In the Bible, the Nephilim were the offspring of humans and angels, although it is unknown if they really existed or not. In The Shadowhunter's Codex, the Angel Raziel is said to have named Jonathan and his new breed after the Nephilim of the Bible, even making references as such, though this too is unknown as no official records exists of what exactly happened that day.

¢яєαтιση
A thousand years ago, shortly after 1000 AD, the Earth was invaded by hordes of demons. During the times when the Crusades first began, particularly believed to be some time in the winter months, a crusader named Jonathan called on Raziel, though it was believed by many that it was a warlock who truly summoned the Angel. Jonathan begged Raziel to help save humanity. Seeing the honesty and nobility of his wish, the angel obliged and mixed his blood with that of Jonathan in the Mortal Cup, a mixture he let Jonathan drink. Raziel then gave Jonathan the other two Mortal Instruments, the Gray Book, and the fitting name of Shadowhunter as a symbol of his transformation.
Soon, more men and women drank from the cup and became Nephilim warriors themselves. They soon became known as Shadowhunters, after Jonathan, the first of their kind. Their children, and their children's children, inherited their parents' angelic blood and became Nephilim themselves.
For some reason, undisclosed at this point, 1234 is a significant date among Shadowhunters: along with the Nephilim motto, the date is inscribed on the base of the statue by the entrance to the Silent City in New York. The 11th and 13th centuries are also cited by the Shadowhunter's Codex as the beginning and peak, respectively, of the promotion of the race of the Nephilim, when new members were being sought for and recruited after the death of the first Shadowhunters, and the two points in time pointed out as when the first edition of the Codex was written, the first being the time given in the presumption that the Codex was written by Jonathan Shadowhunter, and the second estimated based on modern research and dating techniques.

In 1872, the Shadowhunters signed the first of the Accords, becoming the first step in the peace negotiations with the Downworld populace.
In 1878, the Shadowhunters of the London Institute faced the Magister and his clockwork army, whose intent was to create a formidable new race of half-Nephilim, half-demon beings, with the first of their kind, Tessa Gray, capable of several unknowable abilities—one of which was the power to Change when the demon parent is an Eidolon. His plan was foiled, however, with the combined efforts of the few members of the London Enclave and the warlock Magnus Bane

Another great tragedy, called the Uprising, occurred in 1991, during the signing of the Ninth Accords. A group of dissidents called the Circle and led by Valentine Morgenstern considered the Clave and Covenant outdated and in need of reform. They advocated and upheld their belief that they must increase their numbers by turning more mundanes with the Mortal Cup, and that they must once again be united and up in arms primarily against Downworlders.
During the signing, they planned to slaughter the attending unarmed Downworlders, as well as the Shadowhunters who would resist and defend the Downworlders. While they were stopped and countered by Downworlder reinforcements, all of whom were informed and prepared by Valentine's wife, Jocelyn, and former parabatai, Luke, there were still several casualties. Despite the Circle's efforts, the Accords was signed nonetheless.
21тн ¢єηтυяу
In 2007, Valentine returned and planned to wipe out the current Shadowhunter race, at least those who would resist his proposal for change, and finally refresh their numbers by calling upon the angel Raziel once again. He summoned a demon army and set them on Alicante, and a great battle, referred to as the Mortal War, took place, once again ending in death on both sides. Valentine was ultimately defeated, brought down by Raziel himself.
After his death, however, his son, Sebastian Morgenstern, took up after him, albeit going down a different path. With the help of Lilith, Jonathan plotted to start a war to raise Hell and rule the human world with his army of Endarkened Shadowhunters, corrupted with Lilith's blood and the Infernal Cup.
Jonathan Turned a large number of unwilling Nephilim, and killed even more during the invasion of Idris that became referred to as the Dark War. While Jonathan was ultimately defeated, it was too late as a large majority of the Shadowhunters gathered at Alicante had already been slaughtered. To salvage their population, the Clave decided to reopen the Academy and recruit more mundanes for Ascension.
Also, for the betrayal of the Fair Folk during the war, the Shadowhunters forced a treaty with the Seelie Court that the faeries pay reparations for damages dealt to the Nephilim and the Praetor Lupus, and that there no longer be fey warriors or armies, that any of them seen bearing weapons, without consent from the Clave, can and will be lawfully killed. The terms drew the ire of their kind, and fierce criticism and condemnation from the Council warlock representative Magnus Bane; nonetheless, the faeries begrudgingly accepted.

Spring, 2008:
Archangel Raziel, the Keeper of Secrets and the Angel of Mysteries, as well as being the creator of Shadowhunters, watched from above as his children fought with his, and theirs by blood right, enemies: The Demons.
As of now, there was a shift in Good from Evil, something that hadn't happened in eons. Normally, the two kept in balance with each other, but for the past few years the Shadowhunters of this generation had been pushing the demons back. Something that made him immensely proud, seeing as Valentine, Sebastian, and with the help of Lilith, a Greater Demon and mother of all Warlocks, had almost ended it all.
But, even now, he, along with the other Archangel's, could feel evil plotting and planning. The forces of evil did not like this power shift in the least.
Leaning back in the chair he sat in, which had a pool in front of him that allowed him to see each and ever Shadowhunter child of his, Raziel watched as a beautiful Archangel walked into his chambers. Her name was Uriel, she was also the Right-Hand of God and most powerful of all Archangels. Uriel's normally smoky, see through wings, were now totally translucent, only the outline of them to be seen.
In shock, Raziel elegantly jumped to his feet and ran over to her.
"Uriel, what's happened to you!" Being this close to her, Raziel could see the blood, which was also translucent, run down her body and robes.
Hands trembling, Uriel placed them onto Raziel's check, "Lucifer has returned," she choked out, "I was on my daily patrol, and was ambushed." Uriel's voice was quieting already, "Lucifer, Asmodeus, Azazel, Belial, and Leviathan. All of them. I was able to banish them back into hell, but they've already succeed, cant you feel it?"
Raziel could, with Uriel's coming death, the death of an Archangel and God's Right-Hand, see the balance of power would once more equal out, if not shift to Evil.
"Please," Uriel whispered, "I have a request."
"Whatever it is Uriel, I will do it."
"Take what is left of my Soul, my Power, my Being, and put each into three unborn Shadowhunter babies. They shall be known as The Artifices. Within them will live the essence of two Archangels, you and I, they will be the most graceful and skilled and powerful of all Showhunter's. They will be able to shift balance once more." Voice fading, Uriel looked at Razel with expecting eyes.
"I will do it." He replied.
A smile touched Uriel's beautiful lips, "Then let it be done."
Already he could feel Uriel building her power, along with splitting it into three. How she was able to do this, Raziel was unsure. She was more powerful than he, or anyone else, had thought. Maybe even equal with God himself. What little power she did have left almost equaled the power he did have now. These three Shadowhunters would be like Angels in their own right.
Light suddenly enveloped everything. When it faded, three small orbs were before him. One aqua blue, her Being, another blood red, her Power, and the last was a brilliant pink, her Soul. Which unborn children Raziel would give these three gifts to, he was unsure.
Gently picking up each orb, he walked over to his pool and looked down into it. Each family in their own right deserved this power, but the families that stood out to him the most were the: Fairchild, Herondale, Blackthorn, Carstairs, and Lightwood families.
Now, it would come down to which families were each going to be having children, which ruled out the Herondale family, seeing as Jace and Clarissa had not yet begun to try for them. But Jocelyn, Clarissa's mother, was expecting, not that she knew it. Her child would be part Downworlder, which ruled the child out. The children that would receive Uriel's gift must be pure of blood. That left the Blackthorn's, Carstairs, and Lightwoods. Each of which had family members expecting, thankfully.
The Blackthron's would be Uriel's Soul, the Carstairs her Being, and the Lightwoods her Power. With his mind made up, Raziel took each orb, one at a time, and placed them into his pool. Each soon dissolved into it and he watched as little sprinkles of pink, blue, and red swirled and made their way invisibly into each expecting mother, sealing their children's fate to become one of The Artifices, the children of Uriel, because now, they were more a part of her than him. They were a new breed of Shadowhunter, something that no one had ever seen before. Raziel sent a silent prayer to each of them, they may very well become the thing that ended this long and hard war. At least, he hoped so.

December 24, 2018:
Acilante, Idris

Selene Lucille Blackthorn couldn't help smiling as she heard Blaise Lightwood, Jonathan Carstairs, and Marcus Graymark bustled into her home. They filled the room with a pinewood scent, which made Selene long to leave her house. But, alas, that was not to be, at least for now. Sitting her family copy of the “Gray Book” down onto the clear, florescent, coffee table, she turned around and smiled at them. They all stopped talking and looked at her, blushed touched Blaise's cheeks and he looked away, but Jonathan and Marcus stared at her.
“What's wrong with you, Seelie?” They said in unison, using their very annoying nickname for her.
Selene tried not to flinch and simply shrugged. A black mark in the shape of an eye could be seen on each of the boys hands. Something they'd received only a week ago. It was their very first rune, just like her own which could be seen on her own right hand. Only, her right hand was bandaged tightly and about double it's normal size. The marking hadn't gone as planned, Selene hadn't been strong enough for it. Something that, even at her young age, she could tell made her father beyond embarrassed.
All four of them had received their marking at the same time, of the four, she was the only one to fail the marking, her body physically unable to bond with it yet. It made her feel like a failure, like she was falling behind and her friends were leaving her in the dust. Out of all of them, why had it been her to reject the mark?
Seeming to sense her pain, all three joined her on the spacious couch. Blaise sat to her right and genitally drew her bandaged hand into his own. Warmth flushed into her cheeks. Jonathan sat to her left, while Marcus sat next to him. Unlike Blaise and Jonathan, Selene and Marcus weren't that close. Though, Jonathan and Marcus were about as close as she and him were. Blaise simply preferred to stick by her, befriending who she befriended. Not that he wasn't close as the other boys, but Selene and him seemed to have an unbreakable bond that wasn't their with the others. She was sure that they'd become parabatais one day.
Soon, the adults started filling the room. First came Clarissa and Jace Herondale, with a girl around seven hanging to her fathers leg. Jace also had his arms wrapped protectively around Clarissa, whom was heavy with another child. It was strange that they only had one child as of yet, seeing as many Shadowhunters their age already had two, or even three.
Next came Alexander and Elizabeth Carstairs, who unlike Jace and Clarissa, already had three children, counting Jonathan. Each were around five and also twin. They were the most destructive and outspoken children Selene had ever seen. It was a blessing they'd been left at home, for whatever this meeting was about. Something they'd no doubt annoy Jonathan about non-stop, trying to milk every bit of information they could.
Soon entered Jocelyn and Luke Graymark, along with Robert and Maryse Lightwood, who chatted in earnest. Jacelyn and Luke were in their late-forties, and the mother and step-father to Clarissa. Robert and Maryse were also in their late forties. It was often a mystery to Selene why they'd both had Marcus and Blaise at such an old age, not that she was complaining.
Finally came her father Arthur, who, unlike the others, had no wife. Selene's mother had died giving birth to her, and Arthur had never remarried. So, unlike the rest, she had no brothers or sisters, along with no mother.
Clearing his throat, Arthur said in a clear, authoritative voice, “We have come here today to honor the marking of our children. Each of them born only months apart, are the future. So, it is my honor to hereby announce them as true and honor bound Shadowhunters, protectors of Idris and all whom live inside it, as well as being the protectors of the mundane world.” Each of the adults clapped, some more enthusiastic than others.
The rest of the evening was uneventful. Soon, all of the boys, inclusing Blaise, grew bored and wondered outside to play. Selene was forced to say in, as her father had said. It was unbearable.
A shifting on the couch made Selene look up, coming face to face with Clarissa. Selene tried her best not to gawk at the beautiful red-headed woman. Her body was covered in exotic, never before seen runes. It was an honor just to see them up close.
“Why are you not outside with the others, young one?” In response, Selene simply raised her swollen hand.
“Ah, I see.”
In a quick movement, Clarissa had Selene's hand in her own, unwrapping the bandage gently. The skin was purple and red, yellow puss coming out of the marking outline. She heard the sharp intake of breath from Clarissa as she took in the scene before her. And, indeed, it was not a pretty one.
In seconds, Clarissa had her stele out, drawing a healing rune onto Selene's paper-thin skin. Unlike her first, this one did not hurt at all. The purple and red skin cleared up, and the puss seemed to melt away.
“How?”
“That mark, whoever did it, did it wrong. An easy mistake, I suppose for an amateur.”

Now that her hand was back to normal, Clarissa set about fixing Selene's hand. Once done, Selene felt light-headed and hungry. But she knew this was how one should feel after their first marking.
“Thank you.”
“You're very welcome, Selene.”

Smiling, Selene got to her feet, waving a quick goodbye to Clarissa, and rushed outside to be with her friends. Not only did she feel amazing, she also felt whole once more. It was a good feeling, seeing as her father would now look at her with pride.
---
Watching the girl run outside, a sense of foreboding ran through Clary. Something was strange, not quite right about her. But, seeing as something wasn't quite right with Clary herself, who was she to judge?
And why had the girls father purposely messed up her first marking, knowing it would bring her pain? It was something she would find out in due time. Though, not right this moment.
Lost in thought, Clary didn't notice that Adele, her daughter, had wrapped her small arms around Clary's legs. Looking down at her daughter, Clary smiled. This tiny girl was hers and Jace's entire world.

Los Angeles Institute

Selene shivered as she silently made her way through the Los Angeles Institute. Over a decade ago, many of her and the Carstairs family members had been slaughtered and turned into dark Shadowhunters. Even now, a shadow covered the once happy place.
At the moment, it was only her and Arthur, Selene's father, staying at the Institute, the others called off for Shadowhunter business. Even Jonathan, who was the same age as her, had gotten to go with his family to check on the distress call up in the New York Institute. At the though of New York, Blaise jumped into Selene's mind. They hadn't seen each other in months, but would often video chat via Skype. Unlike her, Blaise had grown in size, around six-feet at the age of fourteen, while she stayed in the lower five-feet range. But, her body had filled out in other ways. Her breast were starting to become rounder, perkier, but still remained small. Selene's body was also starting to become curvier. Helen, her cousin, often called her: “Their little fairy”, even if she, herself, was part fay and not Selene.
Quickening her steps, Selene entered her room. It was a small, yet comfortable, space. Her computer screen also had a message box popped up.
Walking over too it, her face brightened when she read the message that had been sent to her only about three minutes ago:

Blaise: Hey Selene, how r u 2day? :)
Selene quickly replied back:
Selene: Good, and you?
Blaise: I'm okay, just got back from Demon hunting. Nothing big. Wish you could have came with Jonathan and every1 else.
Selene: Same, it's really lonely here with just me and dad. Maybe I can come next time?
Blaise: Ya, hopefully. I miss you. Tell Arthur “Hello” for me.
Selene: Will do, up for a video chat later tonight?
Blaise: Sure! Cant wait to see u!
Selene: Alright, see you later tonight! Logging off for now to do some training.
Blaise: Bye! See u later!

Blaise has logged out
Chat Disconnected

Selene couldn't help but blush. Most of their chats were brief like that, lasting only a few minutes at most. But, their video chats could sometimes last for hours. Those hour long chats were what Selene looked forward too when it came to the end of the day.
Doing as she said she would, Selene picked up one of her chakhrams and began to expertly spin it before lettering it go. With a whizzing sound, it lodged itself deeply into the practice board. The mark was clean and precise, no margin of error to be seen. Hours of practice had made her a master with the weapon.
This went on for a few more hours until her computer made a dinging sound. Eyes wide, she quickly changed into a velvet shirt that said: “I ♥ New York”, which had been a gift from Blaise, sent to her though the mail. She also put her hair into a neat bun, held into place with a pencil.
Finally, she sat down in her chair and hit “Accept?” for the Skype video chat.
Blaises face popped up in front of her.
“Hey Selene!” He said happily.
“Hi Blaise.” She replied.
And just like that, they became absorbed in their conversation.
It wasn't until 4 AM that they called it quits for bed. When each had finally closed down their windows, Selene made her way to her bed. Laying down, she stared up at nothing until she finally fell asleep.

November 17, 2022:
Los Angeles Institute

Tears burned at the edge of Selene's eyes as her father looked down at her, face cold as stone. He'd been arguing with her for the past hour, trying to make her do something she didn't want too. Eventually, he did want any Shadowhunter parent would have: He put Selene in her place.
“I just cant understand why you don't want the Carstairs boy as a parabatai. Our families have matched up in pares for generations! I had a Carstairs parabatai, my brother had one, even your cousin, even if we shouldn't be talking about her, took on a Carstair parabatai!”
“But father! I already have someone in mind to become my parabatai!”
“Who? The Lightwood boy you're so fond of? You are too good for him!”

This, Selene knew, was untrue, but she didn’t interrupt her father again, in fear that he may punish her more.
“You will take Jonathan Carstairs as your parabatai or so help me God, I will make sure you never, ever, see Blaise Lightwood again.”
With a sharp intake of breath, Selene was barley able to squeak out, “Yes sir.”
A smile came to her fathers face and he gave a approving nod, “I will tell the Carstairs that the marking will take place tonight.”
When the time came for the marking, Jonathan gave her a sweet smile, stele in hand. Together they must choose matching places on their bodies for the parabatai rune. The only place it never went was over the heart. For that reason, Selene was unsure.
After a few moments, they decided to put the run on their upper right arms. A common enough place. Selene was please with where the marking would be going. It wasn't an intimate place, and for that she was grateful.
Together, they began to draw the rune on each other. It only took a few minutes and then they were done. Jonathan smiled broadly at her. She smiled weakly back. They were now bound together stronger than blood, stronger than family, stronger than friends. Brother and Sister joined together by an invisible tether in the fighter against evil.
After the marking, Selene fabricated a telltale about being tried and escaped to her room. Once there, she sat down at her computer screen and stared blankly at the screen. Eventually, like near the end of every day, a Skype video message popped up: “Accept?” and like every day, she did.
Coming face to face with Blaise, tears began to stream down her face. Blaise was quite, letting her cry without interruption. After what seemed like hours, but was only a few minutes, she was finally able to get it together and explain what had happened.
Selene look at Blaise's face, which was like stone. For a few more minutes, they just looked at each other. Then, finally, he smiled and said, “Everything will be okay,” only, Selene knew it wouldn't. Nothing would be the same now.

September 27, 2024:
New York Institute

Something sharp hit Selene across the cheek, sending her flying into the wall. Her head made a sickening sound when the two met. Pain enveloped her and stars danced behind her eyelids.
Suddenly, she was lifted into the air by strong arms. Not the arms of the demon they'd been fighting, but the arms of Blaise. If it wasn't for the fiery pain the jumped around inside her head, she would most likely enjoy being held like she was at the moment.
“Selene? Selene! Can you hear me?”
She mumbled something relatively close to, “Yes” but sounded closer to “Yrrrsh”, no doubt a bad sign.
“Just gotta get you somewhere safe and I'll get a healing rune on you. Don't go to sleep on me, you hear?”
But her eyes were already closing, her breathing becoming shallow. It felt as if something inside her head was moving around, which it probably was for all she knew. There was no more pain, only a numbness. If Selene had to guess, her cheek bone was broken due to whatever had hit her and her skull was broken as well thanks to the wall. What a mess she was in.
Finally, after what seemed like forever, Blaise sat her down on a patch of grass. If Selene had to guess, they were somewhere in Central Park. She hadn't been in Central Park in years.
“Alright Selene, get ready, this might be a little painful.”
Healing runes weren't meant to be painful. They numbed and lighten and, of course, healed. If she was going to be in pain, she must be in a pretty bad state.
When Blaise's stele touched her skin, pain began to blossom as it was drawn. Selene wasn't one for screaming, but she was about too. When the pain became to much, whimpers escaped her lips.
“It's alright Selene, I've got you, I've got you. Just have to give the rune time to stitch everything together.”
At that, he put her head on his shoulder, so that they were chest to chest. When the dizziness passed, Selene opened her eyes. Everything was steadier now.
“Don't ever do that to me again, not ever again Selene,” Blaise murmured into her ear.
Heat was suddenly all over her body. Not a bad heat, but a good one. It seemed to radiate from her to Blaise.
Gasping, his eyes became glazed as he looked down at her. His lips were slightly opened. She wanted to kiss him, but she held herself back.
When the heat was gone, something began to blossom in her left breast bone. Blaise seemed to feel it as well, because he pushed her away enough to lift up his shirt. Muscle upon muscle rippled like water as he did.
After a few moments, a dark rune could be seen over his heart. It was a parabatai marking. Only, it seemed to have a faint illumination to it, a sort of shimmer that wasn't there one moment, and there the next. Only, when it did have the illumination, it was in the shape of angel wings.
Gasping, Selene pulled up her tattered shirt, not caring if he saw the outline of her small breast inside the lace bra she wore. The same marking was over her heart. With the two of them this close, an invisible tether could be seen, connecting the two of them.
“Blaise, what have I done?” Her voice wasn't scared, but in awe.
“I don't know Selene, but we have to keep this between us. We have too.”
Looking up into Blaise's eyes, she saw a fire burning in them. A protectiveness, but also something else beneath that. Something hidden. Something he didn't want her to see.
The way he looked at her brought blush to her cheeks and all she could do was nod in agreement. If anyone found out about what she'd done, they'd want to know how. Only, she didn't know how.
Whatever had happened, people would look at her like a freak if the found out she had two parabatai when some didn't even have one. No doubt those that did have one, but had lost him or her would look at Selene with hatred. They'd also take her away from Blaise if the found out, because it wasn't hard for one to figure out she loved him.
As if reading her thoughts, he brought her into a friendly, yet protective embrace. Selene no longer felt any pain and couldn't help herself from wrapping her arms around him like he did her. For the moment, she just enjoy his comfort presence, and even if it was just an embrace between friends, it would always be so much more to her.

If you, soon-to-be Shadowhunter, have not yet traveled there, you will likely do so in order to drink from the Cup and receive your first Marks, and there you will see the beauty and tranquility that have made it the best-loved of all Shadowhunter places. Angelic enchantment appears in each leaf, each river stone, each dwelling. The land stands presided over by the soaring fingers of adamas that form the towers protecting its capital, Alicante. These towers surround us with angelic light and shield the city and its people from demonkind.
ωнєяє ιѕ ι∂яιѕ? ωнαт ιѕ ιт ℓιкє?
The country of Idris is small, barely visible on a map of Europe. It is in fact little more than the city of Alicante, the plains that gently unroll beneath its walls, and the surrounding mountain range that protects it. Alicante is the only city—indeed, the only major settled area—in the country. This makes much of Idris difficult to traverse, even for Shadowhunters; its mountains are impassible except in high summer, due to heavy snows, and its woods, especially Brocelind Forest, are dense and unmarked by trails. Idris is, nonetheless, very beautiful country: low Alpine, stacked with sheaves of pine trees, among which meander countless rivulets and brooks. Though the land is different from any of its mundane neighbors—Germany, France, Switzerland—it evokes the same beauty as the landscapes of those countries.
Idris was not, as is commonly believed, made from land “stolen” from its bordering countries. Instead Raziel created an entirely new country, like blowing a bubble, in the middle of Europe. It is land made for no purpose other than to be a home for the Nephilim.
нσω тσ gєт тσ ι∂яιѕ
In order to reach Idris by air, one must fly to one of the airports in a neighboring country and travel overland across its border. Those who are used to the delights of mundane transportation technology may find this somewhat retrogressive, but we invite you to think of it instead as charmingly quaint. Of course, until the beginning of the twentieth century, the only means of reaching Idris at all was overland travel. The travel problem caused by Idris’s landlocked status was eventually solved by the invention of the Portal, now the most common means of getting there and back.
тнє ωαя∂ѕ σƒ ι∂яιѕ
The wards around Idris are unique, and have proved impossible to comprehend or duplicate despite all our years of study. Humans are able to create wards that divert certain individuals away from a place or an object; they do this sometimes by illusion and sometimes by distraction. This is true of both Gray Book Marks and warlock magic. If a mundane passes through the Idris wards, however, he will be transported instantly to the corresponding location on the opposite border. This happens without any side effects or signs, so a mundane will have no awareness that he has passed instantly through an entire country. From the perspective of mundanes, it is as if Europe exists with no Idris in it at all, and indeed, this is how mundane maps depict things.
The wards of Idris were created by Raziel himself, as part of the initial set of gifts that he presented to Jonathan Shadowhunter. Their magic was not, apparently, magic that Raziel decided to share with his creations the Nephilim, and so we are unable to duplicate elsewhere, or at all modify, the wards of the Idris borders. Over the years Nephilim have argued endlessly about why the Idris wards allow the free passage of Downworlders and even demons themselves into Idris. In other words the wards prevent the discovery of Idris by the mundane world, but all members of the Shadow World may pass in and out freely. Many Shadowhunters have argued that Raziel’s purpose in warding Idris was to prevent the Nephilim from ever becoming involved in land conflicts with its neighbors. Idris is meant as a hidden sanctuary from the mundane, and as a home, not as a political entity among the nations of the world, and as such, its borders can never be altered.
ι∂яιѕ αη∂ тнє мσ∂єяη ωσяℓ∂
Idris’s unspoiled nature is maintained in part by its wards, but strict Law also prevents the country from becoming modernized. This is partly because such improvements would be unworkable: magic easily disrupts modern technology. The wards that prevent mundanes from being able to enter or even detect Idris cause the whole country to exist in a “magical cage” that prevents machinery from working reliably within its borders. (This is similar to the disruption that prevents Marked firearms from functioning, and indeed, no firearm can be successfully fired within Idris.) As such, Alicante is lit and powered primarily by witchlight, as are those rare roads that have been illuminated.
ι∂яιѕ αη∂ ∂σωηωσяℓ∂єяѕ
Idris is home to a number of Downworlder groups—faerie courts, werewolf packs in the forests, vampire clans in caves or in dark rocky valleys. For these Downworlders, Idris provides a space where they can live freely without having to disguise their identities, and where they can have land of their own, under their control. Those who live in Idris tend to be among the wildest of Downworlders, since they are the ones most willing to renounce the human world and live entirely away from mundanes. (This is even true for faeries, who, despite their prickliness, have a real affinity for humans and usually prefer to live among them.)
On the rare occasion when it has been necessary to bring an individual mundane into Idris for a moment of collaboration, or as part of Ascension proceedings, a Portal has proved the only method of circumventing the wards.

ℓαкє ℓуη
Other than Alicante the most sacred site for Shadowhunters in Idris is Lake Lyn, sometimes called the Lake of Dreams. It is the location where the Angel Raziel first appeared to Jonathan Shadowhunter, rising out of the waters and bearing the Cup, Sword, and Mirror that birthed our warrior race. Though the lake is sacred, its waters are in some way cursed: While Downworlders can drink from it safely, Shadowhunters who do so will suffer fevers, hallucinations, and sometimes, in severe cases, permanent madness. A Shadowhunter who has drunk from Lake Lyn can be healed with the use of healing Marks and other interventions, but they must be treated quickly, before the water has been absorbed fully into the system and cannot be drawn out again.
The shores of Lake Lyn give way to Brocelind Plain, a flat terrain of high grasses, which leads, as one heads toward Alicante, to Brocelind Forest. Writings tell us that the forest used to be much larger and covered the majority of the lowlands of Idris. Much of it was cleared as Alicante grew from being a small settlement in the center of a ring of demon towers to a large, bustling city. More of the forest was cleared to keep an easily patrolled border of open land around the city; Brocelind Forest has for hundreds of years been a favorite hiding place for vampire nests and werewolf packs.

αℓι¢αηтє
Alicante, the Glass City. The holy city of the Nephilim. For Shadowhunters, Alicante is Jerusalem and Rome and Mecca and Shamballa and Bodh Gaya all in one. This must never be forgotten: While daily life goes on in the city as in any other, full of routine human needs and exchanges, it is the Forbidden City, the place given only to Nephilim as our base of operations and our haven on Earth.
To that end its towers protect it from demons, who cannot pass through the wards. Downworlders are able to pass through the wards without difficulty (a common argument for many years in favor of Downworlders’ status as humans with souls, rather than demons), but they may not enter Alicante without permission. They are allowed to enter only as an invited guest of a Shadowhunter, and must either be accompanied by the Shadowhunter or carry with them the appropriate enchanted signed paperwork. (It is possible that you yourself have been through this process, if you were lucky enough to visit Alicante prior to your Ascension.) By tradition Downworlders are permitted to enter the city only through its north gate, which is guarded night and day.
In addition, for security reasons new Portals may not be opened directly into Alicante. Despite the partially demonic origin of the Portal, Shadowhunters have grown used to its convenience, and so typically Portals are opened to the outskirts of Alicante, outside the walls. The only exception is the permanent Portal in the Gard. Shadowhunters often grumble about it, but the prohibition remains: Portals are created by warlocks, and while we are allied with warlocks as a group, we could not leave a hole in our defenses that would allow any possible rogue to open a Portal directly into our sanctum sanctorum.
ƒєαтυяєѕ σƒ αℓι¢αηтє
The city is found in a shallow valley and divided by its river. The construction is mostly in gold- and honey-colored stone, with red tile roofs. Alicante rises up the side of a steep hill on one side, and its houses pile atop one another. From the river, canals have been dug, of which the largest is Princewater Canal. The new Shadowhunter is encouraged to stroll down Princewater Street and stand upon Oldcastle Bridge, from which the sound of the lapping water of the canal will accompany your excellent view of both the Gard and the Great Hall.
Apart from its unusual demon towers, Alicante is a city of canals. Since wells must be kept shallow to avoid piercing the adamas veins below the city, and the adamas provides a similar problem for Roman-style aqueducts, for many hundreds of years most fresh water was brought into the city by a series of artificial canals, crossed by Alicante’s distinctive arched stone bridges. Today a network of underground pipes allows for running water in most Alicante homes, and its canals remain as reminders of an older age and as a charming feature of the city.

As with all populations, the Nephilim have developed their own culture and traditions. They have traditions and habits that, though not official laws, are expected of them.
яєℓιgιση
The Nephilim do not conform to any mundane religion as they have allied themselves with every mundane belief system. Also, individual Shadowhunters are allowed to believe what they choose. Some Shadowhunters see their own lifestyle and beliefs as a separate religion. Mainly, they have their own beliefs about angels, demons, Heaven, and Hell, and they worship the Angel Raziel as their creator. Still, the Nephilim acknowledge the truths in mundane religions, mythologies, tales, and legends, and often integrate this into their real world knowledge.
Every mundane religion are also partly aware of the ongoing battle against demons, having been affected by the Incursion themselves. However, since mundanes would not be capable of fighting demons, they merely incorporated their existence and the battle against them methodically into belief systems as different evil entities. Their leaders instead opted to help by assisting the Nephilim, who are equipped to battle the demons, in their mission, as long as Shadowhunters do not cleave to a single religion.
Contacts and relations were established between the Nephilim and the more mystical orders of the world's major religions, with a small group of chosen leaders acting as the representatives of each religion, signing secret treaties that promises the continued provision of havens and weapons for Shadowhunters in exchange for protection. Their end of the bargain is upheld by allowing the Nephilim access to their different religious communities, holy buildings, or places of worship as havens, or for their numerous hidden caches or reserves of holy tools and equipment for Shadowhunter use, the oldest of which is said to be in the Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio in Milan, dating to over five hundred years ago.
ƒєѕтινιтιєѕ

While most Shadowhunters typically do not participate in or observe mundane religious or cultural traditional celebrations or holidays such as Christmas or Thanksgiving, some have accepted it as a custom, though without the religious significance it has for mundanes.

Black for hunting through the night
For death and mourning the color’s white
Gold for a bride in her wedding gown
And red to call enchantment down.
White silk when our bodies burn,
Blue banners when the lost return.
Flame for the birth of a Nephilim,
And to wash away our sins.
Gray for knowledge best untold,
Bone for those who don’t grow old.
Saffron lights the victory march,
Green will mend our broken hearts.
Silver for the demon towers,
And bronze to summon wicked powers.

Welcome and Congratulations. You have been chosen to become one of the Nephilim. Soon, if you have not done so already, you will drink from the Mortal Cup, taking into yourself the blood of angels, and you will become one of the “Shadowhunters,” named for the founder of our order. Our eternal work is the battle against the forces of darkness that encroach upon our world. We also keep the peace in the Shadow World—the hidden societies of magic and magical creatures wrought by the demons we fight—and keep it hidden from the mundane world. And this now is also your charge. You are protector, defender, knight errant in the name of the angels. You will be trained to fight demons, to protect mundanes, to negotiate the complex landscape of the Downworlders—werewolves, vampires, and the like—that you will encounter. Your life will be spent in the pursuit of the angelic against the demonic. And when you die, you will die with glory.
This may appear an intimidating description of the Shadowhunter’s life, but we must emphasize the sacredness and the weight of our mission. Joining the Nephilim is not like becoming a mundane policeman, or even a mundane soldier. “Shadowhunter” is not what you do; it is who you are. Every aspect of your life will change to accommodate the holy assignment you have been chosen for.
This Codex serves to assist you in acclimating to the new world into which you have been thrust. Most Shadowhunters are born into this life, raised and immersed in it constantly from birth, and thus many things about the world that are second nature to them will be new to you. You have been recruited out of your mundane life, and you will quickly encounter much that is confusing and dangerous. This book is designed specifically to reduce your confusion and, ideally, to keep you alive long enough to become a full Shadowhunter in good standing in your local Institute.

ωнαт ιѕ α ѕнα∂σωнυηтєя?
The Nephilim are the appointed warriors on Earth of the Angel Raziel. We are appointed specifically to control and preside over the demonic in our world, both demons and the supernatural creatures born of their presence among us. A thousand years ago Raziel bestowed on us the tools to accomplish this task. These tools are:
—The Mortal Instruments, by which we may know truth, speak with angels, and make more of our own kind
—The country of Idris, in which we may live safely away from both demons and the mundane world
—The Book of Raziel (or “Gray Book”), with which we may make use of the magic of angels to protect and augment ourselves
These were gifts given by Raziel to the first Nephilim, Jonathan Shadowhunter, and so after him we call ourselves Shadowhunters.

тнє ѕнα∂σωнυηтєя σαтн
There have been many versions of the oath that is spoken by new Nephilim when they drink from the Mortal Cup and join our ranks. The one currently in use was created a little more than a hundred years ago, as part of the reforms that swept through the Shadow World around that time. It replaced an older oath whose language was very martial in tone and that focused mostly on the fact that Shadowhunters are good at killing things. Typically at that time the oath was spoken in one of several holy languages—Latin, Sanskrit, Hebrew, et cetera—and thus was treated more as a formality to execute rather than words to listen to and reflect upon.
The oath follows. You should commit it to memory. At the time you are made a Shadowhunter, you will need to recite it without any prompting. Many new Shadowhunters have complained that this is an unnecessary burden, to which we respond that half-angelic soldiers against the dark forces of the world should not be fazed by the need to memorize a hundred words.
I hereby swear:
I will be Raziel’s Sword, extending his arm to strike down evil.
I will be Raziel’s Cup, offering my blood to our mission.
I will be Raziel’s Mirror; when my enemies behold me, let them see his face in mine.
I hereby promise:
I will serve with the angels’ courage.
I will serve the angels’ justice.
And I will serve with the angels’ mercy.
Until such time as I shall die, I will be Nephilim. I pledge myself in Covenant as a Nephilim, and I pledge my life and my family to the Clave of Idris.

ρєσρℓє αη∂ ρℓα¢єѕ
We are called Nephilim or Shadowhunters. We are the children of men and angels; the Angel Raziel gave us our power.
Our primary mission is to eliminate demons, who come in a large variety of species and forms. We also seek to keep the peace among several populations of demihumans, known collectively as Downworlders. These groups are werewolves, vampires, faeries, and warlocks. We preside over a treaty known as the Accords that ordains how we and all of these groups may interact, as well as each group’s rights, responsibilities, and restrictions. The Accords are revised and signed every fifteen years by representatives of the Nephilim and all Downworlder groups.
We have our own secret country, which is hidden in Central Europe and is known as Idris. Its capital city—indeed, its only city—is named Alicante, and that is where the Council resides, and where Clave meetings are held.
Most Shadowhunters spend their younger years as warriors. The exceptions are the members of our two monastic orders, the Silent Brothers and the Iron Sisters. The Brothers serve as our keepers of lore and knowledge: They are our librarians, our researchers, our medics. They reside in the Silent City, a place deep underground, many of whose levels are kept secret even from normal Shadowhunters. The Sisters design and forge our weapons; they are the keepers of adamas, the holy metal given by Raziel for our use. They reside in the Adamant Citadel, which is even more hidden than the Silent City; except for a single receiving chamber, it can be entered only by Iron Sisters.

¢ℓανє, ¢συη¢ιℓ, ¢σηѕυℓ, ¢σνєηαηт
The Clave is the collective name for the political body made up of all active Nephilim. All Shadowhunters that recognize the authority of Idris—and this should be all of them in the world who remain Shadowhunters—make up the Clave. When Shadowhunters reach adulthood at the age of eighteen, they declare their allegiance to the Clave and become full Clave members, with rights to contribute to any Clave issue under discussion. The Clave keeps and interprets the Law, and makes decisions about the guidance of the Nephilim through history as it unfolds.
The Council is the governing body of the Clave. Once, there were few enough Shadowhunters in the world that in matters of importance the entire Clave could be canvassed for their opinion, but it has been many hundreds of years since this was the case. The Council does, however, in representing the larger Clave, retain the power to recall any Shadowhunter to Idris at any time. Today local Enclaves choose representatives to sit on the Council, which deals with matters of immediate import that are not large enough for the entire Clave to become involved in. Enclaves may decide for themselves how to appoint their Council representatives. Most times this is accomplished with a simple vote or by the Conclave head appointing a chosen delegate; sometimes the Conclave head sits on the Council herself. Some regions have more colorful means of appointing their representative. For instance, in eighteenth-century France under the Sun King, the Council delegate was appointed by means of a dance competition. The Saint Petersburg Enclave to this day holds a massive annual chess tournament; the competitor who loses the most matches is named the Council delegate.
The Consul is the highest appointed official in the Clave. He is something like a prime minister rather than like a king or president; he wields little executive power but rather serves to preside over the Council, to officially tally its votes, and to help interpret the Law for the Clave. He also serves as an adviser to the Inquisitor, and is intended to be a consulting mentor for the heads of Institutes. His only real source of direct power is his authority to call the Council to session and to adjudicate disputes between Shadowhunters. The Nephilim do not have such uncivilized mundane notions as political parties; the Consul is voted into office by the Council and, like most prime ministers, can be put out of office by a vote of no confidence.
Tying all of these entities together is the Covenant, another name for Nephilim Law. It provides the rules of conduct for Shadowhunters and Downworlders; it is by the right of Covenant that the Nephilim enforce their Law in Downworld. (There have been times and places where that rule of Law has been held in place by force rather than by Covenant, but we happily live in more enlightened times today.) The Covenant protects the rights of Shadowhunters to enforce civilized relations among the Clave, Downworld, and the mundane world, and also protects the rights of Downworlders so that they may not be maltreated by Shadowhunters.

¢нσσѕιηg α ωєαρση
Shadowhunters do not use firearms, and typically we fight in close quarters. We also usually fight in short, improvised confrontations rather than in planned battles. As such, the basic armaments of the Shadowhunters are those hand-to-hand weapons that humans have used for thousands of years. Each of these come in endless variations, and you will need to tune your training to the specifics of your locale. Here we endeavor to lay out the categories of weapons and briefly discuss their pros and cons.
You should plan to quickly achieve a basic competence in each of these categories. Remember that demons are infinite in type and variety; a Shadowhunter never knows when she might face a foe against whom her preferred weapons are totally useless. You should, however, also give thought to what kind of weapon you might choose to specialize in. Some feel called to the longsword, while others will have a natural gift with a bow and arrow. Finding the intersection of your interest and your talent is a major goal of your early training.

ѕωσя∂ѕ
Swords are long hilted blades used to wound both by piercing and by slashing. Variants range from light and flexible blades wielded in one hand, such as the rapier, to heavy blades such as the Scottish claymore that require two hands to wield and whose blades may well be taller than a person. And more or less all possible stages in between are represented. Generally Shadowhunters have a preference for speed and agility in fighting, and so most who prefer swords specialize in one of the smaller one-handed versions. There are, of course, exceptions. Note that if you have never wielded a sword before, you may be surprised by how quickly your arm will grow tired, even when using a light blade. If you have never used a sword before, you can get an early start on training by practicing simply holding a sword out in front of your body, parallel to the ground, for a length of time. You will be ready to start actual combat training when you can keep the sword steady for thirty minutes.

кηινєѕ αη∂ ∂αggєяѕ
These smaller blades are less tiring to hold, and frequently two are wielded at the same time. The trade-off is, of course, that they have a shorter reach than a sword, requiring you to be closer to your foe. They are also far easier to conceal than a sword. Seraph blades are typically wielded using techniques associated with dagger fighting, so you will want to grow proficient with these weapons no matter what. You may also learn to throw knives and daggers, but it’s a very difficult skill to pick up, and daggers are usually more difficult and expensive to create than arrows, considering that you may lose them after a single use. Still, many Shadowhunters favor the throwing skill for its showy nature.

мα¢єѕ, αχєѕ, нαммєяѕ, єт¢.
Those who do not seek subtlety in their combat may wish to consider specializing in a weapon in these categories, whereby the enemy is simply bludgeoned with a heavy block of metal, possibly sharpened. You will come across few creatures that cannot be successfully defeated by the application of sufficient blunt trauma. The main advantage of these weapons is that, while one can learn finesse in wielding them, they tend to be effective even when that finesse is lacking. All the wielder requires is brute strength and room to swing.
The main disadvantages of these weapons are that, for one, they can be difficult to conceal, and for another, they depend on the enemy’s skin being less strong than the material of the weapon, which is usually true of Downworlders but may often be untrue of demons.
Flails and morning-stars, in which the aforementioned heavy chunk of metal is attached to the handle by a chain and thus can be swung around to build up more momentum, add more force to your blows in exchange for a higher risk of accidentally walloping yourself or the person standing next to you.

ρσℓєαямѕ, ριкєѕ, ѕρєαяѕ, ℓαη¢єѕ
There are almost as many variations on these as there have been human armies in history, but they all have the same basic structure: a sharp blade at the end of a long sturdy stick. Traditionally these have been used in mundane warfare to give a fighter a longer reach than normal—which can be useful when fighting a foe on horseback (or giant lizard-back, in the case of some demons), a demon covered in tentacles, a demon with obscenely long arms, and so on. Today, however, fighting from horseback is obsolescent, and the annoyance of carrying a sharp six-foot-long pole around is rarely worth the trouble. You are most likely to see these carried by Shadowhunter guards as ceremonial weapons; you are also likely to find that these guards have other weapons on their person that they would wield instead in case of action.

вσωѕ αη∂ ¢яσѕѕвσωѕ
These are the definitive Shadowhunter weapons for long-range fighting. They are lightweight and easy to carry, and you can bring a large number of arrows with you with little trouble. Often Shadowhunters will carry arrows with several different arrowhead materials, useful for fighting different kinds of creatures. (We recommended color-coding the feathers for ease in identification.)
Like sword fighting, archery is a complex and difficult skill, and you will need to train diligently to be able to use it in a real-life scenario. Shadowhunters almost never fire arrows from an entrenched stable position, like someone defending a castle from a siege. Expect to have to arm, aim, and fire your bow while in the middle of total chaos. Do not expect your archery instructor to let you take a bow with you into combat until you have demonstrated some serious skill.

ιмρяσνιѕє∂ ωєαρσηѕ
The Nephilim are trained in the use of weapons, and our weapons are a vital part of our combat methods. It is important to always remember, however, that a Shadowhunter without fighting weapons is not helpless. The fight against demons is a desperate one, and weapons can be improvised from the environment—a tree branch, an andiron, a handful of pebbles thrown in the face of a foe. Then too the Shadowhunter should always remember that her own body is a weapon. She has been trained to be faster and stronger than mundanes, and in the panic of battle should remember her strength and make use of it. A weapon does not win a battle; the Nephilim wielding the weapon does.

єχσтι¢ ωєαρσηѕ
There are, of course, as many nonstandard and exotic weapons as there are human cultures, and you may find that your local Nephilim have some combat specialties outside the common weapon types. These may include whips, sword canes, obscure weapons of martial arts traditions, household objects modified to double as blades, and so on. These rarer “specialty” weapons are not forbidden or discouraged from use. Indeed, a Shadowhunter is likely to be more effective with a weapon toward which they feel an affinity than with one forced into their hand by the dictates of training protocols.
Two specific exotic weapons are worthy of note here, one angelic, one demonic.
The aegis is a dagger that has been seethed and tempered in angel blood. They are incredibly rare, as one would imagine, since angel blood is not easily come by. There are only a small number of these in the hands of the Shadowhunters, and they are kept by the Iron Sisters and are not permitted to reside in an Institute. They are available for requisition in the armory, but the requestor should be prepared with a very good reason for the request. The Iron Sisters are not usually pleased to give them out.
The athame is a ceremonial, double-edged dagger, usually with a black handle and carved with demonic runes. It is used in demon-summoning rituals to draw blood or carve lines of magical force and is only for ritual use. The weapon loses its power if used in combat. It is one of the four elemental tools of the neo-pagan mundane religion Wicca; as such there are many false athame floating around. Warlocks can of course tell the difference on sight, but mundanes cannot. This can sometimes lead a mundane to accidentally possess a genuine athame, which is a great danger.

ѕєяαρн вℓα∂єѕ
There is a legend told of the first seraph blade, which may or may not be true. The legend dates to the earliest days of the Iron Sisters, when they were few in number and the Adamant Citadel was merely a single adamas forge and a set of protective wards. In those days the paths from the mundane world to the volcanic plains of the Citadel were not as hidden and guarded as they are now, and it is said that a demon, a Dragon—for in those days Dragon demons were not almost extinct—found its way to the location of the Citadel. There was only a single Sister there working at the forge, and she was caught unawares and unarmed, having placed her faith in the impossibility of the Sisters’ forge being found by the enemy.
Laughing and threatening, the Dragon stepped through lava beds as though skipping across shallow streams. In terror, the Sister cast about her for a weapon, but all she had to hand were irregular jags of adamas, recently extracted from ore and waiting to be worked. She seized one and held it between her and the approaching Dragon like a pikeman preparing to receive a charge. Her hand trembled; she was afraid not for her own life but for the continued existence of the Iron Sisters: If the demons could travel here, surely they would overrun the Citadel soon enough.
Panic-stricken, she called out prayers to the forces of good. As the Dragon was upon her, she loudly abjured it in the name of Michael, the slayer of Sammael, general of the armies of Heaven. Promptly the adamas jag lit up, blue and brilliant with heavenly fire. The Sister’s hand burned where she clutched it, but with all her strength she thrust her makeshift lance and pierced the Dragon in the soft flesh under his jaw. She expected it to wound the Dragon and nothing more—but perhaps it would buy her enough time to flee.
Instead the adamas spear bored through the neck of the Dragon as if through paper, and around the spear burst flames of seraphic fire. The Dragon screamed and burned, and as the Sister watched, the demon staggered away from her, damaged in a way she had never seen a demon damaged before. Across the lava moat surrounding the Adamant Forge, the Dragon was overcome, fell to the ground, and burned for an hour.
The Sister fell to her knees in exhaustion and watched the Dragon’s carcass slowly fade from the world. She could then have rested—no one would have blamed her—but she was an Iron Sister, and by the time her fellow Sisters found her a few hours later, she had deduced the nature of the power she had uncovered and had drawn up on vellum the first blueprints for the seraph blade.
Today seraph blades, or angel blades, are the fundamental weapon in Shadowhunter combat. They are as clear as glass, usually double-edged, and normally about two feet in length. Being adamas, they are incredibly finely honed and are capable of holding their edge indefinitely. They are thus potent weapons against any foe. Their true power, however, is revealed when they are named—when a Shadowhunter holds them and invokes the name of an angel. The spirit of that angel is said to then inhabit the blade for a time, and the weapon will glow brightly with heavenly fire, like the flaming sword of the angel who guards the Garden of Eden.
This heavenly fire is very potent against demons. Most demons can heal themselves from mundane injuries in our world fairly quickly, just as werewolves and vampires can. We Mark our mundane weapons to make them more potent, but even so, the best we can do with them is damage demons enough that they must retreat to lick their wounds, as it were. Only the seraph blade can permanently damage a demon, so that it must withdraw for more significant and lengthy healing or must return to the Void to repair itself.
After a time the power of an activated seraph blade will be exhausted, and it will need to be refreshed by the Iron Sisters in order to be used again. Depleted seraph blades can be brought to the weapons room of your local Institute for regular recycling.
Note that the seraph blade is a viable but drastically overpowered weapon in a fight against a mundane. Downworlders are harmed by them in much the same manner as demons, but mundane flesh pierced by a seraph blade will burst into flame and may consume the mundane entirely.
Shadowhunters will not be so burned by seraph blades, given our angelic blood, but even so, activated blades can severely burn the wielder’s hands, and you should not touch a seraph blade until you have been Marked with the rune of Angelic Power. (Typically this is placed either at the base of the throat or on the inside of each wrist.) A Shadowhunter who has been stabbed by a seraph blade will not burst into flames, but it should be remembered that seraph blades are still blades and can kill a Shadowhunter by more terrestrial means, like any other sword or dagger.

The stele (pronounced in English 'steh•lay) is listed here among the tools of the Shadowhunter but could just as easily be mentioned among weaponry; it is the fundamental tool of the Nephilim, the device by which Marks, our only magic, may be inscribed. An elaborate decorated stele is often the first tool given to a young Shadowhunter at the beginning of her studies.
The stele is a wandlike instrument, made of pure adamas. It is inert when not in use but when taken up glows and warms with the magic of the Marks. It is longer than modern writing instruments, usually a foot long or more, and as a result contemporary Shadowhunters will require practice to be able to draw runes with facility when using one.
All steles are functionally identical, but of course there is wide variation in their design. Many have handles inscribed with family crests and the like, some are studded with gems—the only requirement for a working stele is that it include an unbroken rod of adamas of at least a certain length. On the other end of the spectrum are the narrow practice steles given to child Nephilim to learn runic manuscription on sheets of parchment.
The first stele is believed to have been a rough oblong of adamas used by Jonathan Shadowhunter to inscribe the first Marks on his own skin. The stele designs have become refined over the years. Some scholars see a link between the stele and the Jewish yad, the ritual pointer used to avoid physically handling the parchment of the Torah when reading from it, but no direct connection can be made, although it is probable that the earliest Iron Sisters were inspired by such designs. Represent!
Demons are not harmed by exposure to a stele, but they will typically recoil from one, as they will recoil from all adamas.

ωιт¢нℓιgнт ѕтσηєѕ
One of the great secrets kept by the Iron Sisters is the precise manner by which adamas is extracted and purified from its ore. What we do know, however, is that the presence of adamas affects the rock from which it is extracted, and though it is simple rock, it gives off a pure white glow, as though reflecting the light inherent in the adamas. These “sister stones” of adamas are broken up and polished by Iron Sisters, and Marked to make their glow a property that can be turned on and off at the will of the Shadowhunter holding them. Most rune-stones are basic and interchangeable, and rarely do Shadowhunters get attached to a particular stone over any other. All Shadowhunters carry a witchlight stone, to remind them that light can be found even among the darkest shadows, and also to supply them with actual light when they are themselves literally among dark shadows.
The great advantage of witchlight stones is that their glow never fades or dissipates, for no fuel is being consumed in creating their light. Such a stone can, however, be destroyed by pulverizing it into dust, whereupon the angelic light absorbed into it will dissipate; thus one never finds “witchlight sand” or the like.
The largest single witchlight crystal in the world can be found in the Silent City in the form of the Angelic Colossus, a representation of the Triptych, the familiar motif of Raziel ascending from the water wielding the Mortal Instruments. The crystal stands roughly thirty feet tall, and it guards (and lights) the entrance to the Silent Brothers’ living quarters. The Colossus is rarely seen by anyone other than the Silent Brothers, however, and those interested in large installations of witchlight are encouraged to visit the Institute of Cluj, where the renowned Vampire Arch forms the threshold to the Institute. For many years it was thought that humans infected with vampirism were sensitive to natural and holy light and would recoil from it; the Arch was built under the belief that it would protect the Institute from infected humans. We now know this not to be true, but the Arch remains as a symbol of the Cluj Institute’s dedication to the Angel.

тнє ℓαω ιѕ нαя∂,
вυт ιт ιѕ тнє ℓαω

You have been immersed, quickly, in a whole world that is still beyond your reckoning. You’ve learned not just that there are intelligent magical creatures on Earth who are not purely human, but that there are many of them, and many who wear a human face. These people wield powerful magic and engage in powerful, sometimes violent feuds. You know of the Shadow World and what you will find there. Now we take up the question of how you should act there.
We Nephilim are, primarily in the Shadow World, the keepers of peace, and thus the keepers of the Law. The Law—our Covenant with Raziel—tells us what does and does not fall under our jurisdiction, how we may punish violations of the Law, and what rules we ourselves must obey in our interactions with mundanes, with Downworlders, and with one another.
The Law of the Nephilim is not a full code of conduct for Shadowhunters in all realms of their lives. First and foremost comes the injunction attributed to Jonathan Shadowhunter himself: “You are Man; serve Man; live among Man.” Though Idris may come with its own body of general laws, the Shadowhunters assigned all over the world are expected to live among the basic moral codes of their civilization. Our own Law is foremost in importance, but mundane law must be observed as well.

нσω тнє ℓαω Ⴣє¢тѕ: уσυ
• You must investigate any known instances of Covenant Law being violated. In fact, you are required to consider even rumors, urban legends, and folktales, to assess their credibility.
• You cannot reveal the Shadow World to mundanes. In fact, Raziel’s guidance is that as we protect and save mundanes they must not know they are being saved.
• Whenever possible, you must obey the mundane laws in the place where you live.
• You must never commit a crime against another Shadowhunter. These violations are punished much more harshly by the Clave than crimes against mundanes or Downworlders. This is not because of moral superiority, or because a Shadowhunter is a more valuable person than a non-Shadowhunter, but rather because we Nephilim are few and our lives short. To cause another Shadowhunter to come to harm is to benefit the demons who seek to destroy us.
Collaboration or collusion with the demons who seek to destroy us is considered treason and is usually a capital crime. Colluding with demons to bring direct harm to Shadowhunters would bring down the Clave’s harshest possible punishment, the end of that family’s existence among the Nephilim. The perpetrator’s Marks would be stripped and he would be made Forsaken, left to go insane and die. The rest of his family would merely have their Marks removed and be made mundane, removed from our ranks entirely.

нσω тнє ℓαω Ⴣє¢тѕ: ∂σωηωσяℓ∂єяѕ
Since the Accords, Downworlders have been subject to the Law of the Covenant, with their consent. Downworlders are meant to police themselves, with Shadowhunters interfering only in cases where problems are too severe, or where issues affect other parts of Downworld or the mundane world. Downworlders also have the right to conduct their internal business privately, without the interference or oversight of the Nephilim. For instance, we allow werewolves to fight to the death for control of their packs. We cannot protect these werewolves from possible interference from mundane law enforcement, but we also don’t consider these deaths to be murder under the Law.
A special exception here is the case of dark magic (see the Grimoire, Chapter 6). The practice of dark magic—necromancy, demon-summoning, magical torture, and so on—is strictly forbidden, and neither warlocks nor faeries are permitted to practice it. Exceptions are sometimes made for specific rituals done as part of a Shadowhunter investigation, but they are very rare.
яєραяαтισηѕ
Downworlders have the right under the Law to appeal to the Clave if they believe they have been mistreated by Shadowhunters, or believe that Shadowhunters have broken the Law in their dealings with them. They may request Reparations, monetary compensation for the harm brought to them. They may also call a trial, which will be administered by representatives of the Clave, and Reparations will be paid if the Downworlder can prove their case.
Mundanes also have the right to petition for Reparations, but obviously this comes up infrequently; only a few cases have been seen of mundane Reparations in the entire history of the Nephilim.
The Accords greatly improved the rights of Downworlders under the Law, and so the nature of Reparations changed significantly. Prior to the Accords, Downworlders had essentially no recourse or specific protection under Shadowhunter law; a Shadowhunter could kill a Downworlder under only the suspicion of wrongdoing, and all that could be done would be for a next of kin to file for Reparations. In the last hundred years claims for Reparations have decreased, now that Nephilim can be held legally responsible for abusing Downworlders whether or not someone comes forth to demand Reparations.
ѕρσιℓѕ

The term “spoils” refers to the taking of the possessions and wealth of a Downworlder as part of the punishment for a crime. Typically these spoils are forfeited to the Shadowhunter who has been wronged by the Downworlder. Or the spoils are forfeited to the Clave’s treasury if no specific Shadowhunter seems the proper recipient. In practice, however, Downworlders’ spoils have almost always ended up in the hands of individual Shadowhunter families. In fact, for many old wealthy Shadowhunter families, a goodly portion of their prosperity originates in spoils granted by the Clave.
The practice of taking spoils probably began very early in Nephilim history, but in isolated and informal ways. Spoils are first mentioned in official Clave Law around 1400, but records indicate that the Clave had been officially granting spoils in trials for years already. The awarding of spoils was no more or less popular than other forms of punishment, until the Hunts and the Schism of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries made the awarding of spoils the most common punishment doled out by the Clave. There were two reasons for this. The first was to legitimize and place some limits on the pillaging of Downworlder property that was happening regardless of Clave involvement; the second, which may seem counterintuitive, was to save Downworlders’ lives. In the existing frenzy of Downworlder persecution, which could easily have involved widespread murder, it was hoped that the promise of spoils would stay the Shadowhunters’ weapons in favor of the larger benefit to them of spoils. See, we had to steal their stuff to help them.
The practice of granting spoils lost some of its popularity with the end of the Hunts, but it was still the most common punishment for Downworlder offenses until the First Accords. For all of the language of philosophy and Law thrown about, much of the Shadowhunter opposition to the First Accords came down to economics. Those families strongly dependent on spoils for their wealth stood to lose quite a lot. They argued that the rules restricting spoils would harm the Clave directly. Although spoils were not technically taxed, it was considered virtuous for Shadowhunters, especially the wealthier families, to tithe a percentage of them to the Clave. The First Accords created the beginnings of complex legal language that did not eliminate spoils but strongly restricted the severity of the punishment, and also provided that the punishment of taking spoils from Downworlders could be executed only as part of an official sentence at a trial performed by the Clave. Many spoils have been returned in the past hundred years. Although, in cases where the family of the original owner could not be located, many other spoils have been placed on display in various Institutes, as historical curiosities.

нσω тнє ℓαω Ⴣє¢тѕ: мυη∂αηєѕ

Mundanes are not subject to Covenant Law. They are not signers of the Accords, and only a few in the world know of the existence of Shadowhunters or the Shadow World. Even mundane members of demonic cults cannot be prosecuted under the Law, since they are meddling with forces beyond their ken.
This is one of the most controversial parts of the Law. Every Accords proceeding has featured strident demands from both Shadowhunters and Downworlders that mundanes be held accountable for their behavior. These demands are always declined, for the simple reason that our charge to keep our world hidden from mundanes must be paramount.[/fancypost]

Part Five:

тнє ℓιƒє σƒ α ѕнα∂σωнυηтєя
Though Shadowhunters come from all corners of our world, we are Shadowhunters first, and citizens of our own ancestral homelands second. In the thousand years that we have existed, we have lived apart from mundanes, and the life of a Shadowhunter includes many features unique to us and our history. These are outlined here so that they may be recognized, and so that you may behave appropriately at times of celebration, struggle, and grief.
вιятн
The birth of a new Shadowhunter is an occasion for great celebration. We are not a numerous people, and we tend to die young; therefore any new young Shadowhunter is a cause for joy and delight. Births are normally presided over by Silent Brothers, who are able to use both their Marks and their knowledge of medicine to keep mother and child safe and healthy. As a result, we have always enjoyed a much higher rate of survival and healthiness in births than the mundane population.
When a Shadowhunter is born, it is traditional for a number of protective spells to be placed on the infant by an Iron Sister and a Silent Brother, representatives of their orders. (Usually the Silent Brother is the same person to have presided over the birth.) These are meant to strengthen the child, both physically and spiritually, in preparation for her first Marks later in life, and also to protect her from demonic influence and possession.
тяαιηιηg
Most new Shadowhunters want to know where they, or their children, will go to school. There is no such thing as a Shadowhunter school in the way mundanes use the term. Instead young Nephilim are tutored, either in their family homes or in small groups at their local Institutes. The training of new Shadowhunters is one of the responsibilities of all adult Shadowhunters, who are meant to share teaching duties, each from his own expertise. Parents are meant to lead the project of training their own children; orphaned Shadowhunters under the age of eighteen are the responsibility of the Clave, and will usually be sent to be raised and trained in their local Institute.
Shadowhunters (other than Silent Brothers) do not typically do scholarly work when young. What mundanes would think of as “higher education” is the kind of learning that we do in our older years, when we are no longer able to fight effectively or safely and we turn our minds to intensive, focused research and study.
мєη αη∂ ωσмєη ιη тяαιηιηg
Male and female Shadowhunter children receive identical training today, and are expected to reach the same standard of achievement in their educations. It has always been true that the Nephilim have included both men and women, but it is only recently that all women have been given full training as warriors. There have always been women warriors among us, but prior to 150 years ago or so, they were quite rare. Women were mostly, prior to that, keepers of Institutes, teachers, healers, and the like. Although the Laws officially preventing most women from becoming full Shadowhunter fighters were revoked in the mid-nineteenth century, it wasn’t until the mid-twentieth century that Clave women were given combat training as a matter of course from childhood, as Clave men always had been.
The women warriors of Nephilim past took Boadicea, the great warrior who led her people in revolt against imperial Rome, as their patron and model, and that tradition has continued to this day.
уσυя ƒιяѕт мαяк
Most Shadowhunters get their first Marks at twelve years of age. Since you, the reader, are likely to have entered the Nephilim from the mundane world, rather than being born into a Nephilim family, you may well be significantly older. This carries with it some inherent risks. It is usually considered ideal to get your first Marks when you are no younger than twelve, and no older than twenty, though there are exceptions. The older the person receiving the Mark, the greater the chance of a bad reaction.
Some things to keep in mind when receiving your first Mark:
• If there is going to be a problem, it is not going to happen immediately. If you react poorly to the influx of angelic power, Shadowhunters will be standing by ready to cut the skin, which will disrupt the Mark and stop the effect short. You’ll then receive full medical and magical attention.
• The act of inscribing Marks on skin creates a sensation that most describe as like an “icy burn.” This sensation will fade with time as your body grows accustomed to being Marked. The inscription of Marks also creates a scent in the air of something faintly burned. This scent will not fade with time. Do not be alarmed.
• Sometimes the newly Marked go into shock. The good news is, if this happens to you, you are unlikely to notice, because you will be in shock. Shadowhunters are trained to recognize shock along with other bad reactions to Marks and will treat you accordingly.
• In the next few days, especially if you are at high risk for side effects, you may experience such symptoms as screaming nightmares, night terrors, fear-driven bed-wetting, stark perceptions of the bottomless abyss of existence, restless arm syndrome, apocalyptic visions, acute illusory stigmata, and/or the ability to temporarily speak with animals. These reactions are normal and only temporary.
• If you are not absolutely sure that you are not a warlock, we implore you to be tested before being Marked. Families with the vagaries of faerie blood, or even with known werewolves in the lineage, should be fine, since the Nephilim power will overwhelm these.
αƒтєя уσυя ƒιяѕт мαяк
Congratulations! You have survived your first Mark. We can promise that each successive Mark is easier than the previous. Your eagerness to learn by returning to the Codex is commendable, but before you return to your studies, you should make sure that the Shadowhunter inscribing you confirms you are capable of work. You may find a need to sleep extensively; this too is normal.
gαιηιηg тнє ѕιgнт
Unless you are among those rare mundanes born with the Sight (see the Grimoire for details), you will need to learn to see through glamours. You may have started this process already. Usually, new adult Shadowhunters first receive a Voyance Mark, and several other temporary Marks that enhance magical vision. (We do not keep these Marks, because in the long term they impair normal vision.) You will then be shown glamours of various kinds and will be trained in seeing through them.

тнє тяα∂ιтιση σƒ тнє ραяαвαтαι

Whither thou goest, I will go;
Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried:
The Angel do so to me, and more also,

—The Oath of the Parabatai

The tradition of the parabatai goes back to the beginnings of the Shadowhunters; the first parabatai were Jonathan Shadowhunter himself and his companion, David. They in turn were inspired by their coincident namesakes, from the biblical tale of Jonathan and David:
“And it came to pass . . . , that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. . . . Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.”
—1 Samuel 18:1–3

Out of that tradition Jonathan Shadowhunter created the parabatai, and codified the ceremony into Law.
David the Silent was not at first a Silent Brother (See Excerpts from A History of the Nephilim, Appendix A, for more details). At first there were no Silent Brothers; earliest Nephilim hoped that their more difficult and mystical roles could be integrated into their warrior selves. Only as time passed did it become clear that the work of David would take him ever toward the angelic and farther and farther from his physical form. David and his followers set down their weapons, exchanging them for a life of mystical contemplation and the pursuit of wisdom.
Before this time, however, Jonathan and David fought side by side as the first parabatai. Tradition tells us that the ritual they performed, where they took of each other’s blood and spoke the words of the oath and inscribed the runes of binding upon each other, was the second-to-last time that David was known to shed human tears. The last time was the moment when the parabatai bond was broken, as David took the Marks that made him the first Silent Brother.
Today parabatai must be bonded in childhood; that is, before either has turned eighteen years old. They are not merely warriors who fight together; the oaths that newly made parabatai take in front of the Council include vows to lay down one’s life for the other, to travel where the other travels, and indeed, to be buried in the same place. The Marks of parabatai are then put upon them, which enable them to draw on each other’s strength in battle. They are able to sense each other’s life force; Shadowhunters who have lost their parabatai describe being able to feel the life leave their partner. In addition, Marks made by one parabatai upon another are stronger than other Marks, and there are Marks that only parabatai can use, because they draw on the partners’ doubled strength.
The only bond forbidden to the parabatai is the romantic bond. These bonded pairs must maintain the dignity of their warrior bond and must not allow it to transform into the earthly love we call Eros. The late Middle Ages were littered with Shadowhunter-troubadours’ songs of the forbidden love of parabatai pairs and the tragedies that befell them. The warnings are not merely of heartache and betrayal but of magical disaster, impossible to prevent, when parabatai become romantically linked.
Like the marriage bond, the parabatai bond is broken, normally, only by the death of one of the members of the partnership. The binding can also be cut in the rare occurrence that one of the partners becomes a Downworlder or a mundane. Per above, the bond dissolves naturally if one of the partners becomes a Silent Brother or Iron Sister: The Marks of transformation that new oblates take are among the most powerful that exist and overwhelm and dissolve the parabatai Marks of binding just as they overwhelm and dissolve more ordinary warrior’s Marks.
A Shadowhunter may choose only one parabatai in his lifetime and cannot perform the ritual more than once. Most Shadowhunters never have any parabatai at all; if you, newmade Nephilim, find yourself with one, consider it a great blessing.

мαяяιαgє
If you are already married, your spouse is very likely also becoming a Shadowhunter alongside you. If you are not married, when you someday do marry, you will do so as a Shadowhunter. Marriage is considered one of the sacred tasks of the Nephilim, both because the union strengthens the community and because it brings about more Nephilim.
Many hundreds of years ago aristocratic Shadowhunter families typically arranged marriages for their children in order to strengthen and mix family lines; in the modern age this practice is mostly extinct, and Shadowhunters choose their partners based on their own feelings of love and affection, as most mundane cultures today do.
Shadowhunters have always exchanged trinkets and tokens to mark marriages, to signify love and connection between the bride and the groom, mostly borrowing these cultures. Among Nephilim, marriage is consecrated officially by the exchange of Marks. On each participant a Mark is placed on the arm, and another over the heart. This tradition is believed to come from the Hebrew Bible, whose Song of Solomon reads:
Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave.
ιηтєямαяяιαgє
Shadowhunters are permitted to marry other Shadowhunters and, in most cases, Downworlders. (Since the Clave’s primary concern is the ability to birth more Shadowhunters, it is somewhat frowned upon to marry a warlock or a vampire, since they will have no children, but it is allowed.) Shadowhunters are not permitted to marry mundanes. They are, however, allowed to petition the Clave and ask that the mundane they wish to marry be allowed to become a Shadowhunter, in a process known as Ascension. (You may even be reading this Codex because you are yourself an Ascender!)
The Shadowhunter who wishes to marry a mundane applies for Ascension on behalf of his partner. For three months the Clave considers the petition, examining the history of the Shadowhunter who has applied, and his family, in addition to the background and nature of the possible Ascender. Of necessity this is all done without the knowledge of the Ascender; prior to the Clave’s decision in the affirmative, it remains illegal to tell the mundane applicant any details of the ways of the Nephilim. Once the Clave has granted the petition, the Ascender is told about her situation, and she embarks on three months’ study of Shadowhunter Law and culture. At the end of these three months, the Ascender is given to drink from the Mortal Cup and made a Nephilim; provided she survives this process, she is rendered a full Shadowhunter, with all the protections and rights of the Law that any Shadowhunter would have.

вαттℓє
There are many seasons of a Shadowhunter’s life, and many turns that life may take, but the core occupation of the Shadowhunter is, so to speak, the hunting of shadows. We are warriors, holy soldiers in a ceaseless battle, and while our adult lives include the same joys and sorrows as any mundane’s, the defining characteristic of our lives is that of fighting, of seeking demons invading our world and sending them, broken, back to theirs. It is the greatest honor for a Nephilim to die in combat with demons. Thus we say: Do not shirk from battle. Have faith, seek courage. A Shadowhunter who does not fight is not a complete Shadowhunter. (Unless that Shadowhunter is a Silent Brother or Iron Sister, of course.)
It is true, however, that many Shadowhunters put aside their weapons as they grow older, and seek a quieter life of study or research. But we do not do this until we have lived a full warrior’s life and are ready to put it aside with a feeling of completion.
тнσѕє ωнσ ℓєανє
Rarely, a Shadowhunter will choose to leave the Clave and enter the mundane world. There may be many reasons for this, but the Nephilim do not often look kindly on those who choose this path, whatever their reason. We are too few as it is, and we are meant to regard our status as Nephilim as a gift from Heaven and a divine calling, not as an accident of birth or a career path to be chosen or declined.
As such the Law is clear on the responsibilities of those who leave the Clave:
• They must sever all contact with Shadowhunters, even those of their own family who remain in the Clave. They must never so much as speak to Nephilim or be spoken to by them.
• In renouncing the Clave they also renounce the Clave’s obligation to offer them assistance in case of danger. They are not even afforded the protections given by Law to mundanes.
• Their children, even future children, remain Shadowhunters by blood and may be claimed by the Clave. Shadowhunter blood breeds true, and the children of Shadowhunters will be Shadowhunters, even if their parents have left, even if their Marks have been stripped.
• Every six years a representative of the Clave is sent to ask those children of ex-Shadowhunters if the children would like to leave their family and be raised among Shadowhunters in an Institute, as if they were orphans. Only when the child has turned eighteen does this practice end. (Those who reject the Nephilim into adulthood are not treated with the stigma of ex-Shadowhunters but have the same rights of protection as any mundane. The Clave has no wish to punish children for the crimes of their parents.)
• A Shadowhunter who has been turned into a Downworlder can no longer be Nephilim but should not be punished in the manner of those who chose to leave. In these cases the person gives up the protection owed him by the Clave for being a Shadowhunter but becomes newly entitled to the protection granted to Downworlders.

∂єαтн
Most Shadowhunters die as Shadowhunters. And most die in battle with demons.
We Nephilim burn our dead, discarding the fragile physical body that has trapped us and restricted us for our short human lives. Our remains are then interred. Those who die in Idris are traditionally entombed in its necropolis, outside Alicante’s walls. Those who die outside Idris are entombed in the Silent City. The Silent Brothers have responsibility over the dead in both locations. Most Shadowhunter families are old families and as a result have not merely grave plots but large family tombs and mausoleums, often one in each of the two necropolises.
Before being set on the funeral pyre, the Shadowhunter’s body is presented so that words of mourning can be spoken and those left behind can pay their last respects. Those in mourning traditionally wear white, and Mark themselves in red. The eyes of the dead Shadowhunter are bound with white silk, and he is laid to rest with his arms crossed over his chest, a seraph blade clutched in the right hand and resting over his heart. Funeral rites vary depending on the part of the world the Shadowhunter is from but traditionally conclude with a sentence from The Odes of Horace: Pulvis et umbra sumus. “We are dust and shadows.”

And Jonathan took his stele, the first stele, and slowly he drew a V, then another, then another, in a continuous line, VVVVV, from David’s upper lip to his bottom lip and back again. The stele was warm in his hand and left a fine indentation of crosshatch that remained even after the stele’s point was withdrawn.
Jonathan drew back, finished, and cocked his head at David, not sure if the Mark had taken.
David began to open his mouth to speak, and as he did, the lines on his mouth burned gold, and his lips caught just slightly open, held together by black threads, thin but strong. Jonathan stepped back and lifted the stele without thought, unsure. But the corners of David’s mouth turned up slightly in what he was now able to produce in lieu of a smile.
“Sir?” Jonathan said, his voice wavering.
It is good, Shadowhunter, David said abruptly in Jonathan’s mind. His voice was strong and calm and echoed in Jonathan’s head much more loudly than Jonathan would have expected. Now, David went on, lifting two fingers to his own face like a gesture of blessing. Now the eyes.
—From Jonathan and David in Idris, by Arnold Featherstone, 1970
The Silent Brothers are indeed our brothers—brothers to all Nephilim. Do not be frightened of them. Their appearance may be disconcerting, or even sickening, to you on first glance, but they are Nephilim, like you, and you fight on the same side, toward the same goals. (Most Shadowhunters get over their fear of Silent Brothers the first time they are injured in battle and the Brothers nurse them back to health.) It is worth noting that many Silent Brothers enjoy unsettling their fellow Nephilim, and deliberately play up their spookier features. This is a kind of hazing and should be taken as the good fun it is intended to be.
It is easy for new Nephilim to look upon the Silent Brothers as somehow more holy or angelic or powerful than the rest of us, but this is not in fact the case. The Silent Brothers rarely fight and lack any of the many combat runes that you will likely receive to enhance your physical and mental abilities. Instead they have taken Marks upon themselves that grant them access to the more esoteric corners of the Gray Book. They are our doctors, our scholars, our archivists. To them is given jurisdiction over the Nephilim dead. This of course includes those who rest in the Silent City, but the cemetery of Idris, too, is the Silent Brothers’ domain.
The Marks that the Silent Brothers use in their work are not so much forbidden to other Nephilim as hidden from our sight. In essence, parts of the Gray Book are locked and invisible to us, and the Marks the Brothers are inscribed with are the key. The Silent Brothers therefore have access to strange magic that you will not see performed by other Nephilim. In exchange for their special abilities, they have given up some of their humanity, moving farther from the Earth and closer to Heaven than the rest of us. They are still human, but their extraordinary nature makes them often disconcerting to us: They leave no footprints, do not cast shadows, do not move their mouths to speak, and do not sleep. Their bodies are tugged upward by Heaven, just as vampires’ bodies are tugged downward by Hell.
Befitting their seraphic alliance, the Silent Brothers are sometimes called the Grigori. The term refers to the Watchers, one of the higher orders of angels (the Watchers are the angels who are present in the trial of Nebuchadnezzar in the Hebrew Bible, for example), and is applied to the Silent Brothers not to claim their status as more heavenly than other Nephilim, but rather as a reference to their role among the Shadowhunters: watchers rather than fighters. The term has gone out of fashion and is considered archaic but can be found in many older Nephilim writings.
The official habit of the Silent Brothers is a parchment-colored, hooded robe, belted at the waist. Novice Silent Brothers will usually have plain robes, while those who have advanced to full Brotherhood will have decorative Marks circling the cuffs and hems of their robes, in bloodred ink. High-ranking Brothers are sometimes known to carry scepters; these scepters are usually pure silver and are also decorated with Marks, with the head carved in a figurative symbolic shape, such as an angel with outstretched wings, a chalice, or the hilt of a sword. Silent Brothers cast no shadows on the rare occasions they are found in the sun; this is widely believed to be an affectation, like the robe, rather than having some actual purpose.
The Silent Brothers must, by Law, have both their eyes and mouths shut with Marks. There are several different Marks that accomplish this, and the different processes vary, from magically stitching the eyes and mouth shut; to merely keeping the eyes and mouth permanently closed with the Mark of Fettering; to cleanly removing the eyes and/or mouth entirely, leaving blank spaces of flesh where they once were. The latter is, obviously, the most permanent and irreversible of these and is considered the most devout means of Marking oneself as a Silent Brother.
тнє ιяση ѕιѕтєяѕ
The Iron Sisters are a monastic order, like the Silent Brothers, the members of which have taken Marks upon themselves for a specific purpose that requires them to become more than merely human. In the case of the Sisters, however, they have taken upon themselves the ability to work the angelic stone adamas, and craft it and whatever other mundane materials are needed into the arms, armor, and tools that keep the Nephilim alive and protected. The Sisters are the only Nephilim permitted to handle adamas pur, unworked adamas.
Like the Brothers, the Iron Sisters must join the order by taking Marks upon themselves that act as keys to unlocking normally hidden sections of the Gray Book. These Marks also serve to distance them from the rest of humanity. (The Marks are different between the two orders, and being Marked as a Silent Brother does not give you access to the Iron Sisters’ Marks, nor vice versa.) Also like the Silent Brothers, the Iron Sisters are not fighters, do not marry, and do not normally attend Council meetings or venture outside of their usual domain.
Iron Sisters are rarely encountered by most Nephilim, but when they are, they are significantly less unsettling in appearance than the Silent Brothers. Their eyes and mouths are not magically closed, and they can neither read minds nor speak telepathically. They wear simple clothes, long white gowns bound tightly at the wrists and waist by demon-wire, to protect their clothes from the holy fires in which their materials are worked. Apart from an appearance of agelessness, their only odd physical feature is their eyes, which typically glow with the colors of flames. It is said that the fires of their great forges burn behind their eyes.
Despite their somewhat more familiar mien, the Iron Sisters are even more private and removed from Nephilim society than the Silent Brothers. They live in solitude in their great Adamant Citadel—whose location on the Earth is unknown to any other Nephilim—and rarely venture outside their fortress. They do not like to be bothered and prefer to work in isolation. A Shadowhunter may live many years without seeing even one Iron Sister in the flesh.
The first Iron Sister, Abigail Shadowhunter, was concerned that despite the gender neutrality of the Shadowhunters, the Sisters would need to be protected from unwanted interference from male Shadowhunters, and so the Adamant Citadel was built to be, and has always been, open only to female Shadowhunters. Indeed, only women are permitted to speak to Iron Sisters.

History:
When the Angel Raziel was summoned, he mixed his blood with that of Jonathan's within the Mortal Cup. Upon drinking from it, Jonathan became the first of the Nephilim. The Cup was left with him, and over time, more drank from the Cup; those who drank the Angel's blood became Shadowhunters, as did their children and their children's children.

Through the years, the cup has been used to create more Shadowhunters when their ranks were depleted, until it was believed to have been destroyed in the Fairchild manor in 1992, shortly after the Uprising.

Purpose:
Because of its mysterious transformative properties, drinking from the Cup turns mundanes into Shadowhunters. It is presumed that it became sacred and magical after Raziel used it as the vessel for his blood, imbuing it with his vast angelic power.

However, drinking from the Cup has its risks and does not always work. The Cup is most effective on children; in adults, it may either kill them or have no effect whatsoever. Because of this, only specially selected mundanes are allowed to drink from the Mortal Cup, since many never survive the transition. It takes special strength and resilience to survive the process, and because of this, the mundanes must be extensively tested and evaluated before they can drink from the cup and Ascend.

The Cup can also provide some protection and control over demons, though, in this respect, it is not as powerful as the demonically-aligned Mortal Sword.

A demonic counterpart of the Cup, the Infernal Cup was forged in 2007. Instead of angel blood, the Infernal Cup's ichor donor was the Greater Demon, Lilith, which gave it its demonic alliance. This gave the cup the power to turn Shadowhunters into their demonic counterparts.

Physical Description:
The Cup is a gilded, glassine chalice, carved from adamas and dipped in gold, and is the size of an ordinary wineglass, though heavier.

When Jocelyn drew the Ace of Cups of the tarot deck in which she hid the Cup, the golden Cup was held up by a hand in front of a rayed sun, though the Cup was adorned with rubies and smaller suns, unlike its true plain appearance.

History:
In 1878, the Sword was used on Charlotte Branwell and Benedict Lightwood during a trial. Charlotte later had Brother Enoch bring it to the London Institute to question Jessamine Lovelace.

In 2007, Clary Fray saw the Sword when she came to the Silent City.

Some weeks after, it was stolen by Valentine Morgenstern in his attack of the Silent City with the help of the Greater Demon Agramon, the evening before Jace's trial by the Sword. Valentine stole it for the Ritual of Infernal Conversion, which he was able to successfully perform, allowing him to build an army of demons to summon weeks later at Idris. He also used the Sword to kill Jace and summon Raziel.

The same year, the Sword was used to question Clary, Emma Carstairs, and the five younger Blackthorn children on separate occasions.

Purpose:
The Soul-Sword is primarily used to compel Nephilim to tell the truth, mostly during trials. Shadowhunters who wish to have their claims tested and proved may submit themselves to "trial by the Sword," during which a suitable judge, often a Silent Brother, sometimes the Consul or Inquisitor, wields the sword and places it in the hands of the deponent, where it adheres and cannot be removed until the judge wills it.

Downworlders and mundanes cannot be compelled by the Soul-Sword, thus preventing the Sword from becoming used by the Shadowhunters as a general tool for interrogation.

The Sword can also have a dark purpose, if intended. Originally, the alliance of the Soul-Sword is seraphic, its power drawn from Angel Raziel himself. However, Valentine Morgenstern discovered an ancient spell to reverse the alliance from angelic to demonic, through a process called the Ritual of Infernal Conversion, where the Sword is seethed until red-hot and cooled four times in the blood of Downworld children: a child of Lilith, a child of the moon, a child of the night, and a child of the fey. With its demonic alliance, the Sword can be used to summon demons and allows its bearer to have control over them.

Physical Description:
The Soul-Sword is kept by the Silent Brothers in the Silent City, hung on the wall above the Speaking Stars in the Silent Brothers' council chamber.

The Sword is an enormous silver sword, shaped like a typical arming sword from Jonathan Shadowhunter's period. It has a straight double-edged blade and a one-handed hilt, made of pure adamas, with an elaborate design of outspread wings, emerging from the point where blade meets handle.

According to Clary Fray, the Sword is agonizing to bear. Its weight and coldness, giving the holder a tingling sensation, as if hooks embed their hands onto the sword, contributes to the mental pain truth compulsion it triggers.

Prior to Jonathan Shadowhunter's encounter with Raziel at the lake, it was said to not be the glittering blue body of water of today, but instead a black roiling tear in the fabric of the world, through which demons passed back and forth freely.

For a long time, the whereabouts and information regarding the mirror remained a mystery for the Nephilim, although the Lake Lyn has always been a part of the original legend of the Mortal Instruments. Lake Lyn was said to be the lake from which Raziel rose, holding both his cup and his sword to be given to the new race of warriors he created. Since Raziel's summoning at the lake, it has been said to have been cursed.

Purpose:
It serves as the entrance into Idris through a Portal, which makes it necessary for a Shadowhunter to make their arrival known so someone can be at the other side to wait for them.

Ingesting the lake's waters can be poisonous to Nephilim, but it has no effect on Downworlders. Faeries have been known to drink from the lake, saying that it gives them true vision; for the Nephilim, the water causes hallucinations and may even drive them to madness.

Physical Description:

The Mortal Mirror, also known as the Mortal Glass, is in fact Lake Lyn in Idris. It is the third of the Mortal Instruments given by the Angel Raziel to Jonathan Shadowhunter, the first of the Nephilim.

History:
The Lightwoods, as such an old family, have a great deal of wealth and history. They have lived in London, Idris, and New York at different periods of time, often with high positions in the Clave.

Throughout history, the Lightwoods were known for their snobbish attitudes and disdain towards Downworlders and mundanes. Over time, however, they have become more tolerant and accepting of Downworlders.

In the 1800s, Benedict Lightwood from London brought shame to the family name when it was publicized that he had contracted demon pox, an illness only contracted from inappropriate relations with demons. It took years of good behavior from his sons, Gideon and Gabriel, before the family regained their honor.

Robert Lightwood, and his eventual wife, Maryse, were one of the first members of the Circle, a group of Shadowhunters brought together by their friend Valentine Morgenstern sworn to wipe out Downworlders and reform the Clave. While they were initially loyal to Valentine and the cause, they were turned after the failed Uprising and once again allied themselves with the Clave. The family, however, was exiled to New York.

While the typical unsympathetic behavior towards Downworlders continued briefly in Robert and Maryse' children, this changed by 2007, during which their children became friends with several Downworlders; the remaining siblings also settled into relationships with members of Downworld: Alec with the warlock Magnus Bane, and Isabelle with former vampire Simon Lewis. Also, as of 2008, a new Lightwood, parented by Robert and Maryse, has joined their ranks.

There are many members of the Fairchild family, and they have lived in an array of places over the generations. In the 1800s, they ran the London Institute, particularly by Granville and, later, his daughter, Charlotte, who went on to become the first female Consul.

Sometime later, a generation of Fairchilds moved to Idris, where Jocelyn Fairchild was born. While there, Jocelyn married Valentine Morgenstern and had a son, Jonathan. After the Uprising, for which Jocelyn was involved with from both sides, she left Idris and moved to New York, where she and her daughter Clary began living their lives as mundanes. As of 2008, Jocelyn and Clary still live in New York under the surname Fray—a portmanteau symbolizing the friendship between at least two generations of Fairchilds with the warlock Tessa Gray.

Known members:
Roderick Fairchild (?-?)
Granville Fairchild (?-?)
Callida Fairchild (?-?)
Charlotte Branwell (1854/1855-?)
Henry Branwell (1853/1854-?)
Charles Fairchild (1879-?)
Matthew Fairchild (1886-?)
Aloysius Fairchild (?-?)
Granville Fairchild II (?-1992)
Adele Fairchild (née Nightshade) (?-1992)
Valentine Morgenstern (1967/1968-2007)

Luke Graymark (1968/1969-)

Symbol:
The Fairchild family symbol is a pair of faerie wings, because the word "fair," from which the name is derived, is often used to refer to the Fair Folk. This is depicted on their silver family rings which has a pattern of faerie wings around the band.

The Penhallows live in a large house on Princewater Street in Alicante; aside from this, the family also owns a manor outside the city. In 2007, the Lightwoods stayed with the Penhallows in preparation for the signing of the Tenth Accords, before they moved out after the death of the youngest of the family, Max. The Lightwoods had briefly blamed the Penhallows for allowing the impostor "Sebastian" into their home. The same year, Jia was named Consul.

Different type of runes:

Alliance-Allows Shadowhunters and Downworlders to share each other's abilities, such as the Shadowhunters' fighting skills and a werewolf's strength.
Agility-A long-lived rune that equips the marked Nephilim with acuity not just of body, but also of mind. All Nephilim receive this rune early in their training, giving them the ability to process information quickly and to react.
Amissio-Slows blood loss and speeds natural blood replacement.
Angelic Power/Enkeli-All Nephilim receive this mark upon initiation and signifies their angelic bonds. It is also frequently applied to weapons to imbue them with angelic properties as well as wipe them clean of any demonic traces. This also prevents demons stabbed by the weapons from healing.

Binding-Creates a ring of fire-like handcuffs around someone's wrists and is used on criminals to bind their hands. Other binding runes can prevent one's legs from supporting their weight.
Courage in Combat-Provides those who wear it with bravery above and beyond that of a typical demon killer.

Deflect/Block-Fends off incoming blows. Although handy in fierce conflicts and quickly and easily applied, it is often impractical to use in the course of battle. It is most effective when applied on defensive structures. It must constantly be reapplied to be effective.

Destruction-Looks like an unfinished Opening Rune that was used by Clary to destroy Sebastian's apartment.
Dexteritas-Gives the Shadowhunter dexterity.
Equilibrium-Gives the wearer perfect balance; especially useful in hand-to-hand combat, this rune makes the Shadowhunter more difficult to knock off their feet. It is permanent and usually made upon the limbs.

Fearless-Makes the user afraid of nothing.

Fortitude-This rune provides a warrior with unshakable resolve, will, inner strength; the strength of mind that enables a Nephilim to encounter danger or bear pain or adversity with courage.

Fortis-Gives the Shadowhunter strength.
Friendship/Combine-A rune that partners two Shadowhunters together, so they can draw on each other's strength. This is the parabatai rune.

Heightened Speed-A mark that fades slowly over time, it enables the wearer to move at great speed when required, in any environment or condition.

Insight/Foresight-Supports mental acuity and inspired thought to better understand and interpret a situation or human being deeply. It provides the Nephilim the ability to better understand current and past events, as well as the ability to understand events yet to happen, based on current knowledge. This rune must be applied after each use.

Heal/Painless-Various healing and pain-killing runes that can heal grievous, possibly fatal wounds, enabling healing without causing harm or distress. While there are several forms of healing runes, the most basic is the iratze. This is the second rune gifted to the Nephilim by the Angel Raziel and the is also the second most powerful rune in Nephilim lexicography.

Mark of Cain-If someone tries to harm the person who bears the Mark of Cain, they will be harmed by a power seven times stronger than the one used to harm the bearer of the Mark of Cain. However, the Angel Raziel sees this as a mark that should be received from by God himself so he stripped Simon Lewis of the Mark.
Mendelin-This rune grants partial and temporary invisibility by casting a glamour over the wearer, allowing them to hide from mundanes and, in some cases, demons. The mendelin rune can also act as a healing rune, strengthening the victim's constitution.
Mnemosyne-The permanent memory rune that grants the Shadowhunter perfect photographic memory.

Necromancy-Brings back a deceased Shadowunter when drawn on their body. While it is not permanent and would fade over time, Clary meant to use it to let the deceased speak for a short time. However, the pain of having their soul forcefully pulled back to the world of the living would combine with the pain of their existing injuries, causing them immense pain, rendering them unable to speak. When the rune is destroyed, as Luke did with green acid, the resurrected dies once again.
Night Vision/Nyx-Allows the Shadowhunter to see in the dark.
Opening Marks-A rune with several variations that ensure that there are no mundane locks, in theory, is closed to Nephilim.
Loyal To-A permanent rune of loyalty first mentioned by Valentine Morgenstern. This binds the Shadowhunter to the person who marked them.

Precision-Gives the Nephilim the ability to perform tasks requiring a high degree of precision. When activated, the rune allows the Nephilim an intense focus, attention to detail, and the capacity to repeat tasks exactly. It also instills in its user extremely refined aim, typically of a weapon.
Quietude-Used by the Silent Brothers to silence themselves and placed on the back of the neck. Brother Enoch once used this rune on Jessamine Lovelace, and Valentine placed this upon Clary to silence her while he summoned Raziel.

Recall-A single use rune that allows the Nephilim to remember events that are otherwise hidden from their memory. While powerful enough to recall even distant childhood memories, it only allows the marked to recall events they themselves have experienced or witnessed.
Remembrance/Mourning-Marks that denote mourning. These marks, according to Tessa Gray, were red.

Sangliers-Blood-replacement rune used to transfer blood when the body needs it, but is extremely dangerous.
Soundless-A short-lived rune that allows a Shadowhunter to move about soundlessly as required to avoid detection.

Speak in Tongues-Allows marked Nephilim not only to speak and understand any language, but also allows Nephilim to communicate with one another in a way that demons cannot comprehend.

Stamina-Gives the marked Nephilim the capacity for standing fatigue or resisting disease. The powers granted by this rune are not a set duration, but rather they fade as the Nephilim draws on their power.

Strength-An incredibly short-lived rune that must be reapplied after each use, this mark gives the angelic warrior a short but intense burst of increased physical strength.
Thermis-Keeps the Shadowhunter warm.
Tracking Marks-Allows someone to track a person's whereabouts and, in some cases, see what the person is seeing, if one has a possession of the person being tracked. Often used by the Clave to track down criminals. Isabelle uses it to track Jace in City of Glass.
Vision-In the film, Clary drew this on her palm and froze demons in the air. A similar one drawn upside down is seen on Valentine's chest.

Voyance-Given to Shadowhunters at a young age, this rune focuses the Sight, giving the wearer extrasensory perception, allowing the Shadowhunter to see past glamour.

Wedded Union-A permanent mark made on the back of the hand of Shadowhunters, binding the pair in matrimony. Once the marks are made, the Nephilim are considered married.

June 12, 2026:
Malcolm Fade's Apartment
Los Angeles, California

Malcolm Fade, High Warlock of Los Angeles, sat at his desk, pin in hand, swiftly writing his message. Within seconds, the message was done. Snapping his fingers, it instantly evaporated into the air, sending ash and soot all over the place and then eventually out the open window that was above his work space, which had scattered papers and dozens of spell books, some open and others closed, on it. Once outside, it split and went into three different directions: One for Magnus Bane in New York, another for Tessa Gray, here in Los Angeles, and lastly the Los Angeles Institute, where the Blackthorns and Carstairs lived.
"God, please, let that message get to them in time." He whispered right as the door to his home busted open, sending chunks of splintered wood in every direction; demons of every shape and size spilled though the open canvas that was once his hand carved door.
Malcolm was to his feet in seconds, the childlike glee that normally filled his face gone, replaced with that of a seasoned Warlock. Without thought, he sent a fireball into the direction of the nearest demon, causing it to evaporate into a puff of black smoke.
This routine of killing went on for minutes, but Malcolm could feel his power becoming depleted. After another minute, his magic was almost entirely gone. When the last of his magic was gone, Malcolm closed his eyes in defeat.
"When it's your time to go, it's your time." He murmured, sensing as a demon jumped at him.
Tensing his shoulders, he waited for death to take him. After a few seconds of this, he opened his eyes. All the demons were gone, black marks from his flames visible. But, he wasn't entirely alone: Before him stood Selene Blackthorn, a smile on the verge of a smirk on her face, a note in her hands, and looking like some avenging Angel come to Earth with her glowing Seraph Blade and golden chakram in each of her hands.
"Got your message Mal, looks like I got here just in time. You're lucky I was at the Institute, since everyone else was out partying, it is a Saturday after all. Couldn't the demons pick a more appropriate time to attack you?"
Malcolm couldn't stop himself from laughing, even after everything that had happened.
"So, tell me, why was a horde of demons trying to kill you anyways Mal? You're like, the most loving person I know." Selene asked, throwing herself down onto his charred loveseat; not that she seemed to mind in the least.
Malcolm blushed at her words, "It's a long story, Selene."
"I've got nothing but time, Mal, and I'm already here, so you might as well tell me, or Arthur might decide to come down here himself and neither of us want that to happen."

At Arthur's name, Malcolm's body began to shake: He did not like that man. Not only did he mistreat his only child, but he also abused her in his own ways. Oh, he never hurt her, or even physically touched her: He mentally abused her. He'd even made her take on Jonathan Carstairs as a parabatai, sometime that nobody but him and Blaise knew. They all thought she had taken him on as her parabatai of her own freewill. Little did they know that when it came to Arthur Blackthorn, he was the one making all the decisions, no freewill was allowed when it came to his daughter.
After his mind had cleared, he sat down beside Selene and began his fable, "So, it all started when I was contacted by the Greater Demon Lilith this morning..."

June 14, 2026:
Downtown Hollywood-The Avalon
Los Angeles, California

Sweat covered bodies rubbed up together as the dubstep music blared though the loud speakers above the dancers heads. Lights flashed in time with the music, making faces visible one moment and than nothing but a black silhouette the next. Suddenly, the music stopped and the lights centered on the DJ, whom tonight just happened to be one Selene's best friends: Malcolm Fade.
His face flashed everyone a smile, one full of trust and love; it was the face of a child on a mans body that hadn't seen the darkness of the world. Only, it had. That Selene knew for certain.
His purple eyes, Mal's Warlock mark, seemed to draw everyone in as he began talking, "Alright party people, who's ready to get freaking freaky tonight here at The Avalon?!"
Screams and cheers erupted, and it took more than a few minutes for everyone to quiet down enough for Mal to continue, "Okay then, my lovelies! This next Mix goes out to my very special gal out there in the crowd tonight! You know who you are!"
At that, Mal once again threw himself into the music; this Mix even better than the last. Maybe because he had created this one for her? The thought brought blush to her cheeks. Soon, just like everyone else, Selene was dancing; body pressed up with five other people, just like those five people were each pressed up against five of their own. It was truly a spectacular thing.
Warlocks danced with Vampires who danced with Werewolfs who danced with the Faeries who lastly danced with the unsuspecting Humans. No other Shadowhunters were to be seen, but that didn't mean there wasn't any, just take Selene for example. Though she wasn't really trying to conceal herself like some of the other Shadowhunters did.
Selene wore her marks with pride, for all to see. She'd even wore a translucent top, the only thing hiding her breast from sight was a pink plaid bra underneath. A white plaid skirt, with pink lace panties, and black thigh length stockings with crystal clear Christian Louboutin high-heels completed the look. She did look quite fetching, or so she assumed by the hungry glanced the men and women sent her way.
Soon, the music hit its first beat and the room went wild, screams once more filling it. This went on for another hour and by then, even Selene was starting to feel the fatigue from hours upon hours of dancing next to sweat covered bodies. Plus, it had to be getting close to midnight, which was her curfew; what kind of Shadowhunter even had a curfew? It was wrong on so many levels. The best hunting was to be done at night, everyone knew that.
Suddenly, strong hands were planted on her exposed hips; hands of someone she didn't know. Soon, the owner of said hands also had his body pressed up to the backside of hers. Not that she was complaining, seeing as the guy seemed to have a nice body, at least from what Selene could feel of it.
But, soon, his closeness seemed to drain the heat from Selene's own body, which could mean only one thing: The man dancing with her was a vampire. This revaluation caused Selene's body to cramp up and stop moving all nothing; not that her dance partner seemed to mind, seeing as he continued to rub up on her backside. He had to know she was a Shadowhunter, so how in the world was she going to get away from this guy without causing a seen, when she didn't even know who he was?
For all Selene knew, he could be some uppity vampire with his pack waiting in the shadows to attack her if she even made the slightest aggressive movement. So, she decided to take the direct approach and just turn herself around in one swift movement, one that humans could only wish to accomplish. Beautiful blue eyes on the face of an even more handsome man met her own. The man looked to be around eighteen, but you never know with vampires; again, for all Selene knew, he could be over five hundred years old.
"Please take your hands off me, vampire," Her voice spewed the strongest of venom's, which seemed to take the vampire by surprise.
"As the lady Shadowhunter wishes."
It shocked her how easily he had let her go, moving onto the human girl behind them. Probably because he didn't want to make a scene with a Shadowhunter, with the signing of the Accords growing ever closer, only a few weeks away. At least it had worked to Selene's advantage of making him let her go, something she wasn't going to complain about.
With the vampire gone, the coldness inside Selene seemed to only grow, which meant it hadn't only been the vampire that Selene was sensing. Something dark was coming. And it would seem the other Downworlders, and even some humans, could sense the darkness as well.
Dancing soon stopped and Mal's song Mix hit it's climax, only, no one seemed to notice, seeing as no cheers erupted like at the beginning. It was as if they were all frozen in place, each and everyone of them waiting to see what happened next.
After a few more moments, the realization of what was happening hit Selene full force: Someone was using the combined power of everyone here to open a Portal, right on top of them. Only, this wasn't the good kind of Portal which Shadowhunters and warlocks used. This was a freaking Portal for bringing demons onto Earth, and not just a few, of no, the power of said Portal would bring hundreds, if not thousands of them.
As if coming to Selene's conclusion, Downworlders started screaming out, "Demon Portal!" and "Run for your lives!". The humans could only look on in confusion as said Downworlders started running, pushing others out of their way. The few humans who could sense what was going on started screaming and running as well, and soon, mass hysteria erupted, which only seemed to fuel the opening of the Portal more.
Trying to remember her Shadowhunter training, Selene pushed against the crowd of hysteric humans and Downworlders, doing her best to get to Mal, who was still planted inside he DJ booth. As she pushed against the title wave of people, Mal's eyes met her own. As she watched him, she saw his eyes fill with fear in recognition of what was happening.
Soon, Selene was at the DJ booth and Mal jumped down, her backpack in hand, and already explaining what was going on in fuller detail, "It's the same spell Lilith was wanting me to do, she most have found someone else to open the Portal. Someone very, very powerful."
"Crap, is there someway we can stop it?"

His eyes were full of dismay as he shook his head, confirming what she already assumed: The only thing they could do was try and get out of here before the crap hit the fan in a truly spectacular way. Taking her bag from him, Selene opened it and took her stele and Seraph Blade out. They would be getting out of here one way or another.
"Alright Mal, lets get the hell out of here before the onslaught of the demons from hell get us."
Offering him her hand, Mal took it and together they ran towards the nearest wall, "Can you get us out of here by taking out this wall, Mal?"
But, just as Selene asked, white smoke began to feel the room. With the mist came the smell of death. They were already too late; the demons were coming through the Portal.
"Hellmist," Selene whispered to Mal, just as the first of the demons began to appear, moving in dark silhouettes inside the now mist filled room.
Since Mal's magic was now muted, Selene took the stele and began to draw an opening rune on the brick wall. Screams started to fill the rooms as the demons went to work, eating and consuming whatever they touched. Destroying whatever they couldn't eat.
Once it was finished, Selene put the stele back in the backpack that was now slung over her shoulder. Within seconds the wall was gone, replaced with nothing but the streetlights outside. Now Selene and Mal only had to get a message sent out to the Los Angeles Institute and all available Shadowhunters about what was happening in downtown Hollywood, before it was too late to even do anything about it.
"Do you think you can get a message sent out now that we're out of the Hellmist, Mal?"
Mal nodded and took out a sheet of paper, scribbling almost illegible words on it. Once finished, Mal threw the paper into the air, where it exploded into a puff of smoke and ash and soot, separating in a hundred different directions. It must have taken an immense amount of magic to send that many messages out at the same time.
Message sent, Selene once again took Mal's hand in her own, "That's the best we can do Mal, we need to get somewhere safe now and await for the reinforcements to arrive and assist us with this mess."
"Alright Selene, but it has to be somewhere close, the message I sent told everyone that I would be opening a Portal nearby, a large one at that. Every Shadowhunter in North America that answers our call and has a warlock on hand will be coming here soon."

Selene's eyes widened at Mal's words, that had to be a large number of Shadowhunters, seeing as many now worked closely with warlocks on a daily bases. It would seem a party was about to begin, and not a good one. Whatever happened tonight was going to be bloody.
"Lets get that freaking Portal opened then, Mal. It would seem I'm going too get to see some old friends after all, before the Accords even get started."
And so, together with the help of the Alliance rune created by Clary Fray, now Clary Herondale, the two of them opened a Portal big enough to rival even that of the Demon Portal that had, only moments ago, been opened.

New York was a dreary place, sometimes. The apartment he owned--sort of--with his human roommate, was modern and had a nice view of the city, with large glass exterior walls he could look through and wish he were down there, well, this apartment was nice, and it even had begun to feel like home, but it was dreadfully boring. His pen scratched at the paper, tongue between his teeth, and finally, after another try, he crumpled the sheet and tossed it.

"Ey, Blaise--I'm going to go get some food, yeah?" His roomie called, and the Lightwood shrugged. "Yeah, uh, sure. Get me some ramen." He called after the disappearing jacket, then sighed, leaning back. He could always study, hm?
Well, that was a load of crap. He was bored, and he wanted to talk to Selene. Maybe they could skype, though he got the feeling she was busy--he remembered her loving that one nightclub, and she probably was there.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
i have no idea how to get them to the portal, etc. so I shall just have them emerging through c:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Blaise was breathing hard, through the portal not long after other Shadowhunters began to. "Selene!" He called, running over to his Parabatai, glancing up at Mal and nodding quickly. "Wh--who else did you call for?" He asked.

June 14, 2026:
Downtown Hollywood-Some Abandoned Building
Los Angeles, California

Soon, the first of the Shadowhunters began coming through Selene and Mal's Portal, as well as the warlocks that had helped them accomplish this. It was truly a display of how much Shadowhunters had grown in the past eighteen years. Even some vampires and werewolf's had come along to help.
The first actual werewolf pack to come through the Portal was the Mexico City pack, which came with the Rosales's, who lead the Mexico City Institute. Of the three Rosales left, the two youngest, Jaime and Diego Rosales, had came though the Portal with the High Warlock of Mexico City, Seskel Grove.
Seskel's warlock mark was plain enough: Her purple tented skin. Which, frankly, must be a pain to glamour from the mundanes 24/7. Something she, herself, would never want to go though.
Turning her attention to the two Rosales men, Diego drew her eyes the most. When he looked over, Selene quickly turned herself back towards to the Portal. More Shadowhunters were coming through already, this time from Oklahoma and Texas, as well as Montana.
Next to come though the Portal was a few of her family from the Los Angeles Institute: Arthur, her father, and Octavian, her youngest cousin, who was around four years older than her. Where the others were, Selene had no idea; most likely guarding the Institute for if the demons tried to attack while no one was there.
Arthur's eyes met Selene's, and his instantly went dark with unhappiness. Thank God she'd changed into her Shadowhunter gear before opening the Portal with Mal. If he'd seen Selene in the clothing she'd been in, he would never let her leave the Institute again.
Still, even now, the black leather armor that covered her was a size too small, hugging and showing off her plump breast. Chakrams were all over her: Around her wrists, clasped in her hair, which forced it into a severe bun atop her skull, as well as latched to her belt. She was a walking weapon, literally.
Not that other Shadowhunters here didn't do the same, but seeing as Selene was his daughter, Arthur would most likely try and figure some fault in her demeanor.
But, before he could start in on her, Alexander, Elizabeth, and Jonathan Carstairs, as well as Luke Graymark with his wolf pack and the High Warlock of New York, Magnus Bane, came though the Portal; which meant that those from New York had arrived, making Selene's heart soar with anticipation. She so hoped that Blaise had came with them and hadn't stayed to guard the Institute.
As if reading her thoughts, Blaise came through the Portal, seeming to be out of breath. It would seem he didn't use the Portal as much as some. Which also meant it must have been a long journey from one side of the United States to the other for him.
When he came running over to Selene, calling her name, more than a few Shadowhunters smirked at them. She was taken aback by the looks, surprised by how fast they were to assume things. If only they knew the real truth between the two of them, than those looks would do a total one eighty.
At Blaise's question, Selene pursed her lips in dismay, "Every available Shadowhunter will be coming. What's going on now would be the equivalent of a DEFCON 1, at least by Shadowhunter standers." Pausing for a moment, she waited for him to absorb this information, and than continued, "Someone very strong opened a Demon Portal right on top of The Avalon, roughly a thousand demons have breached the area. What Downworlders and Shadowhunters were here to begin with are doing their best to keep the demons from leaving the immediate area. Our estimates are that anywhere from fifty to a hundred mundanes have been killed, along with about fifteen Downworlders. No Shadowhunter deaths have been reported yet, but that doesn't mean there hasn't been any. Also, we are unsure as of yet if any Greater Demon came though the Portal."
Selene's voice was that of a seasoned General, reporting a bit of information to her Lieutenant general. But she couldn't help the softness that filled her eyes. Hopefully he could see the love and friendship in them.
"Alright! Everyone!" Selene said, clapping her hands repeatedly, "Please come over here. Mal, feel free to close the Portal for now."
Mal nodded his head and closed the Portal, causing him to drop to his knees in exhaustion; the Alliance rune soon evaporated from their hands, now depleted. Selene put her hand on his shoulder, which he covered with his own. The two of them were as close together as she was with her parabatais.
When all the Shadowhunters and Downworlders were to where she, Mal, and Blaise were standing, Selene once more began speaking to them, counting everyone as she did, "So, as we all know, their has been a breech of epic proportions." Five hundred eyes stared at her as she spoke, "Somewhere around a thousand demons, or so we assume, are out on the streets of Downtown Hollywood. God only knows what damage has already been done. As always, before heading out, each Shadowhunter will be paired with a Downworlder. Pick your partners for tonight quickly, we'll be heading out soon."
Everyone nodded and dispersed, trying to find a partner. There were plenty of Downworlders to chose from for the Shadowhunters, seeing as the Downworlders outnumbered them 5:1. Werewolf's and vampires were often a popular choice, because of their superb strength, speed, and agility. Most Shadowhunters didn't appreciate the advantages of choosing a warlock partner, which was a mistake; seeing as it increased the warlocks magical ability tenfold. There loss, Selene supposed.
Finally, when it was just Selene, Mal, and Blaise, she put her hand on Blaise's shoulder; much like how she'd done with Mal only moments ago, "How have you been, Blaise? How's that annoying, mundane, roommate of yours I'm so fond of?" Selene's voice was soft as she asked him this, they didn't talk nearly enough nowadays; with him leaving the Institute to live on his own, and her constantly being out, hunting demons alone, which often displeased him, or sometimes with Jonathan or Mal. Though, ninety percent of the time it was only her; that's how Selene liked it. Being alone allowed her to feel totally free and at peace.
Waiting for his response, Selene called over Magnus and Seskel and asked, "Do you two think you can reopen the Portal? More Shadowhunters might still be trying to come though, and Mal is much too weak at the moment to opening it again."
When they nodded and began walking away, Selene heard a bit of someones conversation from behind her, which just happened to be from Jaime and Diego Rosales, "-only seventeen and she's acting like a leader. I see big things in her future."
If only they knew just how wrong they'd be in said near future.

Blaise was entirely enthralled by the way she spoke, clear cut and business-like, and he stood back, arms akimbo as he took in the news. It was bad. Very bad, but considering how many demons there were, the death toll could be much, much higher, and that meant the shadowhunters were doing their job.
Never being one to take charge, at least, not in matters like these, he didn't speak, but instead stepped back as the others strode over, to receive his parabatai's orders like the others would. He'd seen the looks of some other shadowhunters, and didn't return them, as it was none of their business. Especially not now. He watched Mal with some concern, and then returned his brown gaze to Selene.

He had been about to go and, like the others, find a downworlder he, preferably, knew and trusted, but was stopped by Selene, who of all things, questioned after the health of his roomy. "...He's fine. Well, a bit overtired lately; school stuff." He smiled at her, his own tone quiet and somber. He glanced up as Magnus came over, and Seskel, then back to her, though his eyes flicked towards thoes speaking of Selene. "Did you hear that? " He paused. "Well, I guess I'll go find a...wolf, or something." He knew they couldn't very well go off together--not being parabatai, or anything, of course, as far as others knew, it would be frankly a bit suspicious, and they couldn't afford that.

Magnus strode over to Selene, shoes clicking quietly, his eyes narrowed. "Of course, Selene." He smiled, and turned swiftly, waving for Seksel to follow--who was, of course, and the two set to work.

Selene breathed a sigh of relief as Magnus and Seksel once more opened the Portal. At least now any Shadowhunters that were lagging behind would still be able to come and help. And the more Shadowhunters that came to assist, the less likely this would turn into a major bloodbath; for their side at least.
But, watching Blaise find a partner other than herself pulled at Selene's heartstrings, "Good luck and stay safe, Blaise." She murmured.
While she was watching Blaise, Jonathan came up behind her, "So, how's my lovely parabatai tonight?"
Selene simply shrugged and turned around so that they were face to face, her stele in hand. Even if she hadn't wanted him as her parabatai, the least she could do was mark him and give him a better fighting chance, something she couldn't do for Blaise in such a crowded area. Maybe Selene would be able to mark him once they'd gotten outside.
"Oh, come on, say something Selene. Did you at least miss me?"
"Maybe, maybe not. You'll have to come up with that answer yourself, Jonathan."

In a way, she did miss him, yet didn't. When he was gone, Selene felt a since of freedom. When he wasn't, Jonathan normally wanted her to follow him around like an obedient puppy, which Selene wasn't.
Leaning forward, Selene named each rune as she drew it, "Courage, Fortis, Speed and Strength."
Once done, she looked up at Jonathan and smiled, handing him her stele, "My turn?"
"Of course, my parabatai." The way he said "parabatai" always sent chills down her spine, and not in a good way.
When Jonathan was finally done drawing the runes, Selene pulled away from him, took her stele back and stood up. Not looking back at him, she walked over to Mal. Hopefully his magic was almost replenished.
"How are you doing, Mal? Is your magic almost back?"
To her question, Mal nodded, holding up his hand for her. Gently, Selene put her hand in his and began drawing the Alliance Rune once again. His hands were soft, smooth and warm, something that surprised her.
Not that Selene didn't have soft or smooth hands, she always did her best to moisturize and file her nails, but for a man to have such soft hands was almost unnerving. It was surprising she'd never noticed it before. There was a lot of things Selene didn't seem to notice about Mal; like the way his eyes would often linger on her and how his smile would brighten even more when she entered the room.
When the rune was done, Selene gave him a large smile and looked around, watching as the Shadowhunters and Downworlders applied the Alliance Rune to their partners. Blaise seemed to be applying the rune to a werewolf, which made her smile. It would seem that he, just like many other Shadowhunters, thought that werewolf's made the perfect partners.
Taking a step forwards, Selene almost tumbled to the ground as the building began shaking and moving. Shadowhunters and Downwolders looked at each other in dismay and confusion. Whatever was going on couldn't be good.
Right as Selene opened her mouth to say something, one of the side walls suddenly exploded, sending concrete debris everywhere. Dust and smoke spread throughout the room and the sounds of groans did as well. It took more than a few moments for Selene to recompose herself.
When she did, the first thing Selene noticed was the Hellmist that was quickly filling the room. The next thing she noticed was the headless body of the person next to her. She could see the base of his spine, hot blood still squirting in every which direction.
Selene felt the bile building up inside her throat. She had seen many things since becoming an active Shadowhunter, but never a headless corpse before. It was disgusting.
"Malcolm, Blaise, Jonathan?!" She screamed, trying to draw theirs or anyone else's attention.
Before any of them could answer her, strong hands pulled her up and Selene came face to face with possibly the most beautiful person ever. Black wings protruded from his back and a smirk was plastered onto his face. His eyes were black and bottomless, ageless and dangerous: They were the eyes of a ruthless murderer.
"Hello, young Shadowhunter, It's a pleasure to make the acquaintance of one of the vessels of Uriel. My name is Sammael, and I hope you and every other Shadowhunter and Downworlder here is ready to die a very painful death."
Before the scream could escape her lips, strong hands wrapped themselves around Selene's neck and slowly began strangling the life out of her.

He caught her words, and turned to flash a roguish grin, before quickly finding a werewolf. Yes, he chose a wolf, like so many others, but this werewolf was 6'5'' and he couldn't really find fault with partnering with the Hulk. After runes were exchanged, he turned once more to find Selene in his gaze, when--he pitched forward, shocked by the sudden motion and coughing violently as dust made its way into his lungs, the werewolf helping him up, and then he heard her scream, and, running as best he could, stopped short, seeing the demon that grasped his parabatai. Heart racing, he felt a chill over his body, and before his mind had time to think, to form a plan or a strategem of any kind, he raced forward, unconsciously grateful for the runes the werewolf had only just placed, giving him the strength to reach Selene and Sammael so quickly, the Seraph blade flashing as he jumped, slashing at the demon in an attempt to release Selene from the deadly grasp.

The City of Pandemonium

The city of Pandemonium was laid out before Sammael, its magnificent buildings and towers were a testament to what he and the other Greater Demons had created in their time since inhabiting it. It was a place for demon kind to come and rest after being destroyed on Earth and reforming once again inside The Void. Demons could use their true forms without fear of being killed. Not that demons didn't kill each other though; they were, after all, demons.
Music played from a magical device called an "iPhone 6", that was connected with something called a "Dock". Human technology was truly a wonder; it was almost depressing that they would be destroyed one day. Suddenly, the Greater Demon, whom called herself Taylor Swift, began singing their beautiful demonic messages.
"Taylor Swift makes quite the Greater Demon, do you not think so, Lilith? She seems to have the human race wrapped around her demonic fingers, which is a magnificent thing. Her newest "album" called "1989" is very ingenious."
To this question, the sound of flesh meeting flesh made him turn around; Lilith was hitting her forehead in something called a "Facepalm" again, she seemed to do it very often as of late, "How many times must I tell you, Sammael, Taylor Swift is not a Greater Demon, or even a demon at all!"
"Well, she should be."

Lilith once more "Facepalmed" herself, "Seriously, Sammael?"
Ignoring her, Sammael began speaking again, "You know what we need, Lilith? "Wikipedia"! Except we can call it "Demonpedia", and we'll have to "copyright" it, of course!"
"For Satan's sake, Sammael! Do you even know what you're talking about?!"

"Oh, do shut up women and let me think!" Sammael said as he took out a piece of paper and pin and began writing things down and reading them aloud as he did, "Alright, so, Demonpedia, hellPhone 6, and make Taylor Swift into a Greater Demon once we get to Earth! Quite the list, don't you think, Lilith?"
Lilith's voice was full of annoyance as she said, "Please, Sammael! You're making yourself look like an idiot, stop talking about things you don't understand!"
The pin in his hand snapped in two, spilling ink all over the paper that was in front of him. Slowly, he turned around and stared at Lilith, his eyes cold as death and bottomless in their fury. Fear filled Lilith's beautiful face as she realized what she'd said.
"Sammael, I'm sorry, I meant no disrespect!"
Before she could even blink, Sammael was before Lilith, her neck in the palms of his hand, "Since it would seem you only wish to speak business with me, Lilith, please do tell me how the Portal that will get me and my armies to Earth is going and do speak quickly, for I find myself short of temper as of the moment."
"All I need to do is find a powerful enough warlock to open up the Portal and everything that we have planned will be set into motion." Lilith's voice was very calm, for she knew that Sammael wouldn't kill her while she was still needed.
"Good, I want the Portal opened within the year then, I grow tired of this place and wish to have human blood on my hands once more." At that, he let Lilith go; the air that rushed into her lungs was audible.
Dropping to her knees, as a sign of respect, Lilith said, "It will be done, Lord Sammael."

The Portal before Sammael opened, sending magnificent light spilling though. Demons flinched away from it in fear, for light was a demons worst enemy. But, Sammael did not cower in fear before the light, for soon this world would be his, and just like with Uriel, he would kill each and every Archangel that opposed what he believed in, starting with Michael and Raziel.
