The price of deep sleep, it turned out, was dreams, and these began to come to him the longer he slept. Perhaps, though, it was more like reliving memories than simply dreaming, for he found himself thrown back to the events of a month before, to dressing in his very best clothes and hesitantly slipping out of his room, almost afraid of the day ahead and yet very excited about it, for he was no longer a child. The dream shifted to his mother, who fastened his cloak with gentle hands before embracing him, and the proud smile of his father. The banquet that night had not been large, for he was the youngest prince and a bit of an oddity, but he hadn't minded that. It was only once the dancing began that everything began to go wrong. His father had fallen first, after drinking from a poisoned cup. Benjamin had at first though it was merely a trick, but no trick could end so devestatingly. Certain guests, some that he knew and some who were strangers, drew swords, taking his brothers by surprise and slaughtering them. His sweet, gentle mother had ushered him into a corner and stood in front, trying to protect him. She had taken his sword, showing a surprising adeptness with the weapon, but she had been killed as well, and then the men had come for him, their drawn swords covered with the blood of his family and those who had tried to stop them. Benjamin woke with a start, shaking with silent terror.

Enna had only been lightly sleeping, snuggled up close to Benjamin. Though he soon began to flinch, his breathing and heart rate sped up. This quickly shook the young girl from the clutches of sleep, she shifted away slightly so she could meet his eyes, dismayed to find them wide with terror. She could only guess what he had seen play out behind his eyelids. Enna silent rested a slightly trembling hand against his cheek, unsure what she could say or do as she gently ran a hand through his hair for a few moments, snuggling back up close to him and taking his hand in her free one. Tiny tears glimmered in her eyes out of sympathy and sorrow, she timidly hugged him, not wanting to over step the line but wanting to reassure him and remind him she was always here for him. She knew he couldn’t speak words to express what he had seen even if he wanted to which slightly left her in the dark, unable to say the right words of reassurance for what ever situation the dream had contained or consisted of. So instead she just hugged and huddled up to the shaking and trembling boy with out a word.
-
He tensed slightly when she touched his cheek, but when she ran her hand through his hair tears sprang to his eyes. His oldest brother, Jonathan, had always seemed to be ruffling his hair for one reason or another, and the mere touch of her hand to his hair was enough to remind him of his brother and set off a whole new chain of memories. When she hugged him, he rested his head against her shoulder and let himself cry, weeping for his dead family. It was the first time he had let himself do this - when they were on the way to the castle, there was always a guard watching and he hadn't dared to cry, and in the prison he was always in too much pain to shed tears for his family. Here in the tower, the pain was no less, but there was someone whose shoulder her could cry on, and he was taking advantage of it.
-
Enna closed her eyes tightly, only hugging him tighter and huddling closer, her eyes moist with tears of empathy. She let him cry, just whispering to him softly things like “ssh..” yet she didn’t really want to silence him. Grateful she was allowed to see such weakness. She lightly nuzzled him, resting the side of her head against his. She eventually fell silent, loyally remaining close to the crying boy and respectfully allowing him to mourn for as long as he wanted. A single tear trickled down her cheek I’m going to get you out of here Benjamin, I promise she thought to herself. She didn’t open her eyes. Thinking about how he had tensed in response to her touching is cheek, then how he had started to cry as she touched his hair, she felt slightly guilty.
-
For a while he stayed there, weeping, silent sobs shaking his body. Finally, though, his tears ran dry and he could not cry anymore. The sobs slowly shrank until they were mere tremors, but still he stayed in her arms needing some small comfort for the grief he felt. He knew no comfort could ever erase it, but it helped to know that someone had seen what he was going through and cared about him. When even the tremors had died away, still he stayed, deciding to let her be the one to choose to let go of him. Benjamin laid his head on her shoulder, his eyes red with crying but half-closed, his breathing deep but still catching in his throat every now and then.
-
Enna didn’t fall asleep for a time, just listening to his silent sobs and nuzzling him, thinking of her own past and the basic outline of his own. She sighed softly, never had she been this close to him but she didn’t mind, she felt utterly exhausted. She lightly nuzzled him once he seemed to be slowly stopping, the sobs easing and his breathing becoming steadier. Only then did she give into the need to sleep. Exhausted but worried for Benjamin. She hoped he would be alright, she needed to start forming a plan soon.
OOC Time Skip?
-
(Sure - how far? I'll reply with some IC narration when I know. ;) )
-
OOC I have no idea but we need a bit of action, lol. Because I'm starting to come at a loss on what to write.
-
(Same. :) I'll skip forward a few weeks, then.)
Over the next couple weeks, Benjamin's wounds slowly healed, and finally he was able to move about without much pain. Each day he would coax Enna into eating at least one of the meals, and each night he huddled close to her for warmth. The weekly floggings had stopped, possibly because of the princess, but he was still called before the king at the end of each week, and each time he was given the choice to stay in the tower or serve the king with his gift. Each time he refused and was brought back to the tower, and the chain was locked about his wrist once again. He hated it, but knew there was nothing he could do. The days were getting colder, and more of the straw was used to keep the wind out of the tower. New straw was brought in, which left more dust, and one morning he glanced between the girl and the dusty floor and raised an eyebrow, silently asking if she wanted to form a drawing, a plan, or a story.

OOC coolio :)

Enna had hated being separated from Benjamin, protesting greatly. The girl had grown unquestionably trusting towards him. If he wrote to her ‘jump off a cliff’ she most likely would without question. Every time he was taken she would pace and worry for him, if he was being beaten, flogged, if he would ever be brought back, if they would use her as leverage against him. She had spoken to him one night, telling him to never give into the king no matter what and that she would get them out of here. She knew if he agreed to the king she would be trapped here alone, he would be manipulated. She shuddered every time she thought of it. Enna was becoming easier into coaxing to have some food, she was less afraid to huddle up to him to seek warmth, especially since the cold was setting in. She sat there quietly, feeling restless and closed in, the circular walls that surrounded her. She looked up at Benjamin in utter confusion before following his gaze, her eyes widened as she realised what he was offering. For the first time Enna beamed in pure joy at the prospect that he was willing to draw and write with her. She gave a happy nod though at a loss on what to write or draw, she wondered if she even could anymore. -
He smiled when he saw her face, and moved as far as the chain would let him. 'Story, drawing, or plan?' he wrote in the dust at the very edge of his reach. He would be perfectly willing to make or draw a story with her if that was what she wanted, but it had been more than a month and a half since he had been captured, about a month of which he had spent in either the dungeon or the tower. He wanted out, but he knew that they couldn't rush into it blindly. If they failed, they would surely be separated, and the might even be killed. He knew they would not kill him unless they had to, but he was worried for her safety.
-
Enna wished she could take the chain off him, give him a short amount of relief. It was cruel. And she didn’t think he could or would run. So it wasn’t necessary. Mind you none of this was necessary in her opinion. She thought for a long moment. She knew they should be planning. But she wanted to forget all this. Even just for a moment. And so she drew a simple beaming young girl’s face with cat ears at cute angles. With trembling hands she managed to write next to the little face ‘A story through drawing’ she giggled, delighted to see she had become messy with her writing but not lost her skill in drawing and could still write in a readable style, her spelling and more complex wording slowly coming back to her. She looked up at Benjamin quietly and curiously, she didn’t care for her safety, only his.
-
He nodded, then quickly added a body and a tail to her drawing, placing a bridge beneath the girl's feet and adding a few lines beneath to suggest water. The idea of a human with cat ears was strange to him, but he supposed that they would probably hate the water just as much as cats did, and therefore would probably want to get across the bridge as quickly as possible. The drawing was not amazingly good - it was difficult to draw the way he wanted to when he could only trace shapes in the dust - but he had also tried to keep it small so they would have room. He much preferred his writing to his drawing, for although he could not use the pen he was accustomed to, the words were still written in a simple but elegant style. He couldn't say as much as he wanted to, but what he could write down he could at least write down nicely.
-
Enna stared at the drawing for a few moments thoughtfully, adjusting the face to be in a silent shout, her hand outstretched towards the water as though reaching for something. Her fear of the water seeing to have been replaced. She knew her drawings were most likely terrible. But was enjoying this. It helped the time pass. She hoped he didn’t mind drawing. They could write of course. Enna drew the night sky over head as best she could completed with a crescent moon. She missed actual paper, pens and pencils. Yet she wasn’t going to complain, settled at his side and not speaking a word. She never felt much need to.
-
As she drew her night sky, Benjamin carefully drew a small clump of trees near the end of the bridge. Hiding among them and peeking out, he drew another cat-human, this one a boy who was watching the girl with wide eyes. He hesitated a moment, then reached over and traced the outline of a fish in the water, so the girl would have something to look at. Cats like fish, in his experience, so perhaps this girl would as well. He glanced shyly over at Enna to see if she approved of this. Even though they had grown closer in their weeks in the tower, he had never drawn a story with her before, and there was a strange fluttering sort of feeling within him, something that was both happy and nervous.
-
Enna smiled, more than happy to watch Benjamin contribute and draw. She always got slightly excited when he started to draw. The thrill of what he would draw was filled with endless possibilities. She giggled as he drew a fish, realising he was looking at her she looked up at him quietly, a warm, small smile danced over her lips. She carefully drew the girl laying a flower beside the fish, redrawing the girl now stepping towards the boy. Slightly shy and timid, her ears flattened at a rather cute angle. The girl had had second thoughts about killing or capturing the fish. She looked back up at the prince at her side, her turn to be shy and seek his approval.
-
He saw that she was looking toward him for approval, and returned the smile she had given him. Drawing like this was not exciting in the way that archery or horseback riding had been, but he rather liked it. It felt...nice. Benjamin moved over to the second drawing of the girl, adding in the boy again. He had stepped out of the woods this time, holding something behind his back and regarding the girl shyly. Benjamin glanced over at Enna again, smiling down at her.
-
Enna giggled slightly, glad he had given her a smile of approval. She was glad she could see and make the prince smile. Enna blinked and watched as he drew the boy again, she looked about as curious and excited as the girl's face that she now redrew. The took a closer step to the boy, looking no less shy or friendly, though now very curious. Enna sensed Benjamin's gaze on her and she looked up at him again, her eyes almost asking what would be behind the drawing's back. Never had her eyes been so alight since she had been thrown in this place, she looked a bit like a child. Enna gave another tiny giggle, smiling up at Benjamin, she couldn't wait to see what he would draw next.
-
He heard her laugh twice, which amazed him. It was the first time he had heard her laugh, and the sound was refreshing in this dismal place. Seeing the excitement and curiosity in her gaze, he could not help but hope that he did not disappoint her. Benjamin hesitated, considering changing what he had planned for the boy to be holding, then decided against it. If she didn't like it, then she didn't like it. With slightly trembling fingers but a small smile tugging at his lips, he redrew the boy, who had now taken his hands out from behind his back and was holding out a small bouquet of flowers. The boy's expression and posture were a mix between joy and hope, with just a touch of fear, as if he were wondering how the girl would react to the flowers.
-
Enna watched his hesitant and slightly trembling hand, her gaze so soft as she watched him draw, with a silent delighted gasp she looked up at him with a warm smile before drawing the girl again. This time she had her ears rather cutely flattened to her head, her hands clasped together, a small blush on her face. Before she drew the girl, shyly taking the flowers before hugging the boy in gratitude, just before pulling away placing a brief and quick kiss on the drawing boy’s cheek. The drawing girl then regarded the guy shyly before looking down at her flowers. Enna smiled and looked up at Benjamin, slightly worried that she had offended him. She still had a soft smile playing over her lips.
