  • Maplewind

Fly through the trees, make not a sound, but the pounding of paws, the gurgling of the river song

Maplewind sat in her customary position next to the river, her tail twitching very so often. Her light brown pelt was fluffed up even though it was moderately warm. Spring was coming on, but Maplewind still felt cold. But not the outsider of her, no, it was her heart that was cold. Her mother and father, dead and gone, it was enough to make even the talkative she-cat fall silent. She had no family now, she was the only surviving kit in her litter, her mother's first.

That had been thirteen moons ago, however, and her father and mother's death had only been less than a moon. I will be okay She thought to herself, sighing. As long as she had the river. The calming sound of the gurgling water helped, but her thoughts were constantly being drawn back to Shadowclan. A small bubble of hatred blossomed in her belly. Shadowclan was evil, and did not deserve to be a clan. It had killed her family, her parents.

Maplewind looked up suddenly, wrapping her tail around herself. Had she heard a noise over the sounds of the river or was it just her imagination? Maplewind's pupils dilated in fear. They were coming for her, the Shadowclan cats. They had told her they would, those moons ago, when she was still a curious kit.

Ottersplash was walking her customary walk along the river. Her off-white paws taking her silently, deftly along the well-known path. She was lost in her thoughts until she looked up and saw a she-cat staring into the water. She was about to call a greeting when something stopped her. This cat looked lost in misery. Well, might as well cheer her up.

She shook her black long-furred pelt and padded to the other cat's side, "Hello," She said gently, "I am Ottersplash. Who are you?"

  • Maplewind

Fly through the trees, make not a sound, but the pounding of paws, the gurgling of the river song

Maplewind relaxed. It was just another Riverclan cat. Nothing that would hurt her. She shook herself gently, trying to get rid of the feeling of fear. Her pelt smoothed and her pupils reverted to their normal size.
"Hi Ottersplash." Maplewind said, her usually loud voice soft and a tad melancholy. "I'm Maplewind." Her tail flicked as she looked back out at the river. Some company was good, even if the cat had given her a huge fright.

Ottersplash seemed to relize that the cat thought she was not a RiverClanner from the fear-scent flowing of her. She shook her tough, sturdy, little body, wondering what was wrong. Maplewind, intresting name, though it reminded her of trees closing in over her. Not being able to see the beautiful open sky. In her mind she hit herself.

'Stop it, Ottersplash,' she told herself crossly. She turned her single-striped head toward Maplewind again and sighed inwardly. She kept repeating some words in her mind, become her friend, Ottersplash, become her friend...

"So...What's wrong?" she finally got the courage to ask, then she followed Maplewind's gaze back at the river.

A small pause. The sounds of the river chattered merrily away, never ceasing. Sometimes, Maplewind thought, If you think hard enough, you can hear when the river is saying. Then Ottersplash spoke.
    "So...What's wrong?"
Maplewind shot a side-glance at the she-cat. "Nothing, nothing, just thinking..." She mumbled, shifting her paws into a more comfortable position.
If she told Ottersplash, if she told anyone, they would think her crazy. Seeing Shadowclan cats everywhere. they might even drive her from the camp. Maplewind fluffed her fur. No, she didn't want to think that way. Everything would be alright. She would just keep quiet and everything would be alright.
No it won't, Maplewind. said a small voice in the back of her mind. She shook it away and looked back at Ottersplash, trying to look less worried than she really was.

Ottersplash snorted, "I know something is not right, you freaked out when I appeared till you relized I was a Clanmate."

She started licking her long black and white fur vigorously, talking to herself once again, 'Maybe she is like you sensitive but doesn't show it, what if you hurt her feelings with your straightfowardness. that is another thing you have to work on.

"Sorry, was I too straightforward?" asked the long-furred warrior.

Maplewind blinked in surprise and looked down at her paws. "Was It really that obvious?" She asked, her blue-green eyes worried. She hoped the she-cat was just exaggerating, she would be so embarrassed if it was as bad as Ottersplash said it was. She sighed heavily. "No," She said, closing her eyes and steeling herself. "No, you weren't too straightforward. I'm just jumpy today, It has been a rough moon."

Ottersplash snorted to herself, still disgusted with herself that she was so straightforward with the cat that oviously needed a confidence boost. She could lie and say that it wasn't that obvious but that was lying and the black warrior didn't like to lie. This left only one choice.
"Yes, I am afraid it was rather obvious," Ottersplash nevously murmured. She hoped that the cat wouldn't snap at her even if she sorely needed it.
Jumpy? This triggered the long-furred she-cat's curiosity.
"Why are you jumpy?" she asked unable to contain curiosity anymore. She smiled to herself suddenly, thinking that curiosity was going to kill her. The saying, curiosity killed the cat, was so true.

Maplewind sighed. Embarrassment pricked at her pelt and she shifted to look at the curious she cat. "Some...cats close to me died recently. Some bad memories came back." Maplewind tried to be as vague as she could while still telling the truth. She didn't really want to pour her heart out to this cat she didn't know well.
Maplewind didn't actually have many close friends. She was a very friendly cat, so she had many cats she could talk to, but no one she could confide in something so personal as this.

Ottersplash stared at Maplewind for a second, "I can't say I can relate, but I am sorry for your loss."
She sat in a companionable silence for a bit before asking, "Do you want to become best friends, Maplewind?"
The long-furred RiverClanner was sure that Maplewind was gong to be surprised. She usually didn't ask these questions so soon after meeting another cat.

  • Maplewind

Maplewind tipped her head to one side. "Best...friends..?" She asked hesitantly. Maplewind felt a bit worried. She'd never had a best friend before, she didn't know how to be one. She shuffled her paws awkwardly, staring back out at the river. The river was her friend, but you couldn't talk to the river. Or, alt least, it couldn't talk back to you. It probably couldn't hear a cat that was trying to talk to it, so busy was it chattering and gurgling along, wrapped up in itself.

"Yeah, Best friends," said Ottersplash, "We would just be friends only better."
She swished her thick tail nervously, unsure of what Maplewind would think of her idea. She followed Maplewind's gaze back to the river, also thinking of how the river could be an extremely good friend.

  • Maplewind

"Uh..." Maplewind said, then took a long breath. She was silent for a moment, her liquid eyes glittering with worry. What should she do? Admit that she didn't know how to be a good best friend or just play along? Finally she just decided to tell the truth.
"I don't know how to be a best friend and I've never had one before and...and... The words tumbled from her jaws like water failing down a waterfall, sounding tense and strained. Maplewind worried that Ottersplash would laugh in her face, or worse, turn tail and stalk away from the socially incompetent she-cat. Maplewind closed her eyes, awaiting the she-cat's reaction.
please don't be bad, please don't be bad. she wished in her head.

If Ottersplash was surprised she didn't show it. She just glnced back at Maplewind and shrugged.
"Well, I guess you'll have to learn," she told the cat with her eyes closed, "To tell you the truth, you'd be my first female friend."
She was sure that Maplewind would laugh than thought back to it. If they were friends than they would tease each other, not laugh at one another and when the other was feeling down than to help build the other up. She had discovered the true meaning of best friends. Friends, just normal friends, were just there and you could trust them but they might betray you, but BFF's would never think of such a thing.

Maplewind relaxed. That went better than she expected. "Really?" She asked Ottersplash, "Your not just saying that to make me feel better, are you?"
She turned her head to meet the other cat's eyes, but Ottersplash's eyes were closed. Was she telling the truth? It seemed that she was. Maplewind was surprised. The she-cat seemed like she knew exactly what she was doing, and could make best friends in the blink of an eye.

Ottersplash opened her eyes and purred, "Of course I am not saying it to make you feel better. Oh, If your thinking that I can make friends in the blink off an eye, your a bit mistaken. I just act that way."

Ottersplash stood suddenly, "Come on, let's swim, my back-legs are getting cramped. Wanna come?"

  • Maplewind

Maplewind relaxed. Her eyes grew lighter, and when Ottersplash asked if she wanted to come swim with her she nodded. "Sure, sounds great."
She felt much better now than she had for a while now. The cheerful Ottersplash had pulled her right out her her self pity. It was amazing. Like magic, but not. Just the magic of a friendly face and someone who cared enough to ask what was wrong. Was that what a best friend was like?

Ottersplash nodded and walked down to the river, when she arrived, the black-stripped she-cat tested the water with a quick dip of her paw. Satified with the warmth of the water, she jumped in, splashing water all over the place.
When she turned around she laughed, "I not called 'splash' for nothing. When I was an apprentice I splashed my dad, he was furious for weeks."

  • Maplewind

Maplewind jumped into the water after Ottersplash with a dainty little splash, her face alight with joy. She laughed at Ottersplash's story as she let herself drift along for a few tail-lengths until she was closer to the smaller she-cat. "Splashing is fun!" she said, swiping a paw through the water so a little wave splashed up. "I'm not very good at it though." She said with a little mrrrow of laughter.

  • Goldenfinch could hear the sound of splashing cats in the distance, cats who were playing in the river. He didn't know if it was safe to go into the river because usually the current was too strong and would wash cats away but maybe it was different today. He turned his head in the direction of the river, he was just going to check on them. His golden fur shone in the sunlight, the sun casted its bright rays down on his golden pelt making him feel more relaxed.

He padded over to the river's edge and peered down into it to see Maplewind, who he didn't really know well and Ottersplash. He had never really talked to Maplewind before but he had seen her around the camp before."Playing in the river eh?" He said but it was more like a statement than a question. A smile stretched across his face with amusement. It wasn't everyday that you saw two she-cat's splashing in the water. There was simply just no time nowadays for him to have fun, sure it was Newleaf and there was plenty of prey but he always tried to think of more helpful things to do for his clan once he was done with his basic duties as a warrior.
