[color=white]"Keep it from Jesse huh? Why..?"

It was like somebody punched her in the throat. "Jesse!" Annie straightened up off of the tree, her mind already reeling for an explanation that would excuse her shady greeting. "I really did not mean for you to hear that." She cringed at her own words. Not exactly what she would consider an "award-worthy" excuse. "It's just- Where's Darren?"

A brief moment of silence. Oh, God. Talk about digging her own grave. She brushed a hand over the top of her hair while her other hand fell to her hip. "Jesse, seriously. I'm not-"

"Uh. Huh!? Annie? Annie! It's Darren now..I promise."

She upturned her face to the darkening sky. "You're a little late. Your brother's probably gonna kill me, just so you know," came her exasperated reply. Still, hearing his voice was the breath of fresh air to alleviate the choking sensation she'd gotten when she heard Jesse's voice on the other end of the receiver.

"Are you busy? I kinda have a bit of a favor to ask you."

She was probably right, the way Jesse said his words. But I wondered what it could possibly be that she needed me specifically for? And now I had to keep it from a nagging Jesse even further.

"No. I'm not busy, what is it?" I asked softly, glancing behind me to make sure my brother wasn't there. He wasn't, maybe he was in his room sulking. Slowly, I began to walk back towards the house.

"And I'll try to keep it away from Jesse further." I tried to sound assuring, I wanted to appear open and available. She had called me for help, not Jesse. Something about that statement made my heart skip. At this moment, I'd be happy to do anything for Annie.

[color=white] "You have no clue how much I hate asking you this."

She enfolded her free arm across her chest and lowered her eyes to the flattened, dead grass at her feet. She felt the presence of the people around her with uncomfortable intensity. They moved to the pace of their busy little schedules, oblivious to the predator looming on the outskirts; she who masqueraded as a crimeless teenage girl.

"It's almost like I'm... God. It's like I'm hitting you up for drugs or something. But if it wasn't important, I wouldn't be asking. I wasn't thinking before I left the house... And I forgot to bring any blood with me." Without giving him the chance to wiggle in so much as a breath, she hastily continued. "I can't bite anyone, Darren. If I let myself do that, I'm worried..." That I might lose control? Give in? Kill again?

"that I might not be able to stop," she concluded at last.

Annie pursed her lips. As much as she hated for Jesse to not just think, but to know for certain that she was keeping something from him, she couldn't have him tagging along with Darren. It was for everybody's good that he not be given the opportunity to harass Maddie. She was still healing, and for Jesse to show up, urging her to hand over that damn ascendant... She couldn't risk her relationship with Maddie like that.

"I would have asked Jesse to bring me some, but he still wants the ascendant from Maddie, and she's only just starting to get used to me again... I think. Okay, more like I hope, but you get why I can't have him coming out here, right?" Her voice was more a plea for agreement than an actual question; she wanted his clarification that she was doing what was right.

'It's almost like I'm... God. It's like I'm hitting you up for drugs or something.'

At that, I knew it was bad. Well not terrible, just it involved blood and that made me nervous. "Oh-" Before I could speak, she went on the defensive side. 'I can't bite anyone, Darren. If I let myself do that, I'm worried..'

Right, so she was afraid. This was why I offered her animal blood in the first place! Now it was too late, but she just had to follow Jesse. This was exactly what I was trying to avoid, and I told Jesse that!

"You might not be able to stop." We had said that in unison, and to be honest, it made me smile bashfully at the wooden floor below my feet. Already I unterstood why Jesse couldn't be involved, Maddie was with her. Plus, it would the perfect chance to harass Annie.

And if on the topic of blood, matters would only be worse. "Right right. I get it. Where will you be exactly?"
I had been to Whitmore before, on my quest to become a doctor before that ultimately failed.
"Just give me one hour. I'll be there."

Before I hung up, I had to bite my tongue from saying 'I love you.' Yeesh that would've been detrimental. I stared at the kitchen entryway, my eyes finding the black mini fridge instantly. Jesse was nowhere to be found...

This may be harder than it seems.

[color=white]Annie almost couldn't believe her own ears. True, she had expected his answer, but hearing the confirmation straight out of his mouth was just what she needed to alleviate the greater chunk of her anxieties.

"Have I ever told you that you're my hero?" Pushing herself once more off the side of the tree, Annie started migrating back towards the trail.

"In an hour, my guess is that we'll still be at the theater. We're trying to kill a bit of time since the office isn't open until tomorrow evening." She snorted and shook her head. "This place apparently has outrageous hours, even for a college. But, uh. The theater. Maddie said it's somewhere on campus, so it shouldn't be too hard for you to find. Just text me when you get here." She would leave her phone on vibrate.

Without even thinking about it, she found herself strolling along in the direction Maddie, Kelly, and Lily had gone. She stuffed her free hand down into her back pocket. She met Darren's parting words with an unexpected smile. "An hour?" she echoed, plainly skeptical.

Giving a short laugh, she paused as she found herself approaching a crosswalk. On the opposite side of the road, businesses lined every available space of a tidy little strip mall, and it all seemed to center around an enormous, flickering, firetruck red sign hovering above it all. "Whitmore Cinema". Bingo.

"It probably took us, like, two to get here. Drive carefully, huh?"

No reply. She looked down to find that the call had ended. She wasn't too concerned. After all, she'd never known Darren to be a reckless driver.

Still, with the call gone dead, Annie was left to surrender to the lonely noises of the night. The gentle buzz of traffic lights; the revving of car engines; distant laughter and the grating songs of early crickets.

Suddenly, she wished Darren had stayed on the phone with her. At least until she'd gotten to the theater, where she would have more stimulating noises to occupy the empty places in her head where darker thoughts might creep through. She frowned down at the blank screen of her phone, contemplating for a moment whether or not to redial his number and make him talk to her.

She privately scolded herself. Don't be childish. You can actually see the theater from here.

Even so, that uncanny sense of loneliness remained even as she slipped her phone back into her pocket and trudged past the crosswalk to the other side of the road.

"Four tickets to Divergent please!" Lily said sweetly, her elbows resting on the counter of the booth.

    "The six o'clock show?"

    "That'd be it."

"Alright, theater isn't open for seating yet but here you go." Lily was handed the tickets, she took them with a smile, reading over them as she walked our way. The paper was thin, like a receipt, and they flopped in the small breeze from her walking. "Hope Annie's okay." I said, sitting at a small table with Maddie.

The witch didn't look as concerned as me, in fact, she was the one who began walking away after Annie declared she had to make a phone call! But what really got me thinking was the fact that she was calling Darren. It made me wonder if it had anything to do with blood..

But surely she'd call Jesse for that? Lily slid into the chair beside me, leaving an empty one beside Maddie. "He said the theater isn't open for seating yet, guess'll we'll have to wait."

Lily's enthusiasm for this movie made me grin. It was a good thing too, this whole ordeal was! Just us girls, sitting calmly with no worries. Except, two of us were vampires who had to deal with an ever appending bloodlust. But for now, I felt fine, having suppressed it to a point.

[color=white]Once Annie approached the theater, tracking down her small posse was a breeze. Perched on the curb, she caught sight of movement out of the corner of her vision, and almost immediately thereafter caught wind of her younger sister's voice: a sound that, even now, she fought to adjust to.

With her hands shoved into the back pockets of her jeans, an unusual habit she recently seemed to have picked up on, she trailed them over to a table on the outside of the building.

Coming up from behind Lily and Kelly, she raised her eyebrows in greeting. "And I'm back. What did I miss?" She pulled the chair beside Maddie out from under the table and sunk down into it as if she had been waiting her entire life to do so. Folding her hands on the table in front of her, she let a long breath hiss from her lips.

"Sorry about that. I just wanted to make sure everything is, you know, smooth sailing back at the house. You guys know how things can get." If she wasn't already teeming with anxiety at the thought of having Darren deliver her blood in secrecy, she might have reprimanded herself more for being such a competent liar. This was one that she let slide. After all, a person could only beat themselves up so much in one day.

Speaking of which, it was probably in her best interest that she call Jesse at some point. It was probably better that she didn't leave their earlier snippet of a conversation unexplained. Just guessing at what he probably thought when he'd heard her on the phone was enough to make her stomach churn with guilt. Granted, it would probably have to be wait until they were back at the apartment and she could borrow somebody's charger.

A battery life could only last so long, and hers had more than exceeded what she'd expected out of it.

"Sup Annie." I greeted, picking at the corner of the movie ticket. "So? Is everything going well?" Maddie inquired, finally lifting her head at Annie's arrival. Kelly nodded as well, curious about things back at home.

Home. Not that I didn't want to return. But something about leaving this awesome town brought a frown to my face. It was like a vacation! Small, short, but away from the hardships of being home. However, I was also curious about Jesse and Darren.

Whenever Annie left the house, it was always me and at least one of the brothers...now, they were on their own.

Funny, since they were on their own ten years ago. "How long is this movie?"

"A little longer than two hours." Maddie replied cheerfully, "So we'll be out by, eight?"

"Eight-nineteen, most likely." Kelly pitched in, my face glowed. I looked to my sister with a wide grin, but my eyes went straight past her head. A digital sign was buzzing, showing everyone that, Divergent, was now seating. "Let's go, Let's go!"

[color=white]Annie willed what she hoped was a convincing enough smile. "It sounds to me like things are... Y'know, going pretty smooth." She hadn't thought to ask how things were going, but this was Jesse and Darren she was thinking about. They fared about as well together as cats and dogs. Whether she was there or not couldn't have made much of a difference.

Her eyes fell furtively to her lap as she listened to the ongoing conversation. The movie was around two hours long, which, according to his own prediction, meant that Darren had more than enough time to get there, deliver the blood, and to leave.

Annie's eyes shot up at Lily's trill of excitement. She glanced over her shoulder for the source of her sister's delight, and immediately came to understand.

Stretching her arms in the air as if she had been sitting there for an entire hour instead of one or two minutes, Annie cracked a sportive grin. "You know we have to whisper in a theater, right? Inside voices only," she teased, rising to her feet.

    Dammit. Dammit. Dammit.

That man's office doesn't open until 7 p.m. tomorrow. Which meant I had to wait longer. It wasn't that much of a big deal anyway, if I really wanted to, I could just break in.

But that wouldn't be much fun, and neither would drawing attention. This was about stealth, get in, get out before anyone notices. Then again, this was a witch I was messing with, I needed to watch my words..

Oh well, taking advantage of Joseph's time will just have to do. He seemed excited about seeing me at six, so why not huh? It was only for a day...in a half. I sucked any remains from my thumb, making my way back over to the office building parking lot. He had dropped me off here, and if my memory serves me right, I told him I'll be here when the time came.

"Six on the dot." I murmured, standing next to an oak tree and bench. Behind me the sun was beginning to set, that didn't mean this town was slowing down however. Busy kids still bustled around, now either going home or heading to meet with their friends. My arms crossed, and my eyes became stoic and low.

Maybe it was the eye shadow that made them look so cold. But green irises went so well with a black background, I thought it fit perfectly. Pretty much I appeared the 'hard to approach' type. Standing there with an ankle crossed over the over, and waiting.

Joseph's Stellar Structure class went by at the same spirit-sapping pace as always.

It wasn't the class itself that he spited. In fact, had it not been for the consistently monotonous voice of the professor, it might have been one of his favorite classes. He found it mind-blowing, the coincidental manner in which planets and stars came to be; how, with the interaction of a few measly hydrogen and helium molecules, a star could begin its infantile stages of growth.

It was unimaginably fascinating to him... Just not when he had to absorb it straight from the lips of an indifferent professor.

He was still trying to collect his thoughts, sluggish from his previous lecture, when the administration building came into view. He tossed the composition notebooks piled in his passenger seat into the backseat and scanned the area for Vanessa. According to the neon digits on his car clock, it was 6:02, so if she wasn't there now, she would be soon.

Even blanketed in the massive shadow of the oak tree beneath which she waited, she was hard to miss; her luminous red hair made sure of that. It must have been a real nuisance to have such bright, conspicuous hair when there were a good hundred or so bounties hanging over her head. But surely she would have dyed it by now, or invested in a wig, if she minded it.

He pulled up to the curb next to her, rolling down his window as he did so. "Sorry I'm late," he greeted, propping an arm up on the door. As he recalled their early parting, he couldn't help the cheeky smile that weaseled its way across his features.

"Traffic can be a real pain in the ass around here. Especially right about now, when everybody's starting to head out to clubs and parties."

I soo wanna see it! We're actually going this Wednesday and I literally CANNOT WAIT.-

I had gotten lost in space. The college nightlife huh? The mornings were filled with busy young adults, and the smell of coffee. Whereas the evening brings in refreshed, ready to party looking people.

An unrecognizable car pulled up in front of me. The window rolled down, revealing a good looking Joseph sitting back rather comfortably. I appeared uninterested at first..but his cheeky grin brought a smirk to my face.

"Clubs and parties? Ooh, let's go." I chuckled, my arms unfolded as I approached the car. I stopped by the passenger side, opening the door and sliding in smoothly. "How was class?"

Four hours went by fast, but it wasn't wasteful. I got a lot accomplished I say! After buckling in my seatbelt, I sat back in a smile; my right hand instantly going up to twirl a crimson loc.

Joseph wasn't sure how or why any of this was happening to him, but he certainly wasn't going to protest. Vanessa was an enigma, and the question of what she saw in him was another one. Perhaps the only reason she was indulging him yet again was to vet him out; ensure that he wouldn't spill the beans about vampires. As if he would ever be taken seriously by the scientific community again if he tried... Not that he would, even if he knew for certain that his claims would have had some thought put into them.

Whatever the reason that she stuck around, he was grateful for her presence. Her emphatic and forthright disposition made for enthralling company. She certainly managed to keep him on his toes.

Once he made sure she was safely situated in the adjacent seat, he pulled from the lot and accelerated down the road. It was only when he hit forty-five miles per hour that he spoke in reply to her prior inquiry.

[b]"Is 'deadening' an acceptable answer? 'Cause that's what I'm going with." He shook his head, laughing through his nose. "I don't think the professor's voice has changed pitch a day in his life, poor guy."

It was when he came upon the familiar stop sign that turned into the parking lot of his dormitory that it occurred to him just what he was doing. Assured in the knowledge that nobody was pulling in behind him, he took a moment to stop and look over at Vanessa.

"You really wanna go out tonight?" He asked, raising his eyebrows. In a unbuttoned, maroon shirt, pulled on at last second over a wrinkled black t-shirt, he wasn't exactly dressed to impress... Then again, he seldom was.

"I know of a few parties we could crash, but clubs are kinda a different story. I'm sure we could get into one... If you're willing to wait around in line for two or three hours."

"It's acceptable in my book." I propped an elbow up on the arm of the door, listening to his talk on the professor. Boring professor, equals boring class. Joseph must be really interested in this, I don't think I could stand sitting in class..listening to some middle-aged guy talk....

    about stars!

For the majority of the ride, it was quiet. I didn't glance at Joseph much, but I had the feeling he was thinking. No, I sensed it. His little mind was working to try and figure me out...all the while, he let's me into his space. Into his life! It was comical really.

But this was nothing new, it just seems that's how I make an impression. I stole a small glance at the driver, very quickly before looking away. I guess I really like this guy...because there is nothing I truly want out of him...

He just buys me more time to stall.

When he stopped the car, parking in front of the dormitories, I made no move to get out. "Parties to crash? I'm intrigued, sure let's go." I showed an alluring smirk, then pulled against my seatbelt to shift closer to Joseph. "But. I'm on your schedule, so we'll leave when you say. Got it?" I made sure to keep a steady eye contact, balancing over the armrest.

    "Hmph. This is gonna fun."

She was on his schedule, but there was nothing more he needed to do on that particular evening. Until the next morning, he was free of his student duties; well, save for some studying that he could easily put off until the next day between classes.

As he drove, the temptation to meet her eyes as she spoke was overwhelming. It was by no means a necessity, but no matter how many times he told himself that, he couldn't bring himself to wholeheartedly believe it. He wanted to look at her as she spoke, to see the thoughts moving behind her eyes and to predict them before she spoke.

He failed each time. There was no predicting Vanessa, but it was a real trip to try.

When he parked and could avert her full attention upon her was a moment of equal triumph and sheepfulness. The things this vampiress had done to him- the changes he had seen in himself- in the short time they had known each other... It was remarkable an a number of levels, for Joseph had always been a relatively static, unchanging guy. He was prone to moving with the flow of things, but with Vanessa swimming upstream, he had no choice but to chase her.

And, really, it wasn't that bad. Exhibit A:

[b]"Oh, I am, now am I? I would've thought you, of all people, might prefer working on your own clock." His words were a thinly veiled challenge. He tipped his head to the side. She was so close that he could feel the warmth emanating off of her body, and pick out the flecks of varying greens speckling her irises.

His otherwise solemn facade cracked in record time, thus revealing a pleased, lopsided grin.

"But, hey. Even I can be wrong from time to time. Not usually, 'course." The urge to thrust forward into a kiss began diminishing piece by tiny piece. He glanced once down to her lips, then over to the steering wheel.

"There's really only one party I know of going on tonight," he admitted after a fleeting pause. "It's at the Theta house not far from here. You game?"

I LOVED IT-

"Hmm. You're right trust me. But, I don't know, it's a logical solution to be on your time." When he looked away I peeled back into my seat. What was going up in his mind? Not that it would be hard to find the answer, I liked the mystery game so I kept it even.

However, I think his eyes did glance down. I chuckled to myself, classic shy Joseph. I found his uncertainty of making a move first amusing. So I purposely held back, I wanna see if this guy actually has the 'balls' to pull a move on me.

My eyes closed in another chuckle, "Yeah, I'm game." I leaned back into the seat, opening my green eyes to peer out into the road. The sky was now a shade darker, rows of cars before restaurants and shops. Girls dressed up and ready for a hang out. I glanced down at my own attire. Shorts, and a tank top will just have to suffice today. I had brought a sweater jacket, but that was currently tied around my waist.

Chances are, I'll be back by next week! I have my final exams on Thursday and Friday, and Friday is the last day of school. This weekend, however, I'm going over to my aunt's house and am gonna be hanging out with her, possibly into next week! Sorry about the extensive breaks I've been taking, but lack of inspiration mixed with EXTREME busyness is a real crook in the neck when it comes to me trying to get things done...

Also! I finished and turned in my short story to my journalism teacher this morning, (It's three chapters long because I don't know when or how to stop.) and HE WAS SO IMPRESSED, HE ACTUALLY ALMOST ACCUSED ME OF PLAGIARISM. LIKE HE READ THE FIRST FEW PARAGRAPHS AND CAME UP TO ME, AND TOOK OF HIS GLASSES ALL SERIOUS LIKE,"Kelsey, I've read the first few paragraphs of your story, and... Did you have any help with this or anything?"

AND I WAS SCARED SHITLESS, BUT ALSO THRILLED BECAUSE LOL THAT MUST MEAN IT'S PRETTY DECENT. BUT I TOLD HIM NO, AND HE WENT ON TO TELL ME THAT I'M AN AMAZING WRITER WHO UNDERSTANDS HER WAY AROUND HER WORDS, AND I ALMOST HAD A HEART ATTACK AND DIED RIGHT THEN AND THERE. LIKE I HAVEN'T BEEN SO PROUD OF MY WRITING IN MONTHS. even if i did find a few areas where i messed up after i turned it in. they were tiny mistakes that he probably overlooked, so yay!

I will look forward to next week then!! I so can't wait for school to end omg That's great though I'm happy for you!! I've always loved your writing and so I'm super happy it was successful!!

You know how my inspiration has been lately, but I really did just get back from my Aunt's house... Like fifteen minutes ago.

BUT, the thing is, we would have stayed a bit longer if we hadn't been called home to watch my youngest sister, because my Nanna was put into the hospital this morning. Like, my Nanna is the one person in my family I'm actually close to on any kind of emotional level, so I'm COMPLETELY freaked out. She's pretty young since most women in my family tend to have children as teenagers. She's only fifty-three (I think), but there was some sort of infection in her bladder and kidney, and it got into her blood. My mom says that she'll probably be fine, but they have to "pump her full of fluids" to get rid of the infection, so I'm on babysitting duty tonight, and will probably be going to and from the hospital for the next few days.

I'll keep you updated and try to post as soon as I can!

  • [fancypost borderwidth=0; width: 350px; text-align: justify; font-family: arial; font-size: 9pt; opacity: 0.95; letter-spacing: -1px][color=white] Oh no! Pray she gets better!! :) Take your time, we have ALLL SUMMER and I understand your going through a lot. Besides, trying to force inspiration for something isn't easy! I'm sure once things settle down you'll have time to find your zen. (Barnes & Noble and coffee....yum!)

I do hope your Nanna get's better though, your mom is probably right and she'll be out of the hospital soon!

Reply when you can , I'll be looking out for it!!!
