Valiant shut the door behind him, and then looked at his window. Did I leave that open? He went over to close it, and then felt something hard hit him in the back of his head. Letting out a sharp yelp, he jumped and his gaze fell on the object. He picked it up and recognized his girlfriend Fiona's favorite locket. But why would she pitch that in the window? That's when he saw a corner of a piece of paper protruding from the top of it. Valiant clicked it open and picked up the folded piece of paper. It read:
Dear Valiant,
Although I promised to be your wife, I must tell you that I've fallen in love with someone else and no longer wish to see you. If you truly love me, it would be best for you to leave this town and allow me to live my life in peace.
~ Fiona
His eyes widening and heart beating rapidly, Valiant turned the note over for any proof that this was a joke. There was none. He looked at the front, then the back, over and over, but finding nothing. He gave up ad felt his spirits sink and tears flow down his face. He read the last sentence again. "If you truly love me, it would be best for you to leave this town and allow me to live my life in peace."
Upset and pained but determined, he folded the note carefully and put it and the necklace into his pocket. "Fine," he whispered. "If that's what you want, I'll leave." He paused. "And I'm never coming back, however much I want to." Silently he added, but I still love you, no matter what.
Valiant let himself cry for a minute, then took off to the harbor. A ship was scheduled to leave that evening, and he wouldn't miss it for the world.
