Chapter 2
When I awoke I felt something comfy and soft under me. Blinking my eyes, I yawned, my mouth stretched as wide as could be. Everything was blurry. I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes to see clearer. Veronica was leaning over me.
"Wake up sleepy head!" She said playfully.
"Where am I!?" I exclaimed. I sat up in a flash, noticing I was in an elegant red chair. The floor was wood; it gleamed under the lights.
"We took you so that you could meet with Fang! It was my idea!" Veronica told me, standing up straight.
"What the hell is fang?" I muttered. I glanced around the room, seeing that the chair was the only piece of furniture in it. A glass door on the other side of the room opened, and Veronica stepped aside. A teen with unruly black hair and tan skin walked up to me. As he came closer, I guessed he might be about thirteen.
"I'm Fang," he announced, smiling brightly.
"Sooo.... Fang. Gonna tell my why I'm here?" I replied impatiently. What was going on?!
"All in good time Hazel," Fang grinned again. "Oh, and Veronica and Riley told me your name in case you were wondering."
"Where IS Riley?" I asked, my hazel eyes darting around the the room.
"Meeting with the council," he replied, vague as ever.
"That reminds me," a voice said.
Oh! Veronica!
I had almost forgotten she was there; She had just stood there silently, and I had been too busy absorbing what Fang was telling me.
" I should be with her." Veronica turned and strutted away, leaving quickly through the door.
"Hazel, I understand your mother told you that you have abilities, right?" Fang started.
"Well, yeah..."
I assumeyou thought she was crazy?" he raised an eyebrow, as I nodded.
"It can't possibly be true," I laughed. Man these people were insane!
"Well it is. You see, Hazel, we are in a secret room in an office building. That door," he turned, pointing his finger at the door. "Is no ordinary door. It takes you to places by using what we call 'magic' It'll take you directly into the elevator of the office building."
"Yeah right!" I burst into laughter. Who did he think he was fooling? This was all SO stupid... I wouldn't be tricked by him!
"Do I need to prove to you that this is no joke!" Fang snarled. "You ignorant fool! I'll show you why I'm called Fang!" At his sudden flash of anger I pressed myself against the back of the chair. His lean figure seemed to glow. He let out a painful sounding yowl as his shirt shredded off and white fur grew on his chest, while orange fur grew on the rest of his stomach. Black fur sprouted on his arms and became thicker and thicker within seconds. Fur grew under his pants also, causing them to fall to bits on the floor. The fur on his legs were black, while the rest of his body was the color of flame. A tail grew from behind him, and to my surprise his hands and feet shrunk into paws. He slowly stepped out of his shoes, as his nose elongated turning into a snout. And what stood before me was a fox.
"Woah!" I gasped, standing up. I ran over to him, and began petting him. I was speechless.
"No one really knows how I became able to shapeshift into a fox," he informed me. "But this is why they call me Fang."
"Wow........."
I need to take you to see the council, Hazel, they can tell what powers you have, and what you're capable of doing." Fang said. "Climb on my back."
"You're serious?" My eyes widened. Fang bobbed his fox head in confirmation.
"Sweet!" I grinned ear to ear as I threw my legover his back. Once I was on his back he charged towards the door. I was ready for a collision but we just.... passed through it.
We had come onto an elevator. I never thoght it could be possible but I guess Mom really wasn't crazy. Luckily no one else was on the elevator. Boy that would have been terrible!
There was a light tan wall paint on the elevator walls, and the floor had dark green carpeting. Fang started chanting. What was he saying? I hadn't clue. You'd better not be thinking I'M the weird one here. Suddenly all the buttons lit up, and the elevator began to rise. Faster and faster it went up. I felt like I was on a rollercoaster, it was WAY faster then most elevators.
"What did you do!" I screeched.
"Wha-? Oh, this is how we get to the council, Hazel. You'll learn it later." The elevator came to an abrupt halt, making my stomach drop. The door slid open and Fang stepped out onto a dark wood floor. In front of me were three seats, on one sat a cat, the other an eagle, and the last a mouse. They were very elegant mahogany seats. I hopped off of Fang and stood very still.
"Come forth Hazel," the cat mewed. "I am Mysti." Mysti sat in the first seat, as still as a stone. The seats were in a U shape in front of a brazier. Her grey pelt appeared to shimmer as I stepped towards her. "I represent balance. Hazel, you are very unique. You are wanted by the DarkHearts. You have the power to go into people's dreams. Whatever you tell them to do in those dreams, the'll do when they wake up. It is a useful gift but can be used for horrible horrible things when in the wrong hands."
Mysti continued. "You will be as protected as possible, so therefore, I give you the gift of balance."
She picked up a necklace I hadn't noticed before with her teeth. I held out my hand. When she dropped the necklace, I gazed at it. It was beautiful. It appeared small, it was pure gold with an H dangling from the end. It glimmered under the light, as I slipped it over my neck.
"T-Thank you," I stammered, backing away.
"Approach!" The eagle cawed, while I moved towards him. "I am Lupis; I represent strength. As you know the DarkHearts want you. I give you strength." he picked up a bracelet from the corner of his chair. Lupis held it out, as I cupped my hands.
"Come to me now," squeaked the mouse. I hurried over to the third chair. "I'm Renny; I represent speed. You will need speed for escaping the DarkHearts, so therefore, I give you speed." Renny gave a flick of his tail and the pain burned sharply through my body. I sighed as soon as it left.
"Thank you, I guess," my eyes glittered with hope under the dim light the room was lit with. Whatever these ‘DarkHearts’ were, I was sure I supposed to beat them. Let's just hope I could.
"Hazel," Fang nodded, swiveling his head to his back. "Hop on I need to take you home."
It was much later. I sat at the dining table, as still as a stone. Glancing down at the food on my glass plate, I closed my eyes, exhaling loudly. Mom sat across from me, looking worried.
“Hazel,” she began. “Why aren’t you eating your-“
I interjected, more harshly than I had meant to.“MOM! When you find out you have abilities regular people don’t how could you be expected to eat!”
Mom flinched, making me feel guilty as ever. “Look Mom, I’m sorry. It’s just ...this is so new for me."
“I understand, Hazel. It’s okay,” she sighed, barely audibly, and looked back down at her half eaten food.
“Mom,” I sat back in my cushioned seat.
“Yes?”
“I did have a nightmare the other day. I just didn’t want to worry you,” I confessed. “That’s where all this madness started.”
She nodded. “Mind telling me what the dream was about?”
“I’d really rather not,” I said, twirling my finger through my hair.
“Alright."
“My friend Joshua had a dream kinda like mine though,” I announced, out of the blue. If I could've taken it back, I would have, beacuse Mom got really upset.
“Almost exactly alike?” Mom wondered aloud. I nodded and she gaped.
“Wha-“
“It’s not common to have a dream like someone else’s dream! Especially someone with your power Hazel!” She exclaimed.
“O… K…” I mumbled. What was she getting into with this?
“Call him over now!” Mom ordered me.
“But you’ve never met him before and it’s like eight o’clock pm,” I pointed out, uncertainly.
“Well it’s never to late for introductions now is it! Call him now!” Mom stood up abruptly then hurried out of the room. I guessed she was heading to the front door to wait for him to come.
“Might as well get Fang to come too,” I whispered to myself. It seemed like Fang got cuter by the second. I took my phone out of my pocket, I almost always had it with me, and called up Josh.
“Yea?” he answered.
“Josh! I need you to come over now!”
“What...?! Hazel?! Are you out of your mind? It’s eight! I’d get in so much trouble!”
“It’s urgent!” I hissed. “My mom needs you!”
“Why-“
I hung up, then quickly punched in Fang’s number. One ring. Now three. Four rings.
“Hazel?”
“Yeah, hey Fang,” I purred. “My mom is going crazy about something I think it has to do with my power. Can you come over?”
“Sure,” he said, as the doorbell rang. “On my way.”
I got out of my chair.Grumbling, as I walked out of the dining room. I heard the front door open. Running to where my mom was I saw, Josh was closing the front door behind him. Suddenly the door flew open again and Fang walked in.
Mom gasped and stared, wide-eyed, at Joshua.
“Let’s move into the living room,” I said, awkwardly. "It’s a tad bit crowded here.”
I ushered them all into the living room, where we each sat down in purple ‘sofa chairs’ as I called them. Thank god we had four of them.
“So…. Who’s gonna explain to me why I’m here?” Josh asked once we were all settled. Josh looked around the room, probably thinking this was very odd.
Mom gazed at Josh more, and he proceeded to look creeped out.
“Josh, I have……. gifts. You know what, I’d better show you, um, go to sleep,” I said.
“Um……. no”
Argh! I had to get him to sleep! What was that spell Riley had used to make me fall asleep! Erm… AHA! Serpados!
“Serpados! Serpados!” I chanted. Josh’s eyelids drooped until he slumped over in his chair.
“Impressive,” Fang grinned at me. I nodded my thanks then concentrated hard. I wanted to get into Josh’s dream. No, I HAD to get into Josh’s dream. I thought about him, and sleeping, until suddenly darkness surrounded me. The only light was coming from a glowing blue door. It had yellow letters etched in it that read, Joshua Smyth. Just like what happened before! When the power went out. I opened the door and walked through it. The world around me had changed from darkness to … to… well… I don’t know what you’d call it. Plants surrounded me, it was a very lush place, though I didn’t know what most of the plants were. Where was I? I looked straight ahead and saw Josh slice through a dinosaur. I ran up to him, skidding to a halt.
“Joshua! Where are we!” I panted.
“No time!” he held out his hand towards me and a sword materialized in it. He thrust the sword towards me.
“Huh?”
He whirled around in the other direction, I noticed a T-Rex speeding towards him.
“Josh be careful!” I screamed, jogging to his side. Before the T-Rex could reach either of us I ran up to it and stabbed it with my sword. Green goo squirted out and splashed all over my favorite blue jeans. This was NOT going to come out in the washer.
“I wanted to kill that one Hazel!”
“Well too bad!” Cause it’s time for you,” I held my sword in the air. “To wake up!” I screamed jabbing the sword into the ground. Blackness consumed everything as the world slipped from my grasp.
I sat up back in my chair.
“Where’d that goo on your leg come from?” Josh asked, yawning.
“You’re dream, remember, you sliced over a dinosaur.” I answered.
Fang laughed. “Looks like you had a thrill of a dream!”
“Not funny dude. These were my favorite-“
Josh cleared his throat. “Please explain what is going on,”
I turned my head to look at Mom. “Hey Mom, can you explain, I-I need to bathe...” I stood up and hurried out of the room before she could answer. I really didn’t feel like explaining that I had superpowers to my friend. I ran up the stairs and into the bathroom. Quickly undressing myself, I tried not to touch the gooey stuff on my pants. I drew my bath, and stepped in. The bathroom was tiled a baby blue color. I reached out of the tub and grabbed some toilet paper then rested my feet on the brim. I put the toilet paper in between my toes, and took the nailpolish from the soap holder… thing. Though I’m in seventh grade, I never figured out the proper name for it. I painted my toenails red, being careful to keep them out of the water as I cleaned myself. NO GOO WANTED. I sighed, relaxing in the warm water, I just wanted one moment now, one moment where I could think I was normal. One moment to get my thoughts together, for I knew, I would never be the same again.
“Hazel!” my mother’s urgent sounding yell interupted my thoughts. “You need to get down here! Quick! I-It’s Josh.”
Chapter 3
I raced into the living room. My mom had sounded as if Josh was in trouble. He was my best friend. He had BETTER not be in trouble. I skidded to a stop in front of the three purple chairs. I had quickly thrown on my clothes. A ripped up purple T-Shirt and some very short shorts.
"What's the matter!" I demanded. My mother was holding a puppy and Fang was sitting in a chair grinning triumphantly. "What's going on! Where's Josh?"
Fang leaned forward and pointed a finger at the puppy. "There," he said with a smug look on his face. "There's Josh."
I shook my head. "Um okay, yeah right," I scoffed. "Now where is he."
My mom's face softened with understanding. "He's a shapeshifter, Hazel, like Fang."
"But," Fang began. "He's a wolf."
So many things had happened recently I had no choice but to believe them. This was crazy though! My friend? A WOLF? "That's a wolf?"
"He'll grow," Mom put him down on the ground. "He can't talk in this state until he's full sized. After the first transformation it takes a few days for werewolves to become full size."
The 'toes' on his paws started to spread apart, and his fur began to thin. His paws began to form into hands and his spine straightenend. His snout shortened and became a nose, and his tail shortened. The rest of his fur fell in clumps to the ground and there sat Josh.
Joshua stood up, blushing furiously. My mother took a step backwards, as Fang stood up and walked over to Josh. Fang's clothes fell to the floor in tatters, as he phased into a fox.
He nodded to Josh. "Get on, I'll take you home."
Josh scrambled onto Fang's back, and Fang galloped out of the room.
I turned to my mother, blinking. "Is he allowed to do that?"
"What? Oh, transform inside? Yeah, sure, I don't mind," she responded.
I spun around facing the direction Fang left in. I shuddered, I hated awkward moments, and that my friend, was one of them.
I lay on my back in bed. Calmly. Night had fallen and I finally had my chance to think about what had been going on. My mom and Fang had explained to Josh that he had shapeshifting abilities. I had powers. And I was somehow destined to defeat the DarkHearts. Did I know where the DarkHearts were? No. Did I know how to defeat them? No. And did I know who to kill for them to BE defeated. Heck no. I reached over to my nightstand. I picked up my phone and called up Fang.
"Hazel. What on earth do you think you're doing calling this late? Do you know what time it is?" Fang moaned.
"I'm sorry Fang. It's just... I don't know what to do about the DarkHearts."
"Alright, I'll tell you what, I will help you to stop them. I've been doing research on them. What they really want, is for everyone to think they're the ruler. If they have someone with the power of mind control or anything close to that. Game over. We lose," he replied. "You'll need a group. People with powers. Tomorrow I'll show you how to find those people, but I want to sleep first. Call me tomorrow, around four o'clock, after you get out of school. Then we can discuss things further."
There was a beep as I hung up. I reached over and put my phone on my nightstand. Fang was gone. I was alone in the cool silence of night. I slowly drifted into sleep.
"Come to us....." The booming voice echoed around me. Some invisible force was pushing me towards a hole in the ground. "Hazel.... Come to us..."
"No! No! No!" I squirmed in vain, against whatever was pushing me forward. I was at the edge of the whole.
"This is your last chance Hazel. Join us or everyone you love will suffer," The voice was getting quieter and quieter.
"Never!" I screamed, as the force threw me into the hole.
I was falling... No! I was swimming. Swimming in an endless black sea of black waves with black water.....
I gasped sitting up in my bed with a start. My hands were clamy and I felt very hot. I grabbed my off of my nightstand and called up Fang.
"Hazel?"
"Yea, about what you said last night," I began. "What do you mean find a team?"
"Okay, here's the plan. You call Joshua over to your house and convince his parents he's been kidnapped. Tell your mom to inform your teacher that you're going on a vacation. I'll do the rest. Oh and Hazel. I got you into some martial art classes. So you can learn fighting moves. Uhm... Then I'll come to your house at two. Make sure you have Josh!"
"Got it," I twirled my hair with my finger.
"Bye." Fang hung up.
I checked the clock on my phone. It was tweleve. Two hours! I dialed Josh's number. One ring.... Two... Three... Come on Josh answer, I pleaded silently to myself.
"Hey," he answered.
"Oh thank god! Listen up. You've gotta come over now! Don't tell your mom!"
"Why?" he sounded confused.
I quickly explained everything Fang had said. I don't think he understood why, but at least he listened.
"I'm on my way," he said, hanging up.
The doorbell rang about ten minutes after Josh and I hung up. I hurried and answered it, letting Josh inside.
"So-?" Josh looked at me quizzically.
My mom hurried into the main hallway. She kissed me on my forhead. "Fang called, he told me everything."
I suddenly heard a police siren sound outside the window.
Mom raised an eyebrow. "And.. I told Josh's mom he was kidnapped."
There was then silence.
Breaking the awkward quiet, the doorbell rang and Fang pushed open the door.
"Miss me much?" he grinned, brushing the hair from his eyes.
"Notta," Josh glared, at fang and I thought I saw.... something... flash in his eyes. Jealousy maybe? I shrugged.
"Nope," I looked at Fang then back at Josh.
"Aww, you two are so mean," Fang said. He was wearing a red cloak. Reaching into the pocket of his cloak, Fang pulled out a book.
My mother's eyes widended. "Is that the-"
Fang cut her off. "Wizard's Address Phone Book? Yes."
"But-those, they're all sold out. Very rare. They stopped selling them five years ago."
"I have my connections." Fang chuckled.
"What's the Wizard's Address Phone Book?" Josh asked, before I could.
"It's a magical book. All the phone numbers and address's of magical beings are in here. It updates itself, it's charmed though, of couse." My mother informed him.
"Wait wait," I pursed my lips, trying to process this all. "Why do we need a charmed phone book?"
"Can we please talk about this in a more comfortable place?" Fang sighed. "I had to run all the way here."
I felt bad for him. What was comfortable. And... private. I didn't want my mother standing there all the time. It was creepy!
"How 'bout my room?" I suggested.
Fang nodded. "Great."
I walked towards the stairs and Josh started to follow, when Fang held out his gloved hands. The gloves he wore were black and fingerless, the kind I had asked my mother for when I was five.
"Not you, Joshua." He stared daggers at Josh. Turning, Fang whispered something in my mom's ear and she bobbed her head.
"I can do that," she said. "Come on, Josh, I'm going to teach you more about... your kind." As she took his hand, I saw worry in Josh's eyes. What could be troubling him? She led him out the front door and into the yard.
Fang sat next to me on my bed, holding the book in his lap. He had explained pretty much everything to me. We would need a team... A brilliant team, at that. He at told me that we would need to find five other kids, then after we gathered them up, we'd make up a plan. After the plan was made, we'd have five days to each go out on our own, and find five other kids. We'd have twenty then. A mini army. I'd begun to think of it as the tenacious twenty plan. Assuming it would work, we could then send the best of our ranks to spy on the Darkhearts. Yep, five would do. They'd find out what the Darkhearts were planning then report back to us. A new plot, with new and improved tactics. For we would have been training our twenty. In all, our group would have twenty-eight people. Wow! Fang turned to the table of contents in the book. Then looked up.
"Hazel, we'll need an ice mage," he said. Fang pressed his index finger hard to the book. Pushing the book further from him, I felt a fierce wind sweep through my room, turning the pages of the hardcover. As the draft faded away, Fang leaned forward, picking up the book again.
"WHAT WAS THAT?" I gaped.
Fang chuckled. "Hazel, this book is charmed, remember?"
"Oh...."
Fang began flipping pages. On each page there was a portrait of some... wizard? I guessed it was a wizard.
"Aha!" Fang, stopped on one page. "An ice mage, they can be very good healers you know. And this one, just so happens to live near your school. We'll visit the house tomorrow then?"
I nodded. "But what about the others we have to gather?"
"Hazel, Hazel, Hazel, it will take awhile to gather ALL of them." He said it like I was an idiot. "They are afterall scattered all around the world. We're only looking for people in this state though. But if there are none in this state we may need to travel."
"Sorry!" I said sarcasticly. Wait a minute.... This means something... Something important..."No school!"
I jumped from my bed and began to happy dance. "No school! No school! No school!"
Fang laughed. "Nope, because tomorrow is the start of spring break."
"No school... No... school?" I trailed off completely crushed. "I thought... Aw!"
"Sorry to stomp on your spirits." Fang was grinning ear to ear. I glared at him.
"See you tomorrow!" I hissed pulling him up, and pushing him out the door. "Good riddance."
I yawned, slumping in my bed. It had been a long night. Fang had seemed... interesting... I was upset with him. He'd been rude, the way he crushed my hopes and dreams of no school.... I jumped, hearing my phone ring. A phone ringing at.. what? Um..six in the morning, was NOT cool. I seized my phone and groaned. Ugh! It was Fang....
"What?" I barked, answering the phone. I gripped it so hard, it nearly snapped.
"Woof! Woof! Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed, by the way, it's you." Fang snickered. "Anyway... look out your window."
"What?" I blinked, completely dazed. "Oh, alright."
I stood, and trudged to the window. When I saw Fang standing in front of a red lamborghini I dropped the phone in utter shock. Why the hell does he have a lamborghini! I pushed open my window.
"Fang!" I called. "How long have you been spying on me!"
"Over an hour! I've been trying to wake you up.... You're kinda cute when you're asleep," he snickered.
I flushed, my face red as a cherry. "Why!" I demanded.
"We need to go and look for that ice mage now, Hazel," he completely dodged the subject.
"Why didn't you just knock on my door!" I hissed.
"Come on," he gestured with his hands. Turning, Fang opened the door of the car and hopped in.
I groaned, but knew I had to go. My phone made a buzzing noise. I reached down and picked it up then snorted when I saw the text.
Come on Hazel! I'm waiting! Don't worry about waking your mom! I already texted her!
It read. My fingers hit the keys quickly.
Fine!
Wtf is your problem? Gah!! I'm on my way -_-
Imade my wayto my closet, stepping over piles of clothes and random junk. Thenquickly threw ona pair a denim jeans and a white shirt. I stuffed my phone into my pocket and quickly raced downstairs.
Iwalked outtowards the lamborghini, and Fang waved to me on my way.
"Took you long enough!" he beamed, as I slid into the passenger's seat.
"Yeah? Well if you'd given me more of a notice-"
Fang cut me off. "I told you we were looking for the mage today, okay? You should assume I come early."
"A little too early for me," I grumbled, flipping my hair over my shoulder in anger, as Fang turned the key in the ignition.
"Aww, you're no fun, Hazel."
