[color=black]OOC- So, I'm preparing for my JLPT N5 in December, and I was wondering what the difference between 'boku' and 'watashi' is. My textbook says 'boku' is for males (although I probably read 'onna' as 'otoko' for some unknown reason XD), but I've only ever heard it being used by females.

  • [fancypost borderwidth=0px; text-align: justify; width: 400pt; font-size: 9pt;]I believe that girls customarily use "watashi" unless they want to sound really feminine (atashi) or are tomboys (boku). Some girls use boku to express herself. / learned from anime 8D

[color=black]OOC- Haha, anime is always a great source of Japanese :D
From doing some further research, I have found out that boku is only used by young boys or men when with their closest friends. Watashi is used by both men and women, but ore is more common with men.
I'd heard boku being used by females in Japanese music. I suppose it's because boku fits the rythm of the song more than watashi. For example, in Kyary Pamyu Pamyu's song, Invader Invader, she sings 'Boku wa inbeda' probably because 'Watashi wa inbeda' wouldn't fit.[color=black]
