Airpaw obeyed and trotted off, until he caught the scent of (vole?) where he dropped into a crouch and stalked forward, squarely missing the prey he had been so confident to catch. Airpaw pouted, but moved forward to find something else.

Searingflame ducked low, tracing a scent of rabbit. Airpaw might not have been big enough to catch one, but he sure was. He twitched his tail in concentration, his eyes locked on the creature jumping around not far from him. It was only a moment later of light padding on the tom's behalf though before he was able to pounce on the prey and bring it down, neck crushed beneath his paws."Got it!" he purred victoriously.
-
Airpaw sniffed the air and caught the scent of a mouse, skiping forward gleefully he spotted it, and dropped into his well practiced crouch, wiggeling his haunches in anticapation he leapt forward scopping the mouse up and tossing it in the air, then catching it in his mouth and killing it. His jaw dropped, the mouse falling in the dirt beneath his paws as Airpaw gaped at a hawk, soaring high overhead, circling him.
-
Searingflame picked up the prey in his teeth, the tom padding off after his apprentice to see how he was progressing. It wasn't suprising when he found him staring up at a bird...hm. Was it the bird he didn't like killing though, maybe not just the prey? How weird."Nice job catching that mouse." he spoke, putting his own rabbit down at his paws.
-
"Uh-huh." he mumbled, gaping in awe. "She's so beautiful Searingflame. She's hunting, and she just gorguse." he told his mentor as he stared up at the hawk in amazement.
-
Searingflame tilted his head in confusion."Beautiful? Who? A she-cat?"
-
"No." Airpaw mumered, shaking his head. "The she-cats dull compared to her." he mewed, pointing with his tail to the hawk over head.
-
Searingflame glanced up at where the apprentice was pointing his tail. Was that...a bird? That was what had caugth his attention? "A bird?" he voiced his thoughts in a dull tone of voice.
-
Airpaw's ears laid flat, "No, not a bird! A hawk. She's magnificent." Airpaw breathed the word magnificent. Airpaw's ears swiveled forward as the hawk screeched, a wild grin enveloped his muzzle and he nodded to himself as the feathered beast swooped down with a scream of triumph and came up with a rabbit held in it's talons.
-
"That could have been our prey." Searingflame murmured quietly as he watched the hawk take away its prey. Louder, he meowed,"Okay, great. We're hunting now though, so come on. It's our turn to get some prey."
-
No, she needed it for her chicks. She needed it more, her mate died. Airpaw thought, but he kept that to himself. "Allright, are we splitting up again, or hunting in a pair?" he asked with a smile to his mentor.
-
"This time we'll hunt in a pair. I'd like to see your progress so far." Searingflame answered, padding away from the direction of the hawk.
-
Airpaw followed his mentor, scenting the air as he went along, he stopped scenting a rabbit, flicking his tail to alert his mentor that he had something, he padded into the tall grasses, and spotted the rabbit quickly, it was a small one, and Airpaw figured he could manage it. H remembered the hawk, how it had swooped down... Airpaw tried to mimick that swoop by springing into the air, and landing squarly ontop of the rabbit with his front paws, quickly breaking it's spine. He smiled gleefully, doing a little victory dance, The hawks can teach me how to hunt properly!! he thought, his eyes bright. He smiled victoriously, his first rabbit!
-
"Well done." Searingflame congratulated his apprentice, looking at him strangely as he did his little dance. It wasn't the exact moves he'd taught him, but he was sure he'd seen them not too long ago. Assuming that he'd seen another ThunderClanner do it, the tom didn't mention it.
-
Airpaw picked it up and brought it over, he dug a whole and buried, trying to remember what else the bird had done. It had scooped up it's prey, as it levled off from it's dive, rising high into the air with it... His face lit up, he knew how to do that! Smiling at his mentor he murmered, "Thanks." and scented the air, finding a mouse on the winds he stalked towards it, as he did so, he thought of what he would do to it, crouching, he poised to run, and then sprinted for it trying to get his paw in the right position... the mouse sat bolt upright and darted away as it saw him. Airpaw slowed to a halt and pouted after the mouse.
-
"Bad luck." Searingflame murmured. He was happy at Airpaw's enthusiasm, he was a good hunter despite his strange way of doing it.
-
With a sigh, he nodded in agreement, "I suppose I can't catch them all." he said, looking up at his mentor. Airpaw decided he liked Searingflame best of all of his mentors, despite his ignorance of the lives of the birds. Airpaw decided he would do his best to keep this mentor, with a smile, he looked up at Searingflame. "But soon enough I'll catch more than the other apprentices!" he bragged, his enthusiasm recovered.
-
Searingflame couldn't hold back a chuckle at his words. Just as Airpaw had taken a sudden liking to him, the tom was the same. He wasn't too sure about his strange liking of birds, but hey, everyone had a strange part about them. Or at least, everyone he knew did.
-
Airpaw looked at the position of the sun, his eyes widened as he realized they had been out hunting for a very long time, the recognition made him notice his aching paws. But Airpaw refused to let it show, he had to be strong for Searingflame, he had to be strong for his clan. Standing straight he smiled at his mentor, "What are we doing next?" he asked.
-
Searingflame looked thoughtful for a moment before answering."We can either head back or check the borders over. I'll let you decide."
