    Aekoli saw him wince and rummaged through her bag, finding her headphones. She put them over his ears- good thing they were big and fit over his ears. She flicked the "on" switch and the noise-canceling went into effect. It would get rid of all the little noises and dulled the louder ones.
    "It's a place where a big car, called a bus, carries people around town as long as they pay." the big bus pulled in front of them, and Aekoli waited as a small stream of people filed out and then grabbed Kaelen's hand, pulling him along with her into the bus. She managed to find the right amount of money for their fare, checking the map. They wouldn't be on there too long.

    He blinked and looked around, his hands reaching up to touch the headphones... just as she grabbed him and pulled him inside the large bus. Or... train. Whichever one it was!
    "Woah..." he mumbled, hoping he wasn't talking too loud. He couldn't hear a thing. Oh well.
    He stared around the train, looking over to see that there was a window. Would they see some of the city through the train? Cool! The train shifted forward and Kael grabbed the railing by the window for support, grimacing as he looked around at those already prepared for the movement.
    Too bad I wasn't part of this generation. He sighed and turned to the window, hoping that was what it was.

    Aekoli pushed open the window and let the wind blow, smiling. It was pretty empty at this point, so it was nice to let some air through. She hadn't been on a bus by herself before- or without her father- so it was pretty cool. She looked around, smiling as she saw a few people with dyed blue hair. Sure, all of them had another color or a weird sense of style, but who cared? It would make Kaelen feel better, right?

    He frowned, looking around at the people that had blue hair... but... he could tell. There were roots, different colors other than blue. Green, black, red, orange, pink... all different. None were truly blue.
    Koli's words caught his attention and he looked out of the train, frowning and walking over to her. "Okay," he mumbled, glancing back at the fake blue-haired people. It's not real... He frowned and looked down, glad he had his hood up still because his ears had twitched. "Let's go."
    Why he sounded so sad was unknown, even to him, but he took her hand and pulled her off the train as it stopped. "You first. You know him." He sighed, crossing his arms and following her, his eyes on the ground.

    Aekoli might have been loud, a little invasive and rude, brash and reckless but she wasn't oblivious. Her violet eyes turned to Kaelen and her face softened and lapt some of their happy glow. "Hey... What's wrong?" They were still walking, but she slowed down her pace.

    He flinched, frowning at her comment before looking away. "Nothing," he muttered. "I'm fine." Exhausted.
    Fine. His thoughts were even more stern sounding than his own words.
    He stopped for a moment and leaned against what people would have called a lamppost, but all he knew was that he needed to stop moving for a few moments. His eyes were closed and he stayed that way for about ten seconds before moving away and following her again.
    "I'm fine," he said again, and again the Being replied. It was getting irritating. Will you shut up! There was no response from the Being, its silence alarming Kaelen. But he could still feel its presence inside of him, and he relaxed again. "How much further?"
    It really was exhaustion. If they didn't find the place soon, he'd collapse in the streets. And that was never a good thing, for any kind of person.

    Aekoli frowned at him again, but took his hand and pulled him to the side when she realized she nearly missed Preston's apartment. She walked up to the fronts desk, asking, "Hi, my name's Aekoli. Can you ask Prestom if I could come up? He's room 214." The man nodded and asked, noddeding after a moment. Aekoli grinned and took Kaelen's hand once more.
    "We're going to ride an elevator. It's a box that lifts you up places so you don't have to use stairs." She whispered, stepping inside and punching the level 2 button."

    He stared at her blankly, only nodding when she had finished speaking. And then the box moved and he immediately curled up in the corner, hugging his knees to his chest as he looked around what Aekoli had called an 'elevator'. But he frowned as he saw her standing, and he slowly stood once more as well.
    "I don't like elevators," he muttered in his disdain, and when it stopped he clutched the bars that were around the box. Sighing, he walked out with Aekoli, now taking her hand in his. "I really don't like elevators..."
    He let her lead him, his weariness catching up bit by bit, and he eventually tuned everything around him out. He needed to focus on standing. Just standing...

    Aekoli stopped by door 214, looking back at Kaelen. She knocked on it, asking, "Are you alright?" Aekoli barely finished her sentence before she was suddenly scooped up in a hug, and loud laughter could be heard down the whole hallway. "Oh my gosh, Koli!"
    Preston had started spinning her around, and Aekoli couldn't help but have a huge grin on her face. "Pres!" he put her down and they gave each other a proper hug. "I never thought I'd see you again." Aekoli finally got a good look at his face and... wow. He had changed. Preston was way taller and was at least a head taller than her, and he looked very... muscled.
    Aekoli realized she was staring and blushed a little, turning to Kaelen. "Um, I hope you don't mind that I brought a friend..." Preston stepped forward, holding a hand out. "No, not at all!" his smiled turned into a frown. "Hey man, are you alright? You don't look so good..."

    Not only did he look so good, but he didn't feel so good either. Kael only had a few seconds before he leaned against the door frame with a shake of his head. Ouch...
    This is what exhaustion does when you do not listen to me.
    He didn't even have a chance to say anything to Aekoli before he slipped from the door frame and collapsed onto his knees, one hand holding his stomach as he bit the inside of his lip. I'm going to puke. No, I'm going to die.
    No, you are not. Relax.
    But Kaelen didn't want to relax. He just wanted to collapse onto a bed and stay there. He closed his eyes, shivering for a moment before finally blacking out.
    You are still being affected by using too much of your fire. I was wondering why the exhaustion hit you so suddenly. Of course, Kaelen wasn't listening. He was unconscious and shivering like he was in the middle of a blizzard.

    "Kael?!" Aekoli ran over, kneeling by him. Preston was already pulling Kaelen's arm aound his shoulder.
    "Here, let's get him to my bed." Aekoli took his other arm, though she didn't do much since Preston was much taller than her. The two headed over to Preston's bedroom, laying Kaelen down on the bed and covering him with a couple blankets.
    "What happened to him?" Preston asked, staring down at Aekoli's blue-haired friend.
    "I-I don't know... he wasn't acting weird until we got onto the bus..." she said, wide-eyed. "S-sorry, Pres."
    "Hey, it's OK... I just hope he's alright."
    "Yeah..."
    "I wasn't expecting you, so i was just about to go get a burger. I can cook something, though. Do you think you'll friend will eat soup?" Aekoli nodded, mute. She was a bit shocked at Kaelen's sudden collapse, and it was shocking.
    "Hey," he gave her another hug and ruffled her hair. "want to help me?" she nodded, and the two made their way into the kitchen, Aekoli glancing back at Kaelen.

    He shuddered, curling up into a tight ball as the sudden warmth of blankets surrounded him. Hm... looks like you have to explain yourself now. His ears twitched uneasily and he shivered again, pulling the blankets around him tighter as he shivered again and again.
    When I was younger, before you were here... my flames never hurt me. Why do they hurt me now?
    You are afraid of them. Afraid of how much power you have and what it could do. You are afraid of hurting anyone else, and that is why they backfire onto you.
    So... my fear of myself is why my flames hurt me?
    It is only my theory, but I would assume that is why. It makes sense, does it not? Before, you were only a child without a care in the world. You never had anything to fear when you were small. But when I cam to be with you, your power spiked and you accidentally hurt someone before I encased us in ice and we slept. Because of this, you are now always afraid of what you can do without even trying. You are afraid of hurting anyone else. Though you did not seem to have a problem killing those men.
    No... I had a problem with it. I haven't killed someone since we fell asleep. I... can't do that again. It takes a piece of my soul each time.
    Then do not kill. Protect. If someone dies because you are protecting someone else, you are not truly killing them. It is self-defense. Or... just defense, seeing as it is not yourself you are protecting.
    Like Koli...
    I never specified the girl, but... if you wish to protect her, then yes.
    The tension left him and he mumbled something into the pillow as he pulled the blankets closer, now truly falling asleep. For how long, though, he didn't know until he asked Aekoli.

    The warm scent of chicken soup soon filled the whole apartment, and Aekoli managed to catch up a little with Preston. "What have you been up to?" she asked, looking around. The apartment was nice, and Preston looked well. Neat as always.
    "Ah, just missed this town. My parents decided it was OK for me to go by myself now that I'm eighteen." sure, he was two years older than her but they were still the best of friends. Besides, Aekoli was almost 17.
    "I got a scholarship offer at the collage in town. It's not full, so I'm working."
    "Really? Wow, that's awesome!" she smiled at him, finishing pouring the cans of chicken broth in.
    "Yeah, it's pretty sweet. Oh, have you said hi to your aunt?" Aekoli flinched looking to the side.
    "N-no. You know we're not exactly on speaking terms..."
    "Oh... sorry. I just thought... well, we could all meet up, since I'm working for her and all-"
    "What?!" Aekoli looked at him, a shocked expression on her face, then she laughed. "Well, I suppose she'd take you, yeah. You're nice and tall and-"
    "Oh... I'm not a model... I just clean for her..." Aekoli's face turned red.

    His eyes flashed open and he stared into the darkness of the room, his blue eyes assessing the situation before he decided that it was best to just remain where he was. He could hear them talking from where he was, but their voices weren't what woke him up. It was the smell of food that had brought him back to the world of the living. Well, he was always alive, but he liked to think of his resting state as the world of the sleeping. Or clinically exhausted.
    Pointed ears twitching, Kael turned over onto his other side as his arm began to fall asleep, letting out a sigh as he buried his head under the blankets. I am... afraid of myself. That's why my powers backfire on me... He frowned, closing his eyes again and running a hand through his blue hair.
    "Fear... that's why..." he mumbled, sitting up only slightly. But it was enough to have the blankets fall around him as he stared at his hands. "Fear..." Afraid of what I can do. He looked away from his hands, staring at the nearest wall and sighing again. "I don't want to be afraid..."

    Preston picked up the pot and put to down, laughing at Aekoli. "It's alright. You're pretty enough to be a model too," Aekoli flushed.
    "W-what are you talking about?!" Preston laughed again, getting out bowls.
    "You are pretty, you know that. Hey, can you hand me some spoons?" Aekoli got them out but didn't look at Preston, her face too red.
    "Hey, why don't you check on your friend?" Aekoli nodded, running off, her face aflame.
    She carefully opened the door, peeking in, looking surprised as she saw Kaelen awake. "Hey... How are you feeling?" She asked, stepping in.

    "Depressed," he mumbled, not looking at her. That wasn't entirely true. He didn't feel completely depressed. More like... somber. I should have pretended to be asleep. Sighing, he tipped his head at her, watching her face for a moment before looking away again.
    "Strange. We both know so little about each other... and yet we can worry so much about the other. Just... strange," he said quietly, and he slid back under the blankets. But he didn't fall asleep again. "I suppose you're like that with anyone, though... right? If you just met someone, sort of became friends with them, and then they were suddenly hurt... you'd worry. I, on the other hand... Well I'm different. If I just meet someone, I can already tell whether they have a good soul or not. If they were hurt, I'd already know whether or not to leave them or to help them. It would be instinct, and nothing more."
    Where was he going with this? Nowhere, really. He didn't really know what to say. He was just... spouting stuff off the top of his head. "I'm not like you, Aekoli. I'm not like any of you."

    Aekoli stared at him silently a moment, before she pouted and put her hands on her hips. "This is too depressing." She flicked on the lights and pulled off the sheets. "You scare me half to death and now you're spouting awful nonsense. You are like us, Kael. And right now, you need what we need- food." She grabbed his hands, yanking him out of bed. "C'mon you party pooper. We have soup for you. You'll feel entree if you eat." She smiled at him, giving him a quick hug, not bothered by sudden closeness. He looked so sad, and Aekoli was determined to cheer him up. "You can smell it, can't you?"

    He thought about what to say before replying, but nodded. "Unfortunately," he said quietly, and let her lead him into the kitchen. Though I'm not very hungry...
    He couldn't bring himself to tell her that he had heard every one of their comments, nor could he manage to say that he really wasn't like them. He was different, and that wasn't just because of the Being. He was different because of something else... entirely. He didn't have the same kinds of morals as they did. He wasn't like them.
    But the smell of food flooded him and he began to ignore his thoughts, thinking back to the time Koli had dragged him out of her own house and took him shopping. At least those were happier times.

    Preston has set up the game, and smiled, seeing the two walk in. "Ah, you're up! Here, I have room for three!" He actually had room for four, but only set up three. "I hope you like chicken soup."

    There was a twinge of annoyance Kael felt suddenly and immediately, but he only nodded and thanked Preston quietly, staring down at the bowl. He really didn't want to eat, but Koli would force feed him if she had to. And he knew she would.
    Without making a sound, Kaelen picked up the spoon set beside his bowl and began to eat his soup quietly. He didn't talk, not like he wanted to anyway, and stared at the table as he finished. He didn't want any more. He was sure he'd throw up if he ate anything else.
    And then, without even thinking about what he was about to say, he looked at Aekoli. "So... I assume you haven't said anything to him?" he asked. He was referring to why they were even there. He looked at Preston. "And you didn't ask why she was alone with only me?" Why hadn't the other boy asked about Aekoli's father? There should have been some questions asked and answered, so why weren't there?
