  • Assignment #1

My name is Leslie Markson. All my life, I have known that the Marksons are infamous for being the most active family you could imagine. Each night we would take a walk or a jog together, sometimes with our dog Jack. We also go to a city activity each weekend. Like a mass picnic, or meet-and-greet, or a marathon race. I loved every second I spent with my mom, dad, and older sister. These events were the highlight of my week.

Today was one of those days. A traditional Saturday for myself and my family. This time, we had headed out to the outside of Indianapolis, to a large lake for some family fishing. Already my best friend and his family had arrived with their fishing poles. He raced over to me as soon as he noticed I had arrived.

"Hi Leslie! Glad you made it!" He greeted, giving me a firm embrace. I returned it politely before replying.

"Hi Drake. Are you really surprised?" I said, laughing. Drake's laughter chimed in with mine, and soon I was chasing after him as he sprinted back toward his family. He passed me a fishing pole and we both took a seat beside the lake.

I tossed my line into the lake, watching with a smile as the red-and-black float bobbed upon the surface of the water. All was calm and quiet. Nearby my sister Julie was reeling in a fish and I passed her a shout of congratulations. However, as I examined her catch, I realized something was odd about the water. It... was a strange color. An odd tint upon the surface, if you will.

    It appeared to be scarlet.

At first I believed there was blood within the lake, possibly just from Julie's catch. But then the hue grew wider. I glanced toward the sky, and suddenly, in the blink of an eye, I saw a large meteor slowly crashing towards the ground. I was petrified and silent, eyes wide. I reached to snatch Drake's arm, but before I knew it a tidal wave was washing over me. Drake was swept away with a screech of fear. As was I.

Within a few hours that seemed like mere seconds, I had been carried away by the wave. I discovered soon that I was laying upon a sidewalk, the faces surrounding me seeming to be tricks of my vision.

And I swore I could see my father, my mother, Drake, and Julie's terrified expressions flooding my mind, and I knew they were all lost. Within minutes, my life had been washed away. And I was scared. More scared then I had ever been.

Ever since then, I have never been the same. All I am now is a paranoid shell of an energetic Markson, once renowned for her excitement and cheer. Nowadays I am only known as Leslie Markson, the last of my bloodline and a broken woman. Fear is all I know now. I am now only afraid of losing those I love, so I do not make friends.

My name is Leslie Markson, and I know now that love does not exist. All you care about will be torn away from you, whether you like it or not.
