs on tumblr/google/etc. you can put them into the avatar image spot just like any other image link.

check the beginning of the url for the image. it should be "http://yoururl.gif"

however, if there's an "s" in there (https://yoururl.gif) you need to erase the "s" and it should work.
