He was average in grades, looks, and popularity. He honestly didn't care though. All he cared about was making it out of high school and into the real world. He wanted to leave the petty environment he had been stuck in since sixth grade and find something to do with his life. Because even though he was okay with being average himself, he was not okay with being stuck in an average high school in an average town in an average state. He was sick of the drab, he wanted fab That's really all you need to know about Conner Smith, except for the fact that he had a best friend, a best friend who he couldn't help but fall in love with.

    ---

It was about a month into the school year, a dreary day in September, and Conner was just going through the motions. All of his classes seemed to be getting more and more boring, and Conner could barely stay awake. There were only two things that kept him coming to this torturous place. The first, escape from his hometown. You might assume that he would feel sentimental about this place, but no. He only cared about a few things here. His parents and pet dog, and also his best friend. And she was the second reason why he stayed. Because she made hell less hot.

Arabella Edwards, the least popular girl in the entire school. Did she care? As a matter of fact.. No she didn't. She had all she could ever dream of having. She had parents, a baby sister, a bestfriend whom she cared about alot and friends that actually cared about her. She was happy with her life, though she was eager to be out of highschool. She did fine with her schoolwork. Always got good grades as such, though she didn't enjoy it much she thought it was a waste of time and energy.

Arabella had two things she loved to do. Photography, and hanging out with her bestfriend. If those were the only two things she had in life she would be happy and content. She absolutely loved photography and was quite good at it as well. In fact she was taking a class in school on photography and that was basically the only class she actually enjoyed.

Anyways.. It was a dreary September morning. Arabella had made it to school a little earlier to take a few photos of the beautiful oak tree outside in front of the school. And that's what she was doing now. So intent on taking pictures she didn't notice anything else.

He stifled a chuckle as he moved quietly toward her, intent on scaring the living daylights out of her. When he was close enough to grab her arm, he did, gently of course, so as not to hurt her. Using the deepest voice he could muster, Conner shouted his best friend's full name. "ARABELLA EDWARDS, just what do you think you're doing!" He held back a laugh and eagerly awaited her reaction. She never paid any attention to anything whilst practicing photography, so he always used the chance to mess with her.

Arabella was about to take another picture when she heard a loud, deep voice behind her and something tug on her arm. She instantly shrieked and whipped around, her eyes wide. Luckily she hadn't dropped her camera due to it hanging around her neck. "Connor smith!" She yelled playfully and slapped his arm. "You know I hate when you do that." She muttered quietly and rolled her eyes. Of course she knew he was only acting like a boy, maybe even a kid. She laughed a bit and shook her head. "I'm never going to get used to that." She added then waved her hand towards him. "I'm trying to take pictures here." She spoke. "Do you mind?" She asked and turned back around to take another picture.

Conner grinned and rolled his eyes. "Yes, I do mind," he joked, walking around so he was in front of the tree. He struck an ostentatious pose, throwing his arms out and his head back. "Photograph me like one of your oak trees," he said, mocking the movie Titanic. He chuckled and looked at her. "Okay, so I know you love taking pictures of everything... But a tree?" he teased, putting his arm around her shoulders and raising an eyebrow.

    (it's alright!)

Arabella watched him for a minute as he did his little pose and she shook her head slowly with an amused expression on her face. "You need help." She commented then arched an eyebrow as he mentioned something about taking pictures of a tree. "Hey.." She muttered. "It's a beautiful tree, I can't help it." She added then shimmied her way away from him and stuck out her tongue in a playful manner. She turned back towards the tree and took another picture before turning to face him. "Alright, alright.. I'm done." Arabella finally said and smiled.

"Good, because we need to get to class. Otherwise we'll fail," he carried out the sound of the L and began to walk away. There was a swing to his gait and he was laughing softly. He stopped suddenly and turned around. "Speaking of failing, how'd you do on that English paper?" Conner himself had gotten a seventy-nine percent. So he had passed, but not with flying colors.

Arabella rolled her eyes and turned her camera off quickly and carefully slipped it into her bag. She looked up and ran to catch up with him then grinned when he mentioned the paper. "I got like an eighty-six I think." She replied. "Can't remember." She added. "I'm just glad it's over. Didn't think I had a life worth living while we were stuck doing that stupid paper." She added. "But it was fine. Wasn't that hard, just time consuming, ya feel me?" She already asked that last part whenever she was trying to explain something. She'd say 'ya feel me' so that way she would know if someone would understand what she was trying to say or not.

"Still, I got like, a high C on it." He laughed and shook his head. "But y'know, I get that grades matter and all that crap... But why can't we experience the world right now? Why do we have to wait?" Conner didn't get serious a lot, in fact, he joked to avoid serious situations, but when he actually dug a little deeper, he became pretty philosophical. "I mean, I want to live my life in the time when I can enjoy living my life, y'know? Like... Like... Butterflies! They come out of their cocoons and just get to fly away, right?" The boy was not an expert on Butterflies, so sadly, he had no idea of the specifics of butterfly metamorphosis and what happened after. He was actually hoping that maybe Arabella would know, so she could take his side.

Arabella glanced at him and arched an eyebrow as she smiled faintly. "Yeah I know." She murmured in agreement. "But butterflies only have a certain amount of time to love and it's very very short." She explained. "It's not all fun and games for them either." She spoke. "I would love it though if we could just love our lives without a care in the world." Arabella said then became silent as they both walked into the school. "I can't wait until we get outta highschool."

Conner exclaimed with a groan, chuckling after. He turned and smirked at her. "I've got to get to class before I start my life though," he rolled his eyes, strolling towards his locker. He turned the combination and snatched his math notebook and a pencil out of the locker. "Ugh, math." He glared at the book, wishing he had laser eyesight like Superman so he could just burn the book.

She nodded her head and chuckled softly. "Me too.. See you later." She called over her shoulder as she headed towards her locker quickly and turned the combination, taking out her chemistry binder and notebook quickly she shut the locker door then headed down the hall towards her classroom. She entered and took a seat near the back and slipped out a pencil from her bag and began to chew on the end of it as she watched students file into the room.
