  • Tris smiled softly and nodded, slipping out of the closet. She silently took a plate, carefully so she didn't even brush against his skin. Then, wandering to the edge of the room, she began to eat silently, shooting darting little glances around the room at even the slightest noises or movements. The second she was done, the plate hovered back to the table and she vanished back into the closet.

  • Greg watched her and seeing her slip back into the closet he set his plate on top of hers and walked over to it. "Tris..." He said not opening the door but knocking on it slightly. "Whats the matter sweetie?" He didn't want her to live in fear if that was the case.

  • Tris bit her lip, waving her hand and telekinetically opening the closet door. "I don't know, Dad. I'm not sure myself. I've tried to pin point it, but it's not working." With a heavy sigh, she curled up against the wall and stared up at him. "Why does it matter?" she asked, a hint of curiosity slipping into her voice.

  • Greg smiled at her as she talked to him and seeing her face made him just feel better. "Well...I don't want you to be upset." He replied answering her question. Sitting down and crossing his legs so he could talk to her, at this point he was just hoping maybe she would open up to him. But he knew that it would take a while for her, being what she has gone threw just seemed to shut her down.

  • Tris frowned. "Why? Why can't I be upset around you?" she asked softly. "Did I hurt your feelings or something?" Biting her lip, she curled up against the wall and stared at her feet. "I-If I did anything wrong.... Then I'm sorry."

  • "No Tris! You didn't do anything wrong!" Greg said shaking his head as he took her hand in his and kissed it softly. "I just like seeing you smile...Thats all." He said softly with a smile as he rubbed her hand with his thumb.

  • Tris smiled, silently staring into his eyes. "Thank you," she whispered quietly. She looked down at where he'd taken her hand, shrugged lightly, and let him, a hint of confusion brushing over her face and lifting her eyebrows slightly. "The customers will be back in a few minutes," she murmured, retreating into her shell. Why hadn't he cared that she had stolen something? Did he even want to parent her? Were they just friends now? How far could she go without crossing his line? A thousand questions whirled through her head and she curled up tighter, but didn't pull away. There was no reason to make him angry.

  • "I closed up shop...They can wait." Greg said as she retreated back. "Tris...Please talk to me. just tell me whats going on." He asked being straight forward at this point.

  • Tris bit her lip, looking away. "I just... I didn't think..." she tried, but there was nothing that she could say that would make sense. Sighing, she looked away. "It doesn't even matter that much." Yeah. It doesn't matter. You just want a parent, Tris thought to herself. That's all. A tear slipped down her cheek and she wiped it away quickly. "I'm sorry... I just thought I'd be in trouble or something for stealing... You didn't let me get away with hurting Mama J's house so I didn't expect you to just let me be after stealing..." Tris whispered, softly. "I'm just... confused, I guess..."

  • Greg whipped the tear from her face and said, "Tris...The reason I got mad at you at Mama J's is because you can control your anger. The reason I didn't get mad at you for stealing is it was out of habit. You lived on the streets and had to steal and I know you can't really control that. That's why I didn't get mad at you." He explained, hoping she would understand.

  • "I can learn not to steal..," Tris replied shyly. She looked out the window and then back at him. "Even if you don't want to help me, I want to learn not to steal." With a slight shudder, she climbed to her feet and wandered downstairs to the kitchen. With a tiny little depressed sigh, she began making hot cocoa and doing the dishes.

  • "If you want to stop I'll help you..." Following her downstairs he helped her with the dishes. "I was thinking that tomorrow we could do anything you want. Anything!" Chuckling a little as he smiled down at her.

  • Tris looked down at the dishes and nodded silently. After handing him a hot cocoa, she opened the store and finished out the day with him. Once the last customer had gone, she disappeared upstairs again. The girl cleaned up her room then came downstairs and helped clean the store. She sighed softly, settling down by the fireplace and staring into the flames. "Thanks," she whispered, not really in the mood for anything else. "Want some help making dinner?"

  • "You've done enough today!" Greg smiled as he kissed the top of her head as he walked by to the kitchen. "Just relax over there for a while and I'll work on dinner." Pulling out some chicken from the kitchen he made one of his favorites. A chicken BLT. Leaving the bacon, lettuce, tomato off the sandwich so she could add as much as she wanted onto it.

  • Tris bit her lip but nodded and silently wandered over to the fireplace. She silently stared into the fire and watched the embers glowing softly. With a deep sigh, she curled up on one of the blankets by the fire and fell asleep in a few minutes. When dinner was ready, she slowly stirred and looked up at Greg. Tris yawned, then turned over, wrapping the blanket tightly around herself and shivering. She scooted closer to the fire, then fell back asleep with a smile on her face.

  • Seeing her smile once again Greg left her to sleep. Placing another blanket over her and a pillow under her head. Taking his sandwich he began to read and turned on some classical music from the record played and listened to it softly. Watching as mid day slipped into night.

  • A few minutes later, Tris slowly got up and wandered over to the table. She quickly finished making her sandwich then began eating. "Thank you for dinner. It's delicious," the child commented, before picking up the table and putting the remaining food in the fridge. Tris wandered back over to the fireplace and curled up into her blankets again, peacefully staring into the fire.

  • Watching her stand up and eat he smiled softly at her. Then seeing her lay down the fire I grabbed a book and opened it. "I hope you don't mind if I read to you a story my wife and I would read to our son." Turning the book incase she wanted to see the picture he began to read the book Stella Luna.

  • Tris silently began to draw a bat on a piece of paper she'd found by the fire. As he continued to read, she added a bird's nest underneath the bat and wrote the words 'Stella Luna' at the top of the page. Then, curling up in the blankets, she listened to the rest of the story. Tris smiled, falling asleep as he read the last few words in the book. Her drawing was left on the floor, folded in half, with the words "For Dad" inscribed on the side of the paper without the drawing - in large, slightly shaky handwriting.

  • Hearing her fall asleep Greg stood up and noted that this was a good book to read to her. Lifting her up he carried her to her room and lay her on the bed. Tucking her in he kissed the top of her head and brushed the hair out of her face. Going back downstairs to extinguish the fire he bent down and saw the paper. Picking it up he smiled seeing the word Dad on it. Opening it he saw the picture of the bat and smiled. Tucking it into his pocket he put the fire out and went back upstairs. Once to his room he placed the picture in a place above his bed where everyone could see and sat down to read.
