    The barest of sunlight was trickling in through the Apprentice Den when Amberpaw slowly blinked her eyes open. She drowsily lifted her head. Nobody else seemed to be awake yet. Shaking the moss off of her pelt, she stood and padded out, still half asleep.
    The moment she spotted Sungaze, all pretense of being tired left her and she bolted to his side, circling around him like a hawk circles its prey.
    "Can we go hunting now? Huh? Now? How about now? Please, please, please?"

    Amberpaw nodded her head vigorously, shaking her rusty pelt. Her blue eyes shone with excitement as she closely followed her mentor.
    "I can't wait!" she squealed.
    Though the sun was hardly up, she couldn't believe how bright and warm everything was. The entire forest was bathed in a slanted, golden reflection, the trees and bushes casting long shadows on the earthen floor.
    Her eye caught a drifting leaf in the air, and she quickly tried to pounce on it. She missed it by a pawlength. Unfortunately, the momentum sent her flying and crashing into her mentor, Sungaze. Awkwardly landing on the floor, she shuffled her paws and looked down in embarrassment.
    "Sorry," she muttered.

    She couldn't help herself; Amberpaw's smile grew wide. With an excited mew, she burst ahead, unable to stay at the slow pace that Sungaze was taking. Another day of training!
    Her orange pelt rippled wildly as the wind rushed by, causing her to squint her eyes. Her paws flung her forward at incredible speeds. As she continued running, she accidentally tripped over her paws and was sent sprawling all over the ground. Unfortunately, before she could recover, she realized the ground was sticking to her. No, wait. The ground was rising. Shocked, her blue eyes went wide.
    The sandy earth clung to her pelt like burrs, slowly sucking her deeper and deeper. Quicksand! she realized.
    "Help!" she sputtered.

    IC: Amberpaw's blue eyes were opened wide with fright and shock. After what felt like an eternity of hopeless, frantic flailing, she saw a sight that instantly warmed her heart. Sungaze was padding in front of her like the warrior he was. Amberpaw cried in relief, tears of joy filling her eyes.
    By now, the sand was up to her neck, only her small orange-ish head visible above ground. Her head was swirling faster than the silky substance around her, and she couldn't think straight. The only thing really apparent was an overwhelming feeling of panic.
    "Help!" she screeched again. She saw her mentor walking over and -- thank StarClan! -- was holding a stick out for her to reach. It gave her a renewed sense of energy, and she willed her teeth to grab the end. Her neck strained as far as she could make it, so much that it actually hurt, but it was still a full mouse-length away. She couldn't reach it.
    "Help!" she cried again, her voice cracking with wild fear.

    The she cat reached as far as she could with the sick in her mouth. "Grab it! Please!" She didn't want to see the young apprentice die.

    "I-I'm trying!" she spluttered. Her paws were swimming uselessly beneath the smooth, changing surface. Her blue eyes wide with horror, she was terrified to feel the sand rising to just below her mouth -- or, rather, it was her that was sinking, not the sand rising. Faster than she hoped, the ground was dragging her down, sucking her energy and hope with it. Already she felt her limbs slowing down.
    Terror wrapped around her heart like a snake. She stared with desperate eyes at the one thing that could save her, the one thing that could bring her out of this death trap. Sungaze was stretched as far as he could, legs straining, but Amberpaw simply could not reach the life-line. It wasn't long enough.
    "I don't want to die!" she screeched, panting hard, wild around the edges of her blue eyes. "I don't want to--"
    She had stop talking as the sand had risen to her mouth. Only her petrified eyes and small pink nose where sticking out of the quicksand.

    Ok, trying not to be mean, but SunGaze is a girl. A she cat. You keep saying he or his. She's a girl.

    Sungaze dropped the sick. She did the stupidest thing. But she had to save her apprentice.
    She jumped into the sand. She grabbed Amberpaw's scruff. Feeling sand in her mouth. She pulled to try and get the cat out. She tried to move like she was swimming. On the other side there were rocks so she tried to grab them as she held on to her apprentice for dear life.

    OoC: Oh, my goodness! I am so, so incredibly sorry! I hate when people make that mistake with me, so I completely understand how you feel. I'm not sure why Sungaze sounded like a boy to me. Strange. I even play a girl whose name is Sunpaw. Sorry again!



    IC: Amberpaw took a few frantic breaths through her nose, her mouth completely covered by the rising sand, fear filling her entire frame. In a few short moments, the sand had risen past her pink little nose, and she struggled not to cry out in panic and desperation as she knew she would be wasting her breath. She noticed her mentor pacing around like a fox, and she noticed a certain crazy look enter Sungaze's eyes. Just before the ground rose to cover Amberpaw's vision, she saw Sungaze do the most insane thing StarClan had ever seen -- she jumped in after Amberpaw.
    If Amberpaw could have smiled, she would have. At the moment, she settled for a pleasing blink before going completely under. StarClan, save us now, she prayed.

    Sungaze used her strength to get Amberpaw's head above the sand so she could breathe. She tried to move in the sand to get her and her apprentice out. Then it felt like a pair of jaws grabbed her scruff and pulled. Helping her to the other side.
    The she cat's claws sunk into solid ground and she yanked Amberpaw out and on to the grass before pulling herself out. She shook but the sand stuck to her fur. She didn't care to much though. She went to Amberpaw and started licking her face like a mother would to a new born kit to get it to breathe. She prayed to Starclan that the young she cat would be alright.

    Amberpaw was forced to close her eyes as sand finally spilled over the top of her. For a brief, fraction of a moment, she thought she was going to die, the terror was so overwhelming. A panic gripped her heart tightly, crushing her.
    Against the pulling tide of the sand, she felt a sharp prick in her neck as Sungaze sluggishly pulled her out. Suddenly able to breathe, the apprentice started coughing and hacking on the solid ground. Her dirty orange pelt was absolutely matted with sand, making her look like a light shade of yellow. She was heaving long and ragged breaths, and she could taste the gritty pieces of sand in her teeth.
    After a few moments of understand that she was not going to die that day, she allowed herself to calm down. Her racing heartbeat began to slow.
    "Thank --" she paused, another wild bought of coughing overtook her. Once it was over, she cleared her throat. "Thank you," she murmured with deep gratefulness. "For saving my life."

    Sungaze laid by her. Her body was exhausted. "Your welcome." She panted softly. "I think I should take you to lavenderbloom." She said, wanting the medicine czar to make sure the apprentice was ok after nearly drowning in sand.

    Breathing hard, Amberpaw couldn't help but smile faintly. "Yeah," murmured the exhausted she-cat between breaths. "I can't wait to see the look on her face. Drowning in sand. That's a new one, isn't it?"
    She laughed softly, then cringed. It hurt her chest to laugh, like someone was squeezing all the air from her lungs. Wheezing, feebly flicking her tail, she whispered, "So maybe we should wait to hunt? I don't think HitherClan elders are going to want sandy mice."
