The room, now that her eyes were adjusting, was cluttered with bookshelves, piles of books and scrolls, tables piled with leaves and herbs, and a few cots. The old woman caught her looking around and smiled. "This used to be where the students would come when they were sick. When I was young, it was always filled with bright eyed, brilliant patients. Now no one gets sick. Shame. An unnatural shame." The woman seemed lost in herself for a moment, before she blinked and shook her head, then stood shakily. "Where are my manners? I am Madame Veruse, the mistress of healing at this academy."

Her eyes traveled back to the woman and Eva gave a sad smile, "The talents of healing aren't often practiced, then." she murmured quietly, moving closer to the woman. She seemed much more comfortable now, and she gave a smile, "It's nice to meet you, Madame Veruse. I'm Eva."~

Veruse gave her new charge a smile. "Well, Eva, it's a pleasure to meet you. Please, sit down." She indicated a chair and then sat herself. "Now, for your first lesson. You are aware that magic is nothing more than using a certain language to convince part of the world to do your bidding. There are simple languages for simple things such as fire, water, air, and more complicated languages for things such as nature and light." She leaned forward. "But. Only one art of magic requires multiple languages to be used effectively. And that is healing magic. Every part of the body requires a slightly different dialect: skin, stomach, lungs, colon. As such, people who naturally understand even a bit about healing are exceedingly rare, and very sought after."
-
Smiling a little in return, the girl sank into the seat that Veruse had gestured to, curiosity in her eyes. Healing required multiple languages? She hadn't known that at all.... Hm.... Glancing over at Veruse again, the girl gave a slightly dejected look as to people naturally understanding were sought after. Not in this school. She could clearly see the headmaster's slightly disappointed face...~

"Which, of course, is why so few healers exist around this school," Madame Veruse continued. "They are often just snatched up by the ruler of whatever province they live in and put to work right away, without proper training." The mistress snorted in disgust. "Idiots. In a few years, my dear, you will be more powerful than every other healer in the land combined. Except for myself, of course."
-
Eva glanced up at her instruction, "I don't mean to interrupt... But... If healers are in such high demand, then why did the headmaster seem disappointed when I said I used healing magic?" She asked, her voice timid and meek as she stared at the woman.~

Madame Veruse shrugged. "The poor dear doesn't exactly approve of my methods," she said at last. "I make him, and everyone really, a bit...uncomfortable."
(I have a plot idea; Eva eventually learns that Madame Veruse learns more healing by kidnapping students and deliberately injuring them to heal them. Eva can either go along with it reluctantly for a while, or not. In either case, what makes her snap is seeing Shana is one of Veruse's 'patients'. She then attacks Veruse and we go from there. Sound cool?)

Ooc:
That sounds fine :)Ic:
Eva felt the hair on the back of her neck prickle a bit, "Oh." She said lightly, having taken a moment to reply.~

"But," Madame Veruse said with a smile, "I'm sure you'll enjoy my classes. Now, let's begin our first lesson. This patient was sent in by our school's guardian spirit, as part of a punishment for some incident with the rope bridge." She mumbled a few words, and the torches flared up. Now Eva could see that strapped to one of the tables was a certain centaur, staring at them with frightened eyes.
-
Eva's eyes widened at the sight, the girl paling. Punishment? She was sent to the healer for punishment? The girl didn't know what to do, standing there with wide and rather frightened and confused eyes. Was... Was this why the headmaster didn't like Veruse? For a moment, the girl was silent, trying to come to terms with all of this before swallowing, "Punishment?" She repeated almost dumbly.~

Veruse nodded with a smile. "Yes, punishment. What I do is not exactly...legal. No one nows about it, but many suspect that some of the 'dropouts' are my doing." She picked up a serated knife. Eva's former tormentor stared at the with terror. Her mouth was gagged, so she couldn't cry out.
-
The knife in Veruse's hand made Eva cover her mouth, "You aren't going to hurt her, are you?" She questioned, her face paling. As awful as the girl before them was, Eva didn't want to see her get hurt. Moving in front of the centaur, Eva's mouth went dry, "You can't hurt her!"~

Veruse's face became hard. "My dear," she said softly. "Much must be sacrificed for progress. By inflicting injuries on...volunteers...we can learn how best to heal those injuries. This young lady tried to kill you and your friend. Will you truly try to save her?" Liara stared at Eva pleadingly, tears streaming down her face.
-
"She tried to kill us, but that doesn't mean that I should return the favor and hurt her." Eva answered, staring at her teacher. Tears were threatening to fall as she stared at Veruse, "Healing is not meant to be practiced on people who have no say in if they 'volunteer' or not!" She didn't move from Liara, staring at Veruse as she began to shake, "I'm not going to let you hurt her."

Veruse gave her a sad look and shook her head. "I see. Then I suppose I must turn my student into a patient." She muttered some words, and all the air around Eva vanished, effectively strangling her. It would only continue until she passed out, while Veruse watched with a slightly sad expression.
-
Eva opened her mouth to speak before her began choking. Her hands wrapped around her neck, the girl struggling to breath as she started to see spots. Growing weaker then, as her vision began to fade, the girl crumpled to the ground and laid still.~

When she awoke, Eva was strapped to a table right next to Liara. A gag was in her mouth, and her wrists and ankles were bound. Veruse was humming slightly as she made small cuts on Liara, causing the centaur to whimper in pain, then healed them. "Oh, you're awake," Veruse said, turning to Eva. "Good. I like my test subjects to be conscious."
don't worry, Shana will come in with the headmaster and save them both at the last minute
-
Struggling the littlest bit, Eva stared up at Veruse and then moved to see that Liara was being cut. Flinching at the sight and then giving a muffled cry as her skin was pinched, the girl struggled. Veruse had turned to stare at her... Test subject? The girl swallowed as she focused her energy on something, anything... Water? Was there any water?~

Indeed, there was a little tray of water sitting on the table next to Eva. It was murky and reddish brown suggesting that Veruse had been using it to wash her hands of blood, but water was water.
-
The small female caught sight of this and focused, her breaths shaking and frightened as she began to will the water to gain in force, summoning it from the tray and aiming it at Veruse. Anything to keep the woman from hurting another student was completely fine...~
