"Mom!" a meow of pure delight filled the air as a furry figure darted from the corner of the den towards her. He tripped over another apprentice and fell onto Ivystorm rather ungracefully. "Ah! sorry," he muttered. "Sorry Sorrelpaw," he said glanced back at the cat he'd tripped on. The other apprentice grinned at him and was trying not to laugh. Vortexpaw seemed to blush a bit before he picked himself up. "How are things in the medicine den?" he asked.
He had grown into quite a lanky almost ungangly youth who was rather ungraceful most of the time. But he'd probably grow out of that. He was sure it was obvious to his mother that he had a crush on Sorrelpaw the way he had reacted to her, but he tried to hide it anyways.

Vortexpaw looked a bit embarrassed when his mother first spoke. He didn't mind her saying that but in front of Sorrelpaw was well embarrassing. But then how was tripping over her and falling on his mother better? He'd already screwed it up so he pushed the worry away. Beside Sorrel seemed to have gone to sleep. "That's great! And I sure hope it will save lives," he said. At the compliment he tried to stand taller, more formal or something as he beamed with pride. "My training is going well Duskyrose is teaching me a lot, she said she's been impressed with my progress. We patrolled the border this morning and I caught a rabbit on the way back," he said. "Duskyrose told me to give it to the kits and queens." He paused a moment before continuing. "I miss seeing you though, maybe you could teach me herbs or something so I can come visit more," he said.

The moment of joy from his mother's praise on his hunting soon faded as she continued. A look of disappointment washed over him. He wanted to see his mother more often, he didn't really care about herbs, but he wanted to see her. It had been more of an excuse. He really didn't have much free time any more but he had hoped if his mother would make it official training that Duskyrose would let him have more time to see Ivy. He did his best to hide his disappointment though. "Alright, if I have time I'll come visit you. Duskyrose keeps me pretty busy though. I only just got back from training a short bit ago before you came in," he admitted. "Sure, what do you want to eat?" he asked trying to be polite and let his mother choose what they would eat. He wanted a bird of some kind but he'd let her choose.

Vortexpaw grinned at the bird, his mother knew him well. This had been his favorite since he'd started eating fresh kill. "Thanks," he said crouching down to pluck off the feathers before taking a bite of it, after he had his fill he pushed it to her he'd eaten about half.

Vortexpaw shrugged. "I don't know my mentor wouldn't tell me, she just said to meet her in the training clearing later, she said it was a surprise," he said. He had begun licking his paws to clean them.

Vortexpaw grinned. She wanted to watch him! Well that was kind of like spending time with her, which is what he wanted. "Of course you can!" he said happily a bit too loudly in his excitement.
[I'm leaving on vacation so this will be my last post for a while. I'm not temping Vortexpaw out, I'll just reply when I get back. So just FYI.]

Vortexpaw stood up and stretched a motion that seemed to cause some discomfort to him, simply due to the fact that he was sore from the prior days training. He said nothing of it though. "I should get going to training, I don't want to be late," he said. Then he paused. "What about my father? You never talk about him. All the other kits know their father's but I don't." He'd seen other parents come watch training usually a mother or father or both. But he'd never really considered it before, why he didn't have a father.

All thoughts of not being late to training were forgotten as Ivy answered. He was glad she had answered his question and had told him. It was his right to know in a way, but it wasn't at all the answer he was expecting.
Vortexpaw glanced at his paws for a moment not sure what to say about it. After a bit of hesitation he shook his head in disbelief. "That's-that's horrible," he said. "...I'm glad he's gone then," he added. He didn't want a father like that but the fact was it had happened when it shouldn't have. "I'm not ever going to be like him," he said determined. "Unlike him I'm going to be an honorable warrior, and if he ever comes back, I'll kill him." The fire in his eyes flickered with pure anger that someone had done that to his mother. It was wrong.
As quick as he was to anger though it faded just as suddenly as it had flared up. "...but does that mean you didn't want me? If it wasn't your choice?" he said a bit of sadness. He'd never doubted that his mother loved him before but now, had she not really wanted him?

Vortexpaw didn't resist when his mother licked his head like he was a kit. He didn't mind her doing that even though some would see it as childish and resist. A sense of relief washed over him when she spoke, she did want him and loved him. He hadn't known what he would've done or felt if she'd said anything different but he'd been afraid she'd say the opposite...and she hadn't. "But he...I," he started to protest. His father had done something very wrong and deserved to pay for it. But when he caught his mother's gaze he couldn't bring himself to say it, to argue. "Alright, I won't," he said. "I promise."

Vortexpaw leaned against his mother breathing in her familiar sent, a mix of herbs that always seemed to linger on her. He didn't know what herbs they were, to him it was just the smell of his mother. "I want to be like you when I grow up. Father or not, I have you and it's all I need," he said. He didn't mean he wanted to be a medicine cat, herbs were not his thing, but he wanted to be like her in how honorable she was and always did what was right.
