  • At the meek sound of Jade's voice Thomas got goosebumps running up his arm. This was the very thing that would have freaked him out three days prior, but now the boy delighted in it. If Jade wasn't in pain on the ground he would have ran to her with the biggest smile smeared on his face -- an expression that he succumbed to. But this was not the time. He turned, carefully hugging his left arm to his side, taking great caution not the move it around. His tired, aching feet squished across the moss-covered clearing as he made quick strides over to the green-eyed girl. Jade had an arm strained out for his reach and he grasped it with his right hand firmly. Something like fire shot through his veins at their touch, and a little grin did manage to escape -- though Thomas tried to remain serious. His father would have cringed if he saw his son now, and his mother would be expressionless as she usually was -- which has led Thomas to believe she has no thoughts or feelings. It was actually exciting to think that his parents would not approve of such immature, love-struck actions, it made Thomas want to embrace it more. Perhaps that was the rebel side of him, but it was most likely more on the lines he and his parents were nothing to each other except ways of satisfying all anger and hate. The boy would have loved to show Jade to his parents, wanting to see the reaction they'd have when their son, who had already failed them by failing his first mission, actually cared of nothing but a girl.
"Love is for the stupid, and for the city folk", his father often said.
"Love means nothing, it is nothing", said his mother in her robotic voice.
They didn't love each other. The Colony just put the two of them together because they were about to turn thirty and had only drowned themselves in their job as rebels until that point. Now sixteen years later the only thing that changed was the they were married and had a son. All former thoughts and actions were still used, they went about their life normally, as if nothing significant happened at all.
When Thomas actually thought hard about it, the real reason he was finding the idea of leaving so easy was because of them. They were nothing but the people who brought him into this world to him, and would remain that way. They weren't about to change, so why give his heart to a pair of people that wouldn't do the same back?

Pulling on Jade's arm gently to stand her upright, Thomas wrapped his arm around her side, still absorbed in his thoughts about his parents.
