The air was warm today, with the faintest whiff of wind. When those two atmospheric phenomena occurred together, it made the perfect flying conditions for a soaring bird, or rather in this case, a flying dragon. Her scales felt warmed by the thermals that pressed her wings higher into the air, stretching the flesh and scales taut as they caught the wind. With her legs tucked tight against her body, she could feel her the wind flowing along her streamlined form, over her sleek face, barely catching the rows of interlaced scales that protected her skin. Yes, these conditions were perfect for leisurely flying, but they were even better for speed, and if she was going to make her mentor proud, she would have to be quick.
Her golden eyes skimmed the ground below as she pondered the best places to find what she needed. The easiest place to find a robin feather was undoubtedly a robin, considering that happening across a robin nest was unlikely at best, and fruitless at worst. Luckily, robins had distinctive red feathers across their chest that made them easy to spot from a distance, and they were particularly active in the early spring, when they were just beginning to weave their nests together for their eggs. Gliding lower toward the treetops, she eyed each bird that took notice of her, knowing that they were rarely afraid of dragons. After all, a robin was barely a mouthful for a young dragon, much less an adult. Her breath caught as she spotted the bright feathers vanishing beneath the thin layer of leaves that covered the mostly bare branches.
Flaring her wings to change direction, Braenix flung herself after it, folding her wings back into fins like a rocket to navigate the tight space. The small brown bird was weaving a thin branch into a small bowl in front of it, ignoring her completely until she neared its nest, and it took off with a terrified squawk of alarm. The dragon let the bird go, knowing that near a robin's nest, there were likely to be feathers littering the ground. She landed more heavily than she meant to because of her speed, trotting to a stop once her feet touched the ground. Sniffing the earth, she eyed the dirt below the nest until a ragged brown feather caught her attention. It was a shed feather from the winter molt, no doubt. Unbuttoning and lifting the flap of the small pouch around her leg, she carefully dropped the feather inside and buttoned it again with careful claws.
Now, a geode would be harder to find, but if there was anywhere it was likely to be, it was the sandstone quarry upriver. There were all kinds of stones there, and she knew that The Anathema lived in a valley thick with crystals. Breaking tree cover with a few powerful strokes of her wings, the dragon swerved back toward the river and kept her eyes open for the telltale glitter of a geode. It took only a few minutes of flying to arrive at her destination, and before she had even landed, she had located a cracked stone near the river's edge with dark blue crystals growing in its heart. The deep azure reminded Braenix of her sister's scales, but she pushed the thought away. She needed to finish this first, before her sister got back. With that thought, she put the geode with the feather and closed the pouch tightly.
The last object was the easiest to find, but the furthest distance to fly. Turning away from the quarry, she took to the air again, her wings growing tired with the speed and distance she was flying for this little trip. The blueberry thicket was near the end of the valley, where the river sloped down in a series of rapids that swerved around a network of stones. The blueberries grew in the gaps between the stones, making landing impossible without getting tangled. She would just have to pull off a branch while flying, she supposed.
The mist of the river drove the thermals away from her path, making Braenix's wings ache with the strain of flying the hard way instead of soaring. Still, she persevered, finally spotting the dots of green up ahead, where the valley narrowed down and rose in elevation. Sighing in relief at reaching her destination, the young dragon picked a widely spread bush near a kink in the river and flapped in close. Snapping the branch off with her teeth, she held it tightly in her claws as she heaved herself higher in the air to glide down in the direction of camp.
Triumph glowed in her chest as she neared camp. She had done it. She found all of the items. Now to get them back to Azreal.
