Hazel is a complicated girl with an intricate character. She's been through some really scary and dark times in her life but she's of the mindset 'nothing can break me.' She's ashamed of a past that wasn't her fault, particularly how she dealt with it, which is why she refuses to talk about her history and will blank anyone that asks.
Hazel appears polite, shy and pleasant to all acquaintances, but close friends know this is not the case. She is quick to anger, and is fully aware of this, which is why she is hesitant to make friends because of her fear that she'll hurt them.
Hazel has a sharp and witty mind that she loves to use to wind people up with clever words. Her skills, that she tends to keep to herself, include singing, guitar & piano playing, drawing and creative writing.

Background
"Hazel had a peaceful first ten years of her life, with her first pony called Oreo living on their small but idyllic private land in rural Seattle. It was the night of her eleventh birthday when the fatal car crash occurred, killing her eight year old sister, leaving Hazel with serious injuries, her father with injuries to his head that affected his impulse control, and her mother with serious depression.
Her life took a downward turn after that. Her mother turned to alcohol to deal with stress, and her father changed completely and became violently abusive. He blamed Hazel for the crash and death of her sister, and after a while, Hazel believed it too.
Three years later, on a fateful November night, Hazel went to the bathroom to discover her mom had committed suicide. In tears, she told her father, hoping that he would be as sad as she was and they could console eachother. Instead, he flew into a drunken rage, beating Hazel and telling her it was her fault. He picked her up, put her in the car and told her that he'd teach her a final lesson.
He drove off, speeding and swerving violently, and Hazel was scared for her life. Soon after the second fatal car crash in her life happened, after some cold hours Hazel came round and found herself trapped in an upturned car with the corpse of her father.
She phoned the police and an ambulance that took her to hospital where she was treated for a broken leg, fractured ribs and concussion. The police got in contact with her vaguely related adult cousin and her husband, who eagerly took her in and raised her along with their kids.
It took a while for Hazel to move on from her past but the arrival of Carbon Copy on her fifteenth birthday helped her a lot.

An old, tiny wrought iron pendant of half a heart. One half she wears around her neck on a black thread, and the other half is woven around the cheekpiece on Carbon's head collar with coloured threads. It was hand crafted by her great grandmother, who claimed it to have powers of bond, love and good luck. Hazel thinks that's bullsh*t but admits that she feels closer to her horse when she knows they're both wearing it.

Siblings
Will and Eleanor, 18, non identical twins that are the son and daughter of Hazel's adult cousin and her husband whom Hazel lives with. She counts them as her siblings.
Also, her real sister Anna, who is deceased and would be fourteen now.

Eleanor tries her hardest to be friendly, polite and charming all the time, despite private suspicions that she'll never be good enough eating away inside her. She struggles to find who she really is, constantly jumping from friend group to friend group and style to style, changing her beliefs and principles as she goes. However, that is way horses are so important to her; they never judge you on trivial matters and love you for who you are.
Eleanor is quiet and shy, and has a pretty bad blushing problem that she absolutely despises. All that being said, she is extremely loyal and trustworthy, two qualities that mean she often gets taken advantage of.

Background
Eleanor has been lucky enough to have a pretty privileged life, with a loving family and lots of money. She loved horses as a child and never really learned to ride properly, but would spend all her time with the family shetland and got bullied in middle school for this. She got called a 'dumb country girl', 'country bumpkin', 'smelly horse girl', and various other unintelligent retorts that affected her quite badly.
Luckily she was very close with her twin brother Will, who happened to be popular, and he helped her pull through all the bad times.
As Eleanor got older she got a lot more popular, especially with boys, which she thought amazing at the time; but it turned out none of them were sincere relationships and it was just her good looks and trusting personality that got taken advantage of. Girls would pretend to like her so they could be popular too but would often ditch her as they found better friends.
On Eleanor's sixteenth Christmas, after three years of riding, she found Delusion (Della) standing in their driveway with a red bow around her neck. This caused her to lose 'friends' at her barn, who thought she was spoiled and didn't deserve a horse, but she proved them all wrong by forming an incredible bond with Della and finding were her true self lies.
