  • Kadic Academy may seem like a normal boarding school, but behind this prestigious academy lurk secrets that have cost people their lives. Possibly the greatest of these is a more recent incident that took place less than four years ago: Legend has it that a small group of students discovered a machine somewhere close to the school. A machine that could freeze and reverse time! But, not only could the machine manipulate time, but it could also manipulate space, allowing the students to cross into another world, a world whose denizens threatened our very existence.

The students kept this machine a secret and crossed into the alternate world frequently in a quest to stop the evil within from ever leaving. No one knows for sure how long it remained hidden- Weeks? Months? Years? There's no way to tell.

The legend ends with the students' victory over the evil and their pledge never to reactivate the machine or to ever speak of it to outsiders.

Does this machine still exist today? Can it really do what the legend says? Or is this another load of baloney? Perhaps we'll never know; perhaps you will be the one to rediscover it.

Erick Wynn chuckled and closed the "Urban Legends" magazine as the bus pulled up to his new school. He and several other kids gathered their belongings and exited the bus. He had always enjoyed little legends like that, Bigfoot, The Mothman, and all those others. But that was all they were, legends. Tails made up for entertainment.

He walked through the gate and headed straight for the administrative building.

"Welcome to Kadic Academy! You must be Erick Wynn." The receptionist, a short lady with curly red hair and a bubbly attitude, said, looking up from her stack of papers as the new student walked in.

"That's me." Erick said cheerily. This was going to be an interesting year...

  • Karina Allard had been dropped off at the front gates by her parents early that morning. They always wanted her out of their hair as soon as possible so they could travel. She was perfectly fine with that of course, but she was nervous about going this school year alone.

Currently, she was making sure all of her things were put away in her dorm room before heading out to the meet and greet held every year. Such fun...

  • "We're glad to have you here at Kadic Academy. Your room is 82. It looks like your roommate hasn't gotten here yet so you get first pick." The reception lady spoke cheerily and handed Erick a small folder, probably the schedule and a list of athletic activities or something.

"Thanks." Erick replied, taking the folder and walking briskly to the dormitory building.

He found room 82 a few doors from the back of the hall on the second floor of the four-story building. He opened the door and stepped inside, closing it behind him. He tossed his two large dufflebags on one of the two beds, the one of the left, and looked about the room.

There were two beds on either side near the door, each with a tall wardrobe at the foot. There was one large window on the wall opposite the door and a desk sat on either side of it. There was a nightstand, also, at the head of each bed.

Other than the furniture, the room was vacant. There were no posters or paint on the walls, no rugs on the floor, nothing in the wardrobes, as he discovered when he opened them up to get a feel of how big they were, and only a set of white sheets neatly folded up on each unmade bed.

"Guess my other things haven't arrived yet." he could concluded, going off the fact that they were supposed to be in the room and the the fact that the room was empty.

"Oh well. I can do without them for a few days." He shrugged, sitting down on the other bed and opening up the folder. In it was a map of the school, another map of the school grounds, including the park trail, a schedule for all his classes and where each class was located. It was just like all the other schools he'd been to, only a bit bigger in size and a lot smaller in attendance.

He'd been switching schools all his life, sometimes only a few months between moves, due to his parents' traveling jobs. His father worked in the military as part of some sort of special response team or something like that, and his mother worked in the forensics department of the FBI, so they were always traveling from one location to the next, taking him along with them.

But with their recent relocation came a decision that would change things for him. The three of them had sat down and discussed the matter many times before, but the conclusion had always been the same: he'd enroll in the public school until the next move. But with his highschool years coming to a close, his parents had thought it better for him to pick a school and stick with it until he graduated. And frankly, he couldn't have agreed more.

So here he was, in a boarding school Sceaux, one of Paris' many suburbs. From the look of things, he'd be here for the next two years before graduating and heading off to college at who-knows-where.

Erick sighed and shut the folding, tossing it onto the bed with his bags on it and headed left the room to where a steady flow of students and the loud clangor of chatter and small talk filled the hallway. Most of the students looked friendly enough, very few of them looked like they'd rather be elsewhere.

Well that's good, I guess. He thought.

The bell rang, signalling lunch time, and the students rushed from their rooms and headed to the large cafeteria. In an instant, the hallway was vacant except for himself and a few other stragglers.

"Dang. These kids like their lunch." Erick laughed, causally strolling down the hall.

  • Karina joined the flow of students, and looked around her. Just like last year, she was invisible. She'd been here for two years, and hopefully would continue to be here. She liked being left to herself, however lonely that may be. It meant she could explore and do fun things without being noticed.

She most certainly has been in her share of trouble, mainly for being in places she shouldn't be. But hey, when you have no friends, what else was there to do? She slowed down, letting the majority of the student body pass her, and she followed along at the back. She looked around, noticing only a few other students and smiled. Maybe she would go explore again today. Her stomach growled.

    'Maybe after lunch,' she decided.

  • Daniel's parents had just dropped him off at the front gate, as he walked down the road into the school, he noticed clusters of students, a man in gym clothing began to yell about getting to class or something... He picked up the pace as he saw the students begin to walk into the school, soon he was there, the doors into the new school. He stood there for a moment, and the brash man in the gym clothing yelled at him to get a move on. Daniel thought to himself "What flew up his butt?"

Soon he walked into his first class, algebra, the forsaken land for him. He prayed to God "Please no drill and kill questions, please no drill and kill questions." He sat down at his desk and opened his algebra book, to his dismay, it was filled to the brim with drill and kill questions. The class dragged on until he finally got finished with it, as soon as the teacher announced the completion of class. He jumped out of his seat and grabbed everything off of his desk, he saw that there was a schedule for all of the classes.

He quickly grabbed it and looked to see what was his next class, art, another subject he despised, but to his excitement, science was immediately after it. He walked into the hallway with his focus remaining on his paper, until he accidentally bumped into someone...

  • Karina had been minding her own business nicely, on her way to class, when suddenly she found herself on the floor, her belongings strewn around her. She made a small noise of surprise and looked up to see a boy standing over her. She blinked and looked at him in silence. Slowly she started gathering her things, all the while staring the boy down.

  • Daniel was startled by the girl "Oh! I'm sorry, I didn't see you there." he picked up the girls belongings and helped her up. "Are you okay?"

  • Karina nodded and accepted her things from him. "You should watch where you're going," she said quietly. "As for my health... I am fine." She looked around and at the door to the classroom she was about to enter. "You in this class?" She asked.

  • Daniel looked her in the eye, then shifted his gaze, "No, I'm two doors down actually." he shifted his gaze to the watch on his wrist, "I apologize for the inconvenience..." he walked off towards his art class, his thoughts were in a frenzy, but they all had the same subject "Why did I not notice her?" he was uncomfortable with this feeling as he was used to being the one to be ignored, and was usually the one to notice others. He walked into the art class, he sighed as the teacher announced the beginning of the class. He sat down in his seat, and as the teacher said, he grabbed some scrap paper and began to mimic the drawings and techniques on the board. The class finally finished, he jumped out of his seat and began to walk towards his science class, in his head he was laughing maniacally as he opened the door to the class and smirked. The class began, and ended rather abruptly, as a gas leak was detected in the room. Daniel out of the corner of his eye saw a faint, black bolt jump out of the lamp on his teachers' desk. The students in the room were thankfully evacuated, and the fire alarm was sounded. Daniel had held up his t-shirt collar so it would cover up his mouth and nose as he ran outside.

  • Erick shoved his things into his black backpack and hustled out of the chemistry lab, which was on the first floor of the science building next to the track. His science teacher, an older man in his mid-fifties by the name of Achziger, stopped by the door to count the students. When he was satisfied, Mr. Achziger hurried the class down the hall and out the door to where the other classes that had been going on were now waiting.

"Now, you cheeldrin vweit here." He said in his thick German accent before walking briskly to the large office building at the front of the school grounds.

"Translation: Don't go anywhere." Someone in the large cluster of students remarked, earning a laugh from several others and a scolding from an elderly woman, easily in her late sixties or early seventies.

Erick checked his watch, the class was going to end in less than ten minutes and Mr. Achziger was still on his way to the office. Since it was the first day of school here, and technically it was just a "sample"day, this was the last class.

Mr. Achziger's not going to be back for another twenty minutes, school ends in ten, and I'm expected to sit here and wait? Erick thought, crossing his arms, Like that's going to happen.

With that last thought, he stole quietly away the moment the elderly teacher, who he presumed to be Mrs. Hertz, turned her back on him to chastise some unruly students.

  • Karina stood with her class at the track and frowned. Not that she minded missing History, but still... This was just plain ridiculous. She easily spotted the boy who knocked her down earlier with his class. Then she spotted some kid leaving the track. She smiled, Oh... adventure possibility. She thought. She quietly made her way through the crowd, avoiding teachers. Until she hit the edge, then she back away slowly before following the boy.

  • Daniel felt something was missing, he looked behind him, and began to move towards the edge of the crowd, he looked in the corner of his eye and saw whats-her-face from earlier. He looked around and began to walk away calmly. Once he was a good ways away from the crowd he picked up into a running pace, he remained silent, he breathed in through his nose and out of his mouth. Until he was just behind the girl from earlier. He began to mimic her pace and soon was beside her, "What's going on?"

  • Erick crossed through the woodline and into the school's private "park".

"More like a private forest. This place is huge!" He commented, looking up at the treetops and around at his other surroundings. It was more than impressive, it was downright epic.

He found a well trodden dirt trail and started down it, making note of the randomly set benches and regular lamps. It was a decent little trail, but didn't quite give him the excitement he was looking for so he continued down it, searching for anything really interesting or out of the ordinary.

Then the old legend of the school came to his mind as he came across a manhole leading down to the sewers. Erick remembered reading of how the students had apparently used the sewers under the school to get to the factory where they found the so-called "supercomputer".

"Eh, it's worth a shot, I guess." He shrugged before rolling up the cuffs of his jeans just in case it was messy down there. He popped his knuckles, gripped the latches on either side of the large manhole cover, and lifted, standing up as he pulled on it with his arms.

With the sound of metal grinding against metal, the cover slid upward and Erick pushed it to the side. As it turned out, it wasn't as heavy as it seemed once the seal was broken and it slid aside easily.

He leaned over the hole and took a deep breath, testing the smell to decide whether or not it was breathable. It smelled like fart. And sweat. And mildew. All in one nasty package.

Satisfied that the air was relatively safe, Erick took hold of the rails on either side of the ladder and slid down, landing at the bottom with a thud that echoed along with the sound of slowly running water.

He was wrong about the smell, it was much worse down here then it was on the surface.

I'll try to make this quick, I guess. He decided. He pulled his phone from his pocket and switched on its flashlight app.

From the looks of things, the sewers were composed of a large gridwork of tunnels, canals, and pipes. The walls were lined with aging yellow tiles that had mold growing in the grout and in cracks. The path was simply a concrete outcropping from the wall -much like a sidewalk on a city block- with small metal catwalks stretching over the sewage canals.

Skuff marks, similar to those left by his old longboard, lined the pathway. Further down, more scuff marks showed where someone had rounded the corner a little too sharply who-knows-how-long ago.

Erick thought for a moment before deciding to follow the marks, after all, it'd suck to get lost down here.

  • Karina shrugged at Daniel and stepped up her pace to try and catch up with Erick. Once upon entering the forest however, she saw that he had vanished. She stopped and looked around in frustration. Where could he have-- Her thought was interrupted by a soft metal clang. She smiled in triumph and followed the noise, hoping that Daniel was keeping up. "Come on no-name," she called. Speaking louder than she had the whole time she'd been going to Kadic Academy.

She saw an open manhole and scrunched her nose up at the smell. Why on earth would he go down...there. She nearly gagged as she leaned over it. She quite honestly had no idea where the tunnel lead. She may like to go on adventures, but she cut them off at going in a sewer. Oh well, she thought holding her nose, she jumped in and landed lightly on her feet.

She looked up. "You coming?" she called.

  • Daniel smiled and jumped down the manhole "Geronimo!!!" he landed on his feet and stood straight up, he looked at Karina, "Now that I think about it, I never did introduce myself, I am Daniel, but I prefer to go by Dan most of the time." he smiled and reached out his hand.

  • "Karina," she said, not fully looking at him. She was too busy looking around. "Call me whatever you like, I don't really have friends so..." she shrugged and looked closely at the ground. Age old scuff marks littered the ground. Who knew how long they'd been there. "Come on, I think he went this way." She started leading the way, still wondering exactly where this tunnel led to.

  • Erick froze.

Did I just hear voices? he wondered. He held his breath and listened intently.

"...Kar... don't... friends..." Came the faint echo of a girl's voice from the path he had taken.

I knew someone would follow me! he spat on the ground and thought about what to do. He knew it'd be easy to lose them in these tunnels, but that might mean getting either himself or his followers lost, an event he didn't want on his hands.

"Why do I have to be a nice guy?" He asked no one in particular as he turned back around and rounded the corner again.

"Hey you guys! I'm over here!" He called, waving his hand and shining his flashlight on he wall next to him so they would see it more easily in the dark sewer.

From his point of view, there looked to be at least two people down here with him.

Good, he thought, less people to keep track off.

  • Daniel covered his eyes, the flashlight was shining quite brightly, "Hey, could you shut that off?!" he half-yelled, he despised light in his eyes, he felt quite comfortable in the dingy, dark sewers.

  • Karina blinked and smirked slightly. Though she was quite put off about being caught. Too bad... she thought.

"Why are you in the sewers?" she asked Erick softly. She really was curious as to why someone would be down here. The smell was horrid.

  • "Sorry." Erick clicked the flashlight off and waited a few seconds to let his eyes adjusting before answering the girl's question.

"Well, class will be officially over, as well as our first day of school, in just a minute or two and I was eager to get something done so I thought to myself 'hey, why not explore a little'. So Exploring I went." He said casually, as if he ventured into the sewers quite frequently.

"The park out there is nice a pretty indeed, but it didn't have the... excitement that I was looking for. I saw the manhole there and gave it a shot. So here I am. A boy in the sewers. I might be smuggling illegal contraband, I might be planning a nefarious act of crime, but I'm not. I'm just a bored teen with a lust of adrenaline." Erick shrugged, a teasing twinkle in his eye.

"But the real question is..." He let his voice trail off dramatically and a clever grin played across his face, "why are you two here?"

He then crossed his arms and leaned up against the mildewy tunnel wall, asking, "I mean, seriously, who follows a random dude into the sewers? It's kinda weird."
