The midnight syndicate is a loose group of various mythicals, mutants, and supernatural beings from all walks of life united under the leadership of Raphael. He started the syndicate as a means of sheltering those who were unwanted, hunted, and hated. The group strives to create a place of relative peace and security in a world that doesn't want them. The group's goal rotates around offering a somewhat normal life to it's members, and trying to keep peace between them.
Currently, the syndicate occupies an abandoned hunting lodge in the mountains. It is approximately a 3 day drive from their former base in the small town of Whitney Creek. The nearest cities are Whitewater pass, the closest small town to the south, and Reindeer springs to the north, father up the mountain. Of the two, Reindeer springs is the larger city.
The syndicate main building is in an abandoned hunting lodge. The lodge is made out of a mixture of stone and wood panelling. The lodge is three stories total with a basement, and has three main sections: the center, and the two wings. On the first floor is the lodge's living section. It has the kitchen, several bathrooms, a large clinic with a doctor's office, the lodge's main office, and several storage closets and rooms. Two main doors leading in and out of the lodge are here - the large front door which opens to the road, and the smaller back door which opens to the forest.
The second floor has all the bedrooms of the lodge, of which it has nearly twenty five in total. Several have been converted into rooms for other purposes by Faye and Ahiah, including a library and an observatory, but most of the rooms in the east and west wing, 20 total, have been left undisturbed. The lodge also has a basement which contains most necessary appliances such as a large water heater and a wood-fired stove for heating the lodge. There is also spare furniture and supplies contained within the basement for an emergency, such as snowstorms.
The lodge itself is situated on a mountain shelf, on a large relatively open plain flanked by mostly woodland. There is a large lake fed by a waterfall to the west. The forest around the mountain is generally undisturbed by most human contact except for small, abandoned "draft dodger" cabins that can be found in the deepest parts of the woods. Animal life here includes wolves, bears, mountain lions, deer, mountain goat, and a variety of bird and insect life.
The mythos of the Midnight Syndicate universe is so convoluted that sometimes even the creator doesn't know what the hell is going on. In short, it's sort of like if Norse mythology slept with Catholicism and had a child together, with a fair amount of personal lore mixed in to keep it at least somewhat original. Individual religions also vary based on how and where an individual member was raised.
So here is roughly how these things fall: Heaven definitely exists, but god (Odin maybe?) has been missing a looooong time. Michael, the head angel of sorts, is set to take over when the end of the world happens. All the archangels are supposed to rule collectively but they got lazy and pretty much just let Michael do whatever. Heaven is constantly at war with Hell, for reasons that haven't really been explained. They are also at war with the Vanthori, also for reasons unexplained so far. Angels loving anyone or anything but angels is very forbidden and those breaking this rule are pay with their lives.
There are nine realms, whose names have rotated over the eons:
Heaven, realm of the angels.
Lihaime, home of the light elves.
Vanathori, home to the Vanthori beings.
Midrealm, including Earth and most of the mortal universe.
Amaria, a dark realm where the shadow people come from.
Musphellu, a realm of fire and the last pure dragons.
Sunderfei, the only realm to have open trade with the angels.
Utgardr, a land of rocky soil and dense forest.
Hell, where the demons live, sworn enemies of the angels.
Angels in training often take trips to the other dimensions. Diviners and warriors often slip into Vanathori to drink of a sacred well there, but the purpose for this and what happens after has been left a mystery.
Regular, everyday humans. The syndicate generally avoids human contact when possible to avoid arousing suspicion.
These are humans born with weird things that have no business being there, but are otherwise pretty human.
These are humans who were altered after birth, and generally usually have greater abilities or augments due to their alterations.
Example: Kreszentia, Sukab(?)
These are a mysterious people from Amaria. Little has been explained about them except that they can converse with and control shadows and also take on a shadow form. They are much stronger than humans.
These are humans who are born with the gift of magic. They generally take after an element: Fire, ice, shadow, blood, etc.
Examples: Aki, Theodore
Angels are heavenly creatures with wings and a special sort of magic with a wide range of abilities.
Examples: Anael, Michael
These are angels who have fallen to Earth. They lose much of their magic ability after falling but still retain things like augmented healing, aging immortality, and flight capability.
These are a special kind of fallen angel that occurs when an angel has their soul ripped out by a demon, and then plummets to Earth. They are blind and colorless, and usually die shortly after falling save certain special circumstances.
Saber cats are magical creatures that share a passing similarity to the smilodon of the megafaunal era but are much more intelligent. It is known they are very endangered and Faye may be the last of her kind.
These are mortals who were gifted an ability by the Vanthori. Their abilities can be many from being omnilingual to clairvoyance, but usually have to do with knowledge, foresight, and vitality.
Example: Jasper, Samael (Jasper's brother)
Humans who can take the shape of other beings, usually animals or mythical creatures.
The syndicate has many traditions, though many of them have not been performed in some time or have had to be skipped due to extenuating circumstances.
Ceremony of the Secondary
Normally this is a ceremony performed in private. The secondary comes to the primary's office after they have made the decision to accept the position. The primary (Raphael in this case) then gives the mark of the commander (a small black necklace) to the new secondary. There is usually a nice dinner later that evening to celebrate.
When this was last performed: A very long time ago, when Twilight was named secondary for the hot second she was here. Will probably be performed on Jasper soon.
Ceremony of the Doctor
This is another ceremony performed in quiet, usually with only all the healers as witnesses. The senior most healer who has shown the best traits is selected by Raphael to be the new doctor. They receive the doctor's key and badge. The healers celebrate among themselves and congratulate the new doctor.
When this was last performed: Many years ago when Tony became doctor after the last doctor, Elaina, retired.
This has only been performed a handful of times largely due to high mortality rate. The prospective member goes to the primary and states their reason for retiring. If the primary feels this reason is justified, the announcement is made at the next group mealtime. The retired member is cared for by the others in what is usually their last days.
When this was last performed: When Elaina retired after getting terminal breast cancer.
When a child hits nine years old, they may decide which role they want to apprentice for. At their tenth birthday, Raphael assigns the child a mentor who will then teach them how to be a member in the syndicate in their chosen role.
When this was last performed: Two decades ago when Tashi was a small girl, who apprenticed under the last "ghost".
When a baby is born, the entire syndicate will gather around the newborn, once the mother and child are both ready, to give congratulations. The primary will give a blessing to both the child and the new parent(s). While the mother is nursing, she is excused from all strenuous duties and allowed breaks to care for her baby.
When this was last performed: When David, the last baby, was born to the syndicate in 1978. There has been no children born in the syndicate since.
New Member Ceremony
When a new member is formally brought to the syndicate, at the next meal, the syndicate members will introduce themselves to the new member and the member will introduce themselves. After that, they will be made a member until Raphael determines they are ready to take on a role. Generally the new member will then go to the healers to be evaluated and vaccinated for safety reasons.
When this was last performed: When Caimus was brought to the syndicate, though he ended up crying before he could even say his name and it was cut short.
When a member wants to train for another role (healer, guard, etc.), they may approach the primary and ask to be assigned that role. If the primary thinks the member is fit for the role, he will call in a mentor who will train them in the new role.
When this was last performed: When Kreszentia chose to be a healer and trained under Tony.
When a mentor believes their apprentice is ready to graduate to a full member of their role, they will approach the primary and ask that their apprentice be given full status and give their reasons why. If the primary feels the apprentice is ready, he will call them and grant them full status. The members of that role will celebrate among themselves and welcome the apprentice as a full member into their ranks.
When this was last performed: When Kreszentia graduated from apprentice to healer, thanks to tireless training by Tony and her former experience.
When a member of the syndicate dies, a pyre is build and their body will be burnt. Any treasured possessions will be burnt with them along with one of Raphael's flight feathers, to grant them swift flight to heaven. If there is no body left, their most prized possession will usually be burnt in it's stead.
When this was last performed: When Elaina died due to her breast cancer. She was burnt with her stethoscope and pictures of her former family. This ceremony will also likely be performed for Tashi soon.
Leader of the syndicate and makes all major decisions and assigns others to roles.
Raphael, roleplayed by MiladyRadium
Second-in-command and advises the leader as well as helping strategies and making sure orders are carried out. Also takes over if the leader dies.
Jasper (?), roleplayed by Knox
The Doctor is the leader of the healers and represents their interests in leadership manners. This is a merit-based position and usually the senior-most healer is chosen to fill this role if the last doctor is killed or retires.
Tony, roleplayed by MiladyRadium
The Ghost (Retired)
The ghost was a special role filled by Tashi Ueno until her recent demise. Her job was to keep an eye on the town and report any problems to Raphael.

Guards well, guard the syndicate. They do patrols as well as sometimes using magic to set up barriers or wards to protect the syndicate.
Healers are medically talented individuals and tend to wounds both mental and physical. They are under the leadership of the doctor.
Members make up the bulk of the syndicate's membership and are where people who do not fit into the above ranks are placed. New members also fit here.

ALLIES AND ENEMIES
Any group not listed
The morning, like most spring mornings in Whitney Creek, was dreary and cold. The dark clouds above meant rain would likely come later. Like usual, Raphael was up at his usual 5 o' clock in the morning. It wasn't his choice to really wake up so early, it was his own paranoia that drove him up at such ungodly hours. But he could at least enjoy a little bit of quiet, and take some time to sit down and preen his feathers, which was really the only normal part of his morning rituals.
Mutation, anxiety, and paranoia did funny things to Kreszentia's sleep cycle. As such she only slept... oh, maybe once or twice a week? Luckily, her being a mutant protected her from really feeling the effects of it, so while it probably wasn't healthy for her mental state, she was left no worse for wear physically. Usually, long nights studying something or another under her microscope leaked into mornings of cataloging her findings and helping Tony get the clinic ready for the day. And then it was another long shift of tending to the many wounds the members seemed to acquire. Rinse, and repeat.
