Tris didn't reply, eyes tightly closed and wrapped into a protective ball. She was muttering a single phrase over and over, in between muffled sobs. "Please don't hurt me. Please don't hurt me.... Please don't hurt me. I was a good girl. Please don't hurt me." She refused to uncurl from her ball, scared to death of that needle and not willing to take the chance of being hurt. Shaking like a leaf, she slowly looked up at Greg. "PL-Please don't hurt me," she repeated, tears slipping down her eyes like rain.

Placing the needle on the floor he said, "Tris! I'm not going to hurt you! I never would!" His heart felt like it was being stabbed from those few words. Not ever expecting them to come out of a child's mouth towards him. Tears pricked at his eyes and he quickly whipped them before she could notice. He felt like this was a mistake, maybe he wasn't as good as a dad as he remembered. Maybe he was just the opposite, a terrible human being, a terrible father.
-
Tris stared at him as he put the needle down, still scared but not as much anymore. Slowly, she crept out of the bed and past the needle. She quietly curled up at his side. "N-No n-needle?" the girl asked, eyes wild but curious.
-
Taking the needle in his hand he snapped it in halfway and let it go down the vent. "No needle..." Smiling he kissed her softly and said. "Now how about we got some more food into you. Whatever you want!" He smiled helping her up and carrying her downstairs and setting her on the couch. Lighting the fire he went to the kitchen waiting for her response.
-
Tris frowned but silently nodded and walked downstairs with him. She silently made some soup and served it out. Sighing softly, she ate her share then began the dishes. Biting her lip, she silently settled by the fireplace, slightly confused.
-
Greg finished up the dishes and handed her a tall glass of water. "Here...This will make you feel better." Letting her relax he draped a soft velvet blanket over her. Looking around the shop he asked, "You want to listen to a story?"
-
"Okay," Tris whispered, curling up on his lap and silently sipping at the glass of water. "Dad..... What will happen to me when I die?" she asked in a delightfully gloomy voice.
-
Greg looked at her and kissed her forehead. "That won't happen for a while but when it does happen you'll go to place called Heaven. Where anyone you have ever loved will be up there. And you'll be young forever and it will be perfect." He had thought about this subject and the theories about Heaven alot ever since his wife and son died.
-
"No. I'm a bad girl... I'm going to hell. Evangeline said so," Tris whispered softly. Biting her lip, she curled closer into her ball. "What are we going to read today?" Tris asked softly, not really thinking about that. Her mind had strayed to her days on the streets. Distant shouts filled her ears and her eyes stared off into sunsets that had long ago passed. Shivering, she pulled away from memories of street gangs, and blood shed without reason. Everything now and then was jumbled into a crazy collage in her head. She wasn't sure about anything anymore. Sighing, she closed her eyes and laid her head on his lap, hoping it all would vanish.
-
"You're not going there! That place is for really bad people! Forget what that mean person said." Then seeing she didn't want to really talk about it he grabbed his favorite book. Pulling her onto his lap and placing a blanket on her he opened up "Paddington" and read softly so she could fall asleep.
-
Tris laughed, trying to picture a teddy bear that lived off marmalade and honey. Smiling, she stretched then turned and watched the fire as Greg read to her. The light flickered warm and strong, like liquid gold mixed with fire. Tris shuddered, pulling her eyes from the light as her head throbbed. Damn migraine. Trembling, she closed her eyes and pictured the bear again. Maybe things would be kind for once and she would just fall asleep soon.
-
Seeing she was almost asleep Greg picked her up continuing to read the story in one hand. Carrying her up the steps he set her gently in her bed. Tucking her in and turning a heater on near her bed he finished the story and kissed her forehead softly. Leaving the book on the night stand he turned on a night light and left the room.
-
Tris yawned, slowly waking up the next morning and climbing out of bed. Her eyes rested on the book and she smiled, recognizing the bear on the cover. Smiling lightly, she wandered over to the door and curled up by the heater, feeling her migraine throb again. Images of bears and marmalade filled her head and she slowly slipped back asleep, curled into a tight ball right next to the space heater.
-
Greg stood in the kitchen making breakfast. Whistling along to music on the radio, hearing her soft foot steps he placed a plate on the table for her and a glass of water. Going upstairs he knocked on the door, "Tris..." He whispered opening the door slightly.
-
Tris whimpered lightly and curled closer to the heater, eyes still closed in sleep. She silently pulled her blanket tighter around her shoulders then fell still again, murmuring something undetectable. Shivering again, she curled into a tighter ball, pulled the blanket over her eyes, and went back to her dreams, or rather nightmares.
-
Greg went over to her and rubbed her back as he turned the heater up and placed a heavier blanket on her and a pillow under her head. Kissing her forehead he said, "Tris...Do you feel OK?" Placing his hands on her cheek to see if she had a fever.
-
Tris nodded, gently hugging him. "I'm perfectly okay. I just have a really bad headache," she replied, purring softly as the heat soaked into her skin. Smiling, she stood slowly and wandered downstairs with him. "What are we going to do today, Dad?"
-
"Here, let me get you something for that." Smiling as he walked down the stairs with her. Setting a kettle on the stove and a tea bag he pulled down two cups and waited for the tea to finish. "Um..." Looking the fridge he saw it was starting to get barren. "We need to go grocery shopping and then we can do anything you want!"
-
Tris nodded slightly. "O-okay," she said softly, unused to the near total lack of discipline. She was confused by his behavior and the unclear rules. Shrugging, she wandered upstairs, got dressed, and came back down. "Do we need to run the shop today or can we go to the zoo?" she asked curiously, green eyes sparkling as she watched him.
-
"Oh! The zoo sounds fun! I haven't been there in forever!" Smiling he poured the tea and bent down hugging her and handing her the glass. "We can go to the zoo and then grab grocery's!" Smiling as he poured a glass for himself and said, "Do you want anything else to eat?"
