"In Egypt, cats were revered. The chosen animal of the gods, they were treated like kings and queens. They were thought to be able to speak to the divine, and in reality they actually could, which is what gave them their pompous air most of the time.
A few cats betrayed the gods, which led to their transformation into mortal human bodies. They retained many of their abilities, such as flexibility, balance, and night-vision, but lost their feline bodies.
The gods' vengeance was turned on its head as the population grew, and amassed honor, respect, and much money. Empires rose and fell, times came and went, but the Miren, as we called ourselves, survived, staying in the shadows like their furry ancestors.
Most of the Miren were wiped out during the pogroms and witch-burnings of the 18th and 19th centuries. A few survived, and most reside today just outside the small town of Oakenstone, New York, where we live.
Still, though, hunters seek us, hoping to take us to labs, or simply exterminate our race. Be careful of these hardhearted humans."

Personality:
While she may have the senile facade down pat, she is actually still sharp and very intelligent. She has ruled the Miren for fifty years, the longest since Queen Victoria (who was actually a Miren, believe it or not), and does not plan on giving it up anytime soon.
She is ruthless, and does not care who you are, if you hurt the Miren, she will make sure you wish you were never born. She is fearless, and a bit cold in her methods. She holds the Miren to strict obedience, and hates to be disobeyed.
While one may think her the enemy, she has reason for her actions. A lifetime of experience of dealing with hunters and other evil sorts has taught her to never trust anyone, a rhetoric she has passed along to her grandchildren.
Speaking of her grandchildren, they are perhaps the only people in the world for whom her real soft, sweet inner grandma appears for. She rarely punishes them, especially since their mother just died. She prefers Rudo over Odessa, as Dessa is much too independent for Penny to control, though Penny still loves her.
History:
During her 50 years as Queen, Penny has warded off 13 hunter attacks, one media news scandal, and killed approximately 20 people. She has not had an easy life, and most of her friends and family have died or sought refuge away from the clan.

History:
Her father abandoned her mother before Dessa was even born. He was a half-breed, part Miren, part human, and consorting with him got Dessa's mother kicked out all the way to sunny California. Dessa grew up fairly happy there. Her mother worked as a nurse in the local hospital, and times were happy. But Dessa's mother often had to work the night shift, so Dessa learned from an early age how to take care of herself.
Her mother started dating again five years ago, and got married after she found herself pregnant. Rudo was born, with diminished powers due to his father being a human, and his father soon ran off with his secretary. Being abandoned twice took a toll on Dessa and Rudo's mother, besides the fact she found out she had a brain tumor the day after her husband left her.
Her mother died a couple months ago, and with nowhere else to turn, Odessa took Rudo back to the place where she was born, the Miren Mansion. They've been here since.
