[fancypost borderwidth=0px][justify][sub]here <3
so,you said you knew the basics? What would those be?
Just like the colors and the recessive/dominant thing.
[fancypost borderwidth=0px][justify][sub]ah, okay, well just start with this
Homozygous - when a cat has two copies of the same gene (e.g two black genes)
Heterozygous - when a cat has two genes, each different. (e.g one chocolate and one black)
Phenotype - the most basic way to describe something (e.g a cat, a dog)
Genotype - the word used to reperesent a gene.
Eumenalin - the word used to show the black gene.
Pheomenalin - the word used to show the red gene.
Before we start on the black gene, in my head I represent the black and red gene as a flower, the middle being the basic group (the black gene, the red gene) and the petals being sub catagories. (e.g black, chocolate, cinnamon)
now, as mentioned above the eumenalin gene has 3 strands. black, cinnamon and chocolate.
BB = Black
bb = chocolate
bb1 = cinnamon
As you also may know, all cats on wcrpg carry dilute. The dilute for black is blue, the dilute for chocolate is lilac and the dilute for cinnamon is fawn.
DD = non dilute
Dd = non dilute cat carrying the dilute gene (but all cats carry this anyways)
dd = dilute
Finally, the male and female cromosones. The male have only one O gene and the other is Y, where as the mother have both O. Kittens can only have one cromozone from each parent (including the one that makes their gender) so the male get their genes from the mother and the females get their genes from the male. but in some cases if the male is red and the female is black, then the female can be tortie, taking each 1 cromosone from each parents and 'blending' it together to make a tortie.
oY = black factor male
OY = red factor male
oo = black factor female
OO = red factor female
Oo = tortie female
You understand, right? :) If so, we'll start with guessing the cat from the codes.
I understand. But the whole O might confuse me. I'm used to X (it's what I was taught in science when we did simple genetics)
[fancypost borderwidth=0px][justify][sub]X's can work too (: I learned it with O's but if you would like me to try with X's, just let me know!
See if you can tell me what these cats are
BB, Dd, aa, Xx
bb, dd, Aa, Oo
b1b1, dd, Aa, oY
Bb, dd, Aa, xY
-- I put X's and O's just to see <3
Also==
AA - Tabby/Torbie
Aa - Tabby/Tortie
aa- non tabbied
Torbies are just tortie with the tabby gene
1. Female Tortie?
2. Female Lilac Tabby?
3. Male Fawn Tabby?
4. Male Blue Tabby(carries the chocolate gene)?
1. Female Tortie?
2. Female Lilac Tabby?
3. Male Fawn Tabby?
4. Male Blue Tabby(carries the chocolate gene)?
[fancypost borderwidth=0px][justify][sub]
1. Correct
2. This would actually be a Lilac Torbie. See, the female has the recessive black gene, and the dominant red gene. When those two get put together, there co-dominant, meaning that they both show up, which creates a tortie. But you see that this cat has the dominant tabby gene. So, she becomes a torbie
3. Correct
4. It would just be a male blue tabby. it carries that, but we usually don't say it (=
Try these
bb, Dd, Aa, Oo
bb1, dd, aa, oo
bb1,dd,aa, oY
BB, Dd, aa, OY
bb, Dd, Aa, Oo - Female Chocolate Tortie?
bb1, dd, aa, oo - Female Solid Lilac?
bb1,dd,aa, oY - Male Solid Lilac?
BB, Dd, aa, OY - Male Red Tabby?
[fancypost borderwidth=0px][justify][sub]all correct except for the first one. Remember that when a tortie has the dominant agouti (tabby) gene, it becomes a torbie
Oh, yeah
:3 heh
[fancypost borderwidth=0px][justify][sub]see if you can guess some kits. Remember that all solids are assumed to carry dilutes and when you get to a red and black, or vice versa pairing, remember to separate the genders.
Blue xx Cinnamon
Lilac xx Black
Chocolate xx Chocolate
Black xx Red tabby
- I'll add actual tabbies once you've got this down <3
Blue xx Cinnamon
Kits can be black, blue, cinnamon, or fawn
Lilac xx Black
Kits can be black, blue, chocolate, or lilac
Chocolate xx Chocolate
Kits can be chocolate or lilac
Black xx Red tabby
Male kits can be blue, black, red tabby, or dilutered tabby?
Female kits can be blue, black, red tabby, dulitered tabby, tortie, or blue tortie/torbie?
Black xx Red tabby
Male kits can be blue, black, red tabby, or dilutered tabby?
Female kits can be blue, black, red tabby, dulitered tabby, tortie, or blue tortie/torbie?
[fancypost borderwidth=0px][justify][sub]
The first three are correct. Let's look at the last one.
It's a Black xx Red tabby.
Let's go over a few things first. A red tabby diluted, is called a cream tabby, not diluted tabby. When you have a pairing with this base colours, the males will only inherit the mothers colours. In this case, she is a red tabby. So the males will only be red tabby, cream tabby.
This is because males get there Y gene, which makes them male, from there father, so it only leaves one spot for a colour gene, which has to come from the mother. Every cat had a set of two of these to begin with.
The females are slightly more complex. They take a colour from each parent as well, but they have no Y gene, which enables two colour genes. Now, the black factor and red factor, when paired like this, are co-dominant. They both show up, which is why we get tortie. So here, the father will pass down a black gene, the mother a red gene. When they combine, you get a tortie.
But you must remember that all are assumed to carry dilutes as well. So, the blue gene could combine with the cream. And since there both dilutes, instead of a tortie, you would get a diluted tortie. You won't get torbies unless you have an active tabby gene. The tabby with the red factor doesn't affect the kits.
So:
Black xx Red tabby
Males- Red tabby, Cream tabby
Frnales- Tortie, Dilute tortie
Eyes can be any realistic eyecolour but blue
Now, a question. Would you rather we do tabby and tabby types before the red factor so it doesn't confuse you? I realise I skipped ahead and I'm terribly sorry for that
OOOOH. >.>
yeah, could we do the tabby thing first?
[fancypost borderwidth=0px][justify][sub]certainly, and again, I'm so sorry <3
there are 4 types of tabbies; classic, mackerel, spotted and ticked. knowing you orange you're probably aware of these xD but they may sound easy, and once you get the hang of them they are! but when you start they can be hell. So, here are the codes for you;
AA = tabby
Aa = tabby carrying solid (though you won't really need this one)
aa = non tabby
McMc = homozygous mackerel tabby
Mcmc = heterozygous mackerel tabby carrying non-mackerel tabby
mcmc = homozygous non-mackerel tabby
SpSp = homozygous spotted tabby
Spsp = heterozygous spotted tabby carrying non-spotted tabby
spsp = homozygous non-spotted tabby
TaTa = homozygous ticked tabby
Tata = heterozygous ticked tabby carrying non-ticked tabby
tata = homozygous non-ticked tabby
McMc spsp tata = homozygous mackerel tabby
Mcmc spsp tata = heterozygous mackerel tabby
mcmc spsp tata = homozygous classic tabby
McMc SpSp tata = homozygous spotted mackerel tabby
Mcmc Spsp tata = heterozygous spotted mackerel tabby
mcmc SpSp tata = homozygous spotted classic tabby
mcmc Spsp tata = heterozygous spotted classic tabby
McMc spsp TaTa = homozygous ticked tabby
McMc spsp Tata = heterozygous ticked tabby
got them? now this is where the list get super and horrifically long. xD
ticked x classic = mackerel, classic and ticked
ticked x spotted = mackerel, spotted and ticked
ticked x ticked = ticked
ticked x mackerel = mackerel and ticked
mackerel x mackerel = mackerel
mackerel x ticked = mackerel and ticked
mackerel x classic = mackerel and classic
mackerel x spotted = mackerel and spotted
classic x classic = classic
classic x mackerel = mackerel and ticked
classic x ticked = mackerel, classic and ticked
classic x spotted = mackerel, classic and spotted
spotted x spotted = spotted
spotted x classic = mackerel, classic and spotted
spotted x ticked = mackerel, spotted and ticked
spotted x mackerel = spotted and mackerel
when you understand, give these a wirl!
BB DD McMc spsp tata oY
bb dd mcmc SpSp tata Oo
BB DD mcmc spsp tata oY
Brown mackerel tabby x Cinnamon ticked tabby
Blue x Chocolate spotted tabby
Lilac classic tabby x Fawn ticked tabby
it's fine! :3
ah jeez, here comess the fails xD
BB DD McMc spsp tata oY - Male solid Black?
bb dd mcmc SpSp tata Oo - Female Lilac Spotted Tabby?
BB DD mcmc spsp tata oY - Male solid black?
Brown mackerel tabby x Cinnamon ticked tabby
i don't know what the genes for a brown tabby would be?
Blue x Chocolate spotted tabby
Kits can be black, blue spotted tabby, lilac, lilac spotted tabby, chocolate, or chocolate spotted tabby?
Lilac classic tabby x Fawn ticked tabby
Kits can be lilac, lilac classic or ticked or mackerel tabby?
Display More
it's fine! :3
ah jeez, here comess the fails xD
BB DD McMc spsp tata oY - Male solid Black?
Almost! You'll see that this cat has the McMc alleles. So, he is a mackerel tabby! When I black cat has the active tabby genes, he becomes a Brown tabby. So, this would be a Brown Mackerel Tabby
bb dd mcmc SpSp tata Oo - Female Lilac Spotted Tabby?
This would be a Lilac Spotted torbie. Remember that she has 'Oo', making her a tortie, but also has the tabby gene. So she becomes a spotted torbie. I know I said we weren't doing this yet, but I'm going to toss tidbits in here and there, just to keep you on your toes <3
BB DD mcmc spsp tata oY - Male solid black?
Correct!
Brown mackerel tabby x Cinnamon ticked tabby
i don't know what the genes for a brown tabby would be?
This cat is a genetic black cat with the tabby gene. So, a brown tabby. I'll explain this at the bottom then you can try these again
Blue x Chocolate spotted tabby
Kits can be black, blue spotted tabby, lilac, lilac spotted tabby, chocolate, or chocolate spotted tabby?
Not quite
Lilac classic tabby x Fawn ticked tabby
Kits can be lilac, lilac classic or ticked or mackerel tabby? Not quite
[fancypost borderwidth=0px][justify][sub]
The things you should know about tabbies, is we always assume them to carry the recessive, so we'll get more options.
Tabby xx Non-tabby = Tabbies and non tabbies
Non tabby xx Non tabby = No tabbies
Tabby xx Tabby = Tabbies and Non tabbies
Let's do.... Black xx Blue tabby.
Now, you see how the tabby is unspecified here? When it is, we usually leave them unspecified in the genetics boards, or we'll automatically assume it to be a mackerel tabby. But on the genetics test, if the tabby isn't specified, leave it that way.
Alright, so Black xx Blue tabby. I work things out with genotyping sometimes.
Black : BB, Dd, aa, oY
Blue tabby: BB, dd, Aa, oo
We'll do the gender and base colour first. That would be the (oY) and (oo) parts of the codes. Put them in a punnett square. It doesn't matter which goes where.
. o. Y.
o. oo, oY
o. oo, oY - this tells us that we'll have non red males and females. So we don't have to separate genders.
Next, well do the actual base colour. That would be the (BB) part of the code.
. B. B.
B. BB, BB
B. BB, BB - all these kits will be black, but remember our dilutes (below)
Now, the black cat is undiluted, so he has Dd, whilst the other is diluted; dd
. D. d.
d. Dd, dd
d. Dd, dd - dilutes and non dilutes, so, black and blue
Now, since one parent has the active tabby gene (Aa) we can also have tabbies.
. A. a.
a. Aa, aa
a. Aa, as - we can get tabbies and non tabbies, so, blue tabby because that's blue with the tabby gene, and brown tabby, because it is black with the tabby gene.
I'll assume this one to be mackerel tabbt-
Black xx Blue (assuming mackerel) tabby
- black, blue, brown tabby, blue tabby
- eyes can be any realistic colour but blue
- tabbies will be mackerel pattern
Looking at that, see if you can do the others above again.
Note* We usually just write out the kits, and just list the tabby option at the bottom
Ah, okay, so...
Brown mackerel tabby x Cinnamon ticked tabby
black, blue, cinnamon, fawn, brown tabby, blue tabby, cinnamon tabby, fawn tabby?
tabbies will be mackerel or ticked
Blue x Chocolate spotted tabby
black, blue, chocolate, lilac, brown tabby, blue tabby, chocolate tabby, lilac tabby
tabbies will be spotted
Lilac classic tabby x Fawn ticked tabby
Lilac, fawn, fawn tabby, lilac tabby
tabbies will be classic, mackerel, or ticked?
[fancypost borderwidth=0px][justify][sub]all perfect!
