  • When his mentor wasn't looking Airpaw's tail fell, his posture caving in. Airpaw didn't like fighting, he was a hunter. A small apprentice, not built to slash at one with his claws. A soft-hearted fool was what Airpaw was, he was fine with hunting so long as he didn't hurt the birds, he could endure the taunts and teases of his peers as he cowered in a corner. But fight? Stand up and unsheath his claws? that was something that was beyond Airpaw's capabilities. He could not fight, he was useless in a battle, small, not strong, with barely any meat on his bones. Airpaw hated fighting.

  • It wasn't long before the two reached a place that Searingflame deemed worthy as their training grounds."You ready?" he asked his apprentice, who seemed to have lost his enthusiasm he had earlier."I'll be doing the moves, then you just have to copy them."

  • Airpaw nodded, "Allright." he said unenthusiasticly and stood alert, watching his mentor intently.

  • Searingflame dashed forward in a moment, his paw outwards, about to strike. But it was a trick. The tom turned at the last moment, going by Airpaw's side and tapping his paw."Nothing much. Just a way to knock over your enemy. Ready to try it?"

  • Airpaw pursed his lips. Nothing much!? he thought sourly, Nothing much?! But Airpaw only nodded in reply, taking a position, he ran forward quickly, leapt, his paws streching out. But as he turned he fell, tripping over his own paws.

  • Searingflame stared down at him, blinking."You okay?" he asked him, adding,"Don't worry, we'll keep doing this as many times as you need to get it!"

  • Airpaw untangled his paws from each other and stood up, shaking dust from his fur. Oh great, what a reliefe. he thought sourly. But only said, "Okay, I need to get this right if I'm ever to be a warrior." Airpaw cursed his inability to say anything negative. He tried again, but failed to veer at the right moment, and ended up skidding to a halt several feet away.

  • "Try putting more weight into your left paws when you're slipping around me, then you won't go in the other direction." Searingflame told him somewhat patiently. He was eager to get to more moves, but he could wait.

  • Airpaw blinked, and noddes silently, his eyes following a sparrow on its flight in the sky. He drew his attention away and resumed his starting position, considering what his mentor had said. He closed his eyes for a breif moment, picturing in his mind a sparrow. The way it flew in a straight line, he then put a sparrow hawk by the sparrows left wing and watching in it's mind how it pivoted and turned, changing directions instintaniously. Airpaw opened his eyes, Let's roll. Darting forward, his paw steps sure, he knew how to do it now. And as he pivoted, leaning his weight on his left paws, it felt right. He slid past his mentor, his pelt just barely touching Searingflame's as he slid past. He stopped in his tracks, manuevered around to face his mentor, a smile lighting his face.

  • "Much better, well done Airpaw!" Searingflame congratulated the apprentice."One or two more moves and we can finish for the day."

  • Airpaw smiled at his mentor, this was much better than his accomplishment. "Allright Searingflame." he said, a bit on enthusiasm bordering on the edge of his vocie.

  • Searingflame nodded, shooting forward once again."This is a better tecnique for bigger enemies." He went downwards for the attack, stetching out his paw and tapping Airpaw's stomach."You would be able to get a good slash in there if this worked."

  • Airpaw's eyes shot wide as his mentor's unexpected move. He positioned himself and tried to copy it. But his shooting forward was slow and his paws clumsy as he missed teh tap at his mentor's stomach. Standing up straight he frowned, and recalled hwo his mentor had moved. "I don't get it." he said, "You went to fast." he said with a frown.

  • Searingflame nodded and moved forward, the only difference being him doing it at a slower pace. After he was finished, the tom stood back, nodding to Airpaw."Get it now?"

  • Airpaw nodded, "Yes... I think I understand now." he said. Airpaw attempted another try and copying his mentor. Yet he tripped as he came downwards to tap his mentor's stomach, the paw he was going to "Strike" with got folded under him as he streched it out to tap his mentor, and it went downhill from there. Growling he stood up, "So close!" he said, dissapointement heavy on his heart,

  • Searingflame didn't really think he'd get it down in the first try. This wasn't stuff you could just pick up from watching after all, you needed experience."You know the drill, go ahead and try again, Airpaw."

  • Airpaw sighed and disentangled himself once again from his own legs. He returned to the first position, and paused thinking. If I could just get my limbs under controll. Get every thing coordinated, know my limits. I could do this. he thought detirmined to get it right. Unfortunatly, Airpaw was out of creative bird idea's to help him get enerything in sync. Going through the mostions once more, he squarly missed his target, yet he managed not to get tripped up in on his own paws. He stood up, and shook himself off, without another word of complaint he came back around to his starting position and got ready to try again.

  • Searingflame nodded, glad at Airpaw's determination."We have as much time as you need." They'd probably have to go back to camp just after this actually, but there was plenty of time to learn, he supposed.

  • Airpaw screwed up the next pass as well. Growing impatient with himself he went back to teh starting point and clenched his jaw. He imagined himself looking into a fox's eyes, the dead crow down by its feet, along with other variouse peices of food for it. Airpaw imagined his mentor as the fox, the fox that had murmered the corw. His eyes blazed and he darted smoothly forward sliding evenly downards and tapping his mentors stomach on the way by. Rolling away and into a standing position he blinked. And then a smile spread across his muzzle like the warm kiss of the sun as it touched the land at dawn."I did it!"

  • "Very good!" Searingflame purred, nodding his acknowledgement."We can get back to camp now, if you'd like. Or we can do some hunting first."
