  • Karmin looked at him like it was hard to focus on his face. Then she turned away, her eyes squinted closed in an attempt to concentrate. "I... remember... waking up from a nightmare," she said, recounting the events of last night. "And... I must have gone for a walk. I always do that when I have nightmares. Then I... I turned around. There was a-" she stopped there, eyes widdening. "Reno," she said quietly, the realization that something darker had happened than she had first realized. She eyes shifted back to him. "You are a..."

  • "Don't say it out loud." Reno said quickly, "I hate what I am and what those pigs tried to do to you..." He said. He wanted to add 'on my territory' but he didn't want to scare Karmin any more than he probably already was.

  • Karmin was quiet, looking at him still. But for some reason she was not scared of him. "What did they try to do?" she asked out with a rasping voice. "Tell me that would you? You owe me that at the very least, right?"
It just made so much sense to her now, why he had warned her not to go out walking at night. How he had known about it too.

  • "They were going to kill and eat you." Reno said rather bluntly, "other than that we usually stick to our own kind." Reno said. It may have been obvious what he was trying to do but he was trying to force a wedge between them. He wasn't sure if it was going to work but he'd try anyway.

  • Karmin looked confused. "Hmmmm... why? What did I do that warranted them wanting to eat and kill me?" she asked him, now even more curious. She also didn't like getting non-answers, so she was just going to keep this up until she was satisfied.

  • "They were hungry." Reno said, "and we stick to our own kind because we have a tendency to outlive out human partners... By about fifty years." He said.

  • Karmic's mouth hung open at that remark. "Fifty years!?" she now looked him up and down as she began to cough again. Blood came up. "H-how old are you really?" she rasped out worse.

  • "About 29." Reno said, "I'm not as old as the guy who attacked you the other night. He's actually a lot older than me." He said. In fact he was a bit younger than a lot of werewolves in this area.

  • Karmin coughed through his talking. He was much older than her, who had just turned 20 out of high school. But he didn't seem any older than her.
Meanwhile the excitement had opened the bleeding again. She started to unwrap the gauze to feel the holes in her neck.
"Last question," she said, because she didn't think she could handle any more talking. She was feeling super tired. "How did you end up a werewolf? Were you born one, or what?"

  • "Born." Reno said, "well. Sort of anyway. I was born human but my dad was a werewolf and decided I shouldn't be human." He said, "I was sickly when I was a child so it was also to save my life." Reno was planning on leaving as soon as she asked him to leave. He didn't want to overstay his welcome, nor have her start screeching he was a werewolf while he was actually still in the building to hear it. Though she seemed sensible and he appreciated that.

  • "Mmmm..." Karmin closed her eyes, slightly in pain. "Well... thank you anyway for saving me," she said, touching her neck. Then she thought. "Umm.... to change you... did you dad bite you?" she bit the inside of her cheek. Were stories like that really true though? Didn't werewolves have a poisonous bite, but more of the poison would cause a change?

  • "No. It was a blood transfusion. My mom had to give me one when I was born but my dad had to give me the other because..." Reno paused, but not for dramatic effect, "the strain of giving birth to me and then the blood transfusion... She didn't live." He said, "and the bite of a werewolf does not change a person. If it did your wounds would be healed and you'd have a heavy craving for meat." He said simply.

  • That comforted Karmin to know that, even slightly. She nodded. "Alright... thank you Reno," she said, moving her hand back down to her side. "I don't think I'll be coming back anytime soon," she told him. "They called the university. I think I'm done." She closed her eyes. All the stress was taking a toll on her body.

  • "I can bring you copies of the homework." Reno offered, "that way you can at least do something after you get better." He said. Surprisingly enough Reno had a very outdated computer sitting in the basement of his house and upstairs in what used to be his dads office was a working printer. Reno had nothing but time and lots of paper since his dad left him a lot of blank papers and Reno really didn't do much over the weekends.

  • "I don't know if or when they'll let me out though," Karmin replied, referring to the hospital. "They quite obviously would want to discharge me into the care of my parents... but that isn't going to happen," she entrusted him with this information because he had done the same with her. "My parents are alcoholics. Relative term, I know, but half the time they don't even realize I lived with them."

  • "I could apply for your care." Reno said, "I'd have to go fix the bedroom but I think you'd like it there a lot more than here." He said. He was expecting her to say no. Though if she said yes all he could really think of this ending would be a grim version of Beauty and the Beast.

  • She looked shocked to be honest, even in her current state. She would have thought that after their previous conversation about werewolves, nothing else would have surprised her.
"You'd... really do that?" she said, agreeing instantly if it was true.

  • "Yeah. I mean I owe you that much." Reno said and now was inwardly cursing. He had to go clean his bedroom for her now but it wouldn't take long. It never did.

  • "That would be nice," she said, smiling for the first time in a while. "I hope the rest of your p- I mean, your friends don't mind." she told him. "After all, that means that we will smell like each other for a bit."

  • "My pack won't mind." Reno said, "and as for the smell it's nothing some perfume wouldn't cure." He said, "I'll apply for your care then head home." He said. Reno figured she'd at least be in the hospital for another few days so that gave him time to clean the bedroom, get some sort of job, continue with school work, and most possibly fix the broken 'car' in the garage of his house. It would work but no sane human being or werewolf would willingly drive it.
