  • his only issue with private lessons, was simply that he was the instructor. it wasn't as if he absolutely hated children or juveniles, but there was a certain aura around them constantly that ticked him off. among others, he was often referred to as the 'icy major,' for he was older than any minor but had a cold and lonely personality. students would often be afraid to initiate any sort of conversation with him that wasn't relevant to music or the lesson.

    he couldn't understand why a certain student had made him sweat or lose feeling in his hands when she was around. still, he was just learning how it felt to open up.

    [font=georgia][size=8][color=black]Jasmin Park, a girl perhaps too inquisitive for her own good. Curious about mostly everything possible, she was always one to question things. Not just the normal 'why is the sky blue?' and such, but people's motives and actions. It was almost like a personal challenge for her to crack somebody's outer layer, getting past the harsh exterior to see what they were really like. That's how she had started with the particular. 'Icy Major'

    Joshua had fascinated her. While the other students would share hushed comments about him, the nervousness in their voices were evident, Jasmin would just cast them disbelieving glances. Despite the talking about how cold he was, nobody could deny his teaching abilities. Jasmin however, saw something deeper than his distant demeanor, she wanted him to warm up to her, know he had somebody to open up to. She wanted him to see her as more than a simple student, though she'd never even think of telling him that.

    Speaking of which, today was one of her classes. Humming a cheerful song to herself, the girl made her way down the halls. Heading towards the routine place where they usually held the lessons. Stopping infront of the door, she gently gave it a knock, calling out that it was her, before moving to enter.

  • joshua hated the light. it wasn't that he had found anything wrong with the warmth and glow that it brought, but he just had a pit hatred for it. he hated the way it blinded him during his lessons or how students would glance outside, totally distracted from the bits of advise he would give them. however, whenever the rainy season of winter and spring would arrive, he often left the windows open and the curtains drawn back. everyone thought that aspect of him was quirky, but he never cared.

    as dark and cold as the room was, all the items were placed in their respected locations. being a minimalist with ocd made the room both aesthetically and visually pleasing to anyone coming in. a simple black grand piano was the only object placed in the center with pots of miraculously growing flowers on the large window sill.

    joshua had been going through a few pieces for his next lesson, when the knock of the door interrupted his train of thought. silently, he glanced at the door and grabbed for a file filled with music ranging from moszkowski to schubert before placing it on the stand of the piano.

    his relatively new student, jasmin park, hadn't quite stuck in his profile of students, and he figured he would get to know her soon enough. joshua had an uncanny way of remembering specific things about every student, and she was no exception.

    without a sense of urgency, he motioned for her to have a seat without saying a word as he searched through the items on the desk for his reading glasses. shoveling through stacks of papers and paper clips was no easy feat, but he soon found his composure and placed them on the bridge of his nose.

    it was time to get started.

  • [fancypost borderwidth=0px; width: 400px; line-height: 95%; font-family: georgia; font-size: 8pt;
    [font=georgia][size=8][color=black]Though she'd only been going to the lessons for a short amount of time, the dim atmosphere that came with entering the room had already been classified as familiar. Though it was low in lighting, the room didn't have a feeling of gloominess to it. It was clean and easy on the eyes, the coolness that came with entering wasn't an uncomfortable cold, but a pleasant crispness. At least, from her point of few. Jasmin would often catch small mutters passed on along others about how they found it odd.

    As the elder male motioned for her to have a seat, his movement showing no sense of hurry, Jasmin gave a bright smile, accompanied by a short lived wave. It was her go to greeting, along with a small "Hello~"

    Jauntily walking over to the center of the room, the girl set her bag to the side, taking a seat at the sleek piano centered in the middle of the room. Feet waving below her mindlessly, she patiently waited for the silent male to gather what he was in search of. Once in awhile, withholding a laugh as her lips threatened dangerously to twitch upwards. The showing of amusement was witheld only because she had a feeling the mirth wouldn't be mutual.

    Upon seeing he had found the glasses, and was apparently now ready to start, Jasmin quickly took her chance to get a few words in, ultimately blubbering the question. "So, what's planned for today?" It would've sounded averagely normal, if said with a tone of mild curiosity, but hers held an odd eagerness to it. Much more so than needed for a simple music lesson, one that your parents had initially forced you into at that.

  • before taking a seat on the piano bench next to his rather enthusiastic student, joshua stretched, reaching his arms and hands in the air, almost cat-like. 'first is scales, then we'll go into the rest of the pieces. i've prepared Mass No. 3 in B-Flat Major, respectfully by schubert.' whilst talking to her briefly, he lifted the cover off of the neatly polished ivory and black colored keys.

    next, he reached for the folder sitting on the stand and opened it up, searching through the neatly stacked papers for the scale and arpeggio practices. once he had found them, he pulled it apart from the other work that was paper-clipped together and placed the folder in its original spot.

    'stretch out your wrists if you need to.' joshua had always made sure to loosen up the ligaments and muscles in his hands before playing in any practice or performance. he took a quick glance at his student to see if she was doing the same. 'next, i want you to perform a one octave scale for me. any one is fine.'

  • [fancypost borderwidth=0px; width: 400px; line-height: 95%; font-family: georgia; font-size: 8pt;
    [font=georgia][size=8][color=black]Listening to the instructors words readily, Jasmin reached her wrists out quickly, and began rotating them in opposite directions rhythmically, taking a moment to extend her fingers from balled up fists in a quick stretch. Jasmin's head turned to look at Josh, while she lightly went to place her fingers on the polished keys, enjoying the smooth sensory feeling is gave. A piano had always been one of the most beautiful things to look at for her, their range in style and opulence was fascinating, and the sound it played had a way of beguiling the listeners.

    "Sure thing!" She replied to his request with a sing-song voice, moving to hover her hands above the keyboard momentarily, she seemed to contemplate which scale to do. In the end, settling on F Major, Jasmin snuck Josh a momentary side-glance, he was so to the point. Yet again, that's what teachers were supposed to be weren't they? Nobody got payed to sit around and chat.

    Pushing the thought away, she brought her hands down, playing the scale from well practiced memory. It was the C that she'd had complications with when she first began playing, but that was hardly a trouble in her mind anymore. Enjoying the way the sound drifted through the dark room, she'd almost let herself get caught up in a dream like state, and was about to repeat the notes, until she quickly snapped out of it. Pulling her hands back and giving a slightly flustered smile.

  • joshua merely concentrated on the keys, eyeing them with an intense gaze before getting up and walking over to the other cabinet. he swiftly opened one of the drawers and came back momentarily with a silver plated metronome in hand. he placed it on the edge of the piano and adjusted the tempo, rubbing one eye with his other hand.

    'i want you to focus on the tempo first. try to memorize the feel of it, get a grasp of the speed and the environment you're currently situated in. once you think you've got the hang of the rhythm, i want you to play the same scale, but match it to this tempo. counting in your head mentally will help if you every feel stuck.'

    joshua gave a quick demonstration of the F major scale, one octave, before taking his hands off the keys for her to practice. as his hands glided across the keys, he knitted his eyebrows in concentration and accented each note, giving certain notes a 'ring' that resonated throughout the empty room.

  • [fancypost borderwidth=0px; width: 400px; line-height: 95%; font-family: georgia; font-size: 8pt;
    [font=georgia][size=8][color=black]Jasmin had focused on the metronome for a long moment and then some, dark eyes following after it rhythmically. She faintly heard what Josh had been saying, 'focus on the tempo, memorize, be aware of you environment, match the scale to the tempo.' Jasmin probably should've been more intent on listening, but her attention was drawn by so many things, she'd become quite skilled at focusing on plenty of events at the same time.

    Though her attention was immediately pulled in as the other began playing, her only center of attention on his fingers as they danced across the keys gracefully. Leaning her head down to watch intently, Jasmin's lips parted in a awe filled expression. Even a simple scale sounded to beautiful when he did it, there was a sense about it that she just couldn't achieve. For a moment she had taken a quick glance upwards, and her cheeks tinted with a slightly heated red. He had looked so concentrated... Focused...

    "You're amazing! I don't know why there's no harem of girls around you, they must fall in love with your playing... Or maybe there is and you're just hiding them somewhere for when I leave~" Her words held a playfulness to them, as she went to wiggle her brows in a suggestive manner. Though the suddenly reality of where they actually were, and the fact that he was her teacher and not friend set in.

    "Sorry." She coughed, as if that would erase the words, she glanced away awkwardly, going to place her hands on the keys, Jasmin copied his advice, playing carefully, sounding out the counts inwardly.

  • 'is this really what m students think of in a time like this...?' he mumbled quietly to himself, lips curling into a smirk. 'i appreciate you think my playing is...up to par.' sounding out each word carefully, joshua began to soak in her words, thinking and thinking again of what she could possibly be trying to tell him. still, he couldn't piece together the logic behind it.

    as she began to play out, he found himself assessing her once again, checking to see if she was matching her finger strokes to that of the metronome. once or twice, her accents had been to dragged on, but everything else was perfect. he was astonished that she had picked up so well off of just the first demonstration.

    'good. now onto the next task.' joshua slowly stood up from his seat on the stool and walked over to the blinds, opening them so the view to the entire campus was now in view. large pine trees swayed in the distance due to the rifts of wind going by.

    as he walked back to his seat, he couldn't help but notice how bright it had been with the light filtering through. still, he wasn't sure he could get used to it being that bright all the time.

    'i want you to preform another scale, but eye those pine trees out there. every time they sway to the left, i want you to accent those notes. just keep going up and down the scale until i tell you to stop. do you understand?'

  • [fancypost borderwidth=0px; width: 400px; line-height: 95%; font-family: georgia; font-size: 8pt;
    [font=andale mono][color=black]Jasmin's happy eyes had trailed after the male as he went to the window, a curious brow lifting as the blinds were opened. Was this some sort of ritual he did? If so, it was either a coming of age one, or sacrificial, in which he threw her into the campus below for not playing satisfactorily. After all, it was rather odd for him to let the light shine through, especially when it was this bright. Jasmin had to squint slightly to watch Joshua as he came back.

    Nope, no ritual, just a lesson. She should've guessed that by, 'Good, now on to the next task'. Her once eager gaze fell into a pout as she turned her head to glance at the pinetrees. At least if this were creative teaching methods he'd get an A. The feeling of immediate failure came over her. She was one of those kids who glanced out the window for a minute and was lost in thought. She gave him a evidently hopeless gaze before sighing softly, placing her hands over the keys before going to glance out the window, but two moments after she began playing, the counts got jumbled, she forgot about watching the sways and instead was glancing at birds which had decided to rest on a branch so suddenly. The thing that snapped her out of the misty eyed glance was when her finger ungraciously hit the wrong key making Jasmin give a squeak of surprise.

    It took her a moment of clearing out her mind before trying again, and again... And again.. Each time the same thing happened. Never one to particularly deal with failure well, Jasmin began giving annoyed whines and growls each time her finger slipped. "I can't do this." She complained, casting Joshua a childish glance.

  • joshua simply nodded his head, writing a few notes down onto the back sides of other musical pieces. without giving much thought, he realized that jasmin had suddenly stopped playing and instead began to complain about her 'failure' to continue the practice.

    'difficult, isn't it? whenever the trees begin to shake slightly, sometimes you subconsciously try to slow the tempo down or speed it up to match with the quivers of the tree. however, other things are distracting as well. the birds, the branches on the tree, the life of campus below; the scenery goes on and on. you can't help but take a glance sometimes. '

    abruptly, joshua stood up from his seat and walked over, until his chest was pressed to her back slightly. his hunched state allowed him to place his fingers over hers on the keys. his head was mere inches from the side of her face as he regulated his breathing to count in his head.

    'i want you try again, but this time i'll be your spotter. every time the trees shifts to the left, i'll accent the notes for you.

  • [fancypost borderwidth=0px; width: 400px; line-height: 95%; font-family: georgia; font-size: 8pt;
    [font=andale mono][color=black]He was close.

    That was perhaps the sole, and really, only important thing running through Jasmin's mind at the moment. When he walked over, she had hummed in mild curiosity, though was somewhat unprepared for Joshua to form actual contact. Jasmin's breath hitched until a point where it was being held unwillingly, this was normal. He's just helping, like with all the other students...

    Somehow, those thoughts didn't help. Overstimulated was a good word for what she was feeling, and it had nothing to do with the lesson. At first it had been the sudden contact of something to her back which made her tense, she realized it was his chest, which only helped her in feeling slightly warm in the face. Before her attention was pulled to his fingers as the placed themselves ontop of hers, out of the corner of her eye, she could see how near his head was. It was a moment she'd imagined childishly, but never expected nor prepared for. Despite how idyllic it seemed, she couldn't shake the mental image of a parent doing the same thing to help their babies to walk or a teacher showing a kid to write. She was, unfortunately, just another person who came to him to learn, nothing more.

    Jasmin suddenly wished the blinds were closed, and all light disappeared, for her face was no better than a flushed mess, bright red and flustered. Somehow, she managed to grasp what he was saying, nodding obediently, melting into the warmth of his all around presence. Giving a small smile of appreciation she nodded. "Alright. Thank you, I'll try not to disappoint." Why did all the other kids act like he was so scary? Josh may be distanced, but he was helpful and not overly critical. "You're really nice, I hope you know." She muttered, almost forgetting he was listening, before starting to play the scale.

  • how could that have been so? on numerous occasions, the words 'weirdo' or 'ice berg' were thrown around carelessly from his previous student's mouths. fortunately, joshua hadn't taken it to heart, but was he hearing correctly?

    instead of calling him a freak, she had complimented him. for a brief moment, he could feel a bit something fluttering in his chest, and it frightened him to be perfectly honest. it was almost overwhelming; too good to be true. he was 'nice.'

    his normal focus was throw out the window, along with all the previous teachings he had received. suddenly, he forgot how to play the piano. his fingers weren't reacting properly to his command throughout her performance.

    the heat radiated off of her cheeks, bright red from her neck up. his gaze was drawn to her slightly as she concentrated on her fingers sliding across the keys. worrying, he wondered if it was normal for people to become that red in the face.

    'are you alright jasmin? your face is very...' the words needed were cut short as he didn't know if speaking was the right thing to do.

  • [fancypost borderwidth=0px; width: 400px; line-height: 95%; font-family: georgia; font-size: 8pt;
    [font=andale mono][color=black]Jasmin stopped suddenly, fingers slipping away from the keys. A sudden feeling of churning stomach appeared, she wasn't sure if it were from embarrassment or something else.

    Though Joshua had cut his sentence off she had already guessed what had been on the tip of his tongue. Pink? Red? On fire? Like the colour of a tomato? She could feel the heat covering her face in a throbbing warmth, it only intensified at his words.

    How would she explain blushing so furiously without making everything weird? As if trailed off question sent her into a nervous frenzy. The girl gave a rapid nod before bowing her head, the intention to attempt hiding.

    "Alright? Me? You bet! Why wouldn't I be? Haha. I was just concentrating. Don't worry. You didn't cause this! I'm cool... Wait, you are too, I wasn't saying I'm better than you! Or that you're lame! You could cause somebody to blush if you wanted! But I'm saying that you didn't. Cuz, I was just..."

    The words had been so quickly said almost slurred, she didn't even realize what was coming out. Just saying the first thing that came to mind. It was almost anti climatic when she just suddenly stopped, giving a awkward cough and biting her lip. What else could she say? Other than a finishing. [b]"Yeah..."

  • 'if there's something wrong, you can just tell me...feedback is always better than nothing.' pulling away, he sat on the bench sideways, facing her. he knew she was covering something up, but he didn't know how to go about to uncover what she didn't want to reveal. there was an issue at hand that needed to be resolved.

    suddenly, a though had struck him, causing him to go stiff and ridged. had he made her react this way? had he done something wrong? however much she tried to cover it up, he could still see the heavy blush spreading throughout her face like a forest fire.

    'is it me?' he tried to choose his words carefully to not intentionally offend her.

    leaning in slightly closer, he attempted to look directly in her eyes. 'was i too close? i apologize, i should respect the student's personal space...'

  • [fancypost borderwidth=0px; width: 400px; line-height: 95%; font-family: georgia; font-size: 8pt;
    [font=andale mono][color=black]Was she that obvious? Joshua had questioned the cause of her blush fairly quickly, though, quick deduction would've made it evident.

    Out of the corner of her, Jasmin snuck a peak to him, now sitting facing her on the bench, his eyes curious as he leaned forward, carefully sounding out the words. After a small moment, the only thing she could do was glance back to her knees, tapping her foot in a repeated anxious manner, hands going to cover her face as she thought of what to say; how to reply.

    She could deny, say it was just that she was embarrassed over her trouble playing the scale, pretend she literally couldn't care less about how close he'd been. But, her acting skills weren't exactly up to par when flustered like this.

    After a few moments silence, she dropped her hands, daring to look over to Joshua, a unsure expression appearing. "No... I mean... It's not that you were too close in a bad way..." Her voice took the tone resembling that of a ashamed child. How could she go about saying this? In the end, she only gave a slightly strangled. "Yes... You make me nervous."

    It was a slip of the tongue, she hadn't meant it in a rude way, instead as if meaning she got butterflies when around him, or her heart seemed to beat harder than usual. But she couldn't seem to fix her mistake, the words wouldn't come.

  • 'i'm sorry...forgive my-' a slight 'ding!' had gone off from a tiny timer located on his desk. time was up and the lesson for that day was over. joshua was slightly afraid that they hadn't made much progress throughout the day, but at least he had gotten a feel of what she was experiencing. thus far, the lesson had been a near fiasco.

    'we weren't able to make much progress today, but hopefully next time we can start going through one of these pieces. actually, i'd like you to take this piece and try it on your own at home. if you're stuck, just wait until next week or come in anytime to ask me questions.' after handing her the piece, he stood up slowly and walked over to shut the curtains, enveloping the room in sheer darkness once again.

    'good work today, i'll be honest and say i wasn't expecting such high energy from a first timer.' he checked his wrist watch to see where he was in terms of time management.

    'again, sorry for making you feel so...nervous. i'll try harder next time not to.' he shot her a soft smile before turning back around to place a few papers away in his cabinets.

  • [fancypost borderwidth=0px; width: 400px; line-height: 95%; font-family: georgia; font-size: 8pt;
    [font=andale mono][color=black]Jasmin moved to pick up the bag she had discarded on the ground, slinging it over her shoulder, while holding the piece he'd given her tightly against her chest. The female couldn't seem to utter a word, instead she just gave a light hum as the curtains were drawn back. Of course, the darkness returned only when she was beginning to look mildly normal again.

    Dipping her head quickly after his words, the girl jumbled out a "Thank you for having me, I'm sorry for the fuss." Wanting to get out of there as quickly as her legs would allow, Jasmin made a dash for the door. Only to... Stop as she reached for the handle.

    Something felt wrong about leaving things like this. After all, she knew she wasn't usually this shy, not bothering to attempt to straighten things out would result in pointless stress. Though even if it would've been much less embarrassing if she left it alone. Jasmin wasn't one to worry about possible humiliation in the future.

    Giving a sigh, she glanced over her shoulder to Joshua momentarily, parting her mouth, it took a moment for words to come. "Don't get me wrong, you make me nervous in a good way. I hope you don't see me as strange, but I get a feeling around you, I don't really know how to describe it, but it's nice an-" She paused, the boldness in which her words had come out faltered. She had blurted that out without thinking, oh god, how stupid must that have sounded to him?

    "Aha, sorry. I'll see you next week." She offered hurriedly, before swinging the door open and quickly leaving. Whenever around Josh, her mind was always a whirlwind of confusion, her actions were constantly changing as if indecisive.

    The post was edited 1 time, last by ✮ v ✮ ().

  • furrowing his eyebrows, joshua once again was left to digest the unexpected. he hadn't had anytime to reply back to her before she ran out, but he was rather happy the day hadn't left on a sour note. she strictly said he made her feel nervous...in a good sort of way? he wasn't quite sure if that concept was one he could easily understand, as that was sort of an oxymoron.

    shaking off the feeling, he once again sat down on the piano bench and stared at the keys. because he had always wiped away the finger prints after every session, the keys were spotless most of the time. however, he could still see the notes she had played attached onto the marble, ivory keys.

    softly, he pressed his fingertips down and continued to play up and down the scale, gaining speed and going faster and faster. he smiled a little wider, feeling content that he was able to stretch his fingers for the day.

    he had another lesson for the day, but he wasn't sure if he was mentally prepared for it. the darkened room settled his nerves a little, but for the faintest reason, he couldn't wash away how close he had been to her. if he had tilted his head a little more, his lips would have met hers...

    he abruptly stood up from the stool, trying to get the vile thoughts to rid of his head. there was something severely wrong with his head.

  • [fancypost borderwidth=0px; width: 400px; line-height: 95%; font-family: georgia; font-size: 8pt;
    [font=andale mono][color=black]The week had passed by in a fine manner. After the lesson with Josh, Jasmin had ran home, partially to put as much distance inbetween herself and the recent events, and partially because the was a pound of homework just sitting, waiting to be done. It took her awhile, but eventually the girl had come to peace with what she had said, in a way...

    While she constantly didn't stress over it, the lingering memory was there. The embarrassment and annoyance she felt when she got all red around him, how she could feel his breath when he leaned down, his chest pressed against her back, if she had just been more bold she could have-

    Could have what? It was a piano lesson, there were limited options. Ontop of that, she wasn't in the mood to be banned and have a possible restraining order filed against her, or at the very least, make Joshua extremely uncomfortable during lessons. But not one to give up, Jasmin had just decided to go as if nothing had happened. She was still confused about her feelings, not entirely sure what to make of them, but for now, she'd just told herself to focus on learning. For the entire week, the piece she'd been given was practiced repeatedly, until, it came almost naturally.

    Now, after what seemed like forever, it was time again to head over to the campus. With a new found excitement, the girl had began her walk, glad her house wasn't too far away for it had become a rather frigid day, even the heavy coat and scarf pulled over her nose didn't take the bite of cold away. Not feeling one sliver of unease, Jasmin found her way to the room with the large piano, the one she so greatly enjoyed playing on. Once again, as if routinely, she brought her knuckles to the door, tapping on it rhythmically as if to ask for entry. "It's Jasmin, may I come in?" She sang cheerfully. She'd had some bad experiences with just walking in on people, so it was almost like a need to ask for permission of entry.
