Twilight watched intently as Applejack went for a third bottle, her eyes widening in examination. How does she consume so much alcohol and remain sober? The purple Alicorn thought. Though her vision was slightly blurred, she still attempted to look over the orange coated mare for any signs that Applejack was lacking in balance. This, of course, looked odd from Applejack's point of view, but that did not detour her from her examination.

"What are you doing, Sugar cube?" Applejack asked, after drinking about a third of the third bottle. The orange farm mare knew Twilight liked studying things, but just looking at her? It was odd.

"Sorry. Just... studying your consumption." She simply replied before she buried her muzzle in her second bottle.

Finishing her second bottle of cider, the purple coated Alicorn could barely see through her blurred vision. Her eyes began wondering around the fuzzy room, her eyes widening in awe. Rarely did Twilight drink, but when she did, she could not remember how joyous it was, mainly because of the hangover afterwards.
"So, what's been happenin' on the farm?" Yep, there goes the proper speech abilities.

(Can't remember where I found it, but someone did some research and posted it somewhere, along with some reasons. It is not definite however, but around that area.)
"Not much" Applejack said, relaxing. "Just the usual work". She looked over at Twilight, and could barely see the signs of drunkenness and laughed to herself.
Edit: I also found this, which gives reasons as to the ages, with different numbers. It is quite interesting.

Big Mac suddenly shot awake, gasping as he awoke from the nightmare. He looked around wildly till he spotted Smarty Pants.
He wrapped his hooves around the doll, shivering.
"It's one a those nights..." He whispered to himself.
OOC: Can we go off the assumption that Applejack and Big Mac's parents died when they were young, sometime shortly after having Apple Bloom???

That is sort of what my headcanon is for their parents.IC: "Well, if you must know, the library has been quite busy lately. It would seem there has been a sudden interest in a certain series of books." Twilight decided to tell Applejack of her happenings before scrambling for another bottle. With the bottle taken by Twilight, there was only two drinks left in the container.

Twilight allowed the farm pony to open the cap, but her hooves remained on the bottle. As Applejack began opening the drink, Twilight felt the orange coated mare's hoof against her own. She could not resist a blush as she lowered her hooves slightly.
