  • "N-no. I'm not feeling hungry. Thank you though," Tris added softly. The girl quickly drank down the tea then finished the dishes. "Do you want anything for breakfast before we go?" she asked curiously, staring into the empty fridge with a slightly worried expression. I should just snatch something off the street if I'm feeling so hungry. It'd be easier. I wouldn't have to ask. Besides, then he won't feel so stressed about spending money to get food for me all the time... Tris thought to herself for a second, then she closed the fridge.

  • "Oh no I'm fine!" He smiled looking at her. Seeing her look at the empty fridge he said, "We'll grab something while were out! Considering we both have to eat!" Chuckling he ushered her upstairs to get dressed as he pulled on some nice slacks, a sweater and some shoes. Pulling a hat over his head he grabbed his coat and waited for her by the stairs as he tied his shoes.

  • Tris nodded quietly, not saying anything as she wandered upstairs. Smiling the girl pulled on a pair of blue jeans, a soft collared white shirt, and then pulled on some leather boots and shrugged on a purple vest to complete the outfit. Nodding to herself, she wandered back downstairs to Greg. "Ready to go?" she asked shyly, staring out at the beautiful spring day. Winter was definitely still in season, but spring was slowly fighting it's way. She smiled, seeing a cherry blossom floating across the sidewalk. Today would be a very good day indeed, not to mention a lucky one.

  • Greg nodded and took her hand. Leading her downstairs he watched her eyes follow a cherry blossom as it floated to the ground. Braking away from her for a moment he went over to the tree it came fro and picked one that had just bloomed. Smelling it and letting her smell it he smiled. Kneeling down he brushed a piece of her hair behind her ear and placed the cherry blossom gently in her hair. Smiling he stood up, memories flooded threw his hair, almost all the same. Pulling the blossom from the tree everyday they where in season when his wife was sick he always took one two her and placed it in her hair like he did the young child.

  • Tris smiled softly, inhaling the gently sweet scent of the flower. The blossom was a beautiful shade of light pink, caressing her skin with the silkiest of touches. "Thank you, Dad," she murmured, hugging him after he'd placed the blossom in her hair. He was always so kind to her and she smiled, thinking back to all the times he'd held her. She smiled, remembering their first meal together and the day he saved her from Gloria. A tear ran down her cheek and she took his hand. "I love you," Tris whispered.

  • Greg smiled hearing the words dad and I love you come from her lips. Whipping her tears he smiled and kissed her forehead, "I love you too Tris, and I always will!" Taking her hand he lead her down the street to the grocery shop. "I'll let you pick out what we should get!" Grabbing a basket he tucked the handles into the crook of his shoulder and kept hold of her hand.

  • Tris smiled, walking into the store alongside him. After they got a few basic foods, they headed to the zoo. Tris had silently teleported the food home, so now all that was left was having a good time. Sunlight was streaming through the clouds behind them and the zoo's golden gates glittered slightly from far off. "It looks amazing!" Tris exclaimed, dashing through the parking lot. The walls of the zoo were painted with various different animals and landscapes, with colors both new and familiar to the young girl. She smiled, pausing by the wall to wait for her Dad, while admiring a beautiful painting of a jaguar stalking through a sun dappled forest.

  • Greg laughed seeing the girl as happy as she was. Walking over to her he put an arm around her shoulder and pointed to the picture. "I never told you but my wife was a vet so one year she went over to Africa to study the migration and breeding patterns of jaguars and lions! She actually brought home some stuff so I'll have to show it to you when we get back!" Then buying admission passes he waited for her to come over.

  • Tris nodded absentmindedly. Her eyes rested on the cart across the street, filled with fresh fruits and vegetables; she turned back to Greg and smiled once she noticed that he was busy buying admissions passes. Good, Tris thought, that gave her plenty of time to grab a snack and get back before he noticed she was gone. Darting across the parking lot, she dashed past the cart and grabbed a pear. The peddler looked up, noticing her theft, and began to dash after her while yelling at bystanders for help. One man, seeing her in time, stretched out his foot and Tris winced as she tripped.

The girl stretched her hands out and braced herself against the concrete as the peddler caught up to her. A nearby police officer stepped out of the crowd and handcuffed her quickly, returning the pear to the salesman. After listening to the witnesses and collecting the information for his report, he dragged Tris over to his police car. "Do you have parents, kid?" he asked gruffly, as he gently guided her into the backseat.

Tris bit her lip, watching her newly adopted father stride towards them from across the parking lot. "Over there," she whispered, pointing to Greg as her cheeks grew red in embarrassment.

  • Greg looked over just in time to see the girl getting handcuffed. "HEY!" He shouted as he walked quickly over to the police officer. "UN-cuff her! Now!" Then reaching into his pocket he pulled out a small badge that was similar to his. "Trust me, she means no harm!" The badge showed he was now retired but had served in the police force for many years.

  • The officer frowned, gently pulling Tris to her feet and taking the handcuffs off of her. The child quickly darted to the other side of Greg and the officer rolled his eyes. "Look, mate. Keep a better eye on your kid, okay? She was trying to steal from this fruit peddler and, if it weren't for that man being kind enough to trip her, she would have gotten away with it. Next time I'll have to take her in to the station. Is that clear?" he asked, his tone respectful but still scolding.

Tris shuddered, backing away a little further. Next time she'd have to be more careful, so that no one would miss what she'd taken and Greg wouldn't catch her. She needed to pay him back somehow and feeding herself seemed perfect. Maybe she could help get him some other things too, but only if she didn't embarrass him. Sighing, she stared at the ground in silence.

  • "I understand officer." Greg nodded as he placed a hand on the girls shoulder. Bending down once the officer was gone he smiled at her and said, "Next time wait till the peddlers not watching!" Chuckling he stood up and took her hand in his. He knew how she lived for some years and knew there was no way for him to stop her so he just gave her a tip so she wouldn't get in trouble!

  • Tris stared at him in confusion. Why wasn't he disappointed with her? Was stealing okay now? Frowning, she got to her feet and followed him into the zoo, without a word. Tris didn't speak the rest of the time they were there, though she did seem to light up whenever they were around the big cats. When they headed home, she looked over at the peddler's stand, seeing that it was deserted.

Breaking away from Greg, she walked up to the empty tip jar and silently formed a single ruby in her palm. Without a word, she tossed it in the jar and left. The peddler stared after her in amazement but Tris didn't return or even nod. Quickly, she ran back to Greg and they walked home. Then she vanished upstairs into her room.

  • Greg sighed as he watched her all day as she stood in silence. Trying to create a conversation but getting no feed back. Watching her place the ruby in the tip jar he smiled. That's what he was getting at, she knew the right thing to do but sometimes people mess up. But you always do the right thing in the end it seemed. Leaving her be he sat down on the couch and read a little bit.

  • Tris silently stared out the window, eyes glinting in the light as it faded away. Sighing, she slipped into her closet and closed the door, curling up on a pile of clean clothes and staring at the wall. Tris sighed, brushing her hair back and curling into a ball. She didn't want to go down and bug him at the moment. She'd rather stay here and worry about the peddler at the zoo. Even after Greg had served dinner, she hadn't come down. Finally, she slipped into a deep sleep.

  • Greg sighed as he put away the leftovers and turned everything off in the shop. Going upstairs he brought his book and set it in his room. Then going into her room he walked over to the closet and opened it. Picking her up softly he carried her over to the bed and laid her down. Tucking her in he kissed her forehead and turned on the night light and left the room.

  • Tris got up in the middle of the night and wandered back into the closet. Curling back onto the pile of clothes, she fell asleep. Sometime the next morning, she got to her feet and yawned. Searching through the pile of clothes, she pulled on some jeans and a t-shirt then silently curled against the back wall. The store was beginning to open but Tris hadn't come down for breakfast or anything. The bell downstairs rang softly, signalling the first customer of the day.

  • Greg had fixed u0p breakfast and left it on her side table in her room, now down in the shop he helped the first customer but in t he back of his mind he was more worry than he let on. What was wrong with her? Had he lost he fatherly ways.

  • Tris slipped out of the closet like a rabbit in the open after he'd left. She slowly tip-toed over to the food then gulped it down in large hurried bites before stumbling back into the dark. On a whim, she wandered to the top of the stairs, she began watching the shop from the top of the stairs. Suddenly, one of the customers noticed her and pointed. Startled, Tris vanished back into the closet again.

  • "Thats just my daughter Tris." Greg smiled reassuring the customer. "She's terribly shy!" He said with a warm chuckled. Once everyone had cleared out he locked up the shop and made lunch. Taking it upstairs to her he entered the room slowly. "Hey Tris...You hungry?" He asked as he carried a plate for her and some for him in both hands.
