Welcome to Hogwarts! I am Professor McGonagall, and I will be walking you through the Great Hall this evening. There you will be sorted into your houses by the sorting hat, and you will join your class mates. I expect you all to behave and to respect your fellow students. There is Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Once you have been sorted Headmaster Albus Dumbledore will address you all and give you further instruction. I wish you all the best of luck this year.
Wand Woods, Cores, & Length
Wand Cores:
Phoenix- This core is the rarest type of wand core out there. These cores are capable of the greatest range of magic and also show the most initiative. They are extremely picky when it comes to owners and are very hard to tame and personalize. Allegiance to owners is very hard to be won.
Dragon- This core produces the most power and learns faster than other wand cores. They bond strongly with their current owners but are very prone to having accidents. They are also the easiest type of core to change to the Dark Arts.
Unicorn- This core produces the most consistent type of magic out there. They are the most faithful of all cores and usually remain strongly attached to their first owner. They are prone to melancholy though if mishandled and they are not the most powerful of the cores out there.
Veela Hair- This core is said to be temperamental, the only known Veela hair cores are used in the Delacour family wands.
Thestral Hair- This core is ONLY used in the elder wand and is said to be ambiguous although it contains other powers other wands don’t, like the ability to repair other wands, which was thought to be impossible.
Wand Woods:
Acacia- rarely used as wand wood, but when used it matches any other for power. It withholds all of its best effects from those who are not gifted and usually only produces magic for its owner.
Alder- the owner of this type of wood is not stubborn or obstinate, but rather helpful, considerate, and kind. To the right owner, this wand is extremely loyal. Off all wand types, this wand is most suited to non-verbal spell work this gives it the reputation of being of being suitable only for the most advanced witches and wizards.
Apple- like acacia, these wands are also rare and are only suited to people who have high morals and values. This wand definitely doesn’t match with the Dark Arts. The owner of this wand is said to be well-loved and long lived. People with good personal charm also are matched to this wood. The owners of Apple wood wand also can speak to magical creatures in their own native language.
Ash- cleaves to only one true owner and should not be passed on to the next generation, the ideal owner is courageous and definitely stubborn.
Aspen- does outstanding work with charm spells, also suited to accomplished duelists or people destined to be accomplished duelists. Owners of these wands are strong-minded and opinionated and are known as revolutionists.
Beech- a young owner is wise beyond their years, while an older owner is full of knowledge and understanding. These wands are not for the narrow minded or intolerant people. When properly matched this wand is known for its artistry and subtlety.
Blackthorn- this wood is also rare and is best suited to warriors. Though not necessarily related to the Dark Arts, people who practice the Dark Arts revel in its power. You will see this wood most often in aurors and the denizens of Azkaban. This type of wand needs to go through a hardship with its owner before truly being bonded, but once it does it is extremely loyal and faithful.
Black Walnut- less common than regular walnut, this wood likes an owner with powerful insight and good instincts. It looses power when it detects inner turmoil or when a person lies to themselves or others. When paired with the right owner the wand is one of the most impressive and loyal wands of all, with a flair for charmwork.
Cedar- owners of this wand have strength of character and unusual loyalty. These wands have homes with those who are perceptive and when crossed the owners of these wands are usually frightening adversaries.
Cherry- also very rare, this wand possesses truly lethal power
Chestnut- attracted to people who can tame magical beasts, possess great skill in Herbology, or are natural fliers.
Cypress- associated with nobility, these wands find matches in brave people and also bold and self-sacrificing people.
Dogwood- owners of these wands are quirky and entertaining, when the time calls for it though they can also be extremely serious wands and do serious spells. These wands are rather noisy though and refuse to do non-verbal spells.
Ebony- works well with transfiguration, happiest with owners who are happy enough and courageous enough to be themselves. Owners of this wand hold fast to what they believe and usually cannot be swayed from their beliefs.
Elder- the rarest wood of all, this wand is supposedly tricky to master, and is supposedly an unlucky wand. However it is also said that the owner of the wand will have a great destiny.
Elm- though it used to be believed that only pure bloods owned these wands this is not true. Elm wands prefer owners who have presence, magical dexterity, and a certain native dignity. This wand is also known to produce the fewest accidents.
English Oak- have partners of strength, courage, and fidelity. They also have powerful intuition and an infinity of magic for natural things like plants and animals. It was said that English oak was the type of wood used for Merlin’s wand.
Fir- demand staying power and strength of purpose in their true owners, favored to Transfiguration, want true owners who have a strong and focused mind.
Hawthorn- these wands seem to deal with wizards and witches who are going through conflict and should only be put in the hands of wizards or witches who have proven magical powers.
Hazel- a sensitive wand, it often will display the same emotional state as its owner. It works best with someone who can understand and manage their feelings. Can discharge if handled by someone with anger or disappointed and after its owner dies it almost always refuses to perform again. It also has the canny ability to detect water underground.
Holly- another type of rare wood, works best with people who need help overcoming anger and impetuosity and at the same time tends to choose owners who are on a dangerous and spiritual quests. Holly performance depends most on the wand core and is notoriously difficult to pair with a phoenix feather, but when paired with a phoenix feather, no one should stand in it and its owners way.
Hornbeam- chooses its owner for life and an owner who has a single passion or obsessive. They adapt quickly to their owner’s style of magic. They become so intertwined with their owners they will refuse to perform any kind of magic that goes against their owner’s principles.
Larch- strong and durable wands, it has a reputation for instilling courage and confidence in its owner. The owner may never realize they have hidden talents until this wand brings them out.
Laurel- cannot do a dishonorable act, but can produce powerful and lethal magic. Does not tolerate laziness in an owner and usually is happy staying with its first owner forever. If someone tries to steal it away from its owner it can make a spontaneous lightning strike.
Maple- owners are usually natural travelers and explorers. They are not “stay at home wands” and also prefer ambitious owners, otherwise their magic will fade. New challenges usually cause this wand to shine in power. Whoever owns this type of wood usually has the status of being high achievers.
Pear- prefer owners who are kind, wise, and warm-hearted. Owners are usually popular and well-respected. Very resilient to wear, not known to ever be in the possession of a Dark witch or wizard.
Popular- a reliable wand with consistency, reliable strength and power. Works with a wizard or witch with clear morals.
Red Oak- great dueling wand, possessed of unusually fast reactions. Ideal magic owner consists of light of touch, quick witted, and adaptable. Also creates distinct trademark spells.
Redwood-said to bring its owner good luck, but really the owner possesses quick reactions and can fall on their feet.
Rowan- supposed to be a protective wand, most happy when its owner has a clear head and a pure heart. This wood is not known to have fallen into the hands of a dark witch or wizard.
Silver lime- reputation of performing best for Seers and those skilled in Legilimency, that reputation gives the owner of a silver lime wand high status.
Spruce- to own this wood you must have a firm hand, when a spruce is placed with its true owner, a bold spell caster with a great sense of humor, it becomes extremely loyal.
Sycamore- eager for new experience, the ideal owner is curious and adventurous.
Vine- not very common, owners astound people who know them best, seek a greater purpose, and have a vision beyond the ordinary. Strongly attracted to people with great personalities that have hidden depths.
Walnut- go to owners with high magical innovation and people who are inventors. Attracted to people who are extremely intelligent.
Willow- has a healing power, the owner of this wand usually also has some insecurity.
Yew- can give their owner the power of life and death, but that doesn’t mean they always find themselves in the possession of Dark witches or wizards. Heroes can also obtain this wand. The wand never chooses a timid or mediocre owner.
Length and Flexibility: Most wands are nine to 14 inches long. Longer wands make up for a physical peculiarity while shorter wands are usually possessed by people who have a lacking character. Wand flexibility shows a willingness to change or adapt while rigidity shows an unwillingness/dislike to change.
