  • Anthony sat next to the small fireplace in his home. he poked at the embers with the shadows from the corner. He knew it was risky to do this, with all the police around, but his fingers had been burned too many times already, so he took the chance. His younger sister, Elizabeth, was sitting on the bed they shared, shivering. She had come down with a fever the week before, and with the only available drugs being the ones their mother was smoking, she had to suffer through it. Anthony was getting tired of this. If they didn't get medicine soon, his sister would die, and he would be left alone with his crack-head mother.
"Everything's gonna be ok, Lizzie" he assured. "I'll get you some medicine soon, and then you'll feel all better." He knew that wasn't the truth. He knew it wouldn't get any better, but he had to keep up her spirits to support the family.
His mother stumbled in, and the shadowy poker disappeared into thin air. She slumped over the bucket they used for a bathroom, and vomited until it was full. "Thanks mom," Anthony said sarcastically, knowing she couldn't hear him. "I was thinking of taking that out anyways." He looked up through the hole in their ceiling, and could see the moon bright above them. He made sure the fire was burning brightly, took out the full bathroom-bucket, and climbed into bed with his shivering sister, wrapping her in all the blankets he could find. For himself, he kept warm in a thick blanket of shadows, the heavy weight of the darkness shielding him from the cold. He closed his eyes, thinking of how much longer he could keep his family going, and how much longer he could conceal his ever-growing powers from the government.

  • Violet sat in her room, her knees pulled up to her chin. The needles she needed for her sewing and cosplaying had been taken away from her and her bookshelf had been covered in a glass-like substance and it had been locked up. The key was taken into the custody of her mother and she had thrown it into some wine bottle that her father
Her brother, Jack, never had to worry about this because he was special. He didn't have these hideous powers like she did. He would NEVER know the fear of trying not to freeze everyone he loved into a human popsicle. He could read as much as he wanted and he could take up sewing if he wanted to. Jack would never have to wear gloves to help and control the frost that flowed within his blood.
The girl exhaled and looked out the window at the streets below. All of the people walking in the neighborhood were absolutely fine. They didn't have these curses. Their parents actually loved them, she assumed. She was pretty sure her parents didn't love her.
"How did this happen?" She had heard her father say to her mother. "We have Jack and he's absolutely fine... but, I'm worried about Violet."
"How so?" Her mother whispered back.
"We don't know if she'll be taken from us and killed. Her powers.... Are rather unstable."
"She's six, darling." The rest of the conversation was blurred out by the fact that Violet wanted to curl up under her bed and never see the light of day again. It always resonated in her mind and she made sure to be kind to her parents and try to show them that she had everything under control. The mere thought of the memory had caused the teenager to curl even further into herself, and break down into an uncontrollable sob.

  • A soft knock sounded on Dimitri's door, and he leapt from his bed with a start. Realizing the ruckus he probably just made, he froze and cautiously glanced around, listening for anyone that he might have awaken. After he was sure that no family member would be checking in on him, he walked to the window and glanced outside. He saw no one at first, but slowly, a face came into view. Dimitri stepped back into a fighting stance as the face frowned at him.

"It's just me, idiot. Let me in!" Johanna balanced on the two-story high ledge beside her cousin's closed window, leaning over to look through. Dimitri quickly came to his senses and opened it so she could hop inside. He stared at her for an explanation. "I'm leaving town and I want you to come with me," she stated. He slowly nodded. "Good, now get your stuff together and I'll be waiting outside." Before Dimitri could say anything else, the cat girl had sprung out of the window and landed without even a thud. He ran to gather a bag of things. Clothes, his wallet, some snacks he kept in his nightstand. Once he was done, he tossed the bag out of the window. Johanna easily caught it from below, and Dimitri was soon plummeting down in the form of a knife. Johanna plucked him from the air, and set the bag and him down. With another shift, they were on their way.

  • It was a week later in Anthony's house. His sister never got better and had died the night before. Anthony had left his bed only yo keep the fire going, just enough to keep him warm. His mom had occasionally wandered in, and didn't seem to notice or care about the fact that her daughter was dead. And Anthony was just holding on to life by a few strings.
But today he decided he needed to change that. He needed to leave the dump he lived in, leave his mother and everything he had, little as it was. He knew he couldn't live off the streets- there were too many people watching and they might notice his powers. He decided to travel to a place he wasn't even sure existed. He was going to travel to the far lands, a place known as Eden in the stories he had heard. Not that he had heard many.
He grabbed all of his belongings, a knife, a box of matches, and a small pad of paper and a pen he had received from a kind old lady as she had walked past one day. He also grabbed the bracelet off of his sister's wrist. She was still laying in their bed, and he wanted to leave her their so she could be warm long after she had gone cold.
He wrapped all of his things in a bag of shadows, making it solid enough for it to look like a regular bag. He kissed his sister as he left, and happened to pass his mother as he walked away. She gave him a grunt of acknowledgment, as to say "be home soon." Anthony knew that wouldn't happen. He was leaving. For good.

  • Violet sighed, sitting down in the kitchen, a backpack slung over her shoulder. She couldn't take anymore of this. The girl had managed to freeze the lock off the glass cabinet that held her books and she grabbed plenty of them and she had found her needles in a bathroom cabinet in the basement. She shivered, looking at the back door. She had written her parents and brother a note, explaining the circumstances and that she would be bringing her phone with her, maybe.
The girl pushed her chair away from the table and she crossed to the door. She didn't have any training in the outside world and the only way to go was to head for the wilderness and who knew what could go on out there but, she'd finally be able to let everything go. Violet opened the door and she turned back to the household, "Bye, guys." She whispered before grasping the little butter knife she decided she'd bring with. And with that, she left the world she knew and was heading for a place where she might survive without restrictions. She regretted leaving the back door open, however.

  • "Where are we even going?" Dimitri grunted as him and Johanna stalked through the alleys between buildings, straying from the streets. Johanna glanced over at him, fingering at the backpack straps around her shoulders. "Some guys I ran into were talking about this place where they accept us. A country, they said. I'd like to get there, but it'll be hard..."

"We can do it," Dimitri stated with a nod. Johanna had stopped at the edge of the building, and she put her arm out to catch Dimitri's next step. "Over there," she whispered, and nodded toward two robots patrolling the street over. Dimitri frowned. "We look too much like runaways... They'll question us," he told her.

Johanna turned around and made her way to the metal staircase on the side of one of the brick buildings. "Then we'll go by roof," she announced quietly, and turned to Dimitri. "Be something small, like a shuriken or something." The tall, dark-haired boy obliged, and a metal star fell to the ground in his place. Johanna snatched it up and ran up the stairs with soft footsteps, and leapt from one of the levels to the roof.

  • Anthony trudged along with his pack on his back. He refused to look behind him, in case his mother was following him. He scanned the deserted streets for signs of robot cops. The last thing he needed was to be caught and killed in the middle of the street. Brick buildings were silhouetted in the distance. He knew that once he got closer, he would need to hide from the hordes of cops in the city. He thought of ways to do that. He could just hide from their vision, that would be the easy way. If he need to, he could cloak himself in shadows to escape from view. And if there was too many there, he could always shadow travel. In dire situations, he had been able to melt into the shadows and suddenly find himself at home. But using his powers like that took all of his energy away. He would always be stuck in bed for at least a day after each time, and he couldn't really control when it happened. It just did.
While contemplating his choices, Anthony's mind drifted off and he didn't realize how close to the city he had become. Before long, he was only a few minutes away, and quite close to a large group of robots guarding the edge of the buildings. He would have gone around them, but he knew there were a few things in the city that he needed to get before embarking on the rest of his journey. He walked closer, trying to be stealthy and avoid capture. He raised his head up to look on the tops of the roofs, the only empty place in the city, and saw something strange. It looked like a... cat. But it was too large to be a cat. He stared and wondered what it could be

  • Violet sighed, the more she walked, the more she felt anxious. The last thing she would need is for her anxieties to come back, bite her in the butt, and reveal herself to the entirety of the world. Her mind began to wander as she crossed out into the sidewalk, robots on every corner. If she looked like she was heading home or doing something and concealing herself, maybe they would let her get away with it. In the distance, she could see a few figures standing around and they looked rather suspicious to her.
Violet sighed once more, deciding that maybe walking past the robots on the corner would not be her finest move but, it's better than looking fishy. It's not like they could scan her and see if she had powers or not. Well, actually, she wasn't sure. Wait... Yeah she did. They couldn't but, if they found you suspicious they pricked you with a needle and took a drop of your blood. The girl walked across the street, getting closer and closer to the strangers in the darkness. That's when she felt it.
An iron clamp on her wrist. She wasn't suspicious, was she? Her heart beat raced and she turned around, finding herself face-to-face with a robot cop. "Hey! Let go!" She yelled, tugging and pulling. Her mind was swirling and she was frightened. Don't let them know....Don't let them know! she thought to herself, realizing that if she didn't calm down that she would be captured. When it came to fight or flight.... She would rather abscond than face them head on.

  • Johanna was running along the rooftop when she noticed two people below. They were approaching the street from different directions, but they both had that look that told her that they were runaways too. The boy had seen her, but she didn't think twice about it. She was running fast enough that it wouldn't matter. Her golden eyes began to glow, and she did a quick scan of him, as well as the other girl. The bright light surrounding both of their bodies proved it. Runaways. Now, originally, Johanna wanted nothing to do with them. Her and Dimitri were able to take care of themselves, and didn't need any potential problems along for the ride. But then the girl got caught, and Dimitri began rattling in her hand, and Johanna knew that if she didn't go help, Dimitri would guilt her for the rest of her life.

Johanna jumped from one roof to another, her tail raising as she caught her balance on the ledge. She crouched down, her night vision useful as she focused in on the girl and her captor. Dimitri shifted into a throwing knife in her hand, and with a smooth powerful motion, he was soon flying toward the robot's "head".

  • ( I'm going to take my chances with the first option, Lilith. This doesn't have anything to do with his character. )

Violet watched as the throwing knife vaulted over her head and jammed itself into the robot's head, breaking it and having it's grasp release her. Her eyes widened as she looked back at the people behind her, noticeably less of a group now. She began to wonder if one of them had saved her. That's when it hit her.... Maybe one of the people that rescued her had thrown the knife and saved her. If she managed to tag along, she'd thank them.
She reached over and yanked the knife from the robot's head and retreated to the safety of the shadows where the robots could not find her and laid the knife down, examining it carefully. "Well, whoever saved me.... When I meet them, I shall think to thank them." She whispered to herself, continuing to look at the weapon with interest.

  • Now on to find Dimitri... Johanna thought as she jumped roofs until she was crouching on a ledge, looking down at her cousin and the girl. At least she took him with her.

Dimitri shifted shapes, growing and becoming human as a faint glow radiated from his skin. It stopped once he had reached his final form, and he looked down at the girl he had saved. "You're welcome," he said in his low voice.

  • Violet gasped, jumping to her feet in a hurry. "Oh my gosh," She began in a quiet but hurried fashion. "Thank you so much." The girl went to throw her hands out in a hug but decided it was against her better nature and for her safety that she not do so. "Wow... You've got some power and you don't feel scared using it in front of others?" She questioned even if she felt like she was getting ahead of herself.

  • Dimitri shrugged his broad shoulders, thumbs slipping into the pockets of his jeans like the cool cat he is. "Eh, you needed help, so I helped. Our kind has to watch out for each other, don't you think?" He glanced up, knowing that Johanna was there just by logic. She probably wouldn't show herself, and he decided to not point her out right away in case he ran into trouble with this girl. "Where are you going?" he asked her, looking back down.

  • Anthony watched as the cat-girl jumped off the roof and impaled the robot. He could tell she would be help if he needed it. He also noticed the thin girl that was caught by the robot. She must have powers as well, he thought. She seems to nervous to just be on a leisurely stroll.
Anthony know he needed help. He was 13, running away from home to a place that he wasn't really sure existed. And if he was going to get help, he needed them to trust him. The cat-girl was an obvious ally, but he was sure the thing girl could be useful as well. He needed to get closer to them. There were at least 15 robots between them, one every few yards, and many on the borders of the city. He could hold shadows around him long enough to get past the first line, but he didn't know if he could hold it much longer. He could slip into an alley to rest and regain his strength, but they could be gone by the time he did. He knew exactly where the thin girl had slipped into the shadows, and could see the outline of her figure. He would have to shadow travel. It wasn't as far as he had sometimes gone, maybe it wouldn't take as much energy.
He needed to take the risk. He stared at the space where the girl was crouched, and visualized the area directly next to it, deep in the shadows. He grabbed he belongings and held them tight in his arm. He stepped froward into the darkness and faded into the shadows. When he regained his body, he was slouched on the ground of a dark alley, losing consciousness next to a girl he thought he might be able to trust. Before slipping away, he saw the silhouette of a second person, sitting next to her.

  • Violet looked up at the boy who was looking positively cool right now. "Well... I was heading out of town.... For obvious reasons but, I got caught. If you hadn't saved me who knew what they would have done to me." She answered back, trying to see calm and cool. In her sweatshirt pocket, she just barely gripped the butter knife she had brought with her. She began to nod a little bit, "Yeah... I suppose we do. I'm Violet, by the way. Violet Ludenberg."
