Crismonpaw yawned heavily and stretched his cramped muscles at Petalferns call. He groggily got to his paws and stumbled over. "Here!" he said, a bit too excitedly. Flattening his ears in embarassment, he waited for his mentor to tell him what he was doing today. Just not moss collecting... he prayed silently.
-
"Today," Petalfern began, "We are going to find the best places for prey, then we are going to hunt, finally, I'm going to show you the borders. But no moss collecting today, that will be for tomorrow." Petalfern looked at Crismonpaw, ready for an answer or a bunch of questions.
-
"Fine." he replied. Walking out of the apprentice's den, Crimsonpaw looked around at the Riverclan camp. Sun dappled the muddy ground and a single star shone brightly in the day light. He frowned but ignored it. A buzzing fly by his ear irritated him to full extent and he wacked it with his claw, killing the fly. He flicked his ear and it was gone.
-
"Come on," said Petalfern.
-
The crisp forest air was moist and warm, dew drop settling in on his fur. He walked to the river that was glistening with elegant ripples in it. Sunlight warmed the crystal-clear water and tadpoles moved in stiff, quick, circles, tails always wagging. Crimsonpaw rubbed the grass. It seemed awkward today, not the usual stiffness it was.
-
Petalfern lay at the river, waiting for her apprentice to catch up.
-
Crimsonpaw ran up to Petalfern. "Well? Are you going to 'mentor' me or not?"he grumbled. He flicked his maroon tail impatiently as he awaited her answer.
-
"I'm going to teach you how to fish," said Petalfern, "Make sure not to let your shadow fall on the water, or the fish will know their being hunted. Just watch what I do." Petalfern, making sure to not cast her shadow on the water, swiped her paw in the river, and a fish came out, lieing on the bank. Petalfern bit and killed it with one bite to the throat. "Now you try," she said to Crimsonpaw.
-
Sighing, Crimsonpaw turned his gaze on the clear blue water. Fish darted back and forth. Slowly reaching a paw down, he swiped at one of the fishes, but it scattered before he could catch it. "Mouse dung!" he grumbled, ears flattening. Crouching down, he turned so his shadow wasn't on the river. He waited for a golden fish that darted in a square. He struck it with a claw and threw the wiggling fish on the shore where it began to flop around. Leaping on it, he held it down with two paws and bit its neck to kill it. If hunting is always that hard, im going to have grey hairs before im 7 moons! he thought silently.
-
"Great job!" Petalfern said, "I didn't catch my first fish until my fourth try." "Try again." Petalfern told Crimsonpaw.
-
Crimsonpaw grunted. He watched the water and swiped up another small fish. "Like that?" he mewed dryly. He had heard hundreds of stories about 'food dilemas'. Yeah, right. In riverclan? Unlikely. He caught prey as if it were moss!
-
"Perfect," purred Petalfern. "Now, we are going to learn to hunt other sources of prey, just in case the river dosn't have enough fish. Come on." she told Crimsonpaw.
-
Other types of prey? Why would the river be gone? he wondered, but followed Petalfern anyway.
