  • Airpaw padded to the spot where he and his mentor were supposed to meet, but his gaze was on a Raven, soaring gracefully in the sky, and he tripped and fell. Thankfully, they were supposed to meet quite a ways away from the gorge, so he wasn't in any real danger. Grumbling to himself he padded to their meeting spot, and returned his gaze tot the Raven soaring high in the sky.

  • Searingflame was already there, waiting for his new apprentice, his paws shuffling nervously. He'd just become a warrior not even a moon ago, and he'd already been assigned an apprentice, to add to the fact that he still hadn't got past the death of his own mentor, or father, no matter how bad he had been to him.

No, bad thoughts. He had an apprentice, he should be happy! This could help him recover anyway, maybe this was just the perfect thing for him to get his mind off of it."Hey there! Airpaw, right?" The apprentice didn't seem to bad, but then again, he'd only just met him. He knew you couldn't judge cats by appearances.

  • Airpaw's head snapped audibly as he flipped his head around post haste to his mentor. Searingflame looked a bit nervouse, Airpaw didn't care though, just as long as he could keep the birds alive. "Yeah. You're Searingflame, my mentor I suppose?" he mewed, his mind continuing to drift as he listened with half and ear. Airpaw had switched many mentors, none of them being able to stand his short attention span. Maybe this one would be different.

  • Searingflame nodded his head a the question, looking at Airpaw curiously, who seemed totally out of it."That's right. Are you ready to start learning?" What could they do first...

  • Airpaw flicked his gaze to his mentor, he shrugged while at the same time saying, "Sure, I'm ready." and watched an insect take flight.

  • Searingflame nodded."Then let's go, we're going to learn picking moss for the elders first, alright?" Not the most entertaining task, but it had to be done.

  • Airpaw's attention snapped into focus, his mouth fell open and his eyes widened. B-but! I havn't been taught anything by any of my mentors and I'm a moon into my apprenticeship. And we're picking moss?!?!" he spluttered.

  • Searingflame nodded, ignoring his tone of shock."We have plenty of time to learn other things. Moss picking is an apprentice job, and it's something every cat needs to learn, like it or not." He knew he'd hated it as an apprentice, but the elders needed someone to do it for them.

  • Maybe I could jump the gorge and go be a Riverclan apprentice instead... He thought glaring at the ground.

  • "Well, let's get going!" Searingflame smiled, padding in the direction of the stones he knew grew plenty of moss, not that those weren't everywhere, but it was where he preferred to go.

  • Airpaw dragged his paws audibly against the ground as he padded slowly after Searingflame, Maybe I could fly away... he thought. Be a loner. I dunno, a bird. Maybe I should be a bird." he added thoughtfully. And then he imagined himself diving over the gorge, and wings srouting from his back, he unfolded the massive feathery things and with a graceful pump he rose higher and higher...

Airpaw woke from his day dream to find himself leaping from Rock to rock and flapping his legs like a bird might.

  • Searingflame gave him a strange look."Having fun, are you?" he asked, a spark of humor in his eyes. He paused at a set of stones, green with the moss they were there to collect."Alright, come over here. I'm going to show you how it's done."

  • Airpaw froze, blenced on three legs as he had just been about to leap, his eyes were wide, and then Searingflame went to the moss. Leaping hastily down from the boulder he had been on he scampered over quickly as if running from the embarresment.

  • Searingflame flicked his tail, ignoring the embarrased look Airpaw wore. "You just curve your claws around the moss," he explained, unsheathing his claws and gently bringing it under a pile."Just be sure not to get any dirt from the rock in it, so you have to bring it off without touching the rock." It was weird to explain it, and he wasn't sure he was doing it right. Oh well, he had to try.

  • Airpaw carefully followed his mentores instructions, but his claw just ripped right through the moss. Taking all of his claws, he then tried it again, and when he had hooked in in several different places with each claw the apprentice fist tugged up to losen the mottem mosses hold, and then down to loosen the top, and then he tore it quickly away. Smiling in triumph he dangled the layer of moss from his claws. "Ha!" he cried, looked back, and saw his two inch segment was only a rough square of the whole rock. His smile fell, and he glowered at the rocks for being so big.

  • Sighing, Airpaw nodded, and carefully scooped his claws under the soft moss, he carefully dragged it out, but once again his paw cut throught the moss. Getting an idea, he did the same, but began to purposly cut, making a large square of slices, he then balanced on his back paws and grabbed the two top forners of the cut-out square he made and carefully pulled off the whole segment. "Yay! Is this good?" he said dangeling his moss from one claw.

  • Searingflame nodded."Sure, well done." he answered."Now let's get back to camp. I'll show you how to change the bedding." He began back to camp, flicking his tail to signal to his apprentice to follow.

  • His tail dropped as his triumph was extinguished. Picking up the moss he reluctantly followed his mentor, grumbling intelligable words around the moss.

  • Searingflame pricked his ears at the grumbles Airpaw spoke, trying to make some of it. Finding he couldn't, he shrugged, and made his way back to camp. The tabby went to the elders' den immediately, dropping the moss inside."Alright, have you been taught how to change bedding yet, or do you want me to show you?" he asked Airpaw.
