welcome to briar manor, a home for the the mentally ill. that's exactly what the sign outside says. this is nowhere similar to a home, and nowhere near just some normal asylum. this is an asylum for the supernatural. let me guess; you discovered your power. you tried to keep it a secret, but one day, you let it slip around your parents. they looked at you as if you had lost your mind. "a witch? honey, your not little anymore. stop with these stories." you fought with them about how you weren't lying. you even tried to show them. "dear, you can't transform into an animal. it's impossible." your powers didn't work when you tried. you got sent to your room for telling them nonsense. days, weeks, even months went by, and then it happened again. your powers appeared.
you went back to your parents, telling them about them, hoping, praying that they would believe you. "you can't disappear into thin air and you're not dead." once again, your powers didn't show up when you tried to show them. you got sent to your room again. this time, they didn't brush it off as a prank. they searched up things, places, even people. finally, they found a place that seemed to take in people such as yourself. briar manor. they clicked on the link to the website, reading the information that was available on the website. what they failed to mention was that this isn't a place for the mentally ill. it's for the supernatural. they failed to mention that the stories that they're child had been telling them were true.
a week passed since your parents signed you up to enter the asylum. everything seemed normal until two men arrived on your doorstep, both of them dressed in black suits, black sunglasses covering their eyes. they looked government related, but somehow, you could tell that they weren't. you looked to your mother and father as they watched you. your mother was crying, and you father was close to it, trying his best to comfort her. why were they like this? the next thing that you know, you were being dragged toward the black escalade that the two men arrived in. what was happening? why weren't your parents trying to stop them? you yelled for your parents, demanding answers, calling for help, but they didn't try. they didn't even say anything, just watched from the doorstep as you were driven away.
after what felt like days, you arrived at the manor. it was surrounded by trees and thick brush. the building looked abandoned, but once the doors to the huge manor opened, the term abandoned was far from what it actually was. the main room was filled with people, or at least that's what it seemed like. The staff were dressed in black, the ladies almost dressed like nuns. the men were in black slacks and a white button-up shirt. the patients were wearing all sorts of clothing. some were in night gowns, and some were actually dressed. you guessed that dressing casual just meant sweatpants and a t-shirt since mostly all of the patients were dressed in the attire.
as you were lead to your room, you could feel all of the stares from everyone burning holes into your skin. you could tell that it was rare for someone new to arrive due to everyone just staring at you as if you were a part of something that they had never seen before. as you walked down the hall, you could see a crowd of people in the corner. you could hear cheering and shouting, and the loud sounds of fighting. through a small hole in the crowd, you could tell that the two people were fighting weren't normal. they were like you. they had powers.
how do i know all of this? it's exactly what happened to me when i got here.

let me tell you about some of the people here. i'll just go ahead and list them.
;;witches;;
due to the salem trials in 1692, the witch population has drastically gone down over the centuries. they are still being hunted by witch hunters. over the last few years, many witch hunters had managed to get a job at briar, but they were instantly "fired" if their real focus was revealed. as in fired, i mean that they were burned alive on the stake, as a witch would be killed.
-strengths-
spell-casting. every witch has this ability. witches are able to learned spells if they have a spell book or they are taught by another witch that is stronger than them.
stored spells. every witch has this ability. if a witch feels as if something bad is going to happen, they can cast their spell ahead of time, saving the words or gestures until the timing is right.
identification. witches can recognize sorcerers on sight. In addition, a witch can recognize another witch via physical contact. a handshake or brushing the arm of another witch will alert the witch to the other's connection to magic. the older and more experienced the witch, the more likely she can identify the other's strength.
candles. witches can gain power for a certain amount of time if they are around candles. candles help them a lot when it comes to channeling powers with their ancestors and other witches.
-weaknesses-
vocalization. witches must cast their spells vocally, even if the words are a muttered whisper. a gagged witch is powerless.
visual and tactile. many spells require line of sight or touch (such as healing spells), and therefore being in the dark, or unable to reach the target prevents the witch from casting a spell and using their magic against their enemy.
power cap. some witches are quite weak and limited in their spell-casting abilities, while others are frighteningly strong. a weak witch may learn as many spells as they would like, but it will not increase her raw magical power. ironically, it is safer to be a weak witch as opposed to a strong one. a weak witch will not be able to cast particularly strong spells, and will collapse from exhaustion long before a strong witch will. on the opposite end of the spectrum, because of their raw strength, a stronger witch runs the risk of burning themselves out and/or killing themselves from channeling too much magic and performing too intricate and demanding of spells.

-strengths-
physical form. werewolves have superior strength and agility.
weaponry these creatures have elongated, sharp fangs and claws.
senses. their sight and smell are enhanced.
infection. werewolves can spread the curse by biting a human. they will turn into a werewolf during the next full moon. they can also kill vampires by biting them.
-weaknesses-
silver. piercing a werewolf through the heart with anything silver will kill them.
dismemberment. dismembering a werewolf's head with kill it.

-strengths-
enhanced senses. vampires have enhanced speed, strength, sight, smell, and hearing. these enhanced abilities help them a lot in combat.
regeneration. after feeding on blood, vampires most notably have the ability to regenerate wounds. the more regeneration needed, the higher quantity of blood needs to be consumed. vampires who have not fed in some time will struggle to regenerate wounds with speed, and wounds regenerate their fastest within an hour of feeding, at a max of 10x the normal human rate.
emotions. vampires have the ability to cut off their emotions. an example of this is when vampires don't feel sympathy for killing someone, or feeding from someone.
-weaknesses-
vervain. vervain is similar to acid for vampires.
sunlight. this is the bane of any vampire’s existence. direct sunlight contact has the ability to kill vampires in contact after only a few minutes. the effect on the vampire turns them to ash. vampires can only come into contact with sunlight without being burned if they have a sort of jewelry, most likely a ring, that has had a spell casted on it that allows them to walk in sunlight.
feeding. nearly all abilities of the vampire are significantly diminished if the vampire does not feed regularly. a lack of blood can cause weakness, dizziness, confusion, decreased ability to tolerate holy objects and sunlight. regular feeding is a necessity of the vampire, one that consumes their thoughts if hungered, and a necessity that puts them in constant risk of being “discovered”. poor quality of blood, such as that from an animal, hardly slakes the thirst and offers very little boost to a vampire’s strength.
holy objects. objects that have been blessed by priests or divine entities are considered to be “holy” and have crippling effects to vampires. items like holy water acts as the equivalent to acid while items such as holy crosses may burn and melt the flesh on contact. hallowed grounds are more commonly known as churches or any place of worship. vampires who find themselves on hallowed grounds may start to feel very ill and weak after a while. vampires on hallowed ground experience their strengths and abilities diminished to 50%.
wooden stakes. if a vampire were to be staked in the heart by a wooden stake they would die. this is permanent death for a vampire.
;;ghosts;;
-strengths-
invisibility. ghosts have the ability to disappear. they get to choose if they want to be seen by others or not. ghosts can see other ghosts if they are invisible at the moment or not.
electromagnetic interference. all ghosts disrupt nearby electronics with their presence
thermokinesis. nearly all ghosts can lower or drop the surrounding temperature with their presence.
telekinesis. they are able to move virtually anything with their minds if they have enough concentration on the objects. with practice they can become stronger telekinetics, able to manipulate many simple objects at once. very powerful ghosts are highly capable telekinetics, able to throw people.
teleportation. Ghosts can teleport (be able to move in the blink of an eye to other locations). They often display a flickering appearance when using this ability.
supernatural perception. after death, ghosts can see beings that are naturally invisible, such as other ghosts.
-weaknesses-
salt. ghosts can be repelled by salt and can't cross a line made of salt.
iron. iron is similar to salt. it keeps ghosts at bay.
leaving property. a ghost can't leave the property that they were killed on. this means that the ghosts at briar were killed there, meaning that they can never leave the manor.
;;shapeshifters;;
-strengths-
shifting. shapeshifters are able to change from human form to animal form.
forms. most animal shapeshifters have one or two favored forms that they can move between easily. some animal shapeshifters can take on the form of mythical creatures, but it is easier to become animals that they have actually seen or interacted with personally.
partially shifting. most shapeshifters find it difficult to hold a form that is partially shifted, like growing working gills without becoming a whole fish, or just adapting eagle eyes, or turning hands into bear claws for weapons. it's like having a foot only half picked up from the ground. with more practice, the shapeshifter can hold it longer and even start to adapt different animal aspects into their one human form. it's a big balancing act. no shapeshifter can grow extra appendages, like a set of wings from their backs. their arms become their wings, just like a bird.
instincts. shapeshifters gain the instincts of the animals they shift to when they shift.
-weaknesses-
strength and agility. shapeshifters can't be any stronger, faster, or more durable than humans or the animals they become.
healing limitations. their innate healing ability does have its limitations. it wears a shapeshifter out with repeated use over a short period of time, until the shapeshifter loses consciousness. it drains the shapeshifter's energy and makes them ravenously hungry. too much healing, and they might even die from the extreme hunger, almost like they starved to death.
shifting limitations. shapeshifters can only maintain their forms when they are conscious or sleeping normally. they revert to normal form when they are knocked unconscious. they also tend to revert to normal form when their innate healing ability kicks in.
stuck in animal form. if an animal shapeshifter goes too deeply into the instincts and mindset of the animal whose form they take for too long, they may never pull back out of that form willingly, and they may never fully return from that mindset even if they are knocked back into their natural form.
;;hybrids;;
-strengths-
super strength. non-original hybrids are stronger than werewolves, evolved werewolves, non-original vampires, and humans. because of their vampire side, they also get stronger with age. the full moon will boost their strength and so will intense feelings of anger.
super speed. a non-original hybrid's intensified quickness, agility, reflexes, and endurance makes them faster than any werewolf, evolved werewolf, non-original vampire, and human.
super agility. non-original hybrids possess superhuman agility. they can move, jump, climb, and run incredibly fast without difficulty or exhaustion.
super human senses. non-original hybrids have extremely keen senses of hearing, sight, touch, and smell that exceed those of non-original vampires, werewolves, evolved werewolves, and humans.
super durability. non-original hybrids can bear a lot of trauma.
enhanced healing. non-original hybrids have the combined healing capabilities of both non-original vampires and werewolves, rendering them practically invincible to anything but fatal wounds that can seriously impair their healing capabilities like decapitation or heart-extraction.
immortality. like non-original vampires, and original vampires, a non-original hybrid stops aging the moment they transition.
-weaknesses-
decapitation. dismembering or removing the head of a non-original hybrid will result in an instant death.
desiccation. being completely drained of blood or the heart stopping will cause a hybrid to desiccate due to their vampire side, losing most of it's strength and any ability to move. this process can be replicated artificially by magic.
heart extraction. removing a hybrid's heart will result in an instant death.
magic. hybrids are susceptible to the powers of witchcraft.
vervain. non-original hybrids are affected by vervain like their vampire counterparts.
wolfsbane. mon-original hybrids are affected by wolfsbane like werewolves. similar to vervain.
wood. wounding non-original hybrids with a wooden weapon such as wooden bullets will incapacitate for a shorter time than a vampire. stabbing them through the heart with a wooden stake will neutralize them but it won't kill them.

-strengths-
physical form. hellhounds have tremendous strength and speed.
hell. they can drag human souls to hell.
invisibility. hellhounds are invisible to humans until they are near death or they are looking through an object scorched with holy fire, such as glasses.
stability. it has been said that once a hellhound catches the scent of someone, they won't stop looking for them until they catch them.
-weaknesses-
salt, iron nails, explosives. hellhounds can be killed using salt, iron nails, and explosives.
salt. hellhounds can be kept at bay with salt.

well, humans are the weakest there are in the manor. the only reason that human patients are in briar is because they are literally insane.

-be in your room before lights go out, which is at ten pm. that's when hellhounds start roaming the asylum.

-do not smart off or be rude to the executive director. she'll choose your punishment if you do so.
-do not be rude to the staff.

(personality) brave. ever since marilyn has arrived at briar, she's been gaining new traits to her personality. her bravery is one of them. since she has been secretly learning how to control her powers and learning new spells, she's grown more confident when it comes to spell-casting. she had even considered staying out of her cell one night to try to escape, but quickly scratched that off of her list of to-do's when she heard the growls of the hellhounds in the hallways. her bravery has grown a ton ever since she has arrived.
kind. marilyn is an extremely kind and warm person. being nice to others was how she was taught. she helped out people that would get bullied most of the time before her parents shipped her to briar. here, she just lets it happen. it's a dog-eat-dog world in the manor, and she doesn't like being dragged in other people's drama. marilyn will usually greet a new patient when they arrive, but it's become quite rare for her.
slightly reserved. due to being betrayed by her parents and many of the friends she has had in the asylum, she tends to be reserved. marilyn never really tells anything about herself most of the time, and she prefers to keep it that way. she becomes mildly precautious when someone asks her about herself since there [i]are witch hunters in the asylum. that is another reason why she tends to keep to herself. you never really know who's listening.
fearful. over the past nine months of her arrival, marilyn has grown quite fearful of some of the patients and staff. she's extremely afraid of the hellhounds, which is why she's always sure to be in her room before the lights go out. she wouldn't be so afraid of them if she would be able to see them. if she were able to see them, she could easily use spells against them, but due to it being pitch black, she can't do a damn thing.
impatient. marilyn loses her patience rather quickly. she isn't the one you need to talk to about patience, because lord knows that she doesn't have it. if you take too long to answer a question, she may get a bit annoyed about it, but you'll rarely be able to tell.
short tempered. it doesn't take a lot to get this blonde fired up. it's a small part of the reason she's in briar. due to her short temper, her powers can go a bit out of wack, resulting in her being able to cast spells that requite a bit more strength than what she has. if she gets mad at you, you may want to stay away from her for a while. she'll most likely end up hurting you if you don't.
(history) marilyn had discovered her powers when she was nineteen; a couple of days after her birthday, to be exact. she had been living in her own apartment for a while, but she instantly went to her parents considering that they were nearly the only ones that she could trust in the small town she grew up in. of course, her parents told her that she was grown now, and that she needed to stop with the pranks. a few weeks later, the same thing happened again; she said certain words and then the remote to her television flew across the room.
this time, when marilyn went back to her parents, they simply told her that she could stay with them for a while until they figured all of this out. that was when they found briar. it was a week or two until two men arrived at their home to take marilyn to the asylum. her parents had told her that they would visit. she hasn't seen them since she was taken away.
