  • I'll help! *shreds dead Dustyfoot's ears* And here's the next chapter of my story!

    "Breeze! Breeze!"

Breeze awoke to find Ribbon tapping him with her paw. "Breeze! There's Twoleg kits! Two of them! Ones I don't know!" she mewed. "What if they find us? They might not be nice!"
Breeze purred with laughter. "It's okay, Ribbon," he reassured his mate. "Twolegs come here all the time. They never bother me."
"Well, all right, if you're sure they'll leave us alone," Ribbon mewed doubtfully. She padded out of the den, brushing against the bush, and making the bell on her collar jingle. One of the Twolegs made a noise, and they both ran towards the cats.
"Oh no!" Ribbon mewed, frightened. "You said they wouldn't bother us!" She turned and ran back into the den.
"You stay in there! I'll handle this!" Breeze mewed over his shoulder, then turned towards the Twolegs. One of them made another noise and held its paw towards him. He arched his back and hissed, and they backed away. He started padding toward them, still hissing, and they ran away, wailing.
"It's okay, Ribbon! You can come out! They're gone!" he called. Ribbon crept out of the bush, looking around nervously. When she saw the Twolegs were gone, she stared admiringly at Breeze. "How did you do that?" she mewed.
"Ribbon, they were kits. They got scared when I hissed and ran away," Breeze explained.
"Well, you were still very brave," Ribbon insisted.
Breeze purred with laughter. "I'm not going to argue with that very much," he mewed. "Come on, I'll teach you how to hunt." He padded across the park, sniffing the air, with Ribbon following close behind him.

  • I don't blame you for not reading. It messes with your head. ??? There are commentaries. Click on the number underneath the title. They're on the same line as the genre.

  • K. Here's my next part to my story.

Everything’s white. Now black. White again. Black again. The colors are spinning back and forth so rapidly they eventually become a muddled grey. The color spiraled and melded, molding into objects before liquefying. It appeared so alive, so real, yet untouchable. One could not touch it, merely float or wade through it. Then it began to clear, as though being sucked through a straw or oozing over the side of the bowl called unconsciousness.
Slowly, the bowl rocks back and forth, gently sloshing the contents of itself over the edge. Back and forth it goes, giving a new meaning to the phrase ‘Don’t rock the boat’. It begins to spin in circular motions, forming what could only be labeled as a whirlpool. In the center of that whirlpool is a beast. It is sucked under, only to be spit out over the edge of the bowl.
“Get up Stain! Come on, man!”
Rich blue eyes without a violet swirl pop open and adjust to the steady stream of light pouring in. ‘Ah, so I slept ‘till noon again? Kind of figured, what with last night… Anyway, what could Carrot possibly want? I mean, I was catching up on my beauty sleep, not that I need it because I’m awesome.’ My jaws open without my brain’s consent and I releaser a huge yawn.
“What do you want Carrot? I was catching some shut eye before my training session with Jack.”
“Session’s cancelled man. Rat said so. Also said we’re supposed to be getting a new member today.”
I snort at this. I mean, come on. Rat lies about everything. If I had a rat for every time he lied (No pun intended.)…
“You really believe him? You know how Rat stretches the truth. I highly doubt that we’re getting a new member.”
“Yeah, but if we do have a new member, who do you think will show them around and whatnot?”
“Not me, that’s for sure. I don’t need someone tagging along with me.”
“But what if it’s a girl?” He just didn’t know when to quit, did he?
“I don’t care. Leave me out of this. I want to go to sleep before my lesson. Rat’s lying, like always.” I force down a growl of annoyance as I shift into my spot on the grass. I spend so much time in this position the grass actually grows this way now. Ah, I love this spot. Just the right place to get a bit of shade and yet still have some sun.
“Attention. New member entering the grounds. New member entering the grounds. Please report to the cherry tree.” So much for a nap. Oh, well it’s a dead coyote walking. It won’t last simply being around us, let alone a solo mission. Might as well see what the ruckus is over this new member.
I trot over, casually glancing around the enclosure. The sky looks clear and there’s a bit of breeze that’s been going for the past ten minutes. It’s not going to rain later today. Hmm, good thing, I don’t feel like being forced into a kennel tonight. The cherry blossoms are going to be blooming soon. I’ll have to start getting up earlier to watch when they open.
I glance down at the trunk and freeze. Wow, Rat and Carrot were right about her. The new member is a female and she is very pretty. Her fur is as dark as midnight sky, and it appears softer than pup down. Her eyes are an odd color of yellow, an unlikely contrast to her fur. Hmmm, maybe this member is worth keeping…
I blink and slip my trademark smile onto my face. Such a pretty face should be mine. I trot over where she glances at me again, before rolling her eyes. What, am I not the essence of charm? Well, guess I’ll just have to try a different approach. After all, she seems to be a unique being.
“Well, as I just announced, we have a new member. Her name is Night, and will be our, ‘apprentice’, so to speak until fall. So, anyone willing to help with training her?”
Jack fills us in as usual. He glances around our small group a few times before settling his eyes on me. I twitch an ear and he blinks back. See, we’ve formed a secret code, so to speak. When I first came here, I was never much for words, so he decided to form a way of getting things answered without me needing to bark out the words.
“Stain, even though you’re still young, why don’t you do it? After all, you could use someone new to talk to.”
Jack’s words make it clear who his pick is. No one dares go against Jack. So, I trot forward to greet this mystery being, now known as Night. The others disperse, with Jack remaining there as this is where he resides. However, when I glance out the corner of my eye, I notice Carrot staring at me with a scowl on his scarred muzzle. I’m well aware he wishes to speak with me, considering what I had just about snarled at him merely five minutes ago. Too bad, I’m busy for the next two seasons or so.
    “So, you’re Night.” I bark.
“Yes, and you are clearly Stain. Do you need to state the obvious?” I resist the urge to snort at her. She clearly thinks highly of herself. Maybe a little too highly, in my opinion. Then again, who am I to judge anyone of their ego level?
“Well then, let’s go find you a kennel. You won’t need it too often though, since it gets a bit hot at night and the kennels aren’t exactly good for cooling you off.” I yip. Yes, I yip. (Coyotes do that, you know.)
We march along in a silence, although I’m unsure if it’s awkward or not. You can never tell with females. Of Course, I may not have a ton of experience with them, but I watched others crash and burn at dealing with girls, so I do know some things. Although, without first-hand knowledge, I can’t really guarantee that I know what I’m doing.
We finally arrive at the kennels, which really isn’t too far, but the silence made it feel like an eternity. There aren’t many kennels to choose from, and for the most part we don’t even use them right now unless it gets cold. The colors vary from each kennel. Yes, another beautiful aspect of our breeding and training is we can see in color. It’s one of the key factors in fighting enemies because if you have an enemy and an ally the same shade of grey, you won’t know the difference. The remaining colors are odd shades of black and some red thrown in. Not much variation, but even a little counts, I suppose.
“I’ll use the red one.” Night barks at me. She leaps into the kennel and gives it a good sniff, before jumping out.
“So, now what? After all, you’re in charge of me.” The sarcasm in her voice makes the growl from earlier bubble up in my throat. Jack told me that I need to learn to control my temper. I turn tail and head off, trotting at a brisk pace.
“That’s right; I am in charge of you. As such, you should meet the rest of the ‘Pack’.” I growl, a bit of the annoyance seeping into my voice. She may be extremely pretty, but even I draw the line at some point. So, off we march, Night following behind me. Oh, can you say fun?

  • Night's pretty annoying, but I just love Stain's personality.

  • Lol, seriously? I've had doubts about this story for a while.
Night is designed to be the rule follower, the no nonsense serious type. She'll change more in the story. Stain is just fun to write. He's crazy and gets in some messes.

  • If she's a rule follower, try to make her less sassy and more bossy. Other than that, great!

  • Lol, her character will quickly learn its place after Stain puts his paw down. I'm about to start on that part. I'll add chapter two in about 10 min.

  • Here's my latest chapter. Finally finished chapter 10 after revising 33 pages of story.

I crane my head as we march towards the electric fence, hunting for the sight of Cat, the unofficial guard on top. Night shuffled silently behind me, which didn’t make too much of a problem for me. Sure, she’s pretty, but that mouth could use a bit of work. I silently smirked at the thought. Yes, that mouth needed quite a bit of work, but who better than me to tame it?
We arrive at the stainless steel fence infused with enough volts of electricity to kill a human after a few brief moments of exposure. The fence was only on at night for the most part, due to a few concerns with the security involved during the day. No self-respecting business C.E.O would ever be caught attacking during the day. No, only at night would they release their coyotes onto the streets. Plus, from a financial standpoint, it was costing more to pay the electricity for the fence than it was worth the extra protection.
Then, there’s Cat. He’s a fairly odd coyote. His back story is a little messy, but that’s neither here nor there. His favorite place to pretty much live is the top of the fence. Of course, when he first joined, he got shocked, but refused to leave his perch. After having many fatal shocks, his body…‘immunized’ against the ‘virus’ that was the fence’s electric pulse.
Anyway, I spotted him, vibrant orange coat gleaming in the sunlight. I mentally heave a sigh, wishing that for a chance I could have a pelt that wasn’t so…stained. I almost laugh at the irony, but instead plaster a grin on my muzzle before calling out his name.
“Hey, Orange-head! Wakey, wakey! New member front and center! Hurry now, before I bite your ear off!” I growl, still grinning my wicked grin. Cat stretches, before allowing a half-smile to appear on his muzzle.
“Aw, I’m just gettin’ a little nap before tonight.” He flicks his ear before turning his pale eyes on Night.
“Ah, yeah. I remember you from this morning. How are you? I’m Cat, patrolman of the fence as you can see.” Cat remains relaxed on the fence, slightly dipping his head.
“My name is Night. Pleasure to meet you, Cat.” My jaw almost unhinges in shock. She was completely cordial with him! Yet with me, she acts as though I’m filth.
“Well, I plan on getting some more rest before tonight. You’re in for a real treat, Night.” He winked before hopping up and resting against the flat steel bars that top off the border.
I swallow a whine of complaint, nudging her and turning to head back to the cherry tree. It wasn’t fair that I be disliked for nothing while Cat gets a friendly greeting. I’ll be working harder to get her to warm up to me. After all, I am the most charming in our pack.
“You aren’t going to meet the rest of the pack right now. You can do that whenever you want. I just thought you should get a chance to meet someone now to talk to later.” I explain to her as we reach the spot where Jack is.
The old man is sound asleep from the looks of it, meaning I have to wake him. A few things about Jack that I learned early on, is that he’s the alpha, the oldest member, and sleeps like the dead. Also, you don’t even think about messing with him. He might not look like it, but he’s the strongest out of all of us. He can shred you in a heartbeat if he wanted to, and I’ve seen him do it.
“Hey, old man, wake up. Night needs to get a ranking in the pack.” I huffed, craning my ears back when he refused to open his eyes. When a new member arrived here, they were given a rank in the pack, a way of knowing where you stand. If you were like me, the ‘pup’ (at least that’s what Sling calls me, I’ll explain her later) of the group, you had no real power in group decisions. Jack, as alpha, naturally called all the shots around here.
“Hey, get up! Why do you get to sleep all day?! You lame old-” I was cut off with a yelp as I met ground with my snout, fangs lightly embedded in my scruff. I’m lightly trembling, breathing in and out quicker than before. Another thing about Jack, he’s extremely paranoid, so any sudden motions or loud noises cause him to attack.
“I’ve been up, pup.” He releases my throat, and I crane my head to look at him, squinting from the light glare of the sun. He shakes his head a bit before yawning, allowing the trademark grin to settle on his face. I prop myself up into a sitting position, still lightly shaking.
“Ok, then why didn’t you answer me?” I growl, masking my fear. I have to mask it, because I’ll freak out otherwise. It’s hard to fight the fear that comes with knowing you could die at any moment, but you live with it. All part of our job, I suppose.
Jack flicks an ear before scratching his neck with his hind leg. “I wasn’t aware I had to answer to you, pup. Last I checked you had the lowest rank in the pack, not the other way around.”
I narrow my eyes, my hackles rising. If there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s being talked down to. It’s bad enough knowing I’m the lowest ranking member of the pack, but actually being treated like dirt…
I let a snarl slip out before tackling Jack, sinking my teeth into his scruff, allowing the force of the blow to roll us over in the dirt. I feel teeth latch onto my scruff again, and I’m ripped off of him. He flings me like a ragdoll with his fangs, sending me tumbling head over heels into the fence. I shake my head, attempting to clear it, before wobbling over to Jack. He’s fine, I can tell. My teeth are too small to do any real damage right now.
He snorts, his version of cackling. (Yes, we cackle, almost like hyenas.) “Nice try, Stain, really good use of your jump. Had me rolling a good bit there. You okay?”
I nod, before carrying on with what I was going to tell him before our ‘fight’. “Night needs a rank, as you know.”
I decide to turn and shuffle off while Night is tested. I’ve already seen enough rankings (the ‘Master’ would help train and foster other coyotes on occasion) and it’s almost feeding time. Maybe tonight I’d get some fish instead of rat. I love rat for dinner. But, it does get stale every other week, so I started eating fish. It’s not as slimy as I thought it would be, and makes my coat shiny. So, as I already explained, I swivel around, ready to munch some fish. Of course, Jack just gives me another shock with what he says.
“She doesn’t need a rank.” I gape at him in shock. Doesn’t need a rank?! Of course she needs a rank! What is the old lunatic thinking?! He clearly has fleas in his brain. That’s the only explanation for it.
“At least, for now anyway.” I twitched a bit at that. I had been expecting him to smack her into the dust like he did with me when I was given a rank. It’s almost cruel how she’s allowed to get off scot-free.
A glint of something I’ve never seen passes into the old coyote’s eyes before flickering away. I don’t have time to recognize what it is. It leaves me wondering what it could have been. Yet, at that moment, my stomach chooses to remind me that it needs some food. So, I swivel around yet again and begin to trot off. Night follows me, as does the old man.
Our food is always out, so we never have to really worry about feeding times. It just sits in a bowl, until sunrise the next day, when it’s changed out. We normally get the same thing every day. If we don’t like it, though, we can just go hungry for a little while and the food is changed with something else. Yes, we are spoiled, but if you risked your life every day, wouldn’t you want to be spoiled?
My dish today is fish (As I’d been hoping) as is Night’s. The others have a large variety of favorites. Some enjoy vegetables, like Carrot does, and others prefer all red meat, like Chain. Whatever the choice, we all enjoy the food. A small treat to having to guard Master for the rest of our lives. Yet I suppose our job is not as bad as I make it seem. Please, allow me to explain.
