  • "We are fully aware, young one." THe elf replied paitently, "It isn't Master Samwise we need to speak with, though if he is here we will great him." Farrah was sitting quietly, looking ready to fall asleep.

  • "I understand," he murmured, feeling just a little bit awkward at this point. "But I think for now I must go. My companion is clearly exhausted, and I should make sure that she is able to rest comfortably." He offered Farrah a nervous smile, hoping desperately that the other elves were not judging him too harshly. He was doing the best he could, after all.

  • "Of course, young one." The elf replied, "You have joined us in our meal, it is only right to retire. If you wish, and your companion does not mind, you can join us in our conversations after she is tended to."

  • "Very well, then," was the quiet reply. "Farrah, do you...do you need any assistance?" He wasn't quite sure how much she needed him to do, and didn't want to just assume, but the whole thing just felt strange to him. Asking what she needed might have been normal otherwise, but with the other elves present, it seemed odd, out of place. So he waited anxiously for her reply, his hands clasped rather nervously behind his back.

  • Farrah took in a breath, "I can do it myself." She mumbled. Her verbal words should convey what she was saying 'Stay and talk with them. I can handle it.' Standing slowly, Farrah crossed to the other side of the makeshift camp, slowly getting her bedroll out and curling up atop it. The other elves watched quietly, saying nothing as the human departed, "How long have you been travling with her, Master Duilian?"

  • "Only a few days," was the soft reply. He chose not to go into how they had met, or that she was coming with him without the permission of her parents, or that he had really wished to have left her at a village and continued alone. Such things were between himself and her, and he would not reveal them lightly. As it was, all the older elves needed was the answer to the question they had asked, and not to any unspoken words.

  • The elves gave a faint nod, watching Farrah for a moment, "The humans haven't grown and changed, have they?" One asked, a younger male. The elder in the group shook his head, "They havne't." He gaed at Duilian, "Be cautious, young one." He sytated, "Humans are corrupt... Don't fall in their ways."

  • For a few seconds, all Duilin could do was sit silently, still with shock and indecision. Tradition and respect told him to stay quiet, to maybe nod along without saying anything or to murmur some polite agreement. The pride of both himself and his training as a ranger of Ithilien, however, prevented him from doing so, as well as his tenuous friendship with Farrah. Trying to find some sort of middle ground, he spoke softly, "A- actually, sir, I- I think I would perhaps...disagree. I've been brought up among humans, you see - I've trained with them to become a ranger of Ithilien - and besides that, I- I've read a lot of history, and humans have played really quite a large part for the side of good. I- I really don't think they're as bad as you make them out to be."

  • The elf gave a faint dip of his head to show he had heard Duilian's soft words, responding lightly, "That is true, young master, but they have also shown the other side in the past." He murured, "There are times when even the purest of heart can change as quickly as the breeze."

  • "Certainly, but that is true about all races...don't you think?" Duilin asked, resting his chin in his hands. "I mean, both elves and dwarves have done things in the past which could certainly be considered less than honorable in the past. There have been some of every race who have turned to the dark." He closed his eyes for a moment and took a deep breath, trying to fight off the feeling that he was in over his head with this discussion.

  • "Can you name elves who turned into Wraiths, young master?" The elf asked softly, "We know of the dwarves turning corrupt, but can you name elves who fell for the power of the corrupt?" He wasn't saying this to force Duilin into silence, rather to make him think. If he said the humans were not bad, he needed to proove it.

  • "Wraiths, no," he replied. "But explain Eol to me, or Maeglin, without mentioning the darkness or the corrupt." Perhaps he had been raised among humans, but that was no reason for him to not know his own history. His parents had made sure that he was well-versed in the stories of the First and Second Ages, and now it seemed that it was becoming useful.

  • The faintest of smiles, for a fleeting moment, crossed over the elf's face, "You do remember our history, young master." He said softly, sitting up, "None the least, be careful with the human. As unlikely as it may seem, it is possible for her to turn against you."

  • "I understand, sir," he replied, watching the elf calmly. Duilin honestly doubted that such a thing would happen - Farrah didn't seem like the type to be drawn in by the lures of the darkness - but all the same he supposed that the advice had been meant well. At some point, he needed to show respect for his elders and their greater experiences.

  • The elf nodded. They continued quiet conversations with Duilin, excusing themselves to rest after a while. Farrah was curled on the blanket she had, having heard quite a bit of the conversations. Would she be corrupted? The thought terrified her, the faintest of shifting from her body rising in the air as she pulled herself nearer.s

  • Duilin did not sleep. He moved toward the edge of their makeshift camp and sat there; pulling his knees up to his chest. Someone needed to keep watch, after all, and it might as well be him; it would be impolite to ask his elders to keep watch. If they felt the need to do so, they would have approached him about it. As it was, he kept his eyes open but let his mind rest, his thoughts slipping into the strange patterns of Elvish dreams. If anything were to happen—any sound out of the ordinary—he would return immediately to his usual self, ready to see what was going on and what needed to be done.

  • With her thoughts plauging her, Farrah was unable to slip off. She gave a whimpering sigh, slowly sitting up and looking around. Duilin was keeping watch, it seemed. She took in a breath and forced herself to stand, stepping to the horses and checking on them quietly. They nuzzled at her hand and she gave a weak smile, stroking their fur before moving away. The fire was sying off, the female slowly sitting before it now and thinking.

  • He noticed her rising and moving about, but did not stir from his place. She was allowed to do what she liked, after all; it was not his place to give commands. It might have been nice to sit and talk, perhaps, but for the moment he needed to rest, even if it was simply resting his mind while keeping his body awake and alert. There would be more opportunities for conversation. So he stayed quiet and still, until in the late hours of the night one of the older elves came and took over the watch for him. Duilin might normally have looked for a safer or more comfortable place to lay down, but on this occasion he lay back and fell into sleep, exhausted.

  • Farrah returned to her resting place after Dulin rested once more, the female curling up and staring at the bushes. She had a rising, unnerved feeling, whimpering in worry as she sat there.

  • Fortunately for the both of them, the last few hours of the night passed calmly, without attack by outside forces. Had he been awake to consider this, Duilin might have guess that it was because of the size of their group; with the additional elves around, they were too large of a group to be worth attacking; the difficulty would not be worth any potential gain. As it was, he remained asleep until the early morning light brightened the sky, sunlight touching upon his face. The young elf sat up, running his hands through sleep-tousled hair, and looked around for Farrah.
