"I had the same birthday as three of my 6 older brothers, so we grouped them all together and all drove down to the beach for a weekend," Dylan said, remembering the salty smell, the sand tickling her toes, the cry of the seagulls, and the crashing waves that sounded like thunder. She could remember all of that, but not that pizza tasted like.

I rubbed my face with my hands,feeling sad for the world as it is now."It's a sad thing this world has come to.I swear,if I ever find my brother again.And if I find he has found other survivors,I'm teaming up with him and creating a new America.One where I can be sure that this doesn't happen ever again."It was nice to think that that could be a possiblility,even though I knew in my heart that it was very unlikely.

The possibility of rebuilding America was alluring to Dylan. "Could I help you find him, then? If you don't mind, that is," she said shyly. Finding other survivors… it was never something she had considered or even thought about before.

I tilted my head,not really expecting her to say that"Seriously?"I had a hard time believing it,really"You'd help me track down my brother?"I was astonished,really.I had no idea where my brother is,but I did have an idea on where to look.He talked about the south,and he missed home.I assumed he went back home to Kansas and then branched out from there,knowing him.

I stared at her for a moment,my mouth agape.In one quick movement,I set my cooked meat down,and I threw my arms around the girl."Thank you.Thank you.Thank you."I kept repeating,smiling widely.

When she tensed up,I moved away slightly,smiling at her.The grin was so big,it should have been hurting by face,but I was just so happy that I couldn't feel a thing."Thank you."I whispered again,smiling at her.

"No problem," Dylan said, warmth flooding her. This was what happiness felt like. It wasn't like when you get a good catch and you have food for a week, it's knowing that there's still hope. That there's something to cling onto that might bring the world back- or part of it at least. Dylan decided she liked that feeling.

I still smiled at her,but now moved on to where he might be"Sam doesn't like walking a lot,but he did say that he wanted to go back home to Kansas.But we decided before hand that survivors are more likely to be in the ruins of cities,or possibly in other towns,so he has to be at least half way there now,counting the times he spends at stops.If we walked,or found some old sort of transportation,we could catch up to him within a month or two."I said,thinking of the areas he might stop.

A month or two. Winter would have set in by then. But then again, anything was better than the winters in Yellowstone. Anything.

I thought about it for a moment"Anytime you like.In Kansas it will still snow for the winter,but it won't be near as bad as up here."I nodded to her,now beginning to snack off of the peice of meat I had roasted.

I was breathing heavily of excitement.First,I found someone,which was unlikely on it's own.Someone that I could bring back a better America with.She wanted to come with me.It was a chance thing,and I was going to take it."I can't believe it either."

Dyaln flopped onto her back, staring up at the stars. She could easily find the big dipper, but there was one star she'd always seen that was away from all other stars, all alone, the other stars spread out away from it. She sometimes thought of herself as that star, but the thought of finding someone else made her feel more like one of the stars in the big dipper. She could fondly remember her father taking her out in the backyard with a telescope on warm summer nights.

I laid myself down on my back,looking up at the sky as I slowly ate my meat,now in bigger bites rather than snacking like I was earlier.The stars were beautiful,and I could name several of the consttalations.Me and my brother used them to navigate where we were going,how to tell if we were gpoing north or not.

"When I first got out here, I felt so alone…so I talked to the man in the moon. I stopped after a year, but it made me feel like I wasn't alone. And now you're here, and we're going to find your brother and other people, and now I don't have to be alone anymore…and neither do you," Dylan said.

I grinned wider at the thought"Being alone is the worst thing in the world.The lack of physical touch is worse.Because that's the proof you are alone.It's like the silence screams the truth,so I like to be loud."My thoughts were all over the place,but I didn't care.
