    "Don't feel like you have to help me or anything, I just need to get it off my chest." Amy sighed. "When I officially became Sonic's girlfriend, I was really happy. I thought we would spend more time together, but the opposite is true. He's always busy doing something, and when we do have time together it feels forced, like he's just doing it to appease me." Amy looked at the table counter, her ears pinning back. "I don't even know if he intended to have me as his girlfriend in the first place. Did he just do it to get me to stop chasing him? Did I say anything wrong? I don't even know anymore." She inhaled and spoke again. "Today when we walked together...me and Sonic were supposed to be out on a date. He never showed up."

    Shadow was silent for a long time.


    When he did speak, his voice was quiet.


    "Sonic is a free spirit," he said, "and a scatterbrain. He can easily get distracted and he's not usually very serious, even in battle. I'm sure he meant well when he... accepted your... affections." Shadow sounded awkward. "And I'm no friend of Sonic's, but.. I do know him well enough. I think you need to tell him what you just told me. He may not even realize he's at fault." The black-and-red hedgehog sighed softly.


    He was silent again for a while.


    Then he finally said, hesitantly, "Amy... can I ask you something too?"

    Amy was stunned into silence for a moment. Why did she ask him? She had only talked to him, really, that day. It would make more sense for her to go to Cream or maybe even Tails, someone she knew more personally. "Because..." She stammered. "Because... you won't tell anyone, right? Anyone else I know might tell Sonic, and I know you won't. Besides..." Amy tried to find the words to explain herself. "Something inside me... tells me I can trust you."

    Shadow just stared at the wall for a few minutes.


    But I'm not a trustworthy person, am I...?


    "I wouldn't tell anyone," he said quietly. "Even if I had anyone to talk to but you, I wouldn't -- and I'm not complaining, Amy," he admitted. "I like your company."

    Shadow didn't notice that, or the fact that his own face had suddenly gone very pink. "Yeah," he said quietly, then tilted his head. "Wait... don't you have friends to... to hang out with?"

    "Well, Tails is usually working on an invention, and I'm no help with that. Cream is nice, but tea parties get tiresome after a while. Knuckles and I don't share any interest, and Blaze and Silver are both in the future, of course. And Sonic... I dunno what he does. Run around, prevent crime, I guess." Forget about dates, come up with excuses, and still manage to be cute.

    Shadow sighed. He seemed to sigh a lot. "I guess you've always got me to call if it comes to it."
    He gave a small smile, not that anyone was there to see it.


    Well, he wouldn't have thought so if he'd known that Verte had mounted a minute surveillance camera on the ceiling five months ago.

    "I guess I do, don't I?" Amy sighed. "If Verte won't bug you all the time. How about I come over more often than I call... or maybe we could meet somewhere? You could pretend you're doing something else, so he won't bother you." She realized she was coming up with ideas for date-like scenarios and frowned. "W-Well, if you want to, anyway."

    Shadow hesitated. "That... That would be great... Verte's a lot nosier than that, but if I act like I'm gonna punch him into a wall, he should bug off." He actually chuckled for a moment before his happiness went and faded away, as always. "But there's always the chance that Sonic might..." He trailed off, his mouth still open, remembering the last time he had had to fight Sonic.
